    I've studied with Bruce a few times, and followed his practices for years. I've studied with other teachers, but none have had the same lasting impact. I'm still learning from things he said years ago, that I'm only now able to understand. He is the real deal, and he has walked the talk.

    Been studying w Bruce for a while now, and he's not always easy to handle, he's ok being from new York, and he's not afraid to ruffle feathers. But his students demonstrate an exceptional level of skill, to say nothing of the man himself. He's the real deal, and any Popeye lookin fool should ask to throw a punch at him. Lots of fake stuff out there, but this cat has the goods.

    The meditation at the end was amazing. At the beginning I felt more tension than I ever have (and I've been practicing Insight meditation for 12 years) and it just enabled me to let go of about 90% and I could literally feel it from the top down!

    Studied with Bruce in the '90's and this meditation technique is the one true thing that has always stayed with me. I learned it over a weekend, there's a lot to it he can articulate though it is simple at its core.
    Thank you for this interview and overview/guided meditation.

    Kind of refreshing to listen to a Westerner who understands these esoteric eastern methodologies and is able to explain them in a way that is non-pretentious and accessible. So often when you listen to other so-called masters they try to sound like master Po or quite Chang Caine talking in slow motion like they’re in a trance I love it that this guy has a thick New York accent!

    I don't care much about if his ego is strong, small, big, weak or whatever. If I have the reactions to it, I would rather look at my reactions and find out why are they the way they are.
    Once I happened to spend with this guy a whole day, when he was visiting my country - just strolling with him around the city, talking, keeping quiet - nothing special. And the way my being was affected by this "nothing special" with him is hard to describe and my mind was put into rest for quite a time.

      It's also about being spontaneous and in the moment responding to your immediate circumstance and the energies around you. If you look at this particular conversation Ian is stuck or fixated in his particular psychologically conditioned pattern and is obviously struggling to let go of his strict adherence to following script. Add the fact of fear what someone else is going to think (which is so common in a TV/recording setting) it obviously adds a stifled energy. Bruce didn't take to lightly to the subliminals and doesn't play the TV time limit game. Also if Ian isn't showing a genuine heartfelt interest in the speaker then this type of entrainment can lead to elements of discord within the flow of conversation. Basically Ian's following a script and wanting to control the direction and Bruce is reading energy and attempting to help him to let go.. Ian didn't appear very responsive. And toward the end Bruce just basically highlighted the truth that repression will suck the life out of you unless you make an effort to change.. Bruce's craazy wisdom! it's a beutifull thing

    STILL funny after all of these years !
    8 Black Belts by the time he was 18 years old ?
    And he started at 14 years old ?
    And he taught thousands of students ?
    And he certified 40 black belts ?
    By the time he was 18 years old ?
    And you BELIEVE this nonsense ?
    Now THAT'S funny !
    Remember, in the 1960s, 1970s, comic books were LOADED with "Instant Martial Arts" ads, and Bruce loved those comic books !
    He's got a GREAT line of s**t, but have you ever seen this guy in "action" ?
    Watch some of his clips, IF you can find any, then check out some Jet Li clips and you tell me....

      I've seen a couple of clips like this, old, grainy, no sound.
      You'll notice that the 'attacker' is signalling his 'intent' from a mile away.
      The charging 'attacks' and telegraphed kicks are so obvious I'd have to think these are staged. Even if they're real, anyone with a few months of training should be able to defend themselves against these 'attacks'.
      And Frantzis looks clumsy.
      Here's Michael Wong, he's got quite a few of these clips, see what you think.

    He's fun. I always like his stuff. That whole shunyata thing though... I see it differently. It's not "emptiness", it's suchness. It's stillness. Anyone who seriously meditates has probably had that "ah ha" when they get past the mind and realize shunyata... but that's not the "truth", only a "layer" of the truth. Shunyata is not devoid of qualities, it is "phenomenal", it gives rise, which means the wuji has a nature I think. We have our natures, but shunyata "is", it has existence.

  • @mthoodstyle

  • @taijilou
    @taijilou 11 років тому

    I like how he really talks about relaxation in tai chi. That's important on so many levels. It's not like our western laziness, because it requires so much focus to achieve. It reminds me again of stillness... our nature is this ever permeating stillness, so is it stillness which gives rise to our nature, or is it our nature that moves around stillness? It really hits home when you realize it. It's actually quite an uncomfortable notion when you really ruminate on it.Living it is freeing, though

    I personally don't like so-called egoless people. They are like a flat beer.
    Bruce knows his stuff and likes to tell a good story. BTW, there are plenty of high level chi-kung guys with a spare tire. Don't let that fool you bro. Don't judge, do like I did and go 'play' with them a bit and you might have a 'lil' surprise. I am not talking about provoking them to a fight. Just ask politely and offer to pay for their time, maybe an hour, some will be more than happy to be put to the test and do all kinds of things with you like push hands, etc. This could be harder with an older Asian guy as they tend to take themselves a little seriously. Build rapport first and be honest as to where you are coming from. If they are for real, they will laugh and will be happy to proceed.

