      If we take the example of Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader, then it was the assholish behavior of the council + the Darth Sidious' bait that took Anakin to the Dark Side. He feared Padme's life and because of the stupid restrictions of the Jedi Order he went ahead got lured into the Dark Side, Anakin was a bit of a whiny dude but most of the fault goes to the Jedi Order itself, especially since they were the ones berating Anakin from the beginning.
      So, yeah if a person acknowledges the negative emotions and doesn't let it get it over its head, then its fine. But if the person is a royal asshole, then I can't say much

      Remi Recluse No they don't. Love can lead to just as much pain as it does joy. It's the passion that the Jedi should teach you to control when in love, not to completely abhor love. The Jedi, with their damnable sense of overcaution, would tell anyone that love is something to be avoided. When in reality, love is something that saves you, not condemn you. It saved Darth Vader as well as other Jedi before him from the Dark Side.

      if anything grey Jedi masters (referring to those who followed the light but used the dark as a tool) are actually more powerful and more respectable than regular Jedi masters. This is due to the gray having more control and actually practicing the what the Jedi preach, balance. All of that EU stuff was a jumbled, often contradictory mess. I totally understand Disney flushing it. Now, all novels, comics, etc. are considered canon. Disney makes sure they all jive and don't conflict with other projects.
      That being said, I think Disney and Lucasfilm are very much aware of fandom love of Legend stuff. That's why Thrawn, who'd been thrown out of the canon, is now back in with the "Rebels" TV series. And he's getting a new novel which will be canon.

      And let's face it, the Jedi had become arrogant and worse, complacent. They wouldn't be that unless they were trying to cover up a flaw that they were aware of and genuinely did not know how to deal with it. And what people do not understand, they fear. So instead of dealing with it, they repress it and bury it, hoping it'll go away, much like how the Jedi Order built their Temple on top of a Sith Shrine(!) As we know now, neither approach worked out well for the Jedi. And all because they were afraid. 😒😠😤👎

      I defiantly agree, many see the term "Grey Jedi" and think, wow a character in the middle! cool! In reality though that is just one aspect of what the term means. Grey Jedi is more of a generalization just like the term "Dark Jedi" in universe it basically means not a Jedi but not a dark sider. There are different orders that do practice the light and dark but as you said it's very difficult to do so. Grey Jedi is not actually an order just a name some developed to categorize certain people. I have seen a whole lot of people miss that fact.......

      I dont really get why the "hate" ... If anything I hate how judgmental some Star Wars fans can be if another fan doesn't go with their perceived view of canon. If we look at Jedi who would consider themselves "grey" ... chief among these for me are Revan and the Exile, I wouldn't say that I totally agree with your statement but I can understand your perspective. The difference is the mindset. You are saying that you are either using the dark side or the lightside but for Revan it always felt like he was a good natured person who "used the Force". As Kyle Katarn said "force powers in and of themselves are not good or evil, its how they are used and the mindset behind them". Using Force Lightning doesn't have to condemn a persons soul to eternal damnation, the Jedi Order of the Clone Wars era were just too damn judgmental. Using the force for nefarious purposes will always draw a person onto the Dark Path, but using an ability that is considered "darker" for a noble purpose doesn't make you a Sith either. This is one of the chief reasons why I consider Lukes Jedi Order completely superior to the old one. Luke was smart enough to realize that one has to come to peace with the fact that they are sentient beings and thus flawed, and thus have a dark side. There is no escaping it. You can either accept it and learn to work with it, or deny it and forever be controlled by it.

    • @AkaRedFallen

      It's funny, I think back to some stories, especially in the "Old Republic" video game. Some of those stories let you start out as a Sith, but make Light Side choices, while you don't actually become a Jedi or receive formal recognition is one. You're still a Sith, but embrace aspects of the light, or love which is frowned upon by both orders. Would that make one a "Grey Sith"? I wonder, how much one could find in the Sith code, but looking to other emotions beyond fear, anger and hate? Finding happiness, feeling good about helping others. Empathy, and the need to protect, yet also being mindful of those impulses and channeling them into one's forms.
      I dunno, this is just my musings, but would a "Grey Sith" be possible? Does it exist in the Lore? And moreover, is it strange I find that idea more fitting for myself than say a "Grey" or "Dark" Jedi? ...after all, I only remember the Jedi code with difficulty, while the Sith code I know by heart.

