    To those who think ADHD is not real.
    Those with ADHD do not care how they are treated, they just want to be treated. It is not normal to forget what is being talked to you about within 5 seconds after it was mentioned. It is not normal to have to yell at yourself to do a simple task, but can not move to do it. You want to call that lazy? Alright imagine every single time you do something but you have no excitement in doing your brain feels like a vice is crushing it. Imagine Imagine writing yourself multiple notes to remembers your moms birthday, only to have her heart broken because you still forgot. Imagine feeling shame, doubt, guilt, self hate because you try so hard to actually be productive... and you simply can't.
    People want to call this "This is just how they are," Well guess what? Get it out of your mind that you think these are actual choices. Get it out of your mind that you think you know what ADHD is because you obviously dont. It can be a true nightmare for many many people. This isn't fun. This is a lack of control of how we operate and JUST TRYING HARDER isn't how you fix it. I wish it was. I tried that.

      Hey, that's the story of my life... Do you have any advice, exercises or something, anything?

    • @MnJiman
      @MnJiman 9 років тому +33

      scully First, learn to meditate. Start with connecting it with a habit you do every morning, then move on from there to use it through the day in response to focus changes. This meditation is easy and simple. You just have to do slow controlled breaths. Focus on your breaths, that each breath is your focus that you want to do at that moment.
      Next, stop trying to out right motivate yourself. Stop attempting to push yourself to do something because that is not going to work. You must gain will power and learn to have discipline. Trying to out right yell at yourself will only cause headache, however if you take the time to gain will power, the power to say no to when you do something impulsive, the power to stay on task... you will start to gain the discipline to stay on task when you are on task.
      You mush be aware and conscious of when you are on focus and when you start losing it. Once you start losing that focus, react to it with meditation.
      You must also seek a professional if you can, the treatment they will provide will assist you. It will not cure you. You must work on yourself on a daily basis. However, for most people its near impossible to fix themselves without treatment as an aid.

      Thank you so much for this, I really appreciate it. I've always heard people say "meditate" but never really understood how that could be used directly like that. (Even I was suggesting it and tried mindfulness myself but thought it's only good for calming your mind in general)
      I rarely do something out right unproductive, I usually subtly fool myself by over researching something instead of starting to do the actual work, so it's hard to notice it while I do that, but I'll try my best to be more mindful.. I'm also planning to visit a doctor and get serious help in two weeks.
      I was speaking with a friend yesterday who tried meds and all sorts of things, but at the end changed her bad habits just by self discipline, lots of exercise and better planning. It's amazing to see someone accomplish that on her own and i'm really inspired so if anyone else is reading this, so can you!
      Thanks again for helping a stranger! I'll begin right now.

    • @MnJiman
      @MnJiman 9 років тому +9

      scully I agree with LordWellington35 a bit. Every person do have different degrees of ADHD and for each person they deal with it differently. Its possible your friend didn't have a bad case of ADHD... but its also possible they simply lived with a poor life style. Someone with even a moderate case of ADHD may find themselves having a hard time even if they did end up having a really healthy life style. It is all about learning what actually works for you. Just because someone solve their issues one way does not mean it will work for you, however it is good to find inspiration in the fact that you can improve upon yourself if you try.
      You will need to not depend on medication 100%, you must rely on your self as well.

      I thought I was lazy and didn't see a point to doing things but then when I actually wanted to try to do them I still couldn't do them. It was soul crushing for a while knowing I was smart and I could never achieve my goals. I have a hard time reading books on my own but in a class setting it was a bit easier since everyone was doing it and the teachers were engaging me often. The constant reminder and pressure from teachers were the only things that lead me finish high school and allowed me to experience a bit of college. I work with my step dad repairing houses (paint, tile, sheetrock, texture, carpentry, plumbing, and electricity). I am good at learning things but when it comes the time to actually finish the tasks I find myself being distracted easily and often forget what I was doing before the start of a conversation.

      Same here. I was getting along, but years behind my peers and friends. Once I started seeing what I had in common with others that have ADHD, I realized I was doing a ton of things I thought were just my own failures, but really were just workarounds and coping mechanisms for a legitimate issue.

    People conflate ADD with laziness when it's reallysimple:
    Laziness: I don't feel like doing this thing so I wont
    ADD: I may desperately want to do this thing and I try my best to, but I'm unable to/it's way harder than it should be (depends on the thing)

      ...I’m depressed, anxious and have ADHD, meaning I get anxious when a deadline comes up, but my depression knocks me down every times I try and get out of bed and once I finally sit down to do the work, I don’t understand any of it and get really upset over not being able to focus on the work, so I go take a depression nap and oops I missed the assignment and I’m getting yelled at by my parents...making the whole situation worse as my parents voice is what my depression is. Talking down to me and making fun of how I do things, as a nerodivergent person it hurts going through this and I’ve only realized recently that not everyone experienced this...or still experiencing it in my case...

