- Black Sabbath's 'Hand of Doom' contains some scary imagery in the lyrics, and has a powerful message about something that is very important to avoid. This band's music has been a pleasure to discover!

This song was written after the band met several US soldiers, who served in Vietnam, that were suffering from PTSD and had turned to hard drugs to escape the horrors that held their thoughts in thrall.
Black Sabbath actually began as a hippie-style band called Earth. But the realities of the Vietnam war, the tragic end of the Summer of Love, etc. disillusioned them and they decided to change their name and start telling it like it was. So their name was more associated with the state of the world they perceived around them than with religion...in fact, Geezer Butler (bass player, who wrote most of the lyrics) was horrified when he saw that the record company had put an upside-down cross on the rear cover of their debut album.
They changed their name to Black Sabbath because there was another band in England also called Earth and they were being confused with that other band.
ELECTRIC FUNERAL from this album is about Nuclear War
Amazing song and message
Ozzy is not the perfect singer, but the perfect singer for Black Sabbath. Totally fits the music. The harrowing anguished quality of his voice is so unique. Absolutely iconic band.
Very well said!
Black Sabbath went from Black Sabbath to just a heavy metal band when ozzy left and Dio took over.
And they werent heavy metal before that..well their first 6 albums arent though theyre the blueprint.
@@ostrichman Agreed.
This song is actually a reference to Vietnam veterans who were using heroin to cope with the horrors of that war, and with the PTSD they were suffering, which at the time, nobody had a clue about.
Geezer talks about playing two US air bases, one in England and one in (then) West Germany which were being used as halfway houses for returning veterans to help them get off the heroin addictions they'd developed in Vietnam
When my parents first heard Black Sabbath coming from my bedroom they made me bring my radio and the tape out and listened to the songs and the lyrics, they changed their minds about Black Sabbath. I was the seventh kid in a big Irish Catholic Family and I think our parents did a pretty good job assimilating new music as it came about
Another warning song is "Snowblind" about coke,
An early eco-friendly heavy metal song is "Into the Void" Then 'Symptom of the Universe' is a masterpiece of metal/jazz fusion if you can believe it!!
Very deep and meaningful. Loved that foundation of bass and drums, I could have listened to that for hours quite apart from the guitar and lyrics...
Parents back in the day thought their kids would get possessed by Satan or summon a demon listening to this music. Total ignorance and fear of something new and different is all it was.
Great job Coach and Mrs. Coach! Can't wait to see what's coming up next.
Thanks very much. Yes, ignorance and fear sums it up well.
To be fair, Sabbath also did a few songs in favor of marijuana use, most notably the song "Sweet Leaf." But you're right...their songs are deep and rich with meaning, and they never pulled their punches.
My father was listening to this when it came out so I grew up listening to it. I’m always thankful for that.
That's awesome!
Don't forget Planet Caravan and Solitude. You'll love them. Very mellow , with flute. 🇦🇺
8:30 Take the first side of their debut album that caused such moral panic in some quarters: Black Sabbath (the song) is about someone being terrified by an encounter with satan and calling to god for help. The Wizard is about a wizard walking through his community banishing demons. Behind the Wall of Sleep is about someone waking from a nightmare and realising everythings ok, and NIB is about lucifer falling in love with a human woman and renouncing evil to be with her. Dark themes? Sure. Strict biblical accuracy? Hardly. But I don’t see how anyone who was paying attention could think they were devil worshippers or any of that nonsense
This is one of my favorite Sabbath songs 🎵. Bill Ward is a drumming God and Geezer is a poet, Tony is the riff master and Ozzy is well Ozzy 👌
Paranoid is the second Black Sabbath album with their self titled being the first.
Thanks for the info. They were pretty close together if we remember correctly.
@CoachCastTV they were released the same year but recorded about a year apart, I believe, so yes, still early material.
