My 0 Wooki arrived last week, very happy with it, and Brandon is one affable hombre, asked him to put a rush on it and it arrived a week and a half early. Customer service I can get accustomed to. Thanks for the vid Shug, you are indeed the wise man of hammocking.
I've been devouring your videos. I'm planning on doing the AT next year. Jut for giggles I pulled out a hammock i bought 3 years ago and never used. I couldn't get it set right. It has no ridge line. I still slept as well or better than I do in my bed. So now I'm shopping for a hammock setup to use instead of a tent. Thank you for your time and shared wisdom. I will be putting it to great use.
I love how more people have watched this than the video that Warbonnet themselves had put out 😂 I know I came here first to check and see the ins and outs lol thanks for the info I just sprung for one of these puppies
I just got my Wookie 20° in the bushwack leafy camo man that thing is light can't wait for the weather to cool off more so I can actually use it thanks for your videos. Stewart
Hey Shug, great video. I just got my Blackbird XLC & Wookie 2 weeks ago. I already slept in it a couple nights that got down to 4 degrees here in Colorado. I was thoroughly impressed on how warm it is! Warbonnet is awesome. Love your videos Shug! Take care.
I went on my first camping trip last night. And I used a hammock so I've been watching your videos for awhile to prepare. It was -4 last night and I was nice and warm in my Bear Butt hammock!
Keeps it simple which is always good. Wow it looks great! Thanks for the heads up on this nice setup. I would have thought you would have three feet of snow about now...Thanks again.
My 20 Degree HG UQ arrived and i can't wait to try it , real nice stitching good adjustment . If i had a WB Hammock i would have gone for the Wooki that bit of extra fabric must help with the chill. We really are lucky to have so much great gear to use on the trail. I saw Grace eyeing up your fancy feast stove, she would need to get up Early .." E y " to sneak it away for sure. Great Vid.
Just scored a used "old version" multicam XLC from Ryan Dye of Indiana...beautiful & comfy. One guy thought the toggles had to do with the underquilt, and Warbonnet stated that the toggles needed to be connected to preserve the integrity of the old-style net (paraphrase). I have yet to mess with it & see exactly what they connect to, aside from maybe slipping them under the loop around the man bun, brain, whipping. But yeah...awesome hammock. Warbonnet refered to it as "highly desireable". I see why you like them. Always wanted one. You would like this 2013ish hammock I scored: beautiful multicam. Very impressed by it. The guy at Warbonnet wanted me to sell it to him if I ever decided to, stating that it was a hard-to-find classic. Feels great.
I'm really glad you made this video, I was just out with a friend yesterday fiddling around with the hammocks. I have the xlc blackbird with the wookie 0, and he has the xlc with the 0 incubator. I'm not as impressed with the wookie as I am with the incubator. As the wind started blowing it was getting into the gaps and letting the heat out, and there really doesn't seem to be anything you can do about it. I kinda wish there was some kind of adjustment on it. I might give it one more time out, I really want to like it. I love every other product I got, the superfly is an awesome tarp, the hammock is so comfortable, and the mamba quilt is seriously a nice warm quilt. maybe I should've gotten extra fill.
Maybe try migrating your down...meaning give it a good shake to distribute the down. Or put it in the dryer on low for a short time. Are you speaking of the gap by shoulder? Did you have a tarp pitched?
To fiddle or not to fiddle, that is the question. I just bought a Blackbird XLC. Have been using it with no bottom insulation at all, but have only been out when it's warm. I'm shopping under quilts. The Wookie looks like the ultimate great choice to mate with this hammock. Just one concern I have: While "set it and forget it" sounds great, sometimes having a little adjustability can be a good thing, especially when it's just a little warmer than your temp rating and you'd like to vent a little to cool down. I was looking at the Yeti and the Greylock - both are 3/4 length, lighter, and just plain awesome. But a 3/4 length would require a little more fiddling and a pad under the lower legs. I carry a Z seat, so I'll have a pad. I'm soliciting thoughts on no fiddling vs. possibly a little more flexibility in temp range.