    Diagnosed late in life (46yrs), and spending the last year recalling memories of things I said, did or didn't do, I can attest to the executive functions being the primary factor. Learning more about the brain and executive functions has done wonders in helping me understand the 'why' in ADHD, and I can now begin to practice and learn how to counteract the daily impulses. Anger and Depression about 'not knowing' for so many years is still a struggle.

    1. To do lists and organization system

    3. Plan to work during your high energy window
    4. Positivity - shut down any negative self talk
    5. Positive affirmations and self pep talk
    6. Remember why youre doing whatever it is; revisit your goals annd dreams list regularly
    7. Youre not alone. It is going to be ok.
    I have adhd, ocd rumination, ptsd and a couple other things. Experience self love and love for others. Life is short and its easy to get depressed and stay there.

    Wow. The conversation below after this 3 min video is mind blowing. People spouting out disdain for ADHD and related issues , yet their comments show a fundamental lack of understanding of science or the mind. Psychology is an imperfect field, agreed, but for goodness sake, have some humility and gather some information before you trash other people's life work and other peoples suffering. The world might be a better place. ....and Thanks Dr. Barkley for your brilliant work...perfect, imperfect, or otherwise.

    • @taramccourt1312
      @taramccourt1312 3 роки тому +3

      Although I appreciate and respect your perspective, my thoughts on the comments differ. I see a lot of people who are frustrated by their neurological differences, because the world is more challenging to manage. Society isn't really modeled for people with ADHD, Autism, etc. There are a lot of negative effects like trauma, depression, and anxiety, that we suffer from because we often struggle to conform and grow in a world predominantly shaped by neurotypical people. I try to understand other people's perspectives, though, and I can appreciate how hard it is to see the comments as something other than disrespectful.

      There’s an actual neurological condition for that, called Aphantasia. Most people are able to view an image in their head, mentally and that changes their behaviour. But that doesn’t happen for aphantastics . Even the internal monologue you mentioned, some don’t have it. That’s aural aphantasia.

    Yeah, so interesting when he's talking about hindsight, foresight and a subjective sense of time. People with ADD suffer from an inability to have a sense of linear time (chronos) it's about opportunity time (kairos) so we live in an eternal NOW when everything has to be done NOW!!. Which would be fine except that it's stuff like I must weed the garden now, or wash my clothes now instead of completing that pesky report for the presentation next week.

    I have inattentive type, although the one thing I actually found wasn't impaired about these 5 things personally is the second one - visual imagery. I'm actually probably above average in that specific part, but I wonder whether that's because of developing it more growing up by some means. I certainly suffer from a deficit in other areas. Controlling my emotions though is one that I've consciously trained as an adult, with quite a lot of success.

    I know exactly what you're talking about. Have you looked into getting an ADHD medication? I suffer from ED. I've gone off all my anti depressants. I've been incorrectly diagnosed for 29 years. The reason I'm depressed, anxious is because I cannot talk to people, because of my ADHD. I can never hear lyrics in songs, I can never watch a TV show without subtitles. I see my psych next week, and my wife will be there with me. She has been aiding me with 45-60mg methylphenidate/day. My memory recall is and always has been awful. I've been scared to talk to friends for years, because I felt less than. I also have no motivation to do anything. I finally got out of bed for the first time in 2 years, and started excercising while on methylpenidate. For the past 2 years, I've hyperfocused on binge watching TV shows, because my brain cannnot contemplate doing anything else. Has no energy. Also, Ive never been able to read a fiction book.

      Have you had your vitamin d levels checked? Vitamin D deficiency makes conditions like depression, anxiety, and mood disorders worse. Low iron can make you really tired. Low dopamine can cause the underlying symptoms of major depressive disorder. There's no test for dopamine levels, but you can test zinc and magnesium levels which are used to transport dopamine and the production of it. Vitamin D and iron levels can be tested. You have to ask specifically for them, as they are not routinely tested. The finger prick in the doctor's office missed my daughter's low iron levels. Don't let them use that. Start looking up all the vitamin and nutrient deficiencies that coincide with ADHD.