Mr. and Mrs. Coach. YOU Get IT! I was 13 when this album hit, , but this song did make me think with it's vivid lyrics, & what I did see of those who were entrapped in that addiction that it was a big part of keeping me away from it. Yes I experimented (drank beer and some weed). It was and still is a WARNING. Great reaction Thank YOU.
Thanks very much, and glad you did stay away from it.
@@CoachCastTV Very much a warning about heroin, which none of the Black Sabbath members ever got involved in to my knowledge.
Nailed it. Yet again.
Luv when u guys react to BS!!!
Bill ward with the rhumba rhythm using the rimshot to full advantage.
Black Sabbath had a lot of warning songs
Yes, 'Warning' being one of them 😂
Mr & Mrs Coach, You hit the nail on the head, this is an anti-drugs track funny seeing how the bands use is well documented. Ok so I first came across Black Sabbath about 1971 I was sixteen at the time, but I had a Hi-Fi system that I could plug in cans so my parents didn't know what I was listening to but when they found out they were Ok about my choice of music. (Sabbath, Purple, Zeppelin, Floyd and a few others). But I am from the UK (please don't take that the wrong way).
If you guys ever listen to this again, you should listen to it with "Rat Salad", it's a follow on instrumental and drum solo, it's killer.
When Ozzy left, the writing of the songs changed the band stopped being so socially conscious and became a whole lot more mystical and that was because of Ronnie James Dio, he may have taken over the writing from Geezer Butler.
Thats BS OZZY BY FAR IS THE greatest singer of BLACK SABBATH ,HE ALSO BECAME EVEN BETTER IN HIS SOLO BANDS CAREER, BESIDES PARANOID YOU HAVE TO LISTEN TO ALL THER MUSIC.
Right on! Yeah definitely the original Sabbath lineup is the best. Magic combo. Ozzy's voice is so cool, he had an eerie madman vibe that influenced so many. The prince of darkness, some call him haha. On a side not see Toni Iommi in Jethro Jull in the 1968 (Rolling Stones) Rock N Roll Circus ua-cam.com/video/0TsFPHLTCKo/v-deo.htmlsi=AHh_m_CteDrSUtXm Iommi was their guitarist for a few weeks or so. And he moved on to be a huge pioneer very soon
Just FYI, the first Black Sabbath album was Black Sabbath.
Thanks, yes, this next album came soon after.
Black Sabbath 1968-eternity🤘
Oh yeah, I've played this one so many times live! This is one of my favorite bass riffs. Damn near the entire "Paranoid" album, their second one, is fun to play on bass, "Rat Salad" the only one that doesn't do much for me. Slayer covered "Hand of Doom" a while back and it was one of the few Slayer recordings where you could hear the bass.
Let's see . . . recommendations. How about "Mob Rules" or "Time Machine" by Sabbath during the Dio years? Neither has an official video, but they're both fast rockers that are kind of similar to each other. If you want something from the Ozzy years, how about "Supernaut"? That one has a great guitar riff.
Also, rest in peace to the great John Sykes. He played with Whitesnake and Blue Murder. He played the incredible solo in Whitesnake's "Still of the Night," though he wasn't in the official video.
Thanks for the info. And yeah, RIP John.
My personal favorite song from Black Sabbath with Ozzy is: Fairies wear Boots
Excellent song!
i had to go to your black sabbath playlist to see what u guys have not played yet, Snowblind is ozzy song that explains what is first drug trip was like, also Sabbath Bloody Sabbath is a top 5 bs song!!! ty guys for going back to BS!!!
We will definitely do more. Thanks for watching!
hi Coach and Mrs coach great reaction one of my fav of the album.
Thanks very much!
Hey team ‼️ Well, thank goodness I never did drugs. Like one of the lyrics he sang. I wouldn’t want my skin to turn green 🤢
Yeah, no doubt.
pretty sure this is the song that started head banging
7:44 on your vid. you can't help it
😅
Ozzy was a very Black Sabbath vocalist
you should check out the 1970 live performance of this song. From the same gig as the War Pigs video you reviewed
Geezer wrote the lyrics after seeing the soldiers coming back from Vietnam hooked on morphine and turning to Heroin. And how war and drugs ruined their lives.
