My mother gave the book to me to read after she read it. I was a kid. This was in the 1960's. And then I saw the movie. For some reason I always remembered this particular scene.
It’s to do with manners and relationship dynamics between children and children, children and adults, and children and themselves. Childhood and measuring generational differences. Also class and southern hospitality.
This has to be a hard moment for Walter. He's probably had one of the best meals of his life, and has to admit that he has to live on game for most of what he can eat. On top of that, Scout's already beaten him up in the schoolyard. And now, he has to deal with Scout taunting him for trying to enjoy something he likely hasn't had before. Most of the time, Scout is one of my favorite characters, but it was a good lesson to learn for her.
I was punished, due to a bad sister and mother, but regardless I was put into a school for troubled youths. I wrote a paper on this book (To Kill A Mockingbird) as well as Lolita. Instead of commenting on my dissertation I was insulted due to the fact that it was about a younger girl with an older guy. Mind you, I was 16 so I was hardly an edge on that kind of topic. I'm happy you found this topic because it was excellent. The book and the movie both were excellent and that's a rare thing to say. Thank you.
