Was there ever a more beautiful man than Jeremy Brett, and did he ever look more wonderful than he did in this first scene? Not to mention the fact that he was such a marvelous actor. Thanks for sharing this with the world.
mesmerizing. thank you so much. I keep watching it. no need for fancy computer animation and action films. just brilliant acting and writing. thank you so much
Kirsten I. Russell Debussy was composing during a time when the popular music scene was rebelling against crazy, complex German symphonies. Debussy and his contemporaries wanted to write music that had gentle repetition and could be enjoyed on one instrument (such as the piano) Seems to be an appropriate, symbolic contrast between the 2 Mrs. De Winters
Jeremy Brett, one of the best Mp. de Winter. Very talented actor and exciting plays. I still really like Sherlock Holmes in his performance and his other roles.
I remember watching this on Sunday afternoons on PBS. I was in high school and while all the other guys dreamed of Camaros and Trans Ams and Mustangs, I dreamed of Bentleys and Bugattis and Hispano-Suizas, thanks to all these BBC programs set in the 20s and 30s!
The opening theme music is devastatingly beautiful and sad. I love this version of this story. I cherish the book as Im lucky to have a first press hard bound copy.
@newjackfan I cant believe this is Jeremy Brett! I have seen him in all Sherlock episodes, and he looks completely different. He was a very handsome man.
Thank you so much for sharing this with us on here. It is so lovely to see this again. I've read the book a thousand times and this is so reminiscent of the book.
I most admit this version explains and goes more into details of what is felt by Maxim other than his irascible attitude displayed in the Hitchcock version.
I think he really fell in love with her at the cliff. The last time he was there, Rebecca first asserted her wicked self. Now back, he realizes he's with a woman who cares about his feelings and safety
@newjackfan My God, My God! I cannot agree more wholeheartedly....Gorgeous is an absolute understatement in trying to describe Jeremy, especially in this film. He was the living expample of God's best work. He was off the charts in every way. Sexy. And yes, all of this on top of the fact that he was an extraordinary actor. *sighs*
The Hitchcock film actually couldn't stay true the ending of the book because of the production code of the time. It was called the Hayes code. In the 1940's version if it was stated that Maxim was at fault for Rebecca's death then he would have to be punished for it. It was the way the code worked, and that's why some of the film was changed, the code was a main driving force of film making in that time period.
secretvampiregirl101 there were a few other changes too (ex 2nd Mrs. De Winter barely survived the fire) but from an artistic, keep-you-at-the-edge-of-your-seat standpoint, it makes sense
I presume this was filmed in Spain, not shore where it's supposed to be. I hope it has only changed a little, it looks like an area I knew years later. JB is still my favourite Sherlock.
@mmedefarge It might have been finished and released that year, but considering how long time it takes to produce a film, let alone a tv-series, I wouldn't think so. I should think they started making this two or three years before 79, writing script, applying for financial support etc.
I think quite the opposite, angeramccluskeytv. The Hitchcock film, good as it was as a film, did not stay true to the book and this, as well as the recent re-make with Emilia Fox [Johanna David's daughter] and Charles Dance did. This is my favourite.
I liked Emilia very much and Charles Dance's acting was OK but he just didnt look like Maxim, who in my opinion should have dark hair, I actually really liked Emilia Fox but Jeremy Brett is my favorite Maxim as he looks more like the character in my opinion.
And Jeremy Brett has a tenderness that is irresistible. The way he lingers over the words, describing the beauty of manderly - he is so passionately sincere. In many scenes with Joanna he is genuinely moved by her sweetness - he gives a comforting sense of being much more protective (physically) than maxim was in other adaptations. Jeremy Brett was an extraordinary man.
@MsSarjen She must have been a prominent figure even before her election to PM, this "Iron Lady". The resemblance is quite uncanny. As soon as I saw the character, I thought "Maggie Thatcher". Even the character's personality fits.
I think that the young lady in this movie is pretty and fits this movie but i have to say that the hats they had her wear were not very becoming on her. They didn't flatter her youth at all, she looked older to me. I liked Emelia Foxx in the 1997 version, she looked very cute in a hat. Personally, I was jealous, i don't think I look good in one of those hats.