    • @Icipall
      @Icipall 7 років тому +6

      Did you actually read what I said? I never said I hate the Grey Jedi or that it is impossible to use both light and dark abilities. I said that I hate the fact that many in the fandom consider the Grey Jedi to be some kind of perfect Force user who can use both dark and light with no effort or problems, that every Force user should be like them and that it is possible for every Force user to be like that and that they, somehow, are morally superior to all other Force users. They want to paint the Grey Jedi as Mary Sues.
      On other news, I do agree that Luke's Jedi Order is better than the old one.

      I can assure you they both exist. The only thing you succeed in by being a grey Jedi is becoming apathetic. An existence without light or dark, without life or death...
      And in the words of Kreia, "So you will do nothing? Apathy is death, worse than death, because at least a rotting corpse feeds the beasts and insects."
      That being said, you aren't wrong. Both the Jedi and Sith are wrong. The real answer to saving the galaxy, to UNDERSTANDING the Force is so simple most can't see it...

      LightAndDarkMdness02 Apathy is not the inevitable result of embracing both sides of the Force. Kreia was wrong.
      Balance is not about inaction but harmony; A dynamic (not static) but unstable equilibrium. This can also be seen in Nature as is mentioned in TLJ, which gave us an insightful, philosophical treatment of the Force, such as we haven't seen since TESB. Life & Death, Peace & Violence, Beauty & Ugliness, Cooperation & Competition. All these opposites, and many more, co-exist in Nature, hence they are all part of the Force.

    What about Luke? From his trench run in NH to defeating Vader in ROTJ, he uses emotion as a tool. When Yoda says he will fall for the dark side if he doesn't complete his training, Luke leaves in order to save his friends(emotion and attactment). He even wears black in ROTJ.
    Luke defeats the Sith by showing mercy to Vader and not going all the way. In the end, Luke and Vader/Anakin bring balance to the force by being neither fully light or dark. Luke has a robotic hand and one biological hand, symbolizing both sides of force. I would say Vader doesn't become Anakin again until his mask is removed.
    So Luke is definitely a gray Jedi. I think Count Dooku is my favorite though, and I think he is a gray Jedi. If Obi-Wan had joined him or if Qui Gon hadn't died, episodes 3-6 would have never taken place.

He was not an Individualist who shunned the needs of the group, or acted out rebelliously when he didn't get his way.

      "But Qui Gon was a confident and assertive person, and so was able to be true to his own values and the order he served."
      That's exactly the point. He served the Jedi Council it was because he believed in the same ideals as they do, not because he believed in their authority. He would never put the needs of the Order or the Council above the needs of the galaxy.
      I think that's the most distinct feature of Qui-Gon's philosophy: The Council wants the Jedi to be loyal to the Order and the Council. Obi Wan values loyalty to his friends and allies. Qui-Gon does never act out of loyalty alone because he knows that loyalty is attachment - one that he accepts as inevitable but also tries to minimize.
      As an anarchist Qui-Gon refuses to force his will on others and refuses to let others force their will on him.

It could take more damage, increasing a commando's chances for survival. Also, we don't really see how close Gregor was to the explosion, so it stands to reason that if he was caught in the explosion, he was not caught in deep enough to die. However, given his mental state in Rebels, I think it's safe to say that the explosion still did a number on him, but not enough to damage his ability as a marksman.

At the end of the Clone Wars, he removed the chip in his brain (as did Rex and Wolffe). The three then ran off to Seelos where they lived in an old modified AT-TE. Either due to the Rhydonium explosion or because of something that went wrong with the chip removal, Gregor suffered from mental issues.

    My own views of being a Grey is through understanding and accepting of oneself. To know that at times you will be emotional, make mistakes, and that a part of you that you never knew was there can come out. To face these things, to accept them, and then understand them. So you may learn to control and deal with them when these times will come. This is how you may better yourself then those around you. Balance comes from understanding and acceptance of the unknown, of fear, of what's within.

    Okay, so the main difference between Jedi and Sith is that Jedi listen to the will of the force and follow it, and the Sith bend the force to their own will.
    But, how can the Jedi say that they follow the will of the force if the force itself has a light and a dark side, but they refuse to use the dark side?

    • @adventurethroughtime
      @adventurethroughtime 7 років тому +13

      Because they fear losing themselves to it. The Jedi do follow the will of the force, but do not allow themselves to be enslaved by it; like the Sith.
      I completely understand what you mean, and that is a damn good question.

    • @cunjoz
      @cunjoz 7 років тому +4

      But the one who follows the will of another is already a slave to him, and that doesn't have to be bad.
      If the force decides to manifest it's darkness more at a certain time they should follow that. Later, the force will manifest the light more and they will follow that, losing themselves to the force alone, not regarding the aspects of it.

