L Mascot Horror Vs W Gregory Horror Show. This show was ACTUALLY filled with deep lore, not vague hits to potential lore like FNAF, and I'm surprised the Gregory Horror Show franchise stayed so niche
You know what might've worked well for Judgement boy? If he asks you questions that are directly tied to your play style. For example... He asks you what's more important, your health or your posessions? If you say health, even though earlier you've spent a long time with a low health bar instead of using healing items, he calls you out on it. Or he asks you if it's ever ok to steal, and depending on if you've stolen items from people's rooms, you can't answer no without getting punished for it. Maybe the questions get more tricky later on. Spying through keyholes could tie into a question about privacy, having the dirty magazine could have a question about kids doing things they are too young for, etc... By the way, I genuinely thought the Gregory game came first, not the show. Everything just seemed to work so much better as a game. The concept, the characters, the story... It honestly felt really weird watching the show afterwards.
i feel like another fun one that granted, would only work if you encounter judgement boy later on then usual would be “Tell me, is your mission to aid Death at upmost importance to you?” or something along the lines, if you answer yes…but just so happened to be hoarding a soul for your own benefit instead of returning it to death, he’d ‘fail’ you another cool one that can actually make for a good tutorial moment that most players over look would be a morality question if your holding food item. Like say… “Your a farmer on his way to the market with a fresh harvest looking forward to sell your crops. On the way there however you recognized a beaten and helpless man in a corner as a close friend, crying about ‘being hungry’ and begging for food! Do you bring your crops to the market for profit, or do you feed your hungry friend?” Answer yes. “I see, you say you’ll feed the man. But i think a resident here would disagree if i asked, JUDGEMENT NOW!”……”You kept your goods to yourself and traded them at the market, in the meantime the friend on the street watches as the man they thought was there friend completely ignore them, and wallowed on the ground unable to move till they starved. It was your choice, and you have to live with it!”
They might have wanted to do that, but had to change it for time constraints or something. Besides, it seems a bit complex. How would you program something like that?
@@zafool4997 i'm not a programmer, but it wouldn't be that bad. It's just a series of switches, checks and timers. Start a timer whenever your health gets below a certain point, while you also have a healing item in your inventory. Same thing would be checked after picking up a new item. If a couple minutes pass and you haven't used any healing items or healed in another way, but the item is still in your inventory, then turn on a switch. If you DO use it, turn on a different switch. Depending on which switch is active, Judgement boy will know what you did. If you never got far enough to turn on either switch, then Judgement boy wouldn't even ask you the question. Instead he'll ask a more general question. Like about stealing or privacy. Something which you're more likey to have already done. In my version of the game, you probably need to meet Judgement boy three different times and answer the questions honestly each time to get his soul.
There were points as a kid that I was convinced this game was something I'd dreamt up, because everytime I spoke about it, nobody I knew had ever heard of it, I just remember vividly how much Catherine the nurse scared me on my first playthrough.
I was wondering why this looked so familiar, since I had never heard of this game, then I realized when I was a kid I'd seen a show called "Pecola" on TV, which was also created by Naomi Iwata.
Iwata's shows are all great, I used to watch Midnight Horror School as a kid, I think the entire series is on UA-cam too, I highly recommend it, the concept is super cute, about a school for anthropomorphic lost items that want to find their special abilities to make miracles happen in real life, a must watch during Halloween
Gregory Horror Show's character designs are on a whole other level in terms of creativity. I love the concepts that some of them have and the execution is super visually interesting, which yes it's mainly due to the art style, but they work great in other styles too. I still want to know how someone managed to come up with characters like Judgement Boy and Catherine because they're just so odd yet unique.
People have already said it, but I'm just confirming it; This game has the exact same style as an obscure T.V. show I watched as a kid called _Pecola,_ which, coincidentally, was also created by the same studio and Naomi Itawa. Absolutely mind-blowing that this has a connection to a weird, niche show I saw as a kid... and is an OFFICIAL licensed product by the SAME studio.
