SPOILER WARNING‼️ I feel like 364 hit so much harder than the eclipse because we had worked so hard to get to where we were and then you-know-who ripped it all away. It’s hard to say if it is more impactful than the eclipse considering it doesn’t hold much weight without that story having happened, but you absolutely feel the emotions guts feels afterward. So dehumanizing. You want him to give in fully and shed his humanity-you really wouldn’t blame him. Also having just recently read it, leading up to that reveal of the child, it clicked in my head what was happening, and that whole chapter built suspense like a mf-er. Aside from that moment, I think the end of the Millennium Falcon arc also beats the eclipse.
The Eclipse is the pinnacle of despair, but there is always more to hurt you-and always more to make you smile in the bleak. Struggle onwards in your fight against the pain and harrow.
People only hype up The Golden Age, and The Eclipse so much because it's the only thing that's had good (popular) adaptations. Everything that comes after in the manga is even better, with some of the greatest characters in all of fiction
Honestly it’s pretty good up all the way through , golden age is just the perfect blend with a perfect ending it’s kind of a Shakespearean tragedy that can work as a stand alone story . But what makes berserk so epic in the golden age is only heightened from lost children till the end of millennium falcon tbh . It’s just not into one self contained story but rather arcs .
Both Guts and Casca are traumatized, but they both escape that trauma in different ways. Guts has always escaped his feelings by killing things, that's how he copes with the trauma, All throughout the golden age arc, guts was already escaping trauma, of his incredibly fucked up childhood, and the fact he had to kill a child, so he's used to it. Casca doesnt have a trained response to trauma so her mind defaulted to the first thing it could think of.
He channels all that trauma into pure rage and hatred towards he who shall not be named (may his name rot and be forgotten). I think that's the only thing keeping him going after the eclipse, until he meets the gang. Such an interesting character
Guts never really escapes his trauma, he just bottles it up and feeds it into rage. It's the whole schtick of the beast of darkness later. It'sbest represented as his sword. It get's bigger as his character arcs go on, and never really diminishes. He just gets ever more dependant of it and it gets better at killing things.
People who say that the eclipse is the pinnacle of the story writing are just people who've only watched the anime! Because it's so much better after that.
Peterson only really went bad in the last 5-6 years. Before all of his weird influencer culture warrior crap he actually was a highly respected Harvard academic. He’s become a brain rotted political commentator recently but his older work legitimately has merit, or at least I believe that. My politics don’t align with his at all, but 12 Rules is a fantastic book and that i can’t deny
happy for the longer format! i cannot wait for him to read the conviction arc, it’s one of my favorites. but then again, all of berserk’s arcs are my favorites.
I would say Guts is also extremely troubled by what happened, not to Casca's extent but close. The way he expresses it is through self-destruction. He goes off on his own with a mission to kill any apostle he runs into, with no regard for his own safety. He processes trauma by shutting others out, which we see when he takes off running minutes after awakening from his several-day coma.
It's never outright started, but I think Guts's Beast of Darkness is similar to what happened to Casca: because of the Brand of Sacrifice, the pain they both carried from the Eclipse had become tangible entities that are actively working against them. While Guts eventually develops the Beast of Darkness through his rampage as the Black Swordsman, pushing himself closer and closer to the brink, Casca's natural urge to escape the pain inflicted upon her was weaponized into a mental prison, where she'd nearly completely shut down from the outside world.
I was having a pretty crumby evening but then this hit my feed. Your thoughts and opinions really brought a smile to my face. Thank you so much for your insight Ive been absolutely loving it and I cant wait to hear more from you soon!!
lI really like the way you see each chapter and examine it, I think it is the best because you really understand the story, it shows that you are really hooked on the plot and it is what one as a fan wants, I am sure that Master Miura would be happy that his work continues to be so recognized and loved.
Oh boy this guy is going to love the next arcs so much. Lost Children, Tower of Conviction, Millenium Falcon, Fantasia, etc. Godspeed oldman, godspeed.
The Christianity parallels and Guts' statement about, "Stop praying and use your hands for something useful" should be interesting. I think our Dad host will recognize that in their world, Guts is right.
In the case of mental trauma, Guts still went from having a family, losing it, becoming a person who doesn’t let anyone close, to meeting the Band of the Hawk and even seeing them as friends and family. Then all the events leading to the Eclipse where not only did his “equal” cause the death of the Band, break and vegetize Casca as he was forced to watch, but also took away their child. Guts’ spirit and rage is why he was able to fight back as you mentioned, but his fight isn’t over as the only survivor able to take revenge for what Femto has done, he carries that weight with him as he continues his journey, not knowing or caring IF he could defeat Femto and restore Casca, but he won’t let himself die until he can save her. But I do see that what Casca went through was also personal to her past trauma, but I think the focus of the narrative is purposely showing why someone like Guts could keep on going after everything he has been through. And that main focus is inspiring.