Pretty fiddle free to get it right on a Warbonnet hammock but you can went it by loosening the footend rubber or adding shock cord to it an inch or two. Or you can slide it to the side too venting it......ua-cam.com/video/FMhYRJ9dxtA/v-deo.html
Hey Shug! If you're ever feeling up to some fiddling, I'd love to see a video of you testing the Wookie with some other 11" hammocks. I have a Chameleon and I'm really curious as to how the Wookie will work with it. THANKS FOR EVERYTHING!
It does work but most need to add some shock cord or something on other hammocks to make it fit. I have had it on my Chameleon. Actually see it on a Dutchware no net hammock at 5:26 in on here....ua-cam.com/video/FMhYRJ9dxtA/v-deo.html
it doesn't get as cold temperature level here in the south , but our humidity makes it more damp and bone chillingly different cold . that's why when i camp down here I don't use ANY goose down . ive used wiggys bags for many years , and they work well for me . not ultralight , but worth the extra weight . and I'm a cold natured sleeper . so I simply use a military foam pad in my warbonett blackbird hammock , and an ultima thule bag . if its really damp I keep a heavy wool blanket as well....in teens down to -0 . always warm . but that's just my choice . everything else is much similar to what you and many others tote . ive always taken and used an over tarp too . ive used warbonett blkirds and xlc`s for years now....only kind I'm comfortable in so far....ive tried others but still like the war bnt ones best . thanks for all the great vids over the yrs shug.....ive sent em out on my pages now for over 4 years now . you keep many informed and laughing !
inndeed , sir ! but....if I was up in minnestoa or anywhere near where you are.....full wooki , and western goose down....for certain with the blackbirds of course .
I just got a Warbonnet Eldorado for Christmas! Whooo Buddy!!! I’m watching all the Wooki vids trying to figure out how I’m going to get my current quilt attached. I’m going to be attempting to rig up my four pound down comforter under it when I go camping for about a week here soon. Four Pounds!?!? It was the best $10.00 I ever spent on camping gear! I’m sure I’ll be getting a Wooki at some point. I’m trying to lighten my load while not spending much and staying comfortable in the cold...haha, yeah, wish me luck with that. I might end up cutting my heavy comforter in half on a diagonal and making two top quilts and I can pretend that I’m buying a Wookie and getting two topquilts for $10.00!!! I think that’s called a Wooki mind trick. ...I had just gotten a nice, affordable, warm, system going for winter that would just barely fit into my backpack and now I’ve got to figure it all out on my first new hammock in years. Man, talk about difficult problems in life! Oh well, I’ll have about a week in 20 and 30 degree weather to figure it out. I’ll be car camping so weight doesn’t matter, I’m just trying to get everything whittled down and optimize my system while keeping it affordable. I’m getting there, and your videos help me. Thanks Shug-shug shugeddy-shug!! All secure on the southern rear!!! haha! get it? Like, uhh...my butts not cold! hahahahaha!!!!
shugemery : Well I got my cheap rigged up quilt all situated. It’s kept me pretty warm in the freezing rain - I’m in a frozen cloud right now, no flakes just a mist of frozen stuff floating in the freezing air. I woke up with sheets of ice on my tarp this morning. I stayed dry and pretty warm last night. My only issue is that on my first camping trip in the Eldorado I’m not getting to enjoy the big new hammock. The way I’ve got my quilt attached isn’t allowing me to get the diagonal lay without the paracord squeezing me in. So I think you’ve got me sold on the Zero Degree Wookie. It sure is expensive watching your videos! ...But my hammocking sure is getting nicer. :D
Haha...I just re-watched this video and checked to see what I commented in the past. I'm much more comfy than I was when making my first comment. This comment is being typed as I lay in my 0°F Wooki with a 20°F topquilt in 40° weather just loving life right now! Whoooo Buddy!! ...and I learned a new trick on this trip. I use my rain-jacket as a partial topcover over my bugnet. It just keeps the breeze off of my face and keeps my nose just a few degrees warmer. At 40° it makes a very noticeable difference and doesn't cost me any weight or bulk because I always have my rain-jacket. I had previously been using a Snugpak Jumgle Blanket XL as a full-length insulated topcover. But due to the weight I am exploring my lower comfort limits without it. At a certain temperature and wind-speed it will certainly be worth it's two-pound weight again, but I need to find that point.
