Actron Air Conditioner displaying E9 Fault

In this video I attend a job where the customer has said that the Air Conditioning system has been working fine on cooling but since using it on heating, has been coming up with an E9 error code.

I'm not sure if you mentioned it in the video, but the ESP mode is external static pressure mode , so the board will have sensors mounted in the supply and return ducts to measure this pressure difference and then controll the fan speed to maintain this setting, my thinking on this would be with all zones open the fan is moving more air easier so to speak , max duct area available, so the ESP is lower , ie difference between supply and return duct pressure is say , 0.3 inches of water column we'll call this the setpoint, and full air volume being moved.When a zone is closed , the difference between supply and return duct pressure increases , say to 0.5 inches of water column, due to less area available for air to move thru, say 75% available as it's only operating on 3 of the 4 zones.
The board now sees the 0.5 water column, with a 0.3 setpoint , so it reduces the fan speed to reduce the ESP back to setpoint. This then reduces the air volume across the coil and causes the unit to trip on HP.
I wonder is this a newly installed unit or possibly your first visit?.
You were correct in shortening the ducts and making smooth bends where possible, I think the unit is oversized for the ductwork, or another way of saying it, the ductwork is undersized for the unit.
You hit the nail on the head with your diagnosis..
Is there variable speed on the outdoor unit fans?..

Any time you go to an Actron for a E9 in winter check the fan PWM settings on the controller.
Typical complaint from the customer is "I've just changed it over to heating and its got a E9 fault", Clean filter etc.
Have come across it many times where the indoor board/wall controller has been changed and the fan PWM settings haven't been changed from factory default.
Default fan PWM settings from factory is for a 9kw unit with L 39%, M 43%, H 72%. This is why when you run it in H it will seem ok.
However if this unit is a 17kw for example then the settings should be L 73%, M 90%, H 99%.
Each size unit has a different fan PWM setting and have found this wrong numerous times.
This is quality information mate. Thanks heaps for sharing. This had a very modern looking controller (one of the new ones). I wonder if it got changed somewhat recently. Regardless, thanks again for sharing mate. Legend.
My ActronAir got the same problem since yesterday in the recent cold Sydney weather. Is there anything we can do as consumers first before calling for services?
@@TravelwithLei yeah absolutely. Is the filter clean? Does it still happen on high fan speed and all zones open?

@@maracservices this might sound silly: How can I know if the filter is clean? I vacuum it yearly. It’s the kind of thick fabric/foam filter. Should I rinse it like what you did in the video? Should I test the aircon without the filter?
I find hosing it out is better then vacuuming. You can run it without the filter temporarily to see if it still trips.
It might have nothing to do with the filter. It could literally be short on gas and in that case the filter doesn’t mean anything. I’d run it without the filter temporarily, all zones on and on high fan and see how it goes. If it still trips, you should probably ring someone up. Hope that helps a little.

I don't see this brand in Japan, but if you have any hints,
Check if there is a problem with the condensed temperature sensor. If there is a high-pressure sensor, I will check it.
That's because if it's Daikin, it will continue to move to the target pressure or the target condensation temperature.
However, this seems to be a problem with the amount of air in the indoor machine.

Hi Mitch , how much should be the normal superheat readings for an air con unit.
Depends on the manufacturers specs but for generally 8k.

Hi Mate, Just wondering if you’ve ever come across an Actron with an E44 error code on the outdoor unit? Have an Advance CRV240T unit, Actron installed a discharge muffler for the noise earlier this year, new unit installed in January.
Issue occurs only on Auto fan speed mode and on heat when it goes to one zone only. 5 tech visits, not fixed yet. I have 7 zones. Tech has seen the discharge pressure pass 3700.
When it gets to one zone is when the issue occurs, it’ll cut out (not straight away though about 10 mins or so) and the external unit will show E44 and then “reboot” after 5 minutes.
This is regardless of the zone.

Has this fault only started to occur after the discharge muffler was put on?
Does this fault only occur when you put the 1 zone on? So if you had 5 zones on for example, it doesn’t come up?
@@maracservices The muffler was installed during the hotter months. But never noticed it occurring before on heat, maybe because I used low, medium or high. Doesn’t happen with those 3 modes.
Only discovered the issue one cold morning.
If I put 5 zones on for example, issue doesn’t occur when the zones are running, but will occur on that last zone to get to temp as the other 4 zones have got to temp.
If I have one zone only running and on auto the issue will occur. Low medium and high issue doesn’t occur.
Auto goes as low as 20% PWM.
Tech from the Actron service agent (initial 3 visits) has seen: Suction Pressure: 932kPa Discharge Pressure: 3716kPa Superheat: 4.6K the EEV 63% Actron Techs 2 visits seen same thing.
Issue doesn’t occur on cool or fan mode.
Forgot to mention, Actron “think” that the muffler they installed is not causing an issue nor impacting the performance of the unit.
@@DavidOrlando77 its an airflow issue. You can’t close most of the zones off as it will reduce the air from going over the condensing coil. It’s like putting a piece of cardboard over the radiator in your car (the pressure and temp goes up).
This e44 error is just telling you that the discharge pipe temp is too hot. It cuts the system out to protect itself. If you keep more zones on, it allows more air to go over the coil and therefore doesn’t cut out. If an installer is going to use “smart zone motors” (the ones that open and close automatically when the zone gets to temp, they need to install dump zones (also know as constant zones). These dump zones are normally in a hallway or living area. This will allow the zone motors to close when the rooms get to temp without reducing the air that goes over the coil because there is dump zones to allow the air to escape. Does that make sense. This particular video is of a job that had the same issue. The customer has just not used the esp mode and ran it with most zones open and it hasn’t cut out since. If the house doesn’t have dunp zones, it will come up with a pressure fault or temp fault during heating mode. There’s nothing “wrong” with your Air Conditioner. It’s actually good that it’s cutting out. It’s more an installation issue. Easy fix though.

@@maracservices Only thing though is Actron claims there is no need for dump zones for the Advance series. Could be possible the muffler they installed isn’t installed correctly. The parts they used are for the smaller Advance units but they said that what they used is also suitable for my bigger unit. I checked the packaging and doesn’t have my model listed.
