+jmflame that's what happens when you drop 25 pounds to fight. not making any excuses for rjj but I think he should have retired after his heavyweight fight with ruiz.
Roy Jones Jr can beat Antonio Tarver like this. Antonio Tarver just got lucky with a cheap shot knockout. And 3rd fight Roy Jones Jr didn't have enough confidence. Roy had to take Tarver more serious too that's another part of it.
He didn't have energy to fight a whole fight the way he used to at that point in his career. It was great to watch him be himself even if it was just for a round.
theomegasondaryeus, if you just show a round Jones won. Too bad this isn’t the whole fight...which Jones lost an unanimous decision to Tarver. You could argue Jones didn’t even beat Tarver in the first fight but got a gift decision. Then he got knocked out by Tarver in the second fight. Tarver was the better fighter at this point. Their first fight was the beginning of the end for Jones. Once he slowed down he became easier to hit. In his prime he was untouchable.
Roy jones longest win streak was 49-1 but was really 50-0 . roy jones was pound for pound best for 13 years str8! nobody did that! Antonio tarver record is 29-6 right now which is terrible ! tarver lost to eric harding and roy jones knocked eric harding out ! tarver went to decision with montell griffin winning a split decision and roy jones knocked montell griffin out! roy jones is only natural middleweight 160...hes fighting guys way bigger then him (fact) do your research
if these fights had happened late 90s, earlys 2000s this is how every singlw round wouldve looked like... hurts me deeply to see how history unraveled for one of the greatest in the sport. GO ROY!!! #1 in my book!!!
Beautiful work by Roy in this round, there was a moment in the round in where Roy had him, it was after a Left Hook to Tarver's body, you could see Tarver's legs wobble, had Roy stayed on Tarver He would have knocked him down, that would have been pivotal for the scoring in this fight.
A year before, Jones would have wiped the floor with Tarver. But he lost a few steps and then got totally KO'ed in the rematch, then Johnson put him to sleep and he lost all confidence I believe. But declining is a part of all sports, many fighters adjust and deal with it (eg-Hopkins) Jones struggled and still tried to fight like he once did.
Nah. Travers style size and reach would always give Jones trouble even if Jones beat him, Jones in no point of his career would’ve “ wiped the floor” with tarver.
Wish people would stop bashing Jones, or giving him excuses, and start crediting some of the guys that beat him for being good fighters. Tarver, and Johnson are two guys whose style gave Roy fits, and they beat Roy because they are good, not because they're lucky, or because Roy sucks. Give all these guys credit where it's due.
RJJ was one of the all time greats in his prime. I used to hate how he would drop that hand instead of keeping it up, but it's what made him exciting to watch.
Antonio Tarver. The consummate professional. I like how when Jones started showboating Tarver was calm, and collected and never allowed Roy to take him out of his game plan for the fight.
antonio tarver is like a buster douglas somebody that came at the right time when a legend was on a down slope ....tarver will never be in the top 50 greatest boxers ever! or top 100 boxers ever like Buster Douglas.thats a fact! He will never be roy jones....roy jones can lose 10 more fights and still be one of the greatest boxers to ever put on boxing gloves! fact.....1. Muhammed Ali 2. Roy Jones thats all everybody needs to know!
A prime Jones wipes the floor with Tarver. To be honest the first fight was a clear win for Jones. He just didn’t dominate like he always had so people questioned Jones. But he won by at least four rounds.
Man I remember watching this fight. At the 5th round, when he got through with that 3 punch combo early, and did the little turn with the shoe. I jumped out of my chair. Sadly the fight didn't turn out the way i wanted it to. Roy was an amazing warrior, but he's done now.
