Its solid. Not the best, not the worst. Project Itoh's source material in this case is so much in your head, they did a good job of bringing that to life, or rather an ok job of it. The hands down best anime blood scene ever, lunch anyone?

I don't have anything specific to say about this video or film, but I wanted to commend you on a great first week of Studio4C Month! I always find your studio deep-dives to be really interesting even when I've never seen or even heard of the vast majority of these films or creators. It's fun to trace the lineage and find the connecting threads in the studio's style and topics. Keep up the awesome work!

I spent my time from that restaurant scene until the end pondering the concepts they were exploring on what defines human nature and the value of free will and artificial control of both. I think the thing that sums things up is that shot at the end where Brave New World is tossed on a flaming pile of books on human learning and methods of artificial control of human nature. It might be about as blatant as you can get with an analogy but it still worked.
I really didn't take a closer look at the animation itself until I was talking about the film with someone later who commented on it.
Originally I had just randomly come across it, knew nothing about it, and just watched it (with it being the first of the Project Itoh movies I had seen) as I do..... forced limitation of exposure to unknown stories/games/whatever, see a title I think is neat (which was literally the case here) > watch it, see a single image of a manga that I like > read it.... hell with Juuni Kokki it was me finding a single track from its soundtrack in an AMV (track 8 from its soundtrack, Fuushun) and just went off to find and watch the show based on that. It does become hit or miss, but this essentially is a hard block on the formation of preconceptions and lets me sit there blindly giving the finger to any hype train that might be on the loose...... though I think it is an extension of the days when I would only have cover art and the back cover as the info I had about a book or game or movie etc. (way to go dating myself there)
Critique of its animation aside, this movie got me to think in a way I wouldn't have even contemplated occurring after seeing the first few min of it. Before the restaurant scene, I was contemplating the world it was set, then as I said, from that scene on, I was contemplating the concepts they were going on about. Overall I really liked it due to this above all else. But that is about as idiosyncratic of a reason for liking something as it gets.
Anything that get me to stop, clear my head and think... regardless of why they do this, or even if they should do it... are special and precious things for that alone.

For all of it's flaws, I really like this movie mainly for the subject matter that it explores. I find Psycho Pass is a nice companion piece to this.

The dystopian world of Harmony is better than ours, because in there poor countries at least get the chance to use tech to make their own meds.
In here everyone has to buy them from the same companies which have an effective monopoly on medications, in a system in which rich countries subsidize poor ones, and poor ones have to go into debt in order to buy medications anyways, and everyone loses, except big pharma.

I do have to agree with a lot the whole bluntness aspect of this film; the novel details Tuan to be noticeably more worn-down (think eye-bags, crow's feet, sagging skin) due to voluntarily substance abuse, and then there's the blood-red coat she's supposed to wear (as she does in the novel) denoting her role in society and also symbolizing her red-blooded humanity she has compared to the artificial, pastel-colored Japan she ends up coming back to. It's also the fact that even in its relative safety and boringness, these medicine-obsessed societies are a bright rainbow of pastels: white on green, blue on white, peach on white, etc. It connotes such a society to a nursery, where even adults are coddled into impotence and a 72-year old administrator can look like she's in her early 30s. The movie puts everything in pink, which only partially gets the message across.
I think if the adaptation took the form of a short series with more faithfulness to the details, deliberately using same-face syndrome, and other visual cues, Harmony as a visual experience might have been much better received. As it stands, the movie feels much less disturbing and much more boring to look at without these fine details being included.

Nice work, nice vid. I appreciate your thoughts on this.
I watched the movie some years ago and its always been with me since. Its one of those that stand out, to me.
After hearing the things you highlighted, I'd have to go watch it again to look at it with a slightly older perspective.

I rather liked it, it reminded me of the novels of Asimov and Philip K Dick, scifi in their era. Another thing, out of all the Project Itoh movies, this one was the best simply because the story wasnt crushed over its own weight eventually becoming confusing to watch.

I read the book way before the movie came out and the interpretation was close, but also quite very different. This is both in aesthetic/concept and meaning/intention. Aesthetic/concept for things made to look more robotic vs the artificial synthetic life that Japan has in the book such as the restaurant being like a living plastic building. Meaning/intention for how the relationships that the mc has are all slightly butchered to the point were it's hard to figure the tone some character interactions should have such as the ending speech and the mc's dread acceptance that going off the mountain will kill her autonomy and save her physical existence just to spite that who wouldn't care.