Kinda weird how the horror show for mummy dog is just "Hey, would you willingly take this massive pill? You definitely already know I want to kill you, but would you do it anyways??" And you die because you take the pill that definitely was made to kill you
Opening up with a clickbait apology because of the cursed algorithm is very honest and brave, especially since I almost skipped it due to the title. The scene almost an hour in though, yeah that's a subscribe.
I was seriously just thinking about this game a few days ago and I’m so happy to see it hasn’t been forgotten. The art director(?) also created one of my favorite cartoons (pecola) growing up back when we only had free cable named and square/cube style makes his work so iconic to me
I clicked on this video because of the character design. i'm from the US and have never once heard of this, but the art style reminds me of a show i watched on Qubo a long time ago called "Pecola"
@TheGameCupboard that is....absolutely wild to me. I didn't particularly like the show but I remember watching it (before qubo was shut down)and that's such a total shift
Found this game when Joel played through it on stream a few years back, and fell in love. As for the ending, it's very in line with a rather dark quote I've heard, that Hell is a place you send yourself. Cheers, was just showing my friend some vids on the game the other day!
I’m very impressed by the visuals here. The character models are very simplistic, but the environments are very well detailed, and the shadows everywhere are extremely impressive for PS2.
I remember this, not the game I didn’t know existed, but I do remember a short video series for both male and female version of the characters. It was like a POV thing with small little episodes. I loved and watch them both repeatedly. I had no idea there was a game. This is like a flashback to the past. I’m so happy you made this.
I was literally just thinking about this game the other day, shame it never released in the states, would have loved this game. Thanks for covering it, keep up the great stuff!

Man, even though I’ve never seen or heard of this show/game until watching this video, it instantly gives me nostalgia from the early 2000s. The graphics, gameplay, and writing just invoke memories from those simpler days. 😢
I'm definitely watching the show after this video! It looks so fun! Also, I can't get over Judgement Boy screaming "JUDGEMENT!" Idk why it's so funny to me-
The show is a real treat. I was introduced to Gregory Horror Show many years ago on some let's play channel and was charmed by the weird setting and funny characters. I hope there will be more to come.
Man this game is such a trip, no matter how many times I see others experience it or explain about it. I always loved the character designs, quirkyness, spooky atmosphere and the strange messages the game had. I watched the fmv anime a few years back and it was very good. I wish them the best luck with the kickstarter, as I'd absolutely adore another game, even if its a 2d roguelite. Awesome video covering it and glad i'm not the only one who felt like they wanted to do more with the game than they actually did.
I watched my friend stream this for a few days (until she finished it). Fun memories. The thing that I'll always remember from this game is Roulette boy's "Here' s a present for ya!" but her game was a bit jank, so he repeats the last bit of his voiceline; so we always hear "Here's a present for ya- for ya!".
Since this video won't leave me alone I should use this as an opportunity to mention the creator is relaunching the Kickstarter for the English translation of Gregory Horror Show: Soul of Roses (the game).
Hi fellow Gregory Horror Show fan here and I really liked your review of this game and enjoyed your video! I'm always happy to see more GHS fans out there this show/game has inspired me a lot I make Gregory Horror Show styled Cardboard Crafts/Art even up to this day also I appreciate you boosting the GHS Kickstarter hopefully it goes well so we can have more Gregory Horror Show
Jeez, I remember catching a Let's Play of this game back in the primordial days of UA-cam. I think it was someone like cloud8745 or something close to that? Really surprisingly impactful, I still quote this game. Any time I gamble on RNG in a game or have to rely on a lucky draw in a card game, I always say, "Which will it be, money or love? Judgment!!!" I always wanted to play this game, but I play all my PS2 games on OG hardware and no US release makes that hard for me. I'll emulate it one day.
I still consider Cloud8745 an important figure in the evolution of Video Game LP videos, and I found he was funny and entertaining. It's always cool to hear about another person who remembers his stuff.