Roy Jones is by no means stupid now...He is one of the smartest people to ever make boxing a career. He is obviously not the same fighter he was in his prime now but that doesn't make him stupid. But I agree with you 100% about the fact that in his prime Roy Jones was the most talented fighter ever. Not only did he have talent in boxing but he was a gifted athlete. His movements in the ring reflect his exceptional athleticism.
man see when people talk about roy jones being quick often times they only think about handspeed, yes no doubt that roy jones's handspeed is probably one of the fastest ever in the sport, but his legs were part of his speed to, his ability to move forward/backward with his legs was pretty remarkable, and also how fast he could dodge punches, roy jones in his prime was just an animal
Yup but he was being a man and giving the man a chance since he took Tarvers belts away in that fight. He didn’t have to do that for him and I’m sure Tarver knows that
Exactly. He did not want to win the fight and I kind of got the feeling that Jones thought going the distance was a victory in itself for him. He was in a position to win the fight, but did not dig deep. Just content to pick up his pay check and last the 12 rounds.
I'm sorry but Roy could've won this fight with flying colors. He was given so many opportunities to do so and didn't take it, but he was too scared to engage from round 6 and on. It's not like he was getting outboxed. He was scared! When Tarver was fatigued in the later rounds, punches were getting sloppier, and Jones should've taken advantage of that. Such a disappointment.
jones could have beat tarver in the second and third fights if he was more aggressive and didn't go to the ropes. He almost always gets his ass kicked on the ropes.
You don’t know what you’re talking about. The second fight roy was really aggressive. Jones kept throwing the left counter but missed time and time again. Tarver caught on to it, baited him with the right handed jab anticipating Roy’s left hand counter and it came. Tarver stepped in and struck him. Jones truly should’ve stopped throwing that left counter because the shit just wasn’t working tarvers posture was too awkward for him to land it... but he felt like imma land one of these shits. And tarver was like ah haaa. He’s going to keep throwing that left, keep missing and imma fuck him up. And that’s exactly what happens
Mike Tyson is my hero and was maybe the most talented heavyweight ever, but pound for pound no one can touch Roy Jones... the guy was knocking people out after having his hands behind his head... dancing in the ring and landing 8 punch combos from angles unheard of..
It's so cool to see Roy showing glimmers of his greatness before he ruined his body coming back down from heavyweight. If Roy had stayed at LH instead of moving up to heavyweight and coming back down, he would still be undefeated.
If Roy Jones Jr. could have fought with this class and skill in any of the fights, Tarver would not be known as the guy who X'ed Roy Jones Jr. Great round for Roy!
That is some vintage Roy Jones there. he made Tarver look quite ordinary in this round but he just couldnt keep it going the whole fight. I wish he would hold his hands higher now that his reactions have slowed! He could still be right up there!
thats a great round for jones jr..if he never went up to make history and been the first in 100 yrs to do that then he would have the energy to do that the whole fight...haters always get ya when ur down..
jones became old fast and he always tired fast once he got older. He's the best of our generation fasure, remember he was older when he lost to tarver 1
The weight loss really took a toll on Jones physically. If u compare Jones-Woods (his last fight at LHW before moving up to HW) to Jones-Tarver I (his first fight back at LHW) u can see Jones wasnt the same fighter anymore. His speed and power decreased,he was fatigued very early in the fight and just wasnt the same as when he fought Woods.Sadly,Jones suffered some disappointing losses afterwards, but we dont remember him for that, we remember RJ for being one of the greatest to step in the ring.
Jones had a great strategy for this fight. Tarver looked very skeptical. But tarver landed little punches that counted. Jones did not commit therefore tarver won on petty points
Absolutely. Around the 1:00 mark when he hit those body shots and Tarver laid back in the ropes, Roy backed off to the middle of the ring instead of finishing him.
If Roy would've just started holding his hands up and using the fundamentals he could've done better at the end of his career, he had slowed down a little and his reflexes couldn't compensate for defense as they once did
Jones was done the first time he fought Tarver. His last fight at LHW before moving up to HW was against Clinton Woods, and Jones looked amazing during that fight. Then when he went back down to LHW and fought Tarver he was a totally different fighter.Compare the Jones-Woods fight to the first Jones-Tarver fight, you will see Jones' skills weren't what they used to be.Still RJJR is one of the greatest, one of the best boxers ever.
