Thanks so much for this, this will really help with my WW2 documentary on operation Barbarossa, its exactly what I've been trying to achieve for the past few weeks but no one explains things as clearly as you do. Much love from the uk
You can drop a flag on the map and then use the Pin button. Then in the Effect Controls panel you can get more fine control over how it reacts when the map moves.
Thanks for this vídeo. I’ve been making history videos, but my maps have been pretty bad. Thanks to your videos, I’m creating better ones now. This one, especially, is going to help me a lot. Thanks again!
Plz make a video on geolayer workflow. How to work on geolayer with your own experience. Like creating one simple project and rendering it is easy. But when we work on big projects managing all files, using same styles and elements in different map comp is difficult. So I kindly request you to make videos on geolayer work flow if possible.
Finally! just the video i was looking for. Thanx! But when you use Turbulence effect you will lose details of the invasion line. If you don't, it will really look too rough and ugly. What do you do then?
Hi Boone, love the tutorial. What's the Korean War Map "anchor"??? Is it another solid layer? I can't figure that part out. What does the anchor do? Also, when I turn on 3D for the "Animate Me Matte", it makes the matte layer disappear in my 3D comp.
Bro i have a question, as the border moves, can we show with fire... If yes, how? I have a project in which i have to show that there was a riot which spreaded across country in map...
I make things waaaay more complicated than they need to be. This is fantastic Boone! Thank you for what you do! Your class has helped me a lot and I finally got a tik tok to hit 1M in views. :'). THANK YOU!
i watch your video last one year... currently i have a issue in geo layer whenever i drow a country.. shape layer not showing in my timeline...can anyone fix it??
I was looking for an example to help create a "Moving Territory" for a short film of mine. This helps immensely! Your channel has been a great help when it comes to learning more and more about After Effects!
Really solid tip about Turbulent Displace on solids vs shape layers. That tripped me up a lot when I was first starting to use Geolayers. To add some additional context for anyone who's curious, the reason that this happens is a difference in how AE renders vector vs raster layers. When you take raster layers into 3D space (or even just resize them) AE interpolates between the positions of each pixel on that layer based on where its fixed position is relative to the camera. This means that turbulent displace can be rendered BEFORE the 3D positioning. On the other hand, shape layers don't have a fixed position because they're vector paths, so AE recalculates the position of the pixels in 2D space every frame. This is true even when the layers are 3d. Even though the path points might be in 3D space, the actual rendered shape isn't projected into 3D the same way. This means that in essence, the displace is being rendered AFTER the 3D transformation instead of before, thus its position shifts when the layer moves relative to the camera. This also applies to other raster effects as well, like roughen edges. One way you can get around this is to precomp your vector layers before applying the effects to them. However, this can cause issues with shapes created using Geolayers because the position values are tied to coordinates. But for everything else, it's a decent workaround.
As a side note, one of the first maps I ever made was a Korean War map, and this tutorial would have definitely come in handy back then. This is much cleaner than the solution that I made at that time.
Same concept. You just have to get the map and shapye layers manually (you can find shape layers of countries on the internet as well) and everything else is mostly the same

Make sure you're using them on solids or pre comps.
How do you select 2 polygons to merge ?
Select them both in the GEOlayers panel, and then the merge button should appear at the bottom of the panel.

How do you do this on a simple map. I have a map as a frame hold, and I want red and blue to move over it
It's really just applying to same exact technique, you would just need a country boundary on a map image.
Thank you so much for explaining it in the simplest way, you are amazing
Happy to hear that! I'm glad it was clear and concise.
guys do anyone know how to zoom in or move around the map after we've done all of these?