Really enjoyed your review! Definitely recommend the song "A National Acrobat" from the Sabbath Bloody Sabbath album.
rockero like n° 5
One mistake in those lyrics. Ozzie does not say "To take the sleep that you don't know," he says "To take the sweet that you don't know."
Thanks for the correction. 👍
A few mistakes in there but nothing that takes away from the general gist of the song.
❤
They went to a military hospital in Germany during Vietnam War and saw how many soldiers were addicted to morphine to escape the horrors they witnessed in combat
England also
la señora entrenadora es de las mías
also Ive seen OZZY quite a few times, i think its a tie between OZZY/ sabbath reunion shows and Dead shows, but I tried not to like DIO but couldn't do it, the album Mob Rules was too much, the guy was awesome
Back in the day, there was a lot of sectarian competition between Ozzy and Dio fans. I never really understood it: both are great, and both contributed a slate of absolute classics. If you ever want to try more Sabbath with Dio, I highly recommend "Sign of the Southern Cross", "Neon Knights", and "Lonely Is The Word" to begin with.
Thanks so much!
You two are killing it! Hand of Doom has such a jazzy and bluesy feel. Love the sabbath reactions more than you guys know.
I have a playlist of my favorite Sabbath stuff on spotify, 50 some odd songs in order of which I like the most. Would love to share, if you all were interested in hearing some more of the best music of all time. God bless 💪🏼
Thanks very much. We're always open to more info about this band and their songs.
It's not the earliest album. It came out late 1970. The album Black Sabbath was the first album in early 1970.
The Paranoid album is superb.
The song Solitude on the third album Master of Reality is a slow song sung by Ozzy, but does not sound like him at all.
Black Sabbath just wasn't Black Sabbath without Ozzy. I will only ever listen to Black Sabbath with Ozzy as the singer. Ever since I bought the album Paranoid in the early 70s. But that's just me.
This is about Vietnam vets and their addiction to heroine
Definitely a bad path to go down.
Snowblind is another good anti drug song written from the perspective of the addict
Heaven and Hell the cd with Dio is great but Ozzy is awesome!!
I dont know if its a warning...some might see it as an affirmation...if you play the song backwards Heroin sounds like a laugh.
you know the way they are portrayed in media at least back than was that they are a bad influence, but those folks never even listened to the words, did you ever here the song" Ater Forever", i was surprised by it the band is not promoting Christianity but in a respectful way contemplating it, its weird they invented heavy metal and took all the criticism and they arnt even heavy by todays standardsaf
We did hear that one and you're right about how bu today's standards they aren't even that out there.
Comparation of Dio's and Ozzy's vocals is ridiculous in some sense.
They are DIFFEREND KIND of singers. They both sing in a way different styles.
Ozzy (especially in Sabbath) sings in a kinda dark punk style. And it fits brilliantly to Tony's and Geezer's heavy blues guitars and to Bill's jazz drums.
While Dio has a kinda operatic approach. And it fits pretty good, but not that brilliantly.
Of course Dio has a better voice. But it works when it comes to sing an "operatic" song.
Sabbath with Ozzy just didn't compose songs for an "operatic" vocal because they had a singer with a different approach.
Imagine song like Wizard with a Dio's voice. It just doesn't fit no matter how great melismatic or whatever Dio has.
And of course Ozzy would never sing something like Stargazer.
Both of them are great but each in his own way.
Well said.
Dio is a better vocalist, but was not a better fit for Black Sabbath. Ozzy is the original from 69- 78. Oz is a PERFECT fit with Sabbaths songs.
It seems like the lady is not into it. I don’t see her moving lol
Unfortunately the God set judged this band due to their name. What they missed out on was the deep message of most of the bands songs without ever hearing any. These same people would preach tolerance, but in turn, show absolutely none.
Judge not. Less is more. 🇦🇺
Ozzy > Dio