Though i knew the title was clickbait, I didnt care because I was happy someone was talking about this. Someone mentioned the show in passing in a video I watched years ago and I became super interested in it. I watched what episodes I could find(spouting Judgement Boy's catchphrase from time to time) and tried watching gameplay videos. Eventually my interest faded and i moved on but never forgot about it. Glad this video exists, really enjoyed it! Your love for the series really shines through, thanks for sharing! A bit sad I missed the kickstarter but super happy it far surpassed its goal.
I did hear about it dawg. Meet with this franchise due to Mysterious Mr Enter review of Gregory Horrow Show anime and then I eventually found the show and watched it and then this game.
I remember seeing the full series on UA-cam a few years back, it’s super well done and honestly I do wish it got more of a following. So it was quite the surprise to see someone years later do a full retroscape of the game. Seems that clickbait title got enough attention for the algorithm to notice
This game along with carnevil are some of my favorite obscure spooky games. it's funny how I found GHS to begin with, I learned about it through "Pecola" a Japanese-Canadian TV show I watched as a kid. They share the same Creator and a similar blocky character designs!
Actually found out about this back when Newtype USA was still in print in the early 2000s- the anime demo discs included an episode of the Gregory Horror Show; the game later came after. Definitely suggest checking out both.
Pity the crowd funding for that localization didn’t make it... Hopefully the fans will do something about it After all, if the three art gallery became found subbed after being lost media, no way are fans gonna accept not learning the game's story
Wow, it never came to the US? Wow. I didn't realize. I had a friend in college who got all kinds of weird/imports back in the day and I played a lot of cool stuff because of them. I didn't know this was an import. We just hung out, they brought the games, I brought the food. Also introduced me to some interesting stuff like Okage: Shadow King, Shadow Hearts and... Stretch Panic. They were cool AF.
@@bootstrapphoenix6456 And now a fellow Okage fan has found you. I technically got introduced to it through A Hat In Time (the Snatcher and Evil King Stan look somewhat similar, and I had found it in the drawer where we keep the Playstation games while looking for some other PS2 game). Too bad my original copy was damaged, but I was able to get another copy to play the game.
@@Mosblinker same actually! But I never played the ps2 version, i played the ps4 version. Plus I found okage through tumblr way back when via that one snatcher blog that made the headcanon that stan is snatchers dad lol
I have taken an interest in the game from whatching this video. Before, a couple youtubers I follow played the first night in a random video, but never continued playing, so I was curious about it. It's so cool to see all of It and learning that it was an anime
i actually almost missed this video because of the clickbait title.. i kept being like. um ive been into gregory horror show for ages -_-.. but when my anti-clickbait addon kicked on and changed the title and thumbnail on PC i finally went aahhh fine ill go for it. glad i did, i really enjoy your style of coverage and it was nice to revisit the hotel. and learn about the kickstarter!! new sub, easy
I actually have an original physical copy of this game which used to be my neighbour's, we used to take turns playing this when we were kids, then a few years ago he gave me his copy along with a bunch of other games he decided to leave in my case as he was moving out of his childhood home.
So happy i found this video. I've been a huge fan of the show for years now and it was awesome to hear that it's been kept somewhat alive over the years
I'm glad more people are exposed to this game. I own it and find it endlessly charming. I think the art style and mood really holds up, I'm surprised that after all these years nothing else has been done with that franchise outside of a fanmade web comic.
Actually there's a sequel to the game AND at least three different animated series (of shorts) with the final one focusing on Catherine. The first series is basically just a retelling of the plot of the first game.
I was first introduced to this game's source material through someone on YT long ago. Later Seeing Capcom being licensed to make it into something in the vein of Clocktower was a good fit.
I remember watching the show online in October a few years ago, it was quite a fun watch, and I usually don't see horror related content that much. I do hope the Kickstarter for a localization goes well. More people should be introduced to this wonderful series.