    • @adventurethroughtime
      @adventurethroughtime 7 років тому +3

      But the thing is, no matter how the Force "manifests" itself in any given Era; there is always a presence of both sides. The Jedi have always thought of the Dark Side as being strictly evil (which it isn't) and the Light Side as strictly good (which it isn't); so they in turn always struggle to bring about the Light Side because it is what they perceive as being "Good" and therefore the "Will" of the Force as a whole.
      The way I see it, you can "Follow" something/someone's will without being it's/their slave; succumbing to something/someone's will is when you become it's/their slave.

    • @cunjoz
      @cunjoz 7 років тому +6

      Well then they "follow" their own perception of the force and not the will of the force itself which means that they too bend the force to their own will.

    • @josephjohnson8212
      @josephjohnson8212 7 років тому +5

      I would argue that the "dark side" is a perversion of the Force, driven and twisted by negative emotions. "Using the Dark Side" means to use the Force selfishly, actively ignoring it's will. So what I'm saying is, the Force never "wills" for anything Dark to happen, because it HAS no darkness in it, except for evil beings that put it there. Does that make sense?

The Jedi tend to think their way is the only way, I see the Grey Jedi as the ones that are truly one with the force since the force isn't in its raw form dark or light like magic the intent of its use is what gives it its color. As long as the intention is neutral I would say one can be balanced in both sides and not narrow viewed and minded as the light and dark can be.

    I came to understand the ‘light’ side as the intention to manifest the will of the force, whereas the ‘dark’ side the effort to channel it onto one’s aspirations. In that sense, the Jedi order did stray from the will of the force, being enforcers of the Republic. That also created dissonances within its members, with many straying off (e.g. Ashoka) and being called “gray”.

    If I was in this universe, had a strong connection to the Force and was choosing my way, I'd definetely be seeking ultimate power by being both invincible in a combat against any creature and cheating death at any age. This makes me close to Plagueis, except I'd focus on myself rather than others. For this very reason I wouldn't search for shortcuts and succumb to the dark side completely, or to even join siths who were most of the times greater menace to each other than the jedi were to them. I'd probably form my own group and doctrine, gather everyone who I deem loyal but have failsaves against them all the time. In it, fully and forever succumbing to any extreme of the light or the dark would be forbidden, and the ability of the apprenticies to return back to the balance after a temporary submersion into such extreme would be crucial for their value in it. As until everything is certain, there are no easy answers located at the extremes which can affect your judgement. Basically, this would be an ultimate form of jedi in a way that they seek absolute control, only my way would be providing even more control by teaching the user how to lose control temporarily, use extremes to your advantage, and then come back to balance and control. This would have been my quest pursued by all means necessary. Sith despise light, jedi despise darkness, ultimately limiting their perspective. Only in absolute flexibility, super-conductivity is there a way to absolute knowledge and power, and that's not a quick way.

Out of interest, how would people like Galen Marek and Revan be described? Neither were Grey Jedi I think, but they were neither Sith nor Jedi, as they kept changing their allegiances. Would be interesting to hear your thoughts on this.
    I think if it were me, I would definitely be a Grey Jedi. I could never conform to the Jedi Code in its entirety. However, I could possibly be more of a Dark Side user as well. Great fun thinking about all this

    The Sith speed to get to their destination with no regard how badly they drive.
    The Jedi travel too slow, arriving at their destination often too late but are nice upon arrival.
    The Grey drive within the limits and have proper vehicle maintenance.

    Mace Windu would be one too, wouldn’t he? As he was able to harness the dark side without falling to it.
    And it seems like Anakin, had he not fallen to the dark side completely, could’ve achieved balance in the Force by placing himself between light and dark.
    After the last movie, I’d say Rey is probably close to being something of a grey Jedi herself too. There’s dark in her, and she’s fully able to command and harness it, but she refuses to be consumed by it. Perhaps her new order will aim for balance? Neither exclusively light nor dark.

    I would say the grey Jedi are those whom found balance in the force but lean towards the light, and grey Sith whom also found balance but lean towards the darkness. The grey side of the force is letting all of your emotions flow, unlike the Jedi; but not letting them consume you, unlike the sith. The grey are individuals not an order. They forge their own paths because to them their is no only light or dark, Jedi or Sith. To them, there is only the force.

    perfectly explain, and If I were a force user this is what way of life I would follow, being that I believe the Jedi code often times makes Jedi's weak against the dark side and sith, and me not wanting to be fully sith because of the rule of two and the arrogance that comes with the sith, so the Greg Jedi code would be perfectly suited for me as a force user....✌

    Jedi only use the light side of the Force.
    Grey Jedi mostly use the light side of the Force and use a little of the dark side of the Force.
    Dark Jedi mostly use the dark side of the Force and use a little of the light side of the Force.
    Sith Lords only use the dark side of the Force.
    I personally believe that the Grey Jedi are the ones who trully bring balance to the Force.

