We are all so proud of you. I will always remember that moment where you came out of the water and Alice and I were emotional wrecks. You inspire our family every day. ❤
I met you just after the finish line at Cardiff Half, I hit my PB, you did not, but we had a brief chat and you were really happy for me, and smiling and full of positivity (made my day) - what you displayed to a total stranger is what being a true "athlete" is all about,. Never mind UA-cam, social media or it's trolls. Keep on trying, and keep on being real, simply inspiring
Hey Kelly, I did Swansea this year, too and it seems we were in the water at the same time. I swim like wounded whale and not surprisingly my time was very bad. Post race I decided to take at least half a year off typical triathlon training and dedicate it to swimming. I'm even hiring swim coach. So, I understand the struggle and admire that you still put yourself in this position, challenge and test yourself. And on top of that you share bad moments. That's special - I'm not sure if I'm big enough to do it. Remember that there are much more people who support your efforts, we're just quiet. The noisy types, typing nasty comments from mum's basement, they've never achieve what you have. Don't waste energy for them. All the best to you and your lovely family. Keep fighting!
Kelly! I feel you, and I feel for you. As someone who also came to longer distance tri from a running background, learned to ride, then swim, swimming is always my slower of the three. But while disappointed for you, I feel excited for you. I fully understand the "draw the line in the sand" as you have done, I think of things in terms of tennis: back to the baseline, serve the new point (same concept I'm sure).I'd reframe it that this was not your first, because you weren't given a chance for that to happen, but a practice start/experience on the difficult portion, race prep, and prerace jitters. Your next one will actually be your first, an amazing time, feeling confident and fun on your ride and run, and the finish line experience. Random internet stranger thoughts from across the Atlantic but 🙌you did the thing, you made the swim cut off. You've got this. (and I love that the winner checked in on you, community is the best).
On the plus side Kell, it’s made one of your best videos. But Ironman has shown its true colours, just like UTMB, the uncaring all devouring multi event conglomerate it is. I’m so glad the US events are fighting back and resisting. Unfortunately triathlons are difficult to organise, expensive to run and easier for regular organisers to, well, actually organise and they will find it easier to steamroller small events. I can’t believe they only offered you another event, I imagine they were in breach of contract so that is actually your consumer right, they should offer more in compensation for the effort, time, training and commitment you have given and will have to give again if you do another event. I have known what Ironman are like for decades now and being absolutely honest it’s put me off triathlons knowing that there is hardly any other alternative for the big events but them as organisers. On, on Kell.
Kudos for taking on and tackling the challenge!!! Being diabetic and one that has uncertainty about making the swim cutoff, to me, you've already won getting to the start line ready to go and that day is a celebration of all of the hard work to get there (not to mention it looks like you have an amazing support crew)! I get it's tough thing to swallow, I've completed three 70.3s (2/3s of another before storm cancellation), and not long ago went for another and that day was not at all my day (winds were 20+ mph gust, whitecaps out on the lake, swim shortened to 500m) and it was over (not very far in the swim) soon after it started. But to me, it probably was the best thing to happen after finding out the Mon before of a medical situation that needed to be addressed. Fingers crossed after that is taken care of with gradually start back into the swing of things, if for nothing else just for the physical/mental fitness.
We are all proud! I'm really glad they responded and apologized. You showed such grace and positive forward looking attitude. Ignore the negativity! Looking forward to your journey from here.
So sorry to hear that they didn't let you continue despite being within the cut-off. Wishing you the best for your training, I know you'll smash it next time! 💪
People often forget that for most participants, triathlon is a race against themselves. You toed the start line and gave it your best. You learned from it. Tune out the haters and do another race. Good luck and keep setting a keep example for your family
Sports events can be such a joyous time but at times very unfair. As you said, draw a line in the sand. We know that you got a raw deal. Yet we also know and believe you can compete at this level 💯😎 Respect to your family
Really enjoyed your video and so gutted for you. Swimming is hard and you should be proud of yourself for battling through it and making that cutoff 👏 keep training and I'm sure you will smash the next one you enter 😊🏊🚴🏃
Kelly you are inspirational! I am an appalling swimmer and can fully appreciate how brave you were to even attempt a triathlon. I’m so sorry you received hate from some people. Keep doing what you do-you’re awesome!