I know this isn't the normal time of year to be watching and commenting on cold weather quilts, but I just ordered myself a Hammock Gear 20° Econ Burrow to compliment my 0° Wooki and have been re-watching my favorite insulation videos. Hammock Gear just got done doing a nice sale that I had to take advantage of. I figured out (finally - after seeing your lovely assistant) how the gap in the Wooki isn't a problem! It's hard to notice when laying in it toasty warm, but every underquilt has a gap somewhere, it just seems like a smaller issue because it comes up and wraps around the hammock (wasting weight) with other designs. The Wooki is magical because anywhere you lay on the hammock there's down touching you and working effectively. The other underquilts just look like there's no gap, but in actuality there is - between the topquilt and the hammock and the underquilt there will always be a gap until your body is pressed against a specific area. The shockcord systems in other underquilts make them seem more sealed, but it's ineffective down unless it is actually touching the hammocker. The Wooki removes the unnecessary down and maximizes what is there. No matter where I lay on my Wooki I have a lofty barrier between myself and the cold without a whole bunch of extra down. Yes, there may be a loose spot where I'm not touching tightly, but wherever I roll it ends up closely enveloping me. I kind of wished upon a time that Warbonnet would add some shockcord to it to make the gap less prevalent, but I really don't know if there would be a tangible benefit.
That lil Warbonnet loose spot has never made me cold either. It just woks great. Just gotta be on it and have the hammock hung right to slide you in the sweet spot. Glad you're getting all warm.
Just picked up my new winter wookie this morning from the mail man. My new set up is almost complete. Blackbird xlc and winter top cover, xl wookie, Hammock Gear down hood, warbonnet superfly tarp w/snake skins. Will be ordering in a few days from jacks r better a Big Meadows zero deg. topquilt (overquilt?) to complete the new set up. I don't want to get into a contest with you about who's got the bigger "manhood", but... MY wookie is a Scandinavian temp, not some little girlie-boy zero deg. quilt for wimps!!!
@@shugemery yeah..... I have seen your trip reports of minus 40deg nights and you managed 2 or 3 nights in a row at that temp................... you sir, have vanquished me.......... I stand before you emasculated........
This is fantastic! I can't help wonder, though, why they don't just make it weight-bearing so it can be used as a hammock by itself? One less thing to haul around on your hike if the hammock and underquilt are a single unit. You could carry a regular hammock for warm weather hiking and carry this one for cool/cold weather hiking. Still, it's the best design I've seen for an underquilt. Well done, Warbonnet!
Misses the introduction off Grace until you walked around the hammock ... weird cold tinkling up the back off my neck I been wanting a warbonnet for so long, thanks for the tips on sleeping sides so basically just like in snowboarding you got "goofy or regular" or "left or right" but I realized I have to figure out which one i am Using an cheapo yukon outfitter and without a foot box I am sleeping left or right depending on the view ;) thanks for a great video like always Shug !
I was reading about this. I was curious about the shoulders. Seems to me.. that's my cold spot. My feet are usually good but my shoulders... get a chill, probably because I'm a mover and a shaker while I'm sleeping. This might be my new setup for next winter. I do like the removable bug net option. It's so buggy here in the summer.. the ENO Guardian works best for me. I got so eat'n up last year through the bottom of my hammock. I slipped of my pad I had as a barrier between me and the skeeters
I have 2 Warbonnet Blackbirds. I was a little skeptical about the design, but it seems to work good. So far all that I've used is quilts from Enlightened Equipment.
That's why I ordered the full length UQ from EE before they came out with this one. I just ordered a top quilt for my wife about 2 hours ago again from EE. I had a good test last weekend at Pictured Rocks.
I also have 2 Warbonnet blackbirds (one the XlC) and 2 WB 3/4 under quilts. I've noticed that the bungee draws at each end tend to be quite tight making the UQ very curved and not wanting to conform to the filled out shape of the hammock during the night, which means the UQ will often ride up one side of my body leaving my backside exposed. I learned to place a thin piece of shockcord on each end of the UQ and loop over the guide line so the UQ doesn't slip to one side during the night. This solved my problem. Admittedly, the coldest I've been is 18 degrees F, but my set up with the 3/4 UQ kept me toasty warm.( I have a Hammock Gear top quilt that has a snap around collar so it doesn't slip during the night.) Seems this new WB UQ design was made to address the slippage issue, but that's a lot of extra weight and space in my opinion. :)
i love my xlc & wookie only been down to 16 in mine with no problems, but when i purchased my set up i wanted to flip the sleeping potition and they said it would be an additional $85.00.