Lot's of people forget. Roy's a really good person at the end of the day. Je's the only fighter who donated some of his purse to Gerald Mcclellen, when everyone forgot about him...
It doesn't really have much to do with his hands. His punching and hand speed hasn't declined so much. The thing that has killed him are his legs, he doesn't have them no more. He used his legs as his defence and offence. He used them to move in and out quickly and was why he was so elusive and used them to set his punches up from creating angles. His legs are gone, and it's why you see him lay on the ropes and use them like he did. His hands aren't his problems, his legs are what killed him.
Being a Roy fan, I hate to say it but you couldn't be more right. Pride is what made him take the Johnson fight so quickly, should have taken more time off, had a tune-up and then fought either Johnson or a rubber match with Tarver.
Okay what's the sense in playing this video when it doesn't even come to a conclusion it just cuts off with Roy Jones seeming to have gotten the fight going his way after two fights previous one the first close second got knocked out I'm a big Roy Jones fan and would have liked to seen the end cuz I didn't even know that they had a third fight thanks for at least putting it up there so that I did have the knowledge of a third fight now I can go look for the complete clips of this fight
Did you watch the whole fight? If you did, you would know the only guy that fought scared for basically the entire fight was Jones. He was happy with himself that he didn't get knocked out. To him that was a moral victory, he ran and just wanted to survive 12 rounds even if he lost. Anyone that saw the fight knows if anyone was scared it was Jones. He fought to survive, not to win and that isn't debatable.
exactly!!! Some people should walk away while on top.... but like you say its that invincibility and fighters pride that made him carry on, he had nothin else to prove, even beat tarver on his bad day, should of stopped then, hope he retires on a high, if u love him or hate him he was something special, AND STILL!!!
Tarver is still a threat and a tough opponent, especially for a guy who took very little risks his entire career. There are alot of guys who don't fight all that skilled, but get the job done. Tarver was one of them.. I think he was just Roys Kryptonite.
Its all mental with Roy. He proved there that he has the physical tools to beat Tarver. But the memories of the KO stuck with him very much in that fight and it prevented him from going all out. Had he done it, I think he could have won that fight.
You are absolutely right! This was the last fight where he showed how quick he was on his feet. I believe his next fight in 06 against Prince Badi he started doing that peek-a-boo off the ropes crap becuz he no longer had legs. The RJ now is a easy target because he no longers moves. Still my favorite fighter to watch.
IF ONLY RJJ would've duplicated the 5th round the rest of the fight, he would've won the rubber match against Tarver. Alas, he was too concerned about getting "dropped" again by Tarver's left. This 5th round was a masterful display of RJJ's arsenal. The Great Roy Jones, Jr.
Why you, americans, are just about winning or losing ?? Roy has a INCREDIBLE career ! How many of us could dedicate our mind and body during so many years to a such demanding sport ? Roy Jones = boxing. As Much as Sugar Ray leonard is.
Rounds 4 and 5 brought back alot of memories. But Jones doesn't have alot of stamina anymore, and I think he chose this fight, to make alot of money. His heart wasn't in it. :(
yup thats his name..but jones was a absolute monster..alot of fighters didnt wanna fight roy..i mean he threw punches from all angles, unbelievable reflexes & handspeed, great timing/rhythm, counter-puncher, power in both hands, could threw every punch n the book but instead relied on his handspeed & reflexes which u cant blame cuz nobody could touch him, smart fighter, etc..he belongs up there wit tha greats.
A lot of people would argue that but i believe you in that 20 title defenses is nothing to scoff at. The only time Bhop's had any trouble in his fights is when he's moved up. He's definately worthy of being a top 5 middleweight.