    In the first Star Wars role playing game I played a young person who received some training from a Jedi hiding from the Empire that died allowing the young one to flee when they were discovered. He was unruly and brooding and soon became a student to a dark side teacher. Quickly finding the darkside untenable. Forced by the need to survive he used both till he came to terms with the knowledge that while you do what you must it is how you do it that matters. At that point I called him a Grey Jedi. This was the late 80's. So I Love the concept! Jolie from Knights of the Old Republic was like this.

    Back years ago (jesus christ, 2004) in an old D20 Star Wars game I played with friends, my Jedi Guardian being "gray" cause a great deal of conflict that was fun to play through. Pointing out that he was an emotionally stable adult and trained professional paid bigger dividends and made a more capable and stable Force User than an emotional eunuch cleaving fanatically to a code of peace based entirely on fear.
    The DM loved it. It was essentially a classic clash between eastern and western philosophies. By the end of the campaign he was Soldier 4/Commando 3/Jedi Guardian 11. I often used his background in "been there (far more often than he'd like), done that (enough that it's just annoying now) and has SO MANY t-shits" to no sell all the *give in to your anger* the Sith kept spouting. I miss that game. The pure hilarity was great.

      That's a good point, because there's so much ambiguity on what will happen to Ezra and Kanan during A New Hope. I feel like Ezra is trying to become a Grey Jedi like Ahsoka in season 3, partially because he doesn't want her death to be in vain and he believes it's the only way to understand the Sith and everyone who uses the Dark Side.

    If I could add a story to the canon, it would involve a unique Jedi master who would in some ways qualify as a grey jedi. He would have in place tests that require practicing the tenets of the light to pass, and would use them to have himself tested before he could be allowed to exit a place of isolation. In the place of isolation, he would surrender completely to the dark side, and then return himself to the light before he could rejoin the outside world. This would endow him with insight into the dark side and the Sith, as well as experience and practice with rehabilitation from the dark side. He would be the ideal jedi to hunt, capture, and convert sith to the light.
    The key to his rehabilitation back to the light would not be clear to him initially, but in time he would realize that forgiveness is the gateway -- both forgiveness of others and of oneself. The Sith would declare his works heretical and seek to destroy them not by killing him or destroying his chamber, but by influencing him such that his conversion back to the light would eventually fail during one of his exercises. Their goal would be to prove that eventually the dark side wins. And, in the end of the story, I would have it turn out that they are right.
    After a sith kills this jedi's apprentice, he would fake rehabilitation to use the dark side for revenge, and then he would turn sith for good. The moral being that even forgiveness can not overcome continued indulgence in temptation, because one can not forgive an act that is not yet part of the past. Were I endowed with the permissions to author this story, then I would have this jedi as the reason why the Council does not tolerate or condone the grey. After his permanent conversion to Sith, he would hunt jedi not to kill them, but to inspire in them doubt that they are indeed good. One by one, he would show them that the dark side is a part of them, and they would fall to the dark side, get hunted by the Jedi Order, and one by one they would be killed by their own allies.
    He would, however, never become a master Sith. His ultimate, cruel fate would be that one day, without intending to, he would cause someone he cares deeply for to fall and die at the hands of the Jedi Order. He would retire to seclusion and never forgive himself, living out his last years in a self-imposed hell, his teachings utterly defeated by that point. His ultimate failure would spur the Jedi Order to extinguish any aspect of the dark side in themselves, while helping each other to forgive and overcome their mistakes.
    As such, this would be a short term victory for the Sith; the ultimate proof that the dark side is stronger. But in the long term, thinking grander scale than one lost Jedi master, it would be a Pyrrhic victory. This would make it far more difficult to turn a Jedi to the dark side, while his teachings far from being lost in truth, would still provide the basis to redeem sith back to the light.
    I know I could write this story and handle it very well because, to me, this is the one story not in the canon that would practically write itself. But, to be honest, when you know that you'd be incredibly good at a task, never do it for free. Since I have neither the connections for a contract nor the time to develop them, this story will never be written as more than a synopsis. Though maybe someone will produce a watered-down version after reading this comment.