Thank you for the tutorial Shrug man from cat man do. Very cool set up now must save my pennies. Seek counseling on the dummy before you wife finds out....Spring is almost here yippy.
I would buy this setup in a second if it could do both left and right lay. Not sure I like being limited to one direction since I fidget in my hammock a lot. The XLC is OK both angles, just the Wookie is one-direction right? I wonder if he makes a straight-baffled wookie.. his website doesn't mention the diagonal issue
Hey Shug, Mark here from Hoobilly Indiana... So I have a Blackbird XLC right, now I'm looking at underquilts. Do I want to buy Wooki because of how the WBB XLC is made or can I look at other manufacturers? Thanks for you tootilage....
I`m a warm sleeper so I need the shelf for my clothes so I have neve taken the bugnet off. I`m using a uq from UK hammocks but I feel that I realy NEED th wookie ;)
Shug, if this going to be my one UQ, 20 deg - 3 season quilt...how do you adjust it for warmer weather? I saw another video where you loosen the tightness of the quilt for warmer weather. And in another video you actually set it up and then moved it out from underneath completely with the suggestion that in the middle of the night when it gets cold, you just reach down and pull it into place. Can you do these things with the wookie? I just got my first hammock, WBBB, and want to make sure I buy the best UQ. I appreciate your advice and you videos!
I tend to switch sides (switch my angle from left to right and vice versa) while sleeping in a hammock. I guess the Wooki wouldn't work for me, would it?
Great video, Shug! I think I'm going to start saving for one of those hammock/underquilt combos. Question for you. I'm 62, in decent shape, about 172 lbs. I live in Las Vegas and hike a lot on Mt Charleston where the hikes mostly start around 8,000 feet elevation. Thinking of the day hike gone wrong, could one improvise an underquilt from an emergency tarp such as the Grabber? This would be the time I'm not intending to stay overnight but circumstances are such that I have to. For example, on a summit hike I once wrenched my knee. Had that been worse I would have had to stay overnight and wait for help. I go solo a lot. This past Saturday daytime temps were about 38 degrees at noon around 9,300 feet. I expect it would be quite cold overnight, possibly under 20 degrees F. I'd value your opinion.
There was a guy names Garlington who stuffed leaves and duff in trash bags to insulate himself so yes...anything is possible. Get you through the night.
So steer me in a direction Shugmyster. I just ordered a Blackbird. Would you recommend a 0 Whooki or something different. Your opinion means a lot. I want to go the right way the first time. what'ya think...what'ya think? Shug-a-lug-a-lug-lug. Thanks
Well Thank'ya Shug. I guess my theory is you can't beat anyone at there own game. The Whooki was made as a direct fit for the Warbonnet so I'd suppose that it's no fuss'in feature is the big sell point and good down is down. When it comes, you'll all see it on my channel. Thanks for the reply and the little shove. Did't need much. Whaaa-Hooooo. Cheers Mate
Hello Shug. I am puzzled about Warbonnet under quilt weights from their chart. All their underquilt baffles are the same size; they just put more down in for the increased temperature ratings. I thought it was the loft in the baffles that trapped the air and made it warm. UPDATE: Warbonnet uses increasingly larger baffles as the temperature ratings change. They are very helpful with answering questions.
All I can say is I've never been cold in their gear. All that down in the winter ones lofts up well. Maybe you could ask them for a better explanation.....warbonnetoutdoors@gmail.com
@@TheFbiFilesRepeat Basically they have several temperature rated options, as we know. The 2 warmest options have a smaller baffle size and each option has more down in it. Then with the colder rated options, the baffle size is larger and those 2 options have progressively larger amounts of down in them, and finally their coldest rated under quilts have the larger sized baffles and stuffed accordingly. So in essence, if you order a 20 degree quilt stuffed with 3 ounces of over stuffing it really is the same as the 10 degree quilt, and the prices work out to show that. So, BOTH the amount of down AND the baffle size are part of the formula as to the temperature rating and not ONLY the baffle size.
so in a hammock you get max loft with the underquilt. Just curious how that would work on ground cuz I don't know my knots yet. Tho it might not matter since I'm in Florida. =oP
I have a chance to buy a 0 degree wookie regular, question is do you think I can make it work on my xlc? Also do you know if the quilt part that's sewn to the hammock material is the same as the xlc as far as length for head to toe coverage?