Hey Kelly - I can't understand why some people have to be so cruel online - it's very sad. So sorry that IM messed up your race. Do the Cotswold 113 events still take place ? The same middle distance event up at Lake 32 and they also had the lovely red carpet finish 😀 and a lovely medal. Hope your training goes well
Thanks for sharing! Well done regardless. I am an absolute pathetic swimmer, no matter how much I train, no matter how many lessons I take, my body is just not cut out for swimming. I love triathlons but can't do them because of the cut-off for the first leg. I always catch up a lot on the cycle leg and hang on during the run. My fight is always with officials, that whilst I understand the cut-offs, it doesn't mean that I can't finish within the overall cutoff for the entire event. They don't seem to understand that if one even misses a cutoff say by a minute, that one can make it up. My suggestion has been give a second cutoff for the swim and a second cutoff on the bike leg and if you don't make the second bike cutoff which will include swim and bike, then pull you. Keep going, take it as a learning curve and a training opportunity of what to do on race morning. Good luck on the next one!!
100% your positivity in the face of something that was wrong and devastating is admirable. I am glad you got an answer. swimming is hard as hell. glad you are gonna keep going.
just seen this as was trying to relive the day again (was my first 70.3 and I loved every minute of it) sorry to hear it, but mistakes were made and you have another chance to enter another event which is not ideal dust yourself off, pick yourself up and do it for your kids! great video and content - keep at it x
Inspiring as ever! You've got such a great attitude and can't wait to see how you get on at your next 70.3. Can't believe the trolling, just awful. It must be hard to ignore xx
Ugh, why are people giving you any kind of grief about this?! That is bananas. As if it wasn't frustrating enough to have made cut off and then be wrongfully pulled off the course. I'm glad they are sort of refunding you via a free entry to another race, though that doesn't make up for the time and also the emotional baggage of a DNF. Next time will be better!
You did amazing, be proud of that swim! With the prestige of these events and cost to compete there are no excuses. Iron-man should be ashamed. Feels very much like what happened to the back of the pack runners at the London Marathon a few years ago with stewards trying to stop people rightfully continuing.
Fantastic. Emotional video. It made it more memorable with your family watching. Ref. Race. 70.3 is damn hard. Don’t be beat up. Certainly don’t let this experience deter you from Triathlon. It’s a beautiful sport. Keep the videos coming. Massive kudos
Good grief! You guys had me balling too!:) Absolutely gutted for you Kelly! Out of adversity comes strength! I know your tough as old boots Kelly. Use the disappointment for motivation and self encouragement to push you in future training and events. It may not be much comfort but” you never gave up! You Never gave up! It’s very easy to wrap it all in when it gets tough but you kept going! Always remember that! No wonder the family are proud of you! Ignore the haters on social media. There will always be people in life looking to put us down for whatever reason and don’t understand why you’re putting yourself out there on social media. No matter your results , by putting yourself out there on social media you’ve no idea how much you encourage and motivate people to give things a try! Keep up the hard work Kelly!
Wow - tell you what you don't need to work on is your mental toughness. It's only matter of time - you have all the attributes. I've done ironman 3 times and I had tears in my eyes watching this- huge kudos to you. An inspiration to your loved ones 🎉
That’s really annoying. It takes a lot to train for a tri Andy it isn’t cheap to enter, so to have it taken away because of an admin mistake is really bad.
Kelly, I have been following your page from the beginning. It is amazing and fun. The hardest part about an IM, is getting to the start line. The easiest part of the IM is racing it. Trust the process and see ya next year at the race! You're an amazing endurance athlete and glad you are a part of the IM and triathlon family. Welcome and Bring the NOISE! Slainte!
You are amazing and what happened has happened, well done you. I do some running videos, on FB iron man channels and other running ones, just to help others My bike is really slow, thus I haven't had the gonads to enter IMW, I have done outlaw twice, great event by the way. I would be raging if that happened to me, well done you, for being so cool but upset. What event are you doing next.
You put yourself on the line and handled it with dignity despite a baffling unfair marshall call on the day. Glad to find ironman have seen sense and compensated for next time. That's the least they could do. You keep going your awesome 🎉
Wow inspiring video. You’re a strong woman, let the disappointment push you to towards your next Ironman. Forget the trolls they’re not worth thinking about.
The British ironman events are just not good for first timers. I'd suggest Barcelona, everything about it is easier. Logistics, weather, course, even the cost, cheap flights and end of season accommodation I doubt it costs any more than a UK one once you add in everything. Sure it's nice to do a home one, but I'd leave it until you have more experience than the first one.
