    "Pure digital quality" is one of the great sales jobs in tech history. Whether it applies to cell phones, MP3s or satellite radio, it's code for the provider cramming more signals into the same bandwidth or space and sacrificing audio detail in the process. It makes you pay with a signal that often sounds dry and lifeless. There are a few things you can do, however, to "rehydrate" SiriusXM.

    I had one of the very first XM radio receivers. At that time it was true "CD" quality. I had no complaints. Now it sounds like crap. They used to sample at 45000 bps rate now it's like 25000 bps. Sounds like crap. BTW, NO AMOUNT of external audio gear can improve a crap source.

      The ironic part is, the better your car's audio system is the more it highlights the poor audio quality of satellite radio.

    I generally prefer to stream by Bluetooth. But sometimes you find yourself stuck in the middle of nowhere with terrible cell coverage,rendering streaming apps moot. And to each their own, but I like the ability to listen to live sports and news. Sat radio does a pretty good job of this. I wish the quality were a little better, but it’s not like listening through a tin can. Plus, perspective is important. They’re beaming a signal up into space, which your car picks up in real time. They’ve been doing it for quite some time now, but it’s still pretty crazy if you think about it!

    Among "all those channels" there's maybe 6 I like, and they do NOT cover all my favorite genres either. If they dumped all the talk, sports, and Howard (who cares) Stern they could bump the audio quality AND variety of music. But that's just my opinion, and the problem as well. They cram all they can in there in the hopes you'll subscribe. Audio quality takes a hit. "Popular" channels seem to get a higher bitrate than the unpopular ones. Guess which I prefer?

      Bill Blair I can’t tell if you’re joking; if you are I apologize, but I feel it necessary to point out that if your vehicle has satellite radio, then it certainly has the ability to connect to a smartphone via aux or usb. Streaming services like Spotify (even the free version) are just objectively better than Satellite radio. Streaming services offer more variety, don’t go out when you’re under an overpass (a legitimate concern if you live in an urban area), and are SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper.

      If you're gonna listen to SiriusXM, and don't mind paying for cellular data, the SiriusXM app is a superior way to listen. The bitrate for satellite SiriusXM is well under 100 kilobits for most channels. The app goes up to, I believe around 320kbit at its max setting.

    • @elijahwatson8119
      @elijahwatson8119 6 років тому +1

      Yeah, and I've often wondered why SiriusXM didn't work out a deal with one of the cellphone providers to provide XM over LTE in newer radios, and have satellite to fall back on if you went out of the service area. It wouldn't use that much data at say 256kbit/s, so they could probably get a fairly cheap deal with one of the providers, and it would provide a much better service that I *might* be willing to pay for. Plus it would save SiriusXM quite a bit of money in those bigger cities not having to maintain the ground transmitters they use in those environments.

    For the past 15 years, I often hear a lot about XM radio through ads and friends. So, after finding a good used car (a 2003 MPV Mazda in mint condition with 65K original miles on it), I installed a new Kenwood DD head unit with an additional amplifier in the back. I signed up on XM and looked forward for my favorite genre which is chill music or Chillout Lounge. Set aside the quality of the sound, it's the quality of the music that disappointed me. I realize that not many people listen to Chillout but I still think XM could have done better with it. I say this because I've been listening to SOMA FM, a listener supported online radio station for many years and the music they play is qualitatively better that XM's chill music. XM's Chill artists sound like they were hired to play substandard chill music for XM to fill the Chill genre void. In other words, XM Chill music is not real Chill music...it's not like SOMA FM. And if you go on the XM website and search for, say, classical music or Jazz, as soon as you hit enter, XM throws in additional list of genres unrelated to what you were searching for- I hate that.
    Anyway, and as much as I was hoping XM would have a more discriminating taste for music, I'll most likely use up the 3 month trial period and call it a day. I'm better off loading thumb drives and CD's with my music than fiddle around my car radio interface while driving. It makes no sense paying for all that XM has to offer when all I want is about 15% percent of it has to offer. And that 15% leaves a lot to be desired.

    The easiest way to fix Satellite Radio, is don't invest in Satellite Radio. That leaves SXM with two options. Either improve the quality or go under. But, that will never happen because consumers are addicted to everything. Specially when it comes to being entertained. If you package it right. Consumer will purchase a turd, fresh from a butthole and be pleased with it.

    Even good old FM radio sounds much better than XM satellite radio. I use the lossless mode on apple music and the sound quality is so good that my stock radio in my 2015 Camry could not keep up at all because the factory DAC is really struggling to keep up with these sonic nuances not found on MP3s. Put in an aftermarket radio and it improved it a great deal but, now I realize the stock speakers cannot keep up with apple lossless audio even at 16 bit 44.1 kHz. Then my next step is a sony mobile ES speaker and XM GS4 amplifier for my car for that crystal sound.