There is a 10' Wooki for the 10' Blackbird and an 11' Wooki for the XLC. Also need to know if you are head right or head left lay. Check their website.
Is that a “right lay” or “left lay” hammock? I sleep on my right side and don’t want the hammock material in my face. Which should I get? I would say “right lay” but some comments on other boards have me confused.
An any-lay hammock. Toke the net off and turn it over and you go from one side to the other. Check this video at 3:07 in.....ua-cam.com/video/I2S-f4AFuak/v-deo.html
Great vid i have not seen the wooki design before, should have been hairy to be called a wooki. Its an innovative design, i really dont like the whole eleastic suspension approach. The wooki is screaming knotty mod to me. Might see if i can work out a clip on clip off version of this that you could add to an standard underquilt, thinking caps on. Cheers.
The solution to the floppy sides of the Wooki is simple; a well adjusted under-quilt protector takes care of eliminating the shoulder/foot gap without undue compression or addition of tensioning modifications. I always carry (and often use) an UQP anyway.
Hey, Shug! I've been wondering about the bug net on the blackbird. When you're putting it back on, is it easy to tell which end is the head end? Thanks much!
Hey Shug, Question about an under quilt upgrade I want to do. I have an original warbonnet double blackbird, I have been looking at the Wooki since its made for a blackbird but have also looked at the incubator from Hammock gear, which looks like it will hug you better, although the set up for the Wooki seem easier, Not sure which one would work best for me. I know you have used all different brands of hammocks and make allot of Videos for other vendors so if you cant help me do to conflict of interest i understand. But knowing your crazy ole self you will give me your best answer. Thanks for your time sir.
They both work great. HG UQ may take a bit more to fit. The WB Wooki is easy and totally works. Many worry about it not hugging your shoulder but in my opinion it is just something new to folks. Your TQ covers your shoulder and the Wooki has proven itself to me. Though so has my HG UQs so you wave a win/win situation. The Wooki has no shockcord pressing against you.
@@shugemery Thanks for the speedy reply, think I will go with the wooki, looks easier to set up and packs small. Plus HG is back ordered till 2019 so I can get my wooki on sooner this year.... THX again and keep on doing whatcha like !!!!!
Two different hammocks......ua-cam.com/video/0jU8mzz3xJk/v-deo.html and ua-cam.com/video/l1FVlLqVAwM/v-deo.html Both comfortable. WB has a shelf. Check them out.
Never tried the Dutchware Chameleon, but the WB Blackbird is amazing. I get a full night's rest, lay very flat, and love it more than my own bed. Hope that helps. lol
hey Shug, thanks for the vids, the info and the laughs . I never hear of peeps speaking about an under quilt made from materials other than down . if someone was working w near nothing could they fabricate or modify something to go under that would keep them warm into the low thirties ? I am not THAT concerned about weight in this case . be cool .
search for a "submariners laundry bag" they are still made by industries for the blind and are sold for low cost less than 10 bucks last time I looked. With a simple ridge line it will make an great place to hang it above your head . a place to house incidentals that you want to use while in the hammock.
Shug, i notice out of all your videos ,you dont ' own a Clarke hammock. So i was wondering what your thoughts were on the Clarke.Cheers from across the pond.
Droisntns word is yes, on hammock forums, perhaps with some modification to the end with the rubber band and clip as shut said in the video. XL wooki for 11 foot, regular wooki for 10 foot. Personally waiting on some more info on this before I pull the trigger on a Dutch Chameleon, myself.
It will but a lot of folks have to adjust the footend of the Wooki with some shock cord to make it a bit longer or shorter so it will stay right up against the hammock.
watched this video last night and had a dream I was setting this up in my backyard and caught someone stealing it off my hammock stand...i sicked my dog on the guy but he hopped the fence and was gone hahaha (I don't live in a very nice area) none the less I'm sick with the flu and taking some different meds so I'm sure that played a part. just thought I would share that bit of randomness.