I just can't see an end to these struggles. Our son rules our lives with his foul dysfunctional moods and we live in fear, treading on eggshells. Recently he injured me during a struggle. That sounds really hard and i am really sorry. Although, this sounds a little different from "normal" executive dysfunction. Perhaps it might be time for your son to move from his parents house and start his life as an adult. Wether it be in an assisted housing or on his own (if he can). You should not have to endure violence and bad behaviour just because he is your child and has a neuro-develepomental disorder. My relentless pursuit of knowledge here, I suspect, is desperation to find the answer to what plagues me. After years of study (and professional treatment), I have recently come to feel a confidence that executive dysfunction is the root of my (thusfar) immutable problems regarding an incongruence between my internal motivations & intents vs initiation & execution of them.

They will give you a diagnosis, along with be able to tell you if you have learning disabilities AND what your learning style is (auditory, visual, etc). This information can truly help you in life. Don't think of the diagnosis as a "label" but a shield in life. You will now be covered by laws in both educational settings and in employment.

    In fifth grade I had an elderly teacher who was an elitist and could be very negative to kids that she didn’t feel like l were meeting her standards. I had ADHD and she would say that I would make “careless mistakes“ and she would say it in such a dismissive way. And by that time I was already diagnosed with ADHD. It didn’t matter to her she just dismissed it in such a disgusting old-fashioned way. As if I wasn’t trying hard enough. Even though I’ve come so far things like that still emotionally affect me.

    That may very well be true. My guess is that changing any aspect of your lifestyle for the better will help you in some way. Whether these methods really address the core problem is another matter. Simply trying to address the problem also might have an effect. I used "apparently" in my comment because I really haven't read much that demonstrated their effectiveness. That doesn't stop people from swearing by them though.

    Hi, just st wanted to add to group and for anyone seeking knowledge. Dr. Barkley is my guru
    He gets it.
    My Moms brother was on a leash and collar until 5. My Dad kept wandering around small town in Montana instead of going to school when young.
    They both became successful in own your own business type of work. My uncle a farm and my Dad a trucking biz.
    This disorder does not mean no talent, no intelligence and no ability and no ability to learn
    It does mean challenges and obstacles that must be addressed.
    You can achieve. You are here for a reason and purpose. Think about things that cause you to hyper- focus and build on that. I do believe in hyper- focus.
    Good luck to all.

    Growing up I was thought to be ADHD and later bipolar (manic/depressive). Hyperactivity (or mania) I've learned recently is one of the signs for phenylketonuria, which up until recently if I understand it right was not widely tested for. There could be many with PKU who are being treated for it with other things.

    • @PrincessGold1
      @PrincessGold1 2 роки тому

      PKU testing in my country is done with a tiny bloodtest done on the heel after birth. A vitamin K injection is done. PKU is a serious disease. that starts manifesting under 1 year with developmental delays and physical delays in growth. ADHD/ADD are not related to PKU.

I zone hard when there's conflict around me I.e arguing, fighting, yelling, crying etc. My body and mind just kinda react to what it needs to in order to stay safe...im going to stop there because this could go on for a while 😂 if you got this far you should like this so I know. My heart and my soul and energy are very vulnerable, which means I can be easily swayed, I trust too easily, I confide too much, im plyable....you get the point..so in turn that means I have a lot of emotional trauma and some real physical trauma because I trust someone with my heart to cherish it. unfortunately, some people didn't....a lot. So I zone so far out that I appear heartless and uncaring. Im not. I just don't deal with that kind of pain well....so i turn off. So...anyone else do thid?

According to the study, some of the subjects had been medicated and other not, but the correlation remained.

    Thom Hartmann's Hunters and Farmers Theory very helpful. We are 'Hunters' not 'Farmers'. We're 'Hunters' trying to live in a world that is designed and works for 'Farmers'. Working and living in your areas of competence instead of spending so much time trying to do areas of poor competence gives a more productive, and less stressful life. We have large areas of high competence, large areas of low competence, little in the middle. The opposite is true for nonADHD. They have small areas of low competence and high competence, and large area of competence. ADHD has the inverted Bell curve of competence. Get others to do or pay others to do those things you're poor at.

    They can pay to have the prefrontal cortex measured, dopamine levels checked, and if they are willing to risk radiation, SPECT scan tests to look for areas of inactivity where there should be activity. This is beyond the DSM, which takes into account that patients are not all wealthy enough to go through such a barrage of tests. You can see ADHD in such methods. You can SEE a brain scan and say "that person is 90% likely to have attention deficits." The DSM is just as effective, but far cheaper.

    Test your own theory. Talk to some adults with ADHD. Ask them how they were faring before and after treatment. One thing, I bet you don't find many who go off their medications, except if they can't afford them.

Further, the previous DSM chair you're referring to is Allen Frances. He didn't say it's bullshit.
