  • The Catalyst from CraftaBrew.com is a plastic conical that features a removable "trub tap", dishwasher-safe cleaning, and a beautiful design. How does it stand up after actual uses? Mostly good, with only a few things to watch out for.

    Nice review. I appreciate the insightful and comprehensive approach to the product. Glad there are no extra accessories needed.

      I have a few plastic fermenters, I'm really digging this one right now. Small issues that are easily handled.

    I notice when folks put the lid on in reviews they rarely follow the N, S, E, W recommendation in the instructions. Regardless, this was an excellent video. If I hadn't already purchased one (and made a batch) I would have appreciated the breakdown.

      That's funny! I'm sure I did as I'm a religious manual reader, must have been lost along the way. I'll go back to doing it right.

    Marker 7. re: funnel leak. Likely it was debry between the units in the gasket. Spray the site with appropriate liquid before installing funnel.

      Yeah, you're probably right. The overflow when it's removed remains a problem though.
      I still us it regularly. Just had a Mead in it for 4 months.

    Some people said to use a larger capacity mason jar.

    Fellow WNY’er down in Jamestown. I enjoy your high quality reviews. The GrainFather review was excellent! I’m intrigued by the catalyst, but wondered about fermentation temp control. Is there any chance you could review something like the Brewjacket Imersion Pro? My basement is a pretty constant 68-72 degrees year around. Is there even a need for such control for a novice home brewer ? At the very least, I feel like I should be monitoring the temp of my fermentations. How do you manage your gravity readings with this system? In conjunction with trub dumps?

    Great video review. I had a couple of questions. Is there any way to put a heat wrap around the circumference of the fermenter? I have four nosy pets and I would like to ferment with Kveik in a closet with a heating source. Do you pitch the yeast before you close the top lid? How do you do hydrometer measurements? Thanks in advance for your response.

      I'd reach out to Catalyst to be sure the material is good for it, but judging on its dishwasher rating ill bet it is.
      I have a brewbelt that can be adjusted large enough.
      Just don't take my word for it and accidentally melt it :)

    Why would you worry about O2 when adding the yeast from the mason jar per fermentation? If anything that would be a plus.

      @Wnybrews  5 років тому +1

      niudragon32 it’s good very early in fermentation as the yeast will use it. If oxygen is introduced after the growth phase and isn’t fully taken care of by the yeast, it can cause premature staling of the beer.
      You’ll end up with oxidation flavors like cardboard.
      In general, oxygenate before pitching and maybe again for really big beers, but once fermentation slows, try to limit any oxygen getting to the beer. That’s why people will closed-transfer, although I don’t.

      Hi! I use The MyBrewbot currently. The thermometer and PID I was using back then I put together myself. The MyBrewbot is at www.mybrewbot.uk/

      This is the one I bought. The reviews seem varied, but mine works well.

      Did add any Tite seal white tape on the bottom? Or could be a good idea to do to avoid any leaking? Thanks

    • @Wnybrews
      @Wnybrews  6 років тому +2

      No, it's a gasket that the jar twist up against rather than the threads forming the seal. There's no way around the small amount of liquid above the mason jar. As for the leaking while filling the keg, I ended up tightening more (something I'm afraid to do with plastic) and nor having issues.