My 0 Wooki arrived last week, very happy with it, and Brandon is one affable hombre, asked him to put a rush on it and it arrived a week and a half early. Customer service I can get accustomed to. Thanks for the vid Shug, you are indeed the wise man of hammocking.

Perfect.
Thank you for also showing the Wooki packed in the stuff sack...something they don't have on the warbonnet site.

I like the sewn angle, no elastic and no gap in extra fabric to deflect the wind.

To fiddle or not to fiddle, that is the question. I just bought a Blackbird XLC. Have been using it with no bottom insulation at all, but have only been out when it's warm. I'm shopping under quilts. The Wookie looks like the ultimate great choice to mate with this hammock. Pretty fiddle free to get it right on a Warbonnet hammock but you can went it by loosening the footend rubber or adding shock cord to it an inch or two. Or you can slide it to the side too venting it......ua-cam.com/video/FMhYRJ9dxtA/v-deo.html

Whatever keeps you warm and happy I say!
inndeed , sir ! but....if I was up in minnestoa or anywhere near where you are.....full wooki , and western goose down....for certain with the blackbirds of course
.
Great informative video! After years of hammock camping,"thanks to you ", it all makes sence now! Well, everything but the manikin, weird? LOL!
Does not everyone own a mannequin?
Enjoy...these might give some insight....ua-cam.com/users/results?search_query=underquilt+from+comforter
shugemery : Well I got my cheap rigged up quilt all situated.
At a certain temperature and wind-speed it will certainly be worth it's two-pound weight again, but I need to find that point.
looks like a wonderful design. thank you.
It is a right goodie.
Good stuff! I have not yet seen this product and really like it. Thanks!
It really is nice.
Great video! I have one and love it!
Good to hear.
We can talk more "manhood" when you go camping in it in minus 20º....OK? Haaaa
I think versatility. And...many folks already have the BlackBird but not the Wooki. They can add the Wooki. My quess.
swtsoph I imagine he didn't want to copy the Bonefire gear whisper hammock.
That makes sense.
I never heard of the Bonefire gear whisper hammock. I'll take a look - thanks.
I have seen JustJeff, Strung Out and JerryW and WV Dave make insulated hammock so it is nothing new.
Grace looks so.... gracefull
She is stiff as a board.
Misses the introduction off Grace until you walked around the hammock ... weird cold tinkling up the back off my neck
I been wanting a warbonnet for so long, thanks for the tips on sleeping sides so basically just like in snowboarding you got "goofy or regular" or "left or right" but I realized I have to figure out which one i am
Using an cheapo yukon outfitter and without a foot box I am sleeping left or right depending on the view ;)
thanks for a great video like always Shug !
Yessir...choices...choices!
I had no problem with my shoulders. TQ covers them anyways. I was pleasantly surprised.
***** you answered it perfectly in the presentation. Thanks Shug! Carry on!
would be simple add a little Velcro square to the UQ and match square to hammock... ?
I have 2 Warbonnet Blackbirds. I was a little skeptical about the design, but it seems to work good. So far all that I've used is quilts from Enlightened Equipment.
Those will do the trick! Warbonnet never had a full length for their gathered end hammocks and he is trying to simplify the process. UQs perplex many.
This may give some insight....ua-cam.com/video/D9N3KkV5Zf4/v-deo.html
Yeah...I see they have ties for those flops on the new videos. Weather they are on my used-but-nice XLC...I will have to see.
ok your a riot! thanks for a fun video and very informative.
Y'elcome and thankee.
Is Grace seeing anyone? Does she have a phone number? A sister, perhaps?
I'm so lonely.
She used to be a Gap mannequin...then K Mart. She is twice divorced and currently on parole.
Her sister is a cardboard cut out at FedEx.
Awww, shucks!
I do really well with the ladies in prison, but once they're out on parole, not so much.
But I thank you kindly, amigo.
Is this Lars from Lars and the Real Girl. That Ryan Goslings best movie by far
Love your videos
Thankee.
Great review now I will have to have one well done, Thanks
Whooooo Buddy
very informative and entertaining...

hope to see more of grace i used to go out with her sister plastic pauline but she was the quiet one
She is very good at planking.....
Thanks, perfect timing. I have a Blackbird but being 6'2'' I am thinking of the XLC with a Wookie, thoughts would be appreciated.