The entirety of Berserk I think is AMAZING! Its absolutely a 10/10 series! I think Golden Age is the best arc in most people's eyes because it perfectly sets up the rest of the story while telling a truly incredible and horrifying tale (They aren't wrong). All of the arcs are great in their own right and there isn't really any dips in quality, but honestly my personal favorite arc is Hawk Of The Millennium Empire!
Now I'm caught up and waiting for new videos. Thanks for all the previous ones and can't wait for lost children arc, best one imo. Would be great if you went back to the first chapters before the golden age arc and reviewed them with the new knowledge.
A really good way of explaining in my head at least it that. Guts responds to trauma with "plant your feel, grit your teeth and keep fighting" that being his awnser to actually everything (from what ive seen) so it allows guts to almost ignore the mental turmoil that he does have. He even says multiple times "black everything else out." Or "stop thinkin" stuff like that. Thats why guts is back on his feet so quickly. Meanwhile casca dosent have that, she couldent grit her teeth or plant her feet. Thats not even how she deals with her problems. More often then not she bottles them up and refuses to speak about them. So having sonthing like this where its this wicked. It breaks people and it definitely broke her.
yeah the eclipse is just the beginning (and i’m glad you’ve realized that) - anyone who calls it the pinnacle didn’t read the rest of the series - the art and story gets exponentially better as the series goes on and my favorite story arcs are all after the eclipse. I think a lot of folks check out after the eclipse (for understandable reasons) but it’s very much the first act or even the prologue of a 4 or 5 act play. You’ll meet so many characters who are equally as interesting and complex as the hawks in these coming arcs, and the stakes and fun remain just as high, if not higher, than the chapters that preceded/the eclipse. Can’t wait to go on this journey with you and farewell until next time!
I always thought his name sounded....special, in some way. Then I learned about femtoseconds, which makes more sense when you think about his ability to stop Guts from stabbing his face like he was stopping time.
I really love what you’re doing with these discussions. One idea if you don’t mind me suggesting is put some background art to stretch the video. It might help more people look at it, you can keep the phone ratio for shorts, you can even mix the he editing a little for the UA-cam vids. It would be a bit more work but I think people would love it even though you’d essentially make each vid twice. One for UA-cam and another me for tik tok
I love the edits you put in they are hilarious lmao, wow I’m surprised how far gramps read this time around, I guess there are a lot of books t get through, but I wonder what gramps though of skullnight encounter with void when he saved Guts, maybe he didn’t understand? Because it shows a rivalry or some sort of distain or hint of having prior history between them
I think the biggest thing about Guts is that to him trauma is as breathing and life. Hiw he was born, raised, abused. Theres little new under the sun to him. Its not resolved certainly, but its in its own little cage. Most people would probably be broken as Casca was. Too much all at once as an adult. It'll take years for her to find her way again. While Guts carves through their enemies and slowly unravels himself into someone that can bring others some hope for the future.
As a footnote, the coming chapter "Lost children" Is widely regarded as one of the best sections of the story. It truly brings up whether or not Guts is a good man...
Imo, the Eclipse and it's following two arcs (Lost Children and Conviction) are where Miura's writing style truly begins to bloom. The Eclipse is the first peak in the mountain range we call Berserk, and it's only gonna get better from here.
I’m so interested to what he thinks about Rosine and the Moonlight child, seeing his reaction to when such demonic beings are so humanised is going to be so unusual
Ngl Grifith didn’t wanna traumatize guts outta hatred He was being a real bro and he loved his bro so much he wanted to fuse their child to combine them Fusion REBORN ngl that’s fire
The Eclipse is definitely not the pinnacle of Berserk, it's for me, easily the lost children arc, it's the culmination of everything that made berserk great in the first place.
The eclipse is literally the inciting incident when the story begins. Everything before was just exposition. Definitely not the pinnacle of the story. Just showing you the most significant moment that shapes and molds guts into the black swordsman.
The Eclipse is the pinnacle of tragedy in the series, but the writing keeps getting better and better. There’s so much good stuff coming. Hell, the tower of conviction arc is amazing and it’s just around the corner. Fuck I forgot about the lost children arc. Not my favorite, honestly. Although the fight with Rosine at the end is pretty awesome.
For me The Eclipse is like a black belt in martial arts. People focus too much on the black belt, when in reality a black belt just means you are proficient in the basics and are ready to start the _real_ training. The Eclipse marks the end of the beginning, the established basics of the story before the _real_ adventure begins.

It's not impossible for someone to rewrite their sense of value or pride to cope with personal trauma, telling themselves it doesn’t matter. But you can't apply the same detachment when it happens to someone else. You’d feel a deep sense of responsibility, unable to neglect or push aside what they’ve been through. A lover always remembers their partner at their best; they can’t just disregard them the way they might do with themselves. This is especially true for someone like Guts, a prideful man who cares for his loved ones. Violation strikes at a person’s pride, and Griffith did it in the most devastating way possible-by violating Casca and showing Guts how powerless he was to protect her.

I’d argue that seeing someone you love being violated is far worse than experiencing it yourself.
