    OK, with that out of the way, This is the 6.5 Gallon Catalyst Fermentation System and an unboxing/assembly with my first impressions. This is not a full review and don't expect a score or grade or anything like that on this video. If you'd like a full review after I get some use out of it, please let me know in the comments.

    Beekeeper and started looking around for mead channels since I'll bee looking for other things to do with the honey. Since this is a smaller channel and you do geeky themed meads I figured I'd subscribe. I love game and movie related foods. When the kids are home we do themed movie nights and serve food from the show being watched. Thanks for the content and looking forward to trying some of these recipes out.

    Was just watching a bunch of videos about mead and was wondering when you we’re gonna to make a new video and then BAM your on my home page with a giant sword! I’ve looked at those fermenters and would love one but I don’t have the room. They look awesome though. The guy at the brew store had a good idea. Make 6 gallons and then flavor them individually in secondary so you can still have 6 different types of mead.

      That's not a bad idea!
      Having the room for all of my brewing has been pretty great (and is what ultimately allowed me to start the channel)

    I have to get a Conical fermenter, I'm still fermenting in 6 gallon carboys. And can't wait to see your first batch in that bad boy.

    • @MethodtotheMeadness
      @MethodtotheMeadness  3 роки тому +1

      Nothing wrong with carboys, but if this works as advertised and the slope of the cone section keeps enough of the sediment off, the CONVENIENCE should be stellar.

    I'm really interested to see this thing in action. That sediment catcher is genius.

      @MethodtotheMeadness  3 роки тому +2

      In theory, it should behave similarly to conical fermenters commonly used as an industry standard. I do worry that the slope isn't enough to keep the sediment from collecting in the main fermentation vessel, but that will become clear with time.

    love watching the videos, can't wait to see you give this big guy a first run! do you have any tips on temperature regulation during the fermentation? i'd love to get some small homebrews going again but i worry about temperature swings living up here in the PNW. would you recommend something like this catalyst for someone who's basically just getting started, or would you recommend something smaller for half/a third the price?

    • @MethodtotheMeadness
      @MethodtotheMeadness  3 роки тому +1

      So for the one gallon brews I've been doing, it doesn't stray too far out of ambient. I've done towels/blankets and strategically maneuvered around the vents in the house, but that's about it.
      IF it works as intended, it's pretty compelling as a value proposition for a beginner (especially as it MAY reduce the need for accessory equipment). That said, I think it's BEST positioned for people looking to size-up their batches and/or move into conical fermenting without having to invest in a bunch of accessory equipment.

    how hard would it be to drill a hole in the lid and put a "ferroday" airlock grommet that is sized for a airlock? i have no experience with mead making but i do a bit of fabrication. it could be a sub $10 addition.

    • @MethodtotheMeadness
      @MethodtotheMeadness  3 роки тому

      There's already a spot in the lid for a drilled bung. Additions/changes that I would like to see would maybe include a ball valve spigot in the conic section for easier sampling and maybe a portion of the lid designed to be an adjunct basket (so bags of fruits/herbs/spices/etc) can be added/taken out without removing the entire lid.
      Apparently they do sell a ball valve spigot, but they only have the one lid style.

    I like the concept here, curious to see how it would work for melomels considering a lot of the pulp falls to the bottom....looking forward to seeing something a-brewin in it.
    Update on the "dragon breath" mead. Got it out of primary, and taking a sample of it, ive got to say it tastes really promising so far. Very pepper forward (if used like 3 oz of whole and cracked pepper in a half gallon) and ever so slightly sweet. Its in conditioning now and has been for almost 2 weeks. Ill be testing it again this weekend.

    • @MethodtotheMeadness
      @MethodtotheMeadness  3 роки тому +1

      I currently only have one mead planned for this fermenter (at least for the channel), but it'll definitely be interesting to see how the adjuncts behave when precipitating out of suspension. I like the wide top on it for introducing bags of additives, but some will still likely escape into the mead. The slope worries me just a bit, but until I brew in it, I won't know if that's justified.
      Thank you for the update on the Dragon's Breath! That is a SIGNIFICANT amount of pepper.