I am 6'.
Those were my thoughts on video.
Any other...maybe check with Warbonnet.
I don't know if I'm mistaken, but I've never seen a Shug video featuring the Nube Shelter system?? Always love some tarp talk!
I don't own one but maybe down the road I will. Thanks.
👍🏼 Roger that, over and out.
great vid! love my wbbb with wooki attached. Waiting for your "raven" review, haha!
Raven...may be in bug season. So June perhaps.
i love my xlc & wookie only been down to 16 in mine with no problems, but when i purchased my set up i wanted to flip the sleeping potition and they said it would be an additional $85.00.
Yes...use lefty lovers pay the piper!
Thank you for the tutorial Shrug man from cat man do. Very cool set up now must save my pennies. Seek counseling on the dummy before you wife finds out....Spring is almost here yippy.
Grace seems kinda quiet.
She is reticent.
LOL
I for one appreciate Shug involving his girlfriend in his videos. They obviously have a great relationship.
lol
gotta watch those cold woodies
Thx shug been watching the load out videos
Aye!
I regular UQ may do you better then.
He make the Yeti partial UQ straight baffle.
Love my XLC and WOOKI
Me too....
Hey Shug, Mark here from Hoobilly Indiana... So I have a Blackbird XLC right, now I'm looking at underquilts. Do I want to buy Wooki because of how the WBB XLC is made or can I look at other manufacturers? Thanks for you tootilage....
Any good UQ will work. But the Wooki is made for the Warbonnet and is pretty hassle free. I love mine.
I need a woman like Grace who wont give me any grief when I say I'm going hiking.. LOL
I`m a warm sleeper so I need the shelf for my clothes so I have neve taken the bugnet off. I`m using a uq from UK hammocks but I feel that I realy NEED th wookie ;)
I usually leave mine on too. Love the shelf!
Do you use a single or double hammock Shug? I use a double and It's great having so much room.. Thanks for the great vids.
I prefer a single.
NICE ... VERY NICE!
It very much is. Different. Hope your well.
You would have to loosen the suspension at the foot end. I have not tried it but heard some have,
I tend to switch sides (switch my angle from left to right and vice versa) while sleeping in a hammock. I guess the Wooki wouldn't work for me, would it?
May not. It is set for one direction.
Scroll down to Garlington insulator on here....www.tothewoods.net/HammockCampingWarm.html
@@shugemery Thanks... good idea. Thanks for the link!
So steer me in a direction Shugmyster. I just ordered a Blackbird. Would you recommend a 0 Whooki or something different. Your opinion means a lot. I want to go the right way the first time. what'ya think...what'ya think? Shug-a-lug-a-lug-lug. Thanks
Not had enough time on my Wooki to say for sure but it sure works. All UQs are good if you use them properly. Trust your gut.
@@shugemery Thanks, I did ask them and they were VERY helpful as usual.
@@jlhgrace8284 please tell us what they said
@@TheFbiFilesRepeat Basically they have several temperature rated options, as we know.
=oP
It would not be as effective as in the air...loss of loft underneath the body.
Shug, is there an air gap between the bottom of the XLC and the Wookie or is it touching when you are laying in the hammock?
There is not.
Shug when we going to see more overnight hikes again ? We sure do enjoy them
Coupla weeks after my work tour.
Shug could you show us the way you pack your pack for a thru hike sometime
I'm going to try and make my own franken-underquilt out if anything I can sow together. What should I make it out of?
Search right here on You Tube. "Homemade Underquilts". You'll find what your looking for.
Thanks Shug, great overview as always. I am torn now between warbonnet xlc and chameleon. Any thoughts on this pros cons etc
They are two different hammocks. Both comfy. WB has a shelf and bugnet way up off face. I do have videos on both.
ua-cam.com/play/PLahaAdtfX9ZLEzMl8R4dbEiL-K3lJksKA.html
Is that a “right lay” or “left lay” hammock? I sleep on my right side and don’t want the hammock material in my face. Which should I get? I would say “right lay” but some comments on other boards have me confused.
An any-lay hammock. Toke the net off and turn it over and you go from one side to the other.
