New Orleans music legend Allen Toussaint wrote Southern Nights. If you really want your mind blown, look up his version - the original. It's truly an ethereal thing of beauty you'll never forget. Jimmy Webb (phenomenal songwriter himself, wrote Wichita Lineman among many other iconic tunes) was pivotal in convincing Glen to cover Toussaint's song and to do a complete, upbeat arrangement heard in here and that was a huge hit for Glen. I grew up hearing this one and love it but wow was I staggered when I heard the original. Give it a listen, sit back and just bask in the dreamy glow of true southern nights...
Agreed, and while that is often tru of great music, every such song is going to be its own kind off time capsule. The instruments, genre/style, lyrics, may stand the test of time, yet all root themselves in particular eras of music. They take influence from older music, and genuine creativity for a masterpiece that is one of many defining anthems of generations. Jim Croce's I've Got a Name, Willie Nelsons entire career, Tom T. Hall's I Like Beer, King's Harvest Dancing in the Moonlight, Kansas Carry on My Wayward Son, and who can forget Free Bird by Lynard Skynard lol. Just an opportunity to point out some other music really. One does normally list music to recommend.
@@WD-zk6fg not to mention stevie wonder's 'sir duke', nick drake's 'fly', 'come on eileen', 'Tennessee waltz' and scores more. the people that made 'guardians of the galaxy' are clearly aware of your simple truth and have exploited it to their own benefit.
This is a pop country superstar, and icon. Glenn Campbell has so many great hits, it’s insane. He’s that good. This song creates feel good mood and images.
great chord progression in this one, too. I feel like it's one of these full package songs: has great melody, great harmony, a catchy and a sophisticated enough guitar riff. Not to mention a walking talent that was Glen Campbell, he sings it like he means it. Absolute spot on!
I love this performance. There is another one on here with a full orchestra and the 3 beautiful ladies singing with him, I love it. Why is the audience so dead, lol?! I know all about Southern nights, especially summers in TX. Thank you and RIP Mr. Campbell. 💎💙💥💫🍾🎇🫶🏾💝🔥❤️
What's good about this performance is Glen is NOT lip syncing, like in so many other TV performances from that era (60s, 70s, even 80s). He really is singing the song here! The backing band sounds much like the original studio recording, but that's because of Glen's arrangement. This was shortly after the studio recording was released, so the sound was still fresh. What a performer!
+@nakadai4444 That is exactly why New Orleans artist Allen Toussaint wrote it for his 1975 record. The song is about his old Creole relatives and spending evenings with them. ua-cam.com/video/A0neL1hdA6Q/v-deo.html
We went to a farm stand and they had this song playing in the background. My 3yr old just couldn't help but dance to it so had to search this gem for her. ❤
This song was one of my mom's favorites. She was in the hospital very sick with staff infection for a long time. She would call every night to visit with me and ask me to play this song over and over for her. I still love this song!

One of my favorite songs by Glen Campbell. I love & miss you so much Glen! Rest In Peace. Thank you for the legendary real country music you left behind for us old school to enjoy!
RIP dear Glen, and sing with the angels. As a Southerner, this song is especially dear to me. Glen Campbell was an incredibly talented singer and guitarist. And in his prime, as seen here, he was beyond sexy!!
tell me about it...I was 7; now I'm 52. I remember it going through my head during my little league soccer game after hearing it in the car on the way there. very catchy
In 2020 I went on a cross country road trip for Massachusetts to California and back. I don’t know when but this song came on, on my Spotify and my lord, it was so perfect driving past the ranches and deep valleys. I fell in love with this song and the south. It’s truly a beautiful thing to be out on the interstate highway listen to songs. I miss it so much. It was so freeing seeing everything
My mother told me she went into labor with me eating french fries & watching the Glen Campbell tv show in the hospital. I was born in California in 1970. I now live in Kentucky. The southern skies and trees are indeed beautiful here. Thank you, Mr. Campbell for this beautiful song. RIP ♥️
Goodbye Glen Campbell. I may not have been a country music fan but this has been one of my favorite songs of yours and of this year. Thank you so very much for giving us the gift of your voice and your music.
More, more, this has to be my fav song. Great beat and lyrics. You remind me of our Dr Chris Brown, a famous Vet from Sydney, Australia. Spitting image. RIP, love you and all your music. Grew up with you and you were always singing. 🌻🌻🌻👍👍
This song brings back so many memories of my childhood. I remember hearing this song playing over the haler on the deck of our trawler my dad owned and captained. We could pick up a top 40 radio station until we got about 100 miles out from San Diego our home port. I used to go out with my dad and his crew on day runs to test the boat and gear. Good times.
One of my faves of Glen's. And how gorgeous and sexy was he here? Wow!! Glen Campbell had effortless talent and skill as a vocalist and guitarist. No one else like him. He is gone but through his music he will live on. May he be at peace now.
Glen Campbell had such a unique style and sound. It's no secret that Keith Urban credits Glen as being a major influence on his music, and I can definitely hear similarities in their styles. Great stuff.

Jerry Reed inspired Glen Campbell for the opening lick.
He was a tremendous guitarist. People forget how he could mimic the best singers like Elvis and others.
Found this off of a video about roofing. Best Southern song I've stumbled upon in a hot minute.

"Southern Nights"
Southern nights
Have you ever felt a southern night
Free as a breeze
Not to mention the trees
Whistling tunes that you know and love so
Southern nights
Just as good even when closed your eyes
I apologize
To any one who can truly say
That he's found a better way
Southern skies
Have you ever noticed
Southern skies
It's precious beauty
Lies just beyond the eye
It goes running through the soul
Like the stories told of old
Old man
He and his dog that walk the old land
Every flower touched his cold hand
As he slowly walked by
Weeping willows would cry for joy
Joy
Feels so good
Feels so good it's frightening
Wish I could
Stop this world from fighting
La-da-da-da-da, da-la-da-da-da-da
Da-da-da-da-da-da, da-da-da, da-da-da
Mystery
Like this and many others
In the trees
Blow in the night
In the southern skies
Southern nights
They feel so good it's frightening
Wish I could
Stop this world from fighting
Da-da-da-da-da, da-da-da-da-da-da
Da-da-da-da-da-da, la-da-da, da-da-da-da, da-da-da-da-da-da...
Southern Night's is my favorite song of all times. Love it and Rest in peace Glenn
