I think big Bruce is the way to go up front. Maybe keep the Mexican one for backup and possibly have a couple smaller Danforth anchors available as well.
You need to fix a “anchor plate” on the outside of the boat because the way you have your anchor setting it will destroy the bow of your boat in rough seas. Absolutely love your videos.
Please put water lift muffler back to structural strength, it is a low pressure vessel. Exhaust pressure at inlet pushes water and exhaust out, if it breaks you will unknowingly sink boat.
I would highly recommend the Bruce with a break away set up. It will save the anchor by breaking away and coming out backwards. Simple to set up with a D-ring shackle to connect the chain to the bottom of the anchor then wrapping stainless steel lock wire to the end of the anchor to hold it firmly with some play in the anchor chain. Now if your anchor gets stuck you can back down on it opposite of the direction and break the wire free causing the anchor to flip over. You can search break away ancho set up. Hope this helps. 👌
Any anchor is better than none. having extra anchors is a real godsend when in trouble. Keep them all you can always donate one to another cruiser when they loose theirs. Don't forget to put a snubber on it while it is on deck to take pressure off of the windlass. Good progress again. atb regards from the UK
@@sjsobol1 They just need to be stowed so they can be accessed quickly. I had two anchors. A 15 lbs high tensile Deck anchor with 50 feet of chain plus rode and a 35 lbs storm anchor with 50 feet of 3/8's chain plus 5/8 rode. Second anchor was stored in locker because it wasn't need that often but was ready if needed.
I’ve seen a lot of electrical work on solar and batteries. When they had power problems because of a bad breaker they all had the same exact shape and color breaker sold under various brands. I noticed from a previous video that the windless directional control in the clear cover box has that same problematic breaker. I highly recommend that you replace it with a Blue Sea or a Buss brand breaker before it fails under load leaving you with big problem.
Get a Rocna for your size boat and keep the Bruce as a spare. Ditch the other 2. Lot of weight and of no use to what you want to do. Yaba is going to be a beauty 🍻
Ben, you need to set up a 'chain claw' to take the weight of the anchor off the winch. The Bowsprit all shiny and white will be the finishing touch to YABA's exterior.
Regarding anchors, the only one that is a potential keeper is the Bruce. Don’t forget that you need a lot more anchor line. The minima is 7 to 10 times the water depth. So 10 meters of water depth needs at least 70 meters of line. On Yaba that could be a combination of chain and rope, with the chain attached directly to the anchor. Please research this fully and carefully.
I'd keep the heaviest 2 anchors , but a spare anchor is always nice to have. Utilize what you have and test it all out . then adjust accordingly. don't spend the cheese $$ if you don't have to. I am so looking forward to you sailing in that beautiful sail boat. you 2 rock" : )
Thanks! The one you have that is probably the one you’d use the most that first one you called the Fishermans hook, it’s good for rocky bottoms as they can slide down and find a crevice or outcropping of rock to hook onto when there’s no sand to bury the anchor in. That second one might work a bit like the first one. Of course, when you look at the anchors you have and they are all older, I’m surprised you didn’t go really old school, a round flat stone wheel with a hole in the center that you just throw over the side and let hit the bottom. The Romans or the Greeks would know what I was talking about. Don’t believe me ask Alexander the Great or Cesar. 😂
The last one could do with modifying with a rollover hop so it's more inline with modern tech anchors. Also the anchor was probably originally sized for the vessel to be in port in really strong storm force winds, Rocna, Mantis and others have anchor sizing on their website. A really good well sized anchor(+backup) and a storm drogue are arguably some of the most important bits of kit on your boat you'll ever invest in.
My two cents, buy a good quality anchor and oversize it. You see so many sailing channels dealing with the stress and anxiety of dragging anchor and not digging in. Best of luck guys, keep up the great content 😊
You’d be wise to invest in a modern Rocna or a Mantus anchor. Also, as others have mentioned… do put an anchor plate on your bow. Great daily updates. Thanks. 🇨🇦
I'd have to say the Bruce is the most practical and work well for you , I'd keep that stainless steel yachtsman anchor just to hang it on the bow a real character piece . Ahoy
You can NEVER have too many anchors. Each has a purpose for different types of bottoms. The first one you showed the "Fishermans" anchor and is great for rocky bottoms. Bruce is a good general anchor and holds well. I am not familiar with the Mexican anchor. You never know when you will need to find a Hurricane Hole and secure yourself in. Back in the 70's I was reading an book, (Pardees??? sp) where they had to ride out a hurricane and had 14!!! anchors of all sizes (even the dingy anchor) set out all around the boat. You many never use it but when you need it you'll have it. Think this one over really well.
Your anchor is vital dont compromise! Bruce is not the best I would strongly suggest getting the newer generation ones I had a spade on my Rassy 49 and Rocna 33 on my Oceanlord, big difference to prevous plough types I had. My base line was get as big as you possibly can with as much chain 100 metres was minimum. I was doing skipper charter off west coast of Scotland. For stern anchor you cant beat the fortress kedge it is light yet has huge holding and can be taken apart to stow if needed. Point you dont really want to wait to find out you got the wrong anchor! Mind having a engine that starts quickly is the other vital anchor.