I've been looking for this game for literally more than a decade! I watched something of it when I younger and couldn't remember anything of the plot, honestly thought that it was a show. All I remembered was the visual style and that it was very weird. Thank you for helping me find it again!
I love Gregory Horror Show ❤ I think I'd be too anxious to play the game, I lose my mind when getting chased. Thanks for showing this off for those of us who can't play!
I think it was middle school when i found this game but i remember being immediately invested because the art style was the same as that one Qubo show Pecola. Ive never played but ive always wanted to and im glad someone is talking about it. I hardly see anyone talk about this
The algorythm pushed me here, and i'm impressed. I do like your take on this and i'll go through some more of your videos, gotta say hearing you have adhd and seeing your gameplay made more sense, because it's how i would play and I have adhd.
Awesome video! I love the brief pauses throughout the video, it made progressing through a single sitting easy and gave me room to imagine my feelings to the dark themes throughout the journey
Whooo Gregory horror show mentioned!! Commenting to help the algorithm !! I never actually played it but watched a many hour long playthrough back in highschool and hunted down all the DVDs! (Even my OC Ashton has a small nod to nekoZombie)
Gregory Horror Show is such an underrated gem! This has been an enjoyable watch so far, thank you for making this video and bringing attention to it here in 2024 :D
Not sure if someone told you this yet, but the female player model is based off of Claire redfield's re2 design if memory serves me right Edit: okay it looks somewhat like her, but it appears I mistook the flower shirt for a red jacket
I remember getting a DVD of a bit of the show this was based on after seeing a playthrough of the game. It's an interesting show and had a unique vibe to it. Very surreal
I think the reason why this judgement boy is different canonically is that (the real) jb gold isn't around to help with rehearsals, and this is one of the new guys. If you remember in season 2, the protag walks in on a judgement boy rehearsal. Also, the money or love thing is kinda lost on the judgement boy encounter in season 3 so... I dont think it matters? I think its simply a lie detector at this point...
Had this show up on recommended and I'm glad! I rememeber seeing someone play this long ago and it just stuck with me since in a good way. The additional things I didnt know were made/are being made for this was a bonus treat to hear. This video was a great listen throughout my day. ^^
I think I watched somebody do this as a noncommentated lets play a long long time ago. I just so happened to be thinking about this game when it was recommended to me.
The game pushes you toward Hell Chef because its a trick. The moment you mess up his cooking his AI permanently changes to haunt you. That' s why he was showing up outside your room constantly. You are meant to leave him until dead last, because if you do that, he will stay in the kitchen instead of the hallways.

4:22 I didn’t know they put Joel into this game! (Vargskelethor)
I remember watching the episodes as a little kid! Love finally getting to learn more about it
I remember seeing the full series on UA-cam a few years back, it’s super well done and honestly I do wish it got more of a following.
I remember seeing cutscenes from this game years ago it has a unique kid friendly horror charm to it.
Actually found out about this back when Newtype USA was still in print in the early 2000s- the anime demo discs included an episode of the Gregory Horror Show; the game later came after. Definitely suggest checking out both.
I’ve never played this game, but I heard it’s such an underrated gem.
The art style kinda reminds me of a blocky, darker animal crossing.
Pity the crowd funding for that localization didn’t make it...
Hopefully the fans will do something about it
After all, if the three art gallery became found subbed after being lost media, no way are fans gonna accept not learning the game's story
Holy shit a fellow okage fan? I keep finding more lately.
Okage: Shadow King is one I really want to play but haven't gotten around to yet. Future video maybe?
I remember coming home from school one day scrolling through youtube and found a playthrough on it and instantly fell inlove with it.
Thank you for giving it a chance. I'm glad you enjoyed it :)
I actually have an original physical copy of this game which used to be my neighbour's, we used to take turns playing this when we were kids, then a few years ago he gave me his copy along with a bunch of other games he decided to leave in my case as he was moving out of his childhood home.