I think it's the least they can do offering you a free entry for next year - not including travel and hotel fees.... let alone 6 months training...... Well Done Kelly I personally think you Rocked!!!
I swim like that, and chose not to do Tri because of that. Yes, I'm not mentally strong enough to get out of the water as one of the last. I'm weak, I know... But keep it up, have fun and know you have support and an awesome crew 🙂
Well said:) You do you and you just keep going. I found your experience was heart wrenching but also inspirational. I find it incredibly sad that people can be unkind in their comments but as you said, they are the minority and they will not stop you but they do need to know the impact of their comments. All the very best and can't wait to you see progress and your adventures in the future. Take care
Cannot believe people take happiness from trolling others. You’ve done amazingly and you are a great example to your kids and other aspiring triathletes and runners. Stay strong, come back stronger and let karma do it’s thing! 💪
Avoid Ironman events and do smaller organisations events as they are much better. Usually more forgiving on cut offs and more athlete focused. Outlaw are the best of the bigger event organisers but Ironman is obviously the cachet brand
So gutted for you Kelly, that was so unfair. Kudos for completing the swim and for your amazing attitude afterwards 👏 trolls are the lowest of the low and don't deserve your time. Keep going ❤
Great effort & so sorry that you were unfairly DQ'd. Not your fault they had a obvious breakdown in communication. What doesn't kill us makes us stronger, & you can take some valuable experience from this first ironman for sure 💪😃❤️👍
Well that video had AAAAAAALL of the emotions. I'm sorry it all went sideways and think you're taking it very well (Way better than I ever would that's for sure). At least you get to work on that swimming now and smash it. Then for it to pivot into the negativity, that took me by surprise. It still baffles me that people would watch a video to then just say mean things. If you've got nothing positive to say and all that. Stay strong and look forward to seeing you out there again soon 😁
Sorry but the response from Ironman just shows that they've become a soul-less corporation. They screwed up and the compensation is entry into another event, but only this year? So you don't get time to reset and build a new training plan. You don't get to go again next year at the event you wanted to complete unless you pay them again. They can do one. Your support crew was awesome. Matt talks a lot of sense. And you did an incredible job digging in and making that cutoff. You should be very proud of yourself.
I'm shocked to hear that there are people who would attack you like this😮 Everyone who's training for triathlon is beyond amazing, especially not professionals❤ And it's such a shame about the mess up with your cut-off time... Anyhow, good luck with your hard work and the next race!
I know there’s human error, but it’s not good enough really. People train for a year for this and get let down like this. Like my mate in Tenby this year, kept showing up on the app as an “incomplete / short swim” So everyone including his family thought he had an issue in the swim. No one could get hold of him or knew where he was etc so his family were scrambling around medical tents etc. Then we saw him hours later on the bike. Turns out one of the refs had passed on info that he had been pulled from the water which wasn’t true. They then tried to stop him going into the run! He was lucky that he was able to convince the ref that they were obviously wrong. People deserve better.
Glad to hear there's no negativity from the Tri community 👍. Ignore the haters. You swum 1900m, so you are a strong 🏊♂️. IM have a lot to answer for. Id suggest you look at taking legal action to recover your costs and to give IM a real incentive to make sure this doesn't happen again. BTW Ive been close to cut-offs and it has never occurred to me that IM could get it wrong. Now I know to check! Stay strong 💪💪💪😍🥰😘
Well, that stinks doesn’t seem right, but you’ll come back next time stronger sorry about that. You know I don’t know ultra ones they told me they said you gotta get through this aid station in 30 seconds. They said then you can come back and get some food but you gotta get out of the aid station so they kinda help me so it doesn’t make a lot of sense but that you’ll be faster next time , congrats though you did well
Dear Kelly, I just wanted to reach out and express my support for you. What a disappointment this unjust disqualification at the triathlon. You’ve always been such an inspiration to so many of us in the sport, showing incredible dedication, strength, and sportsmanship. And your lovely family was there cheering so loudly and proudly; it was heartwarming to see such a strong and supportive family unit. It's disheartening to hear about the negative comments on social media. Please remember that for every troll out there, there are countless people like me who admire and respect you immensely. Keep your head high and continue being the amazing athlete and person that you are. Looking forward to watch you in your next race.