Hello Ben and MP! The work you are doing to get launched is amazing. Thank you for the great content. May I suggest on your anchor side of the bow, put up some plating as to protect your bow from the anchor. Your anchor will quickly chew up the paint and wood on the bow.
I have enjoyed your channel since the beginning. I look forward to the launch of Yaba. I would love to see all the tradesmen that have worked on the boat be involved in the launch ceremony
The hook anchor (kedge) is excellent if anchoring in rock, coral, or weed bottom conditions. All anchors need a LOT of chain, it is the weight of the chain on the bottom that keeps the anchor in place. The Bruce is a good anchor for sand and mud.
You might make a cathead set up to keep the anchors controlled. I like the north hill design. You will definitely need a hook and spring line so you dont rip the windlass out
Ben, Ben, Ben, Son, set up a new tent/shade cloth station so you can protect MP, Nico, Lo’ic and others while you are working. UV rays are dangerous. If you know, you know. Love the videos.❤️❤️❤️😎

You might consider a Pool type balanced anchor. The flukes are weighted such that they remain vertical when the anchor is raised. It's intended to make stowing against the hull simpler. I believe the minimum size is 50Kg.
Looking at the length of the bowsprit, the stainless fittings and the cross section it appears to have had whisker stays port and starboard to take some of the lateral loads. This is in addition to the bobstay.
another milestone set and ready for launch - i thought you might leave the Sprit until in the water, when tied up you might have the right working height, but i guess its more an advantage working where you are with power available and not dropping tools in the great pond
As I started to watch today's episode i went ahead into the future a little, using my imagination to see Yaba out on the open oceon completed, full sails, gleaming and looking beautiful, crashing through sapphire blue waves creating spray, while dolphins swim just off the bow. I can see her now....
In manual up mode, the anchor chain rides high above the bolted plate from the chain rollers. Next need to determine what secures the anchor in place, chain tension or auxiliary stop. Bow sprit work has begun.
Hi Ben and MP. I love watching Yaba come together. My father was a boatwright for a time he did all the wood work on a double masted schooner back in the late 70's. He was amazing at refinishing wood, he could make it look like glass. I grew up around boats. I used to have a small sailing skiff I would sail on the Columbia River. I read a book in the fourth grade called ( Dove ) I was hooked.
You got a Good team Ben especially Nico who has been there with you from the start, and all the other skilled carpenters the brought your sinking boat and restored Yaba to it’s current state, ready soon for water. Well done Ben and MP plus her dad!
Keep the old anchor.... As it is very good if the bottom is a little more stony or rocky! I will follow every single one of your episodes, with excitement and curiosity! Good luck with everything. 😃

Kedghe anchors will store flat. You should keep it near the stern with a flat nylon strap (which can be rolled up similar to a fire hose) as an emergency aft anchor. The strap length should be a least as long as your forward anchor chain.
I would say, forget the "fisherman" anchor or the Mexican anchor. My experience with a Bruce ancor is mixed. On weed it doesn't grip well and on hard ground it has problems to dig itself in well. Best in my experience was a FOB anchor similar to a Danforth anchor, excellent grip on all grounds but not ideal when it comes to carry it around on the bow. I would go for a modern bracket anchor like ROCNA or Delta. They have a very good holding strength, dig in easily and carry well on the bow.
The chain is part of anchoring. The is a relation between the boat displacement, weight of the chain, weight of the anchor and the depth of the sea flor, VERY IMPORTANT if you want to sleep.
That kedge anchor would be useful if you ever plan to be anchoring over rocks or coral. On a boat this big, I would want to have a means of deploying a stern anchor quickly. Have you considered how you would haul in a stern anchor.
I think you made a wise decision on the anchor choice for now, But you know when its bad and you dont have a good one, your hit, It can be good and all and having a bad anchor can make it go bad quick. Anchoring in a cove for storm protection etc. I would upgrade later and figure out whats best for that boat, weight and windless,. You guys are Awesome, much love..
Bruce is a great anchor...and take the Mexican for stern anchor and keep it at the stern. Bruce held in a cyclone on my boat. Its the weight of chain that provides the holding power. You need a metal shield fastened to protect boat from anchor. They're normal in Canada.
Hey, folks, should you consider a venting system for the bilge/machine house? In case of smoke of any kind down there it would be hard to deal with the eventual cause in a foggy environment, I think. Good luck you two, eager for the splashing day!
Great work. I would keep the three ancors, because you couod lose one and still be ok, or some one else could need one and you have some thing to trade. Guys make sure you put carbon monoxide detectors around the boat. Not only for your motor. Great Video.
Ben, remember one thing. Your anchor is the chain. The hook is just to prevent your anchor from slipping. I will say for a boat the size of Jaba, your chain is too thin.
Hola amigos, Another productive day Anchor choice. I strongly suggest you check out the UA-cam channels that do reviews on anchors. It's best feature is the roll over bar that facilitates a quick reset when you swing.
primary anchor the Bruce up front (50kg heavy enough I think) how about a 'Danforth' for the kedge off the back, Danforths are quite flat when stowed, arrange some blocking to keep it parked nicely. agree on the Mexican.