I agree, but he hasnt lost all of what he has got. I was a huge fan of Jones when he was in his prime, where he wouldn't back off, where he would get back in your face when you tried to back off. Against Trinidad, I saw somethings that I was used to seeing from Jones. I mean he still has his speed (not as fast but its still fast) and his accuracy is still among the best in fighting.
i agree, i also think that psychologically roy wasnt there in his mind to go after him and finish him in case he got hit by another wild punch.... jones tarver 2 perfect example. in his prime roy would of hammered him everyday of the week, i hope the trinidad fight is a good one, would be nice to see win and go out with a belt against one of the holders. he deserves that much
He did good in this round. He also kicked ass in round 11! Watch the clip from round 11, it is called "jones-tarver 3 round 11 clip" Jones almost had him. He deserved the decision in this fight.
The last great round of Roy's career
+alex campbell i think Jones lost somehow his punching power ... he hit tarver with good body punches and uppercuts, but tarver take it all well.
+jmflame that's what happens when you drop 25 pounds to fight. not making any excuses for rjj but I think he should have retired after his heavyweight fight with ruiz.
Tarver was clearly hurt and backing up, but Jones in all sudden just stepped back and stop throwing. He had lost his stamina .

he had nothin else to prove, even beat tarver on his bad day, should of stopped then,
hope he retires on a high, if u love him or hate him he was something special, AND STILL!!!
Tarver is still a threat and a tough opponent, especially for a guy who took very little risks his entire career.
There are alot of guys who don't fight all that skilled, but get the job done. Tarver was one of them.. I think he was just Roys Kryptonite.
We love you Roy please stop. And if you continue you need to get in real shape. You can't be old and out of shape trying to fight these youngster!!!
The Great Roy Jones, Jr.
i think this is what a late 90's jones could do the entire fight
Why you, americans, are just about winning or losing ?? Roy has a INCREDIBLE career ! How many of us could dedicate our mind and body during so many years to a such demanding sport ? Roy Jones = boxing. As Much as Sugar Ray leonard is.
That's the problem with Roy he fought when he wanted to fight.
Rounds 4 and 5 brought back alot of memories. But Jones doesn't have alot of stamina anymore, and I think he chose this fight, to make alot of money. His heart wasn't in it. :(
1995 Roy Jones: cant be touched
2005 Roy Jones: cant be missed
yup thats his name..but jones was a absolute monster..alot of fighters didnt wanna fight roy..i mean he threw punches from all angles, unbelievable reflexes & handspeed, great timing/rhythm, counter-puncher, power in both hands, could threw every punch n the book but instead relied on his handspeed & reflexes which u cant blame cuz nobody could touch him, smart fighter, etc..he belongs up there wit tha greats.
BEAUTIFUL BODY SHOTS!!!!
Hopkins, Toney, Griffin...these are all B fighters at their best.
I mean he still has his speed (not as fast but its still fast) and his accuracy is still among the best in fighting.
i agree, i also think that psychologically roy wasnt there in his mind to go after him and finish him in case he got hit by another wild punch.... jones tarver 2 perfect example.
in his prime roy would of hammered him everyday of the week, i hope the trinidad fight is a good one, would be nice to see win and go out with a belt against one of the holders. he deserves that much
This shows you, what Roy would do to Tarver, when he would be in his prime.
roy isn't in his prime here he was at his best in the 90's but u still see why he was so good
Volstar88, Yeah they just gave him the Val Barker Award - The most outstanding boxer of the olympic games. What do you think about that?
He did good in this round. He also kicked ass in round 11! Watch the clip from round 11, it is called "jones-tarver 3 round 11 clip" Jones almost had him. He deserved the decision in this fight.
I agree. I don't see any reason Roy couldn't keep it up. Everytime he attacked Tarver in that fight, Tarver would get scared and not throw back.
What other great fighters were around at the time for him to fight?
A glimpse of what Roy was in his prime
ROY... JONES... JR...