    I absolutely refuse to pay for satellite radio! I have two cars that are satellite radio capable but just enjoy old-fashioned free radio. When I travel to other cities or other states I simply hit the seek button and find something I like. If I can't I pop in a CD (yes I know CDs are going the way of the dodo bird) If I get tired of my CDs I just stream music from my phone. Sirius has all but pleaded with me to activate an account and I flatly refused. They've even called and offered me packages for as little as $5 a month! I simply reply "That's $5 more than I want to pay. Have a great day." Click

      Shepperd November funny they did the exact same to my brother and then to me. They offered $5 a month (can't remember if that was for a limited time) I said I would give them $5 a year because that's what it's worth to me. I explained to them that the sound quality too low for something that is not free and most channels are complete garbage. The only single benefit is if you find you have left for a road trip and forgot your MP3 player and are out of cell range to stream music.

    For what it’s worth, I had XM in 2006 way before the merger in my 06 Acura TL. The quality was nowhere near the DVD-A I would play in the ES system. However, XM provided a great mix of songs. I typically listened to 5,6,7 and 8 and the country channels. At some time someone decided we all needed someone to talk over the intro and extros of the songs on 5,6,7,8. As a musician, this was frustrating. So now I use Apple Music through car play (in another car) and select shuffle and I’m good to go. And forget broadcast programming. They totally suck.

My 2011 Silverado still has a CD player but my wife's new 2018 Equinox Premier has all the bells and whistles that cost you extra if you have a subscription but we just plug in her smartphone and listen to saved music. Apparently I have an SiriusXM Xtra type unit. The Xtra is for extra bandwidth. This is the first Sirius radio I've been able to listen to, and I've had many vehicles with the service before. Every other radio has sounded overcompressed resulting in me not wanting the service. This is the first vehicle where the sound is good and pretty much on par with streamed radio (I don't think I can tell a difference, not like before where it was easy to pick out satellite radio). Hopefully more new radios come with at least this type of head unit if they want to even try to get folks to subscribe. I'm older and lazy and like just having a good radio service, and drive in plenty of cell sheltered areas of my state where phone streaming isn't always an option.

    I have never experienced SiriusXM, but DAB+ which we have in Europe sounds pretty good to me. Some channels broadcast in 192kbit/s HE-AAC, so it's no wonder it sounds good, but as with SiriusXM, the more channels, the worse audio. Luckily for me, there are only about 20 channels where I live, some of which are talking radio channels that don't require much bandwidth, so the music ones get more.

    • @newwavetheo
      @newwavetheo 6 років тому +1

      Truls Bekk I wish we had DAB+ here in the US. The FCC instead supported a competing tech called HD Radio, but did support DAB initially. The investors of HD Radio convinced the FCC to use that instead. This tech isn't royalty free either, meaning manufacturers have to pay to licence this tech in their radios. It still isn't popular here because of that and regular people just don't care. On top of that, HD Radio is inferior in quality to DAB+ because of the older compression tech that is sent through the air.

    Regarding the comparison with mp3 at the beginning, I should point out that I have 128k mp3s from 1996, and on the whole they STILL sound better than SiriusXM!
    I don't think mp3 is bad, provided it's encoded with the right settings and a good encoder... I'm not gonna argue it's the same as lossless because it's not, but it can be damn close. But SirusXM just needs to go away if they haven't gotten it right yet....
    I got a 3-month trial with a used car I recently bought, and after a week I really can't stand it anymore, it's just grating to the ears and brain. II keep thinking I should call and complain or demand my money back, but that would be silly of course. I had the service with another car a few years ago, and cancelling that was a headache for sure. And the complaints I made about the sound quality were of course met with some ridiculous responses that had nothing to do with the actual issue.
    The sound has such a dull, lifeless, and flat quality to it. It actually seems there is less artifacting (washy cymbals and applause, for example) - but I haven't put my nice aftermarket system in my current car, so perhaps my factory system is muffling the arftifact.
    And what's with the "bloomy" bass??? So many of the channels are so artificially bass heavy (the Beatles channel is one of the worst). The Beatles were pretty middle of the road in terms of bass heaviness for the '60s, so it's just bizarre. It's a very "empty" sounding bass... Just gives a general thump, definitely no defined bass notes or anything.
    When I had aftermarket system installed in my previous car, I have to say abetter system does nothing but further bring out the flaws in the service's quality in a severe way.. Perhaps the programs shown here than can guess and "fill in" the missing audio data are helpful (I haven't heard them), but there's no way that can be an ideal solution.
    The solution: It's freakin' 2019 - the bandwidth to stream decent HD video has been around for years, so audio (which requires a tiny fraction of what video does), should quit getting second-class citizen treaatment. If SiriusXM has an absolutely fixed infrastructure, then they have to cut down their channel offerings - or hell, encode everything in MONO to improve quality. As insane as that is, it would actually sound a lot better (virtually doubling the audio quality at the expense of any stereo imaging).

  • @Chief_5

    My satellite radio sounds great, but the subscription sucks! They need to figure out how to do a flat $100 bucks a year! 🦄 $29.99 a month is just to much. 😬 and having to call to get a better deal every year is a pain in the butt.