I'd use the Bruce as the primary anchor and the Mexican as the backup for the time being and look for a deal on a Vulcan, Spade, or Mantis M2 as the future primary anchor (16:40).
Hello Guys. You are doing a fantastic jobb with your boat. But please don´t paint the bowsprit white. If you can't sand it wood clean, and varnish...... Do paint it in a mahogany´ish color. So it will be like an extension of the railing. Also becomes a unit with the masts. Unless you intend to paint them white too...? Best regards from Stockholm. Sweden. 👍🌈🌹
I was looking at the anchor retracting into the boat and noticed you probably need a stainless protective plate so in rough or crazy conditions the anchor does not gouge the side of the boat.
Loving all the electrical work Mp. Not sure how to spell your name. I too have been pushing my electrical skills and adding new electrical outlets and new ceiling lights for my kitchen rebuild project. Your Dad looks like he has been a great teacher. I too am lucky as i have a friend who taught electrical engineering. Your work so far is so impressive. Looking forward to see everything finally come together and splash to the water. Still been watching every episode since you bought the boat. And really enjoying having daily episodes now.
You are guys lucky!!!! You have got different Ankers for different bottom. Rock bottom is where you can hook and loose your anker. It's cheapest anker. Bruce anker is for sandy bottom. When your boat is dragged by gale it would digg deeper and deeper in a sand. Anker with welded ends is for coral bottom. Remember!!!! Never anker deeper than 10 m deep. You would loose your any anker. Always every time check your anker fixing mechanism. Every time you throwing it out of bort!
Kedging is using a line attached to a kedge anchor, sea anchor or large tree or post to move a boat either against the wind or in dead calm. IE They kedged the dinghy into port
Hi guys! DAY 21 in a row towards launch, how exciting? Let us know your thoughts about ANCHORS! ⚓
Go go go!!!!❤❤❤
Anchors are very controversial, sure you’ll get a few strong opinions. and surprise” ?? The chain misses those bolts nicely.
I think big Bruce is the way to go up front. Maybe keep the Mexican one for backup and possibly have a couple smaller Danforth anchors available as well.
Drill wholes and put a pin through anchor support and anchor. You want to be 100% sure the anchor is secured during voyages.
21 dias Marujos!! que travessia intensa!!
You need to fix a “anchor plate” on the outside of the boat because the way you have your anchor setting it will destroy the bow of your boat in rough seas. Absolutely love your videos.
It goes all the way up in the support noting wil bang or something it wil be on deck totaly
@@joeykuiperij4806 Ok, but in heavy seas it will be swinging around before it gets to the bow roller...
An anchor ⚓ plate is a must. The anchor locker should also be liined with steel plates or hardened epoxy
anchor plate is a must
Boy! Does that anchor look like a lethal weapon against the bow while raising it up in choppy waters
Please put water lift muffler back to structural strength, it is a low pressure vessel. Exhaust pressure at inlet pushes water and exhaust out, if it breaks you will unknowingly sink boat.
Nico has given you enormous hours of laborious work. I applaud his dedication to your project.
I too thought of posting about Nico. Nico deserves to go on a few trips in the future. Hardest working guy on the yard by far. Hat off to you Nico.
yes but is he getting paid?
Mate you need an anchor plate it’s that simple as a captain of your boat you should no safety first love your channel
You may need a steel plate near the anchor to protect the hull from the anchor, but it looks great. Take care and have a wonderful day
At the end of the chain connected to the anchor you have to put a swifel so the ancher can turn before you have it home.
So it will be like an extension of the railing.
Also becomes a unit with the masts. Unless you intend to paint them white too...? Best regards from Stockholm. Sweden. 👍🌈🌹
Keep the bruce and the mexicana for sure, both work really nice and youll have a nice combination for any kind off sea floor.
I think you need to take Nico with you. He's almost family!
I was looking at the anchor retracting into the boat and noticed you probably need a stainless protective plate so in rough or crazy conditions the anchor does not gouge the side of the boat.
Bom dia MP, Ben, Loick e todos os marujos.😊😊😊
Loving all the electrical work Mp. Not sure how to spell your name. I too have been pushing my electrical skills and adding new electrical outlets and new ceiling lights for my kitchen rebuild project. Your Dad looks like he has been a great teacher. I too am lucky as i have a friend who taught electrical engineering. Your work so far is so impressive. Looking forward to see everything finally come together and splash to the water. Still been watching every episode since you bought the boat. And really enjoying having daily episodes now.
All types of anchors have there own use. You need them
Hey hey let’s go. Yaba get’s the last preparation before launch..Ben and MP get it done..great!
Rocna anchors are the best!
Bom dia MP @ Ben sinto que mais uma semana e o Yabá irá para água sucesso a Vcs tenham uma ótima semana
Bien chicos sigan adelante
Kedging is using a line attached to a kedge anchor, sea anchor or large tree or post to move a boat either against the wind or in dead calm. IE They kedged the dinghy into port