I love your honesty at the beginning of the video. Thank you!
Hopefully the kickstarter is a success. I'd love another game.
Actually there's a sequel to the game AND at least three different animated series (of shorts) with the final one focusing on Catherine. The first series is basically just a retelling of the plot of the first game.
TBH I wasn't thinking "What are you doing" I was thinking "How do you even get Cactus Gunman's soul tho"
Its a shame they never remastered this for 3ds, would make a perfect 3ds game
4:55 well, I'm sure he has many bodies laying around
I've been looking for this game for literally more than a decade! I watched something of it when I younger and couldn't remember anything of the plot, honestly thought that it was a show. All I remembered was the visual style and that it was very weird. Thank you for helping me find it again!
I love Gregory Horror Show ❤
I think I'd be too anxious to play the game, I lose my mind when getting chased.
Thank you so much. I know long videos aren't the easiest to get through so that means a lot.
Thank you so much for doing a review on GHS, it’s crazy to see someone playing it even in 2024!
I have only seen this one other time fron "Krinx" and I absolutely love this. Thank you for bringing media like this here and sharing it with us!
I watched cloud8745 play this back in the goldenage of youtube, thank you for this amazing memory!
Whooo Gregory horror show mentioned!! Commenting to help the algorithm !!
I never actually played it but watched a many hour long playthrough back in highschool and hunted down all the DVDs! (Even my OC Ashton has a small nod to nekoZombie)
It's a crying shame that games like these fall under the category of; If you know, you know.
Thank you for this video.
Oh one more thing, the english voice actor of Judghment boy from the anime is returning as confirmed by the creator!
I love the fact that I was first introduced to Gregory’s Horror Show after playing a short horror dating simulator
what horror dating simulator was it?
@@ranchustars3050 Picture perfect boyfriend
Gregory Horror Show is such an underrated gem!
This has been an enjoyable watch so far, thank you for making this video and bringing attention to it here in 2024 :D
Not sure if someone told you this yet, but the female player model is based off of Claire redfield's re2 design if memory serves me right
Edit: okay it looks somewhat like her, but it appears I mistook the flower shirt for a red jacket
Well, the clickbait title worked, I got your video recommended. And I'm glad! You got a new sub :)
That Pecola art style is something I haven't seen in years.
I remember getting a DVD of a bit of the show this was based on after seeing a playthrough of the game. It's an interesting show and had a unique vibe to it. Very surreal
Was not expecting that ending! Thanks for sharing such a gem and just a great video in general!
I got recommented judgement boy clips 1 week ago idk why, so that's where I found out about this game
Gregory horror!! Judgement boy randomly invades my head sometimes lol
Haha, you and me both!
Had this show up on recommended and I'm glad! I rememeber seeing someone play this long ago and it just stuck with me since in a good way. The additional things I didnt know were made/are being made for this was a bonus treat to hear. This video was a great listen throughout my day. ^^
I never knew any of this ever existed and I aboslutely adore the look of it, thank you for this video
I think I watched somebody do this as a noncommentated lets play a long long time ago. I just so happened to be thinking about this game when it was recommended to me.
I hope you enjoyed it :)
Tbh, wasn't there a vinesauce gameplay of it?
The art style is frying my brain because this visual style was from a kids show i used to watch called pecola
We need a remaster + a next-gen remake of this game if you hear me Sony and Capcom, you have a gem in your hands and you don't know it
This art style reminds me of the Qubo cartoon called Pecola
Oh my friend LOVES Gregory Horror Show, he introduced me to it on UA-cam! Definitely sending this his way! :D
By far most underrated franchise. A true definition of a hidden gem
I had never heard of this series before but I'm in love with it now--- thank you!
7:32 The Swedish Reaper comes for your soul and he talks to you like Vinesauce Joel exaggerating his own accent 😂
Joel vinesauce is how I learned about this game. I've been obsessed ever since.
Judgement boy is my favorite