    It was really more his abrasive style that I was commenting on. Perhaps it is his "new yorker" ness that I am responding to. It was a hard interview to watch for me but that is just my own perspective. Others may find his "strong" sense of self appealing. I find it to be a little much.

  • @taijilou
    @taijilou 11 років тому +3

    When you realize stillness as the self, you have to be really careful. That's when karma ripens and you start getting tested. You gain dissociative awareness which makes all kinds of weird stuff happen, and you're only seeing the most superficial layer. The consequences of your thoughts ripen quicker, because when you meditate your thoughts are more potent. This means you can serve God (what I call God, I love God.) or you serve your ego. That's when you mess up.

  • @greescreenfootage
    @greescreenfootage 11 років тому +3

    Yep, he's a mouthy New Yorker. Kind of goes against the grain of what a 'spiritual person' is supposed to be like. I kinda like it - can also appreciate its a bit grating for some sensitive souls. However, that's all surface dressing (and any old fool can make show of 'great meekness and humbleness' whilst still really being a socio-path). Question is does he have any worthwhile teaching to impart? I believe he does. Everything else is not that important.

    often times it's bc we see in other people reflected back what we are really ourselves. try to understand from his perspective... constant people in the US deny eastern philosophy and life expereinces like working with chi enenrgy and chakras.... after you experience it and KNOW its real not just because you read it, and you have devoted your entire life to it, and people still tell you its not real b/c they're ignorant and will never be able to experience it, it can get frustrating :)

    comments here are hilarious, about strong egos and what "one would expect in a taoist master", that statement in itself is an oxymoron to one who has actually met a few taoists. how about we worry less about the messenger and listen to his message, which, as he says himself, is "practice".

      +advaitanr2 you seem blinded by the superficial/surface. He's not suggesting he's exceptional in any way (even though he actually is) BK's merely trying to express that this potential resides within - and that the potential to tap into this state can be realised.

    good interview though it was hilarious at times, the indian accent speak (as Bruce describes the moment when an indian doctor told him he's had it) and when Bruce responds to Iain that he's been channelling chi the whole throughout the interview - gave me a chuckle.

    I totally agree with you and so my denied inner "blow hard" is responding to this gentleman's. But just because I also share the same tendency does not necessarily mean it isn't there in him. I will say it was not my most polite youtube comment.
    I am not sure what you mean by "one power". Enneagram? Universal power source? I really just pick up on a very entrenched personality filled with lots of hard held opinions and also great achievement if his story is true. More projection? Perhaps, lol.

    Wow, what a character - so much energy & richness of content, yet…what an annoying man - SO full of himself, gave the impression that he had nothing…NOTHING left to learn. Almost felt intimidated on behalf of Ian, yet, he seemed to be really enjoying it. So hard to work out: totally authentic, unapologetic, powerful, deep, yet…arrghhh…sorry, so ‘American’ (from a cliche Brit perspective) brash, louche, & loud with no room for subtlety or nuance. Maybe like an artisan chilli sauce, it’s brilliant, tasty, but it just swamps everything else

      It's called Narcissism. If you look I to the Enneagram model of personality, Bruce fits the unhealthy expression of it perfectly. He has enough of the healthy traits too, which allows him to be accomplished.
      Bruce is an E8 who has done zero spiritual work in the Christian fruits-of-the-spirit or Western-psychological sense of that word.
      An NLP teacher once summed it up to me clearly when referring to the guy who ghost-wrote at least one of Bruce's books:
      "The Tao is EVERYTHING, which means it's big enough to hide anything behind, especially from yourself."
      A good term for this is "spiritual bypassing," where teachers maintain big shadows they don't work on because they are focused on what they have made progress on rather than their weak spots.

      +scroubious Your perception is just flawed/limited. Common misunderstanding associated with jealousy and regret. Just trying to make yourself appear like a better person by trying to find faults in others, You must think yourself pretty superior in intelligence, with the judgmental clarity of a god to think you can sum up and label a mans personality/character with just a word, Who's the one really with the Ego? Thinking you have it all figured out with your superior moral character, which is only a result from your constant indoctrination and disconnection with nature, You take so easily the paradigm which has been presented to you through drawings or television, without ever questioning a thing. In reality it is this way of thinking which keeps you lazy, ignorant, and docile, "Which is precisely the reason you will fall into Abi Hell/ endless transmigration" ;]

      Believe or non-belief changes nothing. Belief doesn't make it so, non-belief doesn't make it not so. Experience makes things so. If you know, you don't have to believe. If you believe you may or may not know. Come back when you know something.
