I'm so glad you guys had the epiphany to put up a piece of trim behind the track to solve this problem. I was literally yelling at my screen as Jim was setting up the router and as much because of being able to attach to several studs as to clear the door trim. LOL. I guess great minds think alike.
I was going to have heart failure too! If he would have routed the trim I might have lost my mind!😂

Love your build and all of the fun you have in making your build a real home. Quick kitchen tip: to keep the cutting board from moving around while cutting put a damp paper towel or rag under the board. It makes things so much easier. I look forward to continuing to watch your channel. Stay safe.

thanks for the newest additions JUNO AND LUNA they are so sweet im a full goober in that they are my little girls, im the recluse who got the cherleader in the best world, and god keeps us with his blessing, , she still gets carded for wine in our cooking as she dont age, our cabin took a turn as we are going to build a new home and keep the cabin as a clubhouse type deal, and our new babies need a place to live on their own, imagine a 54 year old with 2 brand new babies im in a different world of love, we thought we was done havin kids but god had a different plan we love these little gifts, our homecoming is perfect, we will show yall pics of what we are planning soon

Mmmm homemade sausage is sooooo good!!! We get pork and beef to get done up and we raise our own butchering chickens!!! We also grow a garden and can and freeze!!!

Yes, I always use a 1x4 screwed to the studs with countersink screws and that places enough room between the door and the trim. Looks great

Can I suggest next time, Take the metal rail down, on each of your metal tubes put big black washers on, which will give you the clearance you need and Bingo You've solved your problem , You know Jim those Hootis type big black washers. Definitely love the food part of the video 😊❤ The eggs are massive, no wonder we hear them crow in the background 😅 I don’t really trust those type of anchor bolts. There are better ones that clamp the plasterboard. Takes more weight 😊 Good different take on door’s throughout the house. Looks good. Until the next video ❤

As I started watching, I thought about my first barn door install - I did not expect the door to scrape my trim. I ended up mounting a 1x behind the rail to make it stand off from the wall. Now, I'll resume watching and see what y'all did! :)

You could have set the door on a 3/4 in board or 2 pieces of cardboard to get the height

If you want to make the fixings secure in the sheet rock (plaster board here in the UK) is after drilling the holes pump a little spray foam into the holes before fitting the anchor plugs then push the plugs in before it sets and fix everything then when it sets inside the wall space it's held in solid wall filling
I’m sure somebody’s already told y’all this, but I didn’t see it close in the comments. Why not just take about three washers per stand off and put it behind the rail and then screw right back into it and that’ll set it off enough to account for the trim around the door?
We had discussed that as well, but we thought it would’ve still hit since the washers were pretty thin.

YAH! I was debating on whether to write something when the bolts did not line up on studs. The board would catch as many studs as you want. Then the door did not slide and you thought to add the board. Great minds. I stop the video to write so I do not know what happens...its a mystery right now....it worked out great! You are a great couple and awesome parents.
Love the look of the door. Never fails that adjustments are needed for a quick install project.

Putting the board behind it is what I have done for my three sliding barn doors. Then you lag bolt the rail to the board.

The thought had occurred, how to turn on/off light switch when door open. Not a biggie and a light switch can be moved fairly easily. Nice job on door installation and breakfast sausage and scrambled eggs.

I think there's a way you could probably make a spacer, for behind the rail.

Just an idea, watch Wild Wonderful Off Grid and they build there barn doors out of wood and stained them the color they wanted. They did have to buy the brackets to hang the doors. Good luck

What about securing the bottom of the door so the kid can’t tilt the door off the track? There has to be a fastener at the bottom as well.
I think the railing for the bottom is separate. I need to look into it!

Nice work! Turned out well. I have to big boy proof everything I build. If it don’t hold me hanging or jumping on it it’s junk or has to go or have reinforcement. Those inserts in to sheet rock are for light weight stuff. Hope you hit a couple studs in there somewhere. If so you probably be ok if not don’t get too rough with that door. 🤕

When hanging a barn door with door trim already installed always use a 1 X 4 or5 as abase on the wall. So Glad y’all figured it out.