I know you've already had an apology, but I hope organisers watch this video and realise the impact of their stupid decision on the day. So proud of you Kelly, what an incredible inspiration you are to your children and to everyone watching. ❤
It saddens me to see the negativity online. You are good enough because you made it prior to the cut off. 18 months ago I was a non Swimmer and I’ve battled my journey with swimming trying to get to the start line of IRONMAN Wales. Swimming is hard, it’s a skill and anyone who puts themselves out of their comfort zone should be proud. You should be proud. Look forward to seeing what you take on next.
What sort of creatures would make negative comments regarding SOMEONE WHO ACTUALLY MADE CUTOFF!! what wombles!! The organisers should be able to see immediately with the chip timing that you made cutoff, they would have had at least 5 mins from exiting the water to getting through transition and out onto the bike to confirm this, it's not as if it was down to a few seconds, it was over half a minute inside. Hopefully that 'Free' entry extends to next years race!, it's the bare minimum they should offer.
Fu#k the haters. They don't define you. Use their hate to push yourself in training and when time get hard in race. Know that you have Matts and your family's love waiting for you and of course your close friends. This is so shocking to hear that this happened to you and can't imagine the pain felt when they disqualified you. You will bounce back stronger than ever. It won't be easy, but keep that fire and keep chasing your dreams. All the best for the rest of the year
So disappointing about the IM error, but now you know you can do that swim, and next time, you'll be strong and take that confidence with you. As for trolls - imagine sitting behind your keyboard and wanting to take the mick or being judgmental and negative about others publicly. Why? Jealousy, maybe. I enjoy your channel as you set yourself big, big goals, sometimes you'll achieve them, sometimes not, but it's great watching your effort and determination regardless. There are also relatively few female UA-cam athletes out there, so it's refreshing to watch those that are, and your vlogs are quality. Hope to be able to follow you on the journey to your next goal, which I'm sure will end in a huge success.
First 1/2 my wife did she missed the swim cutoff. 6 years later, she's qualified and did Kona twice. You can do it too!
Remember that there are much more people who support your efforts, we're just quiet. The noisy types, typing nasty comments from mum's basement, they've never achieve what you have. Don't waste energy for them.
All the best to you and your lovely family. Keep fighting!
Its unfortunate but the take away from this is your support crew is awesome. Cant put a price on that 👌

Thanks Kelly, great vid, that was very moving. Well done on all your hard work, you are brilliant! Best wishes for the next one.
Really enjoyed your video and so gutted for you. Swimming is hard and you should be proud of yourself for battling through it and making that cutoff 👏 keep training and I'm sure you will smash the next one you enter 😊🏊🚴🏃
So sorry that people have been nasty. Best ignored and not acknowledged. Huge kudos for going outside of your comfort zone. You are amazing!
Kelly you are inspirational! I am an appalling swimmer and can fully appreciate how brave you were to even attempt a triathlon. I’m so sorry you received hate from some people. Keep doing what you do-you’re awesome!
Well done , youll get it next time 💪💪
2 DNF one one swim and one on the bike. 3 time I smashed it.
This year I am doing full distance
Good luck on your journey
Great video of the highs and lows of triathlon! Well done and can’t wait for your next 70.3, you’ll smash it 👏
Awful treatment Kelly, at least the error is recognised and I hope you bounce back stronger
Hey Kelly - I can't understand why some people have to be so cruel online - it's very sad.

Boy that was so emotional I really feel for you look forward to the next one which you will smash strong women just get stronger xx
Thanks for your honesty Kelly It helps us less able runners your determination is impressive Well done and good luck I love your videos

Great video, moving forward try Total Immersion swimming, stick with it and it will help greatly. It may seem boring but works!
I swim like that, and chose not to do Tri because of that.
Yes, I'm not mentally strong enough to get out of the water as one of the last.
I'm weak, I know...

Like my mate in Tenby this year, kept showing up on the app as an “incomplete / short swim”
So everyone including his family thought he had an issue in the swim.
The way you were treated was disgraceful, ignore those arseholes online, all probably 20 stone trolls glued to their screens for 20 hours a day
Well, that stinks doesn’t seem right, but you’ll come back next time stronger sorry about that.
❤
Unlucky girl my swims are shit and rag every race with mins to spare but IM work to the second on transitions , no give that the rule . Keep on trying
Road bikes, lol.
