    This proof lays down the physical meaning of dy/dx. I've seen other proofs that just use abstract mathematical steps, just to prove the relation. But this one is bang on. Thanks a lot

    The derivative can also be written as lim [(f(x+h)-f(x))/h] as h-->0 plug f(x)=x^n and use the binomial theorem to expand (x+h)^n this is easier than your proof

    And can you tell me if the whole thing is approximate? I mean x is not equal to a, x approaches a. So nx^(n-1) must not be equal to na^(n-1).
