    I’m 36, and I got Sirius radio back in 2003, when they were still separate companies. Then when Howard Stern came to Sirius in 2006, it really made my day. Since the merger with XM some of the stations I loved were renamed, like channel 27 Deep Tracks, used to be a Sirius 16 The Vault. I listen to SiriusXM more than any other music source.

    Helping my Dad, setting this up. He has Sirius years ago, and, as you said, he finally was offered the $99/3-year deal. Trouble was: to swap to another car, there’s a $15 fee added. Was on the chat line 3 times, refreshing signal, etc, but it still doesn’t work. Also, the special deal only includes a fraction of available channels. What a pain.

    Personally I enjoy Channel 148, Radio Classics. Bob Hope, Jack Benny, Red Skelton, radio dramas, westerns. My SO likes 60's on 6. As for signal drops, hill sides to the south, make it hard to pull signals in.

    My deal-breaker is sound quality, and the lack thereof is SiriusXM's fatal flaw. From what I've read elsewhere they have a very narrow sliver of bandwidth shared by all the streams. The resulting bitrate per channel is vanishingly low and the compression artifacts painfully apparent.

    • @AntennaMan
      @AntennaMan  5 років тому +5

      The sound quality is horrible. It sounds worse than a 64kbps internet stream. They have too many useless channels they do not need.

    When Satellite Radio first launched in 2000 under XM then Sirius it was revolutionary. The programming was excellent, especially on XM. You where hearing music on music channels that was well programmed with music not getting attention by mainstream terrestrial radio with such channels as BBC Radio 1. Music channels had talking personalities and you could call in and request something. You also heard channels from different cultures such as Asia and Latino. When the merger took place the quality went downhill fast. Music channels were removed the music quality went more mainstream terrestrial radio repeated over and over and over again. Personalities were removed. The original programming went downhill. Either removed or replaced with programming you already hear on terrestrial radio.

    • @AntennaMan
      @AntennaMan  5 років тому +1

      I have no idea why they allowed the merger in the first place. The only reason I have Sirius XM is the position I'm in as a GrubHub driver constantly using my phone to navigate. It's not feasible for me to connect and disconnect the phone every time I go in and out of the car. They have one channel that's pretty good (Underground Garage) but even that gets repetitive. There's no reason to play the same song five times a day. The argument for the merger was that it needed to happen in order to keep satellite radio profitable but it now looks like the industry is killing itself.

    • @chrislanejones
      @chrislanejones 5 років тому +1

      @@AntennaMan There are still good channels but I agree with this contributer for several reasons. When the merger happened more dedicated artist channels popped up. Who needs a dedicated Pearl Jam channel. They also canned channels like BBC radio and U-pop citing that Americans are culture adverse like we are some xenophobic assholes even know we are a melting pot country.
      I do believe the merger had to happen for fiscal reasons. The competition from the "Apps" was brutal even when it was just Pandora and Slacker radio days. The marketplace of subscription radio is just too oversaturated for two satellite radio platforms.

      I've been listening to Sirius since 2005 (XM via Directv in 2007.) I was a huge fan of both services back then as they had an extensive library of content and their content used to be commercial free. I love Sirius so much that I got a lifetime subscription from them. Nowadays, the stations are as repetitive as FM radio and most of the channels now have commercials on them! It's basically FM radio at this point.