Check this video at 3:07 in.....ua-cam.com/video/I2S-f4AFuak/v-deo.html
@@shugemery Thanks so much for the quick reply!!! Keep up the good work on the videos.
Cheers.
You could add the knotty. Not sure you need it but it would not hurt anything.
Hey Shug - how do you clean and store all your down so they last well ? Is there a special rack in Shugtopia where you hang everything ?
Mine hangs on a rack in my Nut-Hut. I wash with REI down wash once a year.
The solution to the floppy sides of the Wooki is simple; a well adjusted under-quilt protector takes care of eliminating the shoulder/foot gap without undue compression or addition of tensioning modifications. I always carry (and often use) an UQP anyway.
I look forward to using mine more when it gets way cold.
Your assistant "Grace" is a real "chatty Cathy".
Hey....I do all the chatting!
Hey, Shug! I've been wondering about the bug net on the blackbird. When you're putting it back on, is it easy to tell which end is the head end? Thanks much!
Yes...very easy.
Also, you would know by shelf fabric and pull outs....ua-cam.com/video/CRoO_hx33Cg/v-deo.html
I know you have used all different brands of hammocks and make allot of Videos for other vendors so if you cant help me do to conflict of
interest i understand.
Hi shug i have a question what you have for your Face or your had when you sleeping in Winter with a quillt?
hoods, beanies, balaclava, face mask...weather depending...flic.kr/p/iMY19V
shugemery so you make the Mask by yoursalf ?
9 degrees? Does the under quilt have to go on the outside of the hammock? Thanks for your information.
Yes....thus the name UNDERQuilt! You would lose the warmth were it in the hammock to to down compression.
how would you compare the warbonnet blackbird with the dutchware chameleon? how flat can you lay is the bigger question.
Two different hammocks......ua-cam.com/video/0jU8mzz3xJk/v-deo.html

Never tried the Dutchware Chameleon, but the WB Blackbird is amazing. I get a full night's rest, lay very flat, and love it more than my own bed. Hope that helps. lol
Shug, how flat can you lay in the Chameleon compare to the Blackbird?
Victor von Doom He has done a video for both mate, search Shug and Chameleon.
hey Shug, thanks for the vids, the info and the laughs . I never hear of peeps speaking about an under quilt made from materials other than down . if someone was working w near nothing could they fabricate or modify something to go under that would keep them warm into the low thirties ? I am not THAT concerned about weight in this case . be cool .
Some use synthetic, some use duck down. Someone use cattails. Really
Well, darn clever!
Yessir!
can you get a regular underquilt to work with the blackbird or other asym hammocks?
For sure you can.....ua-cam.com/play/PLahaAdtfX9ZKzSYSBm3mBYSPGHjdyGqsL.html
search for a "submariners laundry bag" they are still made by industries for the blind and are sold for low cost less than 10 bucks last time I looked. With a simple ridge line it will make an great place to hang it above your head . a place to house incidentals that you want to use while in the hammock.
The Warbonnet XLC has a sweet shelf! I'll look up that bag.
Could u use it as a hammock by itself?
Nope. It is not made with that kind of strength. Check this rig....superiorgear.com/product/superior-hammock
It might be cool to use a "knotty-mod" on the underquilt to take out any slack on the sides...
You could. Some have. I will just leave mine as is.
Great review brother! If I could only get 1 UQ for 3 season would you say this is a good choice?
Sure would be especially if your using a Warbonnet hammock.

Has anyone ever thought of sewing the underquilt directly to the hammock? If so how did it work out?
Yes....shellhammocks.com
and www.bonefiregear.com
Will this work with other manufacturers hammocks or just Warbonnet?
Droisntns word is yes, on hammock forums, perhaps with some modification to the end with the rubber band and clip as shut said in the video. XL wooki for 11 foot, regular wooki for 10 foot. Personally waiting on some more info on this before I pull the trigger on a Dutch Chameleon, myself.
You can but may have to retrofit.
It will fit the Chameleon but the rubber band has to be loosened.
Built fer war bonnet, but will it slip ona dutchware?
It will but a lot of folks have to adjust the footend of the Wooki with some shock cord to make it a bit longer or shorter so it will stay right up against the hammock.
@@shugemery simple nuff.good knowin.thanks shug.
why isn't the Wokie just made in a heavier material to completely replace the hammock?