  • @layziebone2152
    @layziebone2152 5 років тому

    XM radio uses CT-aac plus codec which allows for a low bit rate high quality stream. The problem is that they want to give as much choice as possible so there's 150 channels. The CT-aac plus codec is pretty good as most content on XM streams at bitrates around 32-40 kbps, some channels such as talk channels are lower than that. While it is a far cry from a 320 kbps MP3 or a lossless codec but for 40 kbps it does quite well -- ever listen to a 40 kbps MP3 file, it's utter crap. That being said there are more updated codecs, the CT-aacPlus codec has updated versions that now include parametric stereo which further stretch the sound quality. SiriusXM's problem is their ability to update the firmware of all the receivers to be able to use a more efficient codec as launching new satellites, coming out with new radios are still pretty expensive.

  • @alexsmba
    @alexsmba 6 років тому

    It just needs new infrastructure. They could do a shared satellite and 5G system, using IP. With no video signal, they should be able to do lossless audio. If they added songs and albums on demand, then they could really dominate the internet radio market also. But that idea makes too much sense.

    Still more reliable signal than cellular data connection. I'm more annoyed by a choppy cellular connection when I'm way out in the country or overoaded towers in the city than I am of the satellite signal lost quickly be a bridge or a few thick trees. Sound quality from xm isn't all that bad. Ya it won't match sound quality of a CD or streaming service like Pandora or an fm station. Worst sound quality I can recall was streaming a music service like choice radio on dialup back in the late 90's.

    I never really had a problem with sound quality with SXM I always thought it sounded just as great as MP3 very crisp. The only problem i have with SXM is sound reliability. Sometimes the signal gets blocked when travelling under bridges and tunnels but most my your driving on the highway and open roads its a joy. And yes, I do have a Used Car lol

      Listen to a cd for a while than switch to XM. It is just not transmitted in a good quality. The lowest of lows are missing and same with the highs. This also may not be noticed with a standard factory stereo. They are not really known for great sound quality.

      Sound quality is a big hit, no comparison. Also, there's no sound drop in metro areas as "sat radio" in these areas actually use a terrestrial repeater, like a regular radio station ,which allows for omnidirectional signal, instead of just straight up.

    • @TheNaresh308
      @TheNaresh308 6 років тому

      Always thought it sounded just as good as my CD's , It may depend on the car stereo system but overall XM sounds phenomenal on my system just as good as a hard copy

      That makes sense, Usually my drive goes into metro areas and It's always reliable the only times it isn't is if I travel under a bridge or inside a building it takes a dump

      TuneIn is trying to compete with its premium service. It's not satellite, of course, so if you travel a lot in areas with poor cellular service, then it won't be for you. And, of course, SiriusXM has a lot of proprietary content you can't get elsewhere. But there are potential alternatives, depending on what you are interested in.

    Just cancel you subscription and they will beg you back for less than half the price. They keep mailing with lower and lower offers. I had it on all six of my cars and cancelled because the price kept going up. Then I realized I never needed that crap in the first place because the music is so crummy. Now I just use Pandora and stream it in all my cars for one low price and I make the play lists. The stuff I like isn’t even on the satellite radio, they just play the same old crap mixed in with some good selections.

    To me it isn't the quality with Sat radio that is the problem, it is the programming. I knew within a week of getting my new car I wasn't going to continue the subscription. Some channels repeat like every 3 hours for a week before getting new stuff, it is terrible. Add to that, news channels like cnn is about half ads, it isn't worth listening to

    XM has scammed millions of customers with their since cancelled “Unlimited Lifetime” subscription.
    They sold these for over $700, with the promise of being able to transfer it from one vehicle to another for a $75 transfer fee each time.
    However, when you actually try to do this, they say you can’t transfer it. Who the hell owns just one vehicle forever?
    After about an hour of arguing with multiple “customer advocate supervisors” at XM, they’ll eventually let you transfer it, but of course they’ll still charge you the $75 that you expected to pay in the first place.
    It’s no wonder this company has a horrific customer satisfaction rating.
    If you haven’t yet opened an account with XM, I highly recommend not doing it.
    Besides, streaming services are better in every way.

      Sadly, no. I purchased two “Unlimited Lifetime” subscriptions for my two vehicles back in 2009.
      Each and every time I get a new car and wish to transfer the subscription to the radio in the new vehicle, I have to deal with this exact same hassle.

      Lol.
      They sold the plans to me over the phone, and specifically told me that I could transfer them whenever I wanted, as often as I wanted, with a $75 transfer fee each time.
      The "fine print" was added about 2 years after I purchased the plans.

    Do not wast your money upgrading your system for the sake of satellite radio. Most of the magic bandaid digital fixes are more about marketing a product than truly improving sound quality. Internet radio is of much much higher quality and is free ( other than data use). Unlike satellite the audio quality keeps getting better. Pandora has improved 10 fold over the years. There are always a few terrestrial local stations that have excellent audio quality in analog and digital. Many of them have close to the same quality over the internet. If audio quality is your thing give up an satellite.
    I here there are a few premium channels on satellite that have 4 times the bandwidth of conventional sat channels but I have not auditioned them yet. In Theory that should give better sound.