    • @BradleyBishop
      @BradleyBishop 4 роки тому +3

      Sirius spent too much money on Howard Stern and, at the time, the general thought was, "Oh, After signing Howard ALL radio subscriptions after that were solely due to Howard!" (I wasn't one of them). People thought this, though. XM spent money on other talent. Both businesses spent money to get themselves into serious debt.
      Then they merged. After merging all Lifetime subs went away (If you had one before you were still grandfathered in but they were looking at you to nip and peck away any features you might otherwise enjoy).
      I had both from back when they started and, in the beginning, they were both pretty great. Sound quality was good. No censorship. It was pretty nice. Over time they added more and more channels. They only had so much bandwidth so they had to compress the current channels to add more, and the quality suffered. What you hear now out of a SiriusXM radio (not internet) is something that's better than AM and probably worse than FM. Still, it works everywhere, which is nice.
      Then they merged and basically became the "cable TV" of FM radio. They censor music, have repetitive playlists, and have annoying DJs during weekday mornings on Sirius Hits 1 (Channel 2 - which always makes me laugh). They didn't use to have DJs. It used to be just music and more music.
      Now? They're OK or, maybe, better than OK. They still censor music, which drives me a bit nuts, and they have annoying DJs who suck (the Morning Mashup on SiriusXM Hits 1 (Ch2) suck) but it beats terrestrial radio because terrestrial radio has the same, local, annoying DJs and endless commercials and they still censor music. Probably the best thing about SiriusXM is how you can move from place to place on a long trip and not have to search for new radio stations to listen to OR, if you're more into streaming, generally SiriusXM works everywhere (and you don't have to fuss with your phone and bluetooth). Mobile phone service has made great strides but still isn't everywhere.
      I hate the games that they play with pricing. I think they'd be better off to just say, "It's $12/mo," and then you either take it or leave it. The $15-20/month OR you call in every 6mo-1yr and threaten to cancel to get it to $5/mo is kind of stupid.

    • @mida8261

    I have a SiriusXM subscription and I love it. $8.70 a month is well worth every penny for me. My childhood was the ‘70’s and my teen years were the ‘80’s and SiriusXM brings that all back to me. 80’s on 8, 1st Wave, Classic Rewind, Classic Rock Party, 70’s/80’s Pop, Yacht Rock.....I can’t get enough. I can listen to the original MTV VJ’s and I feel like I have original early 80’s MTV again. It feels so good. So for me, it’s a fantastic service that actually has value for me and brings me a little bit of happiness. The other thing I love is that it’s curated. Not some computer algorithm attempting to play what it thinks I want to hear. SiriusXM reminds me of what radio used to be like when I was growing up. I live in NYC, so I don’t have a car, but if I did, I’d surely subscribe to in car service, knowing I can listen anywhere I drive around the country. P.S. I tune channels with an iPad Mini, and listen via Bluetooth on a Tivoli Model One BT. The Tivoli is connected to a pair of AudioEngine HD6 stereo speakers (which are excellent).

    Great review and great comments pro and con. A pro is radio sports. You can listen to almost any ballgame in a major sport. They’re usually blacked out on I❤ and TuneIn.
    Second pro, is if you have it in your car, you automatically get it in on your phone. There may be a two radio minimum. You can then take it anywhere, with many more channels. As far as sports are concerned, you normally get the home team’s announcers, but with the phone app., the road broadcast is available as well.

    Main reason I subscribed in November 2018 was because it worked seamlessly with the radio in my 2004 silverado. I didn't have to connect a phone and I could control everything from my steering wheel. (Granted my truck wasn't equipped from the factory with an XM module and I had to "jailbreak" a GM factory XM module that I pulled from a junkyard because it was theftlocked, but that's besides the point.) I fell in love with a few channels, mainly 38, 39, 41 and whatever channel lithium was. There are others that I listen to as well. The song line up is cool for the first month, but quickly gets repetitive. Now, I have 3 radios. One for me, my father and my girlfriend. My bill was $53.38. I like not having to sit through 10~ minutes of commercials between songs, but that's a steep price. I think i'll try the cancel subscription trick.

      I myself would like to be part of those who do pay for Sirius xm in their vehicle's, but, for one, I will be at some point moving, and am not sure whether or not if I could immediately pay the bill, and 2nd is that I sort of am having a few issues with having it setup in my car. The latter might be because that I don't have a active subscription, and I may need one to actually get something in the car, so I'm stuck with listening to flipping through stations. Which, honestly, listening to the FM stations are not that bad, I mean, it is true that you are at the mercy of what the fm station DJ's have lined up, which you have to put up with anyway with the Sirius XM service. But, of course, you have to deal with the annoying commercials, but, that's the benefit of having multiple station presets though. But, of course, there does come those points where there is either nothing on or multiple songs you like are on and of course, you can only choose one station.

Caribbean, Mexico also till you get to the equator then will not work.