I find the out of place CG acceptable (I don't have a picky palette), and "monotonous" feeling a good thing. Makes it easy to focus on the conversation.
The bleakness of the art and ideas are very fitting in my eyes.
Though I don't agree with Itou's philosophy, I still enjoyed the film.

I found this film very intriguing, particularly in the world building, but, yes, it did suffer from a lack of resources. What a shame, I would have liked to be able to recommend this to more people but too many will be turned off by the visuals.

I really apreciated the philisophical aspects of the film. It is a bit heavy on "info dumps" if thats how you want to call it but i don't find that to be a fault. Then again i like Oshii's Innocence that a lot of people find difficult with all the dialogue that just goes on and on. A film is a visual medium but not in a way that excludes other methods of storytelling - nothing wrong with a film where people just talk, in my opinion. Funny how i loved this one but hated Empire of corpses - that film had every single reference to the 19th century there exists in popular culture like wtf was the book like that its worse than the league of extraordinary gentlemen just we have them all gotta cram them all in there just why.

I always found this to be the most dull looking of the three Project Itoh anime films, and so I was surprised to learn that it was by Studio 4º and the director behind Tekkonkinkreet no less. Just the art direction never truly stuck out to me, and I find the character designs a bit bland in comparison to the ones in The Empire of Corpses and Genocidal Organ.

It was a cool experience to see an anime based on an actual novel. Not a light novel or a visual novel. I chalked up the movie's pace and info-dumping habit to its novel-ness. Anyways, I thought the ending was really interesting. Things like that don't happen in anime often.

Memes aside. I love that we're seeing the 4°C Studio Cinematography being properly discussed by someone who really knows what he does, I didn't even knew this movie existed! Albeit the natural landscapes are beautifully made I'm not sure If I'll like this premise as much as I liked Teekkon, Springgan, Children of the Sea or Genius Party... I might get it through the high tides If I feel like it.

While not the best of anime features I do feel Harmony gets somewhat of a bad rap. I would probably place this anime squarely in the middle of the road. Nothing so bad as to make it unwatchable but nothing so great as to make it a must see. I have no regrets adding it to my collection.

Most of decisions from Hayakawa, which is an original Japanese publisher of Harmony, was just stupid. The company found that potential profits of “hardcore” SF (which is well known for Hayakawa) combined with “otaku”-ish tropes from Project itoh’s work. Hayakawa still leans on that side, especially on Yuri SF.
Anyway, after publishing of Empire of the corps(which is not from hayakawa but from kadokawa iirc), they rush to make Project itoh as a big name. Oh, how convenient to bend what they want from his work, ‘Cause he is already gone. Hell, it was announced as “Project Itoh Keikaku” when keikaku literally means project and itoh used English nickname as “Project itoh”. And calling him “The author of unfortunate early dying(夭折の作家)”. His dying is unfortunate, sure, but make it a selling point? Seriously? That shows how much Hayakawa actually gave a shit for respect the author.
So Hayakwa called big names, with out careful consideration. Like, red juice for whole character key designs? Because red juice was also involved in other “otaku”-ish “hardcore” sf Beatless, or Guilty Crown made by Studio I.G.? Did they really think that red juice’s touch fit into Itoh’s tone? (No offense for red juice. Red juice is a great illustrator for his/her own works) This whole project, at least for Project itoh’s fans, is mocking the author and just milking out whaterver Hayakawa wanted. Only comics(manga) adaptation of Harmony from Minato fumi was worth. None of others? I don’t care if not I hate. Honestly, I feel furious when re-broadcast version of PSYCO-PASS including mention for project itoh’s works.

honestly... from the 3 Itoh movies... I only liked empire of corpses... genocidal organ was terrible, harmony was a little better but still it wasn't good... the only reason I finished it was because of Redjuice's character design.

Not a fan of Harmony the plot and execution are to put it nicely, bad. The whole thing is a bit of a train wreck. I don't like 'tell don't show' media, it is heavy on info dumps. Also for me, it leans on too much on CG without a sort of masking effect. I still remember my reaction to the dub, when Rial said those lines about the female anatomy, it was utter cringe. Funnily enough, I actually enjoyed Genocidal Organ quite a bit...

Definitely one of my most hated anime movies, in spite of how fantastic the high concept is. The lead is cold & irascable in an alienating way, with the more intriguing critique of conformist neoliberalism & social divide between global powers underutilized. I feel this would work much better as a novel, using the EHTML formatting to play with the emotions in a way the talky & ultimately bland-look8ng film did not.
Only the scenes of the people's last moments of life worked for me, but I'd welcome disagreement