I agree!
Jeremy Brett showed Max's cold, selfish, yet vulnerable side...I miss you, Mr. Jeremy Brett!!!
Jeremy Brett and Joanna David are perfect for their roles!
I could watch this version again and again, it’s perfection
The most "British" version I've watched. Wonderful actors! Thank you!
Such a wonderful actor,Jeremy,was...such a great variety of rolls...but the deep sadness in his beautiful eyes never seemed to leave...
mesmerizing. thank you so much. I keep watching it. no need for fancy computer animation and action films. just brilliant acting and writing. thank you so much
Debussy is the right music for this story--wistfully romantic and subtly mysterious.

She's just adorable, and Jeremy Brett is so dashing and charming in this, I'm madly in love!
"You should never pick wild flowers, you should always leave them where they belong."
Jeremy Brett, one of the best Mp. de Winter. Very talented actor and exciting plays. I still really like Sherlock Holmes in his performance and his other roles.
Jeremy Brett is excellent.
3:37 The way he throws the newspaper back when he sees her coming, so cute! Thanks so much for uploading this film!
Good Lord. Jeremy Brett's voice is so unbelievably sexy in this film. I can't even deal with it.
Man, I miss him. :(
“That’s because I’m young and not much as happened to me...except people dying” such a relatable quote 😂
I feel Mr Brett has done the best portrait of Mr DeWinter, much more revealing, especially the dark side of his personality.
I love the way he says, ‘the scent is too strong for the bottle’.

Beautiful story! Wonderful cast. I do hope everyone has seen the original with Laurence Olivier and Joan Fontaine. That, too, was a masterpiece.
The opening theme music is devastatingly beautiful and sad. I love this version of this story. I cherish the book as Im lucky to have a first press hard bound copy.
Jeremy Brett ,is Mr de winter!!!!!!!
@newjackfan I cant believe this is Jeremy Brett! I have seen him in all Sherlock episodes, and he looks completely different. He was a very handsome man.
Ah the divine Jeremy
This is so thrilling to see and surely much the best version by far. Thank you, thank yu!
Thank you so much for sharing this with us on here.
It is so lovely to see this again. I've read the book a thousand times and this is so reminiscent of the book.
i love the way he describes the grounds at Manderley
What a charming guy.

Definitely agree. Jeremy Brett is extraordinary in this.

Nice car...LOVELY driver!
And he could sing too!
That voice…Jeremy…sends you into heaven.

3:18 the music reminds me of the theme song for Jeeves and Wooster :), great film, thanks so much for uploading!
"I wish I were 36 dressed in black satin and a string of pearls"
I read pearls as penis and I was confused for a moment 😂😂😂
Perfect🏵🏵🏵🌹♥♥♥🤗love from greecel too good tv series i adore rebecca
i love how they're playing debussy:)

In the story it is supposed to be Monte Carlo😌

This film was made the same year Thatcher was elected to Prime Minister - 1979. I don't think that it is a coincidence.
I think quite the opposite, angeramccluskeytv. The Hitchcock film, good as it was as a film, did not stay true to the book and this, as well as the recent re-make with Emilia Fox [Johanna David's daughter] and Charles Dance did.
This is my favourite.
I hated Emilia Fox and Charles Dance as the principals This version is faithful to the original.
Linda Watkin I see strengths in all the versions
I liked Emilia very much and Charles Dance's acting was OK but he just didnt look like Maxim, who in my opinion should have dark hair, I actually really liked Emilia Fox but Jeremy Brett is my favorite Maxim as he looks more like the character in my opinion.
Of course I can see why this adaptation is favored, it is because it has the moment with the grandmother and the others don't.
I think it's less creepy than the Hitchcock version and more true to the melancholic feel DuMarier intende, I believe

Loved Charles Dance as Max de Winter.
I was thinking he looked like Pierce Brosnan.
First Last I see what you're saying
Van Hopper looks like Margaret Thatcher
I know its like there's my girlfriend!
I prefer Olivier's performance and Fontaine's naturally. Hasten to add for the television production I preferred Charles Dance and Emilia Fox.
I prefer Fontaine
ommmmm god....this is so awful compared to REBECCA by Hitchcock...no comparison ...PLEASE ...PLEASE SEE THE original