    First off, I am in Canada so that means we pay higher prices as compared to our US brothers. I think the cost here just sucks. The audio quality is ok at best and that only applies for sometimes. Some stations only seem to have a short list of tunes before they start to repeat. The only one thing I like is the fact that the signal is streaming from orbit so you can drive good distances without fade. The portable units do not seem to be of any high quality and can have a short life span. They don't even come with Bluetooth that I know of. So I have decided to cancel my subscription to Sirus XM radio after all these years of paying over 200 a year. I can just go to streaming music from my phone to my vehicle from now on ....... how very sad it is.

If you want to have a promotion on SiriusXM, first you will be with a customer service representative he or she won’t and can’t give you a promo. You need to tell him or her that you want to cancel the service, CANCEL service, then they will transfer you to another department that it’s not cancelations it’s retentions, in there they will give you your promotion :)

    Sirius XM has decent channels but they dropped some channels for their "single artist" channels. This is dumb programing, you can download one torrent and have the entire Pearl Jam Discography. Pearl Jam does not need a dedicated channel.
    But what put the nail in the coffin for me was the sound quality. The Google Music App sounds better on the lowest quality and so does TuneIn radio. Sirius XM sounds like 128kbs MP3 trash from WinMx or Limewire in 2003.

    I just bought a new car and was offered FREE XM Sirius for a trial period. I REFUSED.. I once had XM Sirus, and the only way you can TERMINATE and END them is to cancel your credit card and get a new one, because Sirus will not stop charging to that card, no matter what you do... I think credit cards should drop Sirus for those business practices.

Fast forward a few weeks, I accidentally hit the radio button on the dash, then all of a sudden satellite was BACK!!! I never re-ordered the service after it got cut off. Now it’s back. Today on Classic Alternative #33 (my favorite) Richard Blade spent 35 seconds to tell us what he is going to play during the next hour, and then he keeps giving updates on sports programming, and that's when I hit either the mute button or head over to the Metal or Hairbands stations. The reason we signed up for SiriusXM was to listen to music, and NOT to hear some guy / gal "TALK!" Gawd, I would replace ALL of them if I could.

    I'm a bit late here. You didn't mention which hardware and service you're using. Sirius and XM use different satellites and totally different bitrates and codecs. I was subscribed to both services when they were fairly new. Even though today it is one service, it is still simulcast to both sets of satellites. I've found XM (found in GM and Toyota and others) to be FAR superior to the Sirius system (found in Ford, Chrysler and others) to sound like complete crap. The compression on the Sirius system is so awful I can't listen to it. Not to mention the signal strength is far inferior to that of the XM system. I still use rental cars now and then, and even today, nothing has changed. XM is the far better choice for hardware and sound quality over Sirius by a long, long shot even though the stations are now simulcast to both satellite systems.

      @@AntennaMan You are correct. And yes, some channels are much, much more compressed than others. But overall, everything is extremely compressed, and yes, they do charge a lot for these services. I'm still behind the times as I have a couple of iPods I rotate in the car as I update my music files on my computer. I've routed the cable into the glove box so I don't even see nor touch it for months on end. Every time I get into the car, it fires up with the stereo and I just hear what I want to hear, and without interruptions. I've collected music my whole life, so I've got a large selection built up on the computer. Good luck with your audio adventures!

      @tempest411 3 роки тому

      In most cases, yes. You need a radio capeable of controlling a sat-radio tuner, and then the sat-radio tuner module itself. A word of caution: if you buy an older, used radio like I did, you have to get a sat-radio tuner that is compatible. The newest sat-radio tuner modules don't work on older sat-radio capeable radios. But none if this stuff is expensive, and it's easy to install.

    Sirius XM is a rip off company in my opinion. You can get a plan for about $6 a month with taxes. Then if you fail to mark your calendar to the day before the expiration to call them to get a new $6 deal, they JACK UP THE RATE to OVER $20 a MONTH. What a clip joint! Imagine any of your monthly utilities going up 3 times all of a sudden!
    This causes very serious LOYALTY problems, and makes them look like crappy people and crappy company. Lets just be honest about it. The MOMENT I get a new car with inter-connectivity to my smart phone, that's the moment I dump this rip off driven company. In fact I am looking for a conversion kit for my work SUV so I can rid myself of this LOYALTY UNETHICAL company.
    Rather than building loyalty, they have destroyed it with GREED only angering the subscriber base.
