Best hike yet! The Channels in Virginia/Trail Review

- My favorite hike so far! The Great Channels of Virginia did not disappoint. It's 3 miles up (and I do mean UP) to the channels and 3 miles back. Beautiful scenery every step of the way after you leave the gravel road. *Note the parking lot has 10 numbered spaces, parking anywhere else will get your towed. I was there at 830am and it was about 1/2 full by the time I packed up to hike.
Shout out to Laurie and Rick. Just so you don't think we were being scared of a tiny slide down at the summit, we had to slide down on the right spot. The other side dropped out of sight so it made us a little nervous! I am very happy to have met them and appreciated them offering to help me along so I could come to view the summit with them.
Surprisingly, I had service until I entered the Channels.

Very cool looking place but how the heck do you not get lost in there ? I have a bum knee and just had a hip replacement but I am going to give it a go in the fall. ( I go solo tent camping for a few days every year) Thank you for sharing your experience !
What an amazing hike through those rocks...yes, it does look a little scary...like they could come crashing down at any time...but they have probably been that way for many decades...thanks for taking us along...
As long as there wasn't an earthquake while traveling through! They were amazing!
The channels are the result of hundreds of thousands of years of erosion. Many millennia would fit much better than decades! Think ice age old!
You rock!! What an amazing hike.
My favorite so far!
That really was a cool trail, glad you had a bit of help across the ravine
I enjoy meeting people on the trail.
Crystal, were there arrows or signs in the Channels to direct you? Or was the path through them pretty obvious?
No. They don't allow canoeing in the mill pond for the public. We had the guide taking us through there and she was our leader. It would be nice to make it a marked trail and let people go on. There is a 10 foot dam drop onto concrete. I think that has something to do with it that they are afraid people will try to go down it or get too close to it.
sorry about that. I thought you were talking about my canoe trip. I used alltrails.com. There were arrows but that part I show to go through the gate is very confusing. People continue to follow the large road path but you must go through the gate straight ahead and not curve with the large path. It narrows there and once you get to the closed gate, you will see the sign that says to continue that way. That was the only place I felt confused in the entire trip. Also when you get to the tower, walk straight through it (or around it but go to the other side), the trail picks up there.
Thank you, Crystal. I guess I am wondering if it it just a steep descent to get into Channels, a butt crawl, etc. We hike pretty often. I will keep searching. Thanks, again!!
There is only one spot they may require ask fours just to get up but no, really you'll be able to do it. Gradual incline that never stops till you get to the top ..3 miles uphill. Nice trail. It's not hard if you have been hiking and can stop for breaks. No ropes needed or anything extreme. You can do it. The good news is coming down is a joy! All downhill!
Ps. I videoed that spot and did it with a camera in one hand so seriously you can do it. It's right before the tower and your so excited to see the tower, you'll get right up those rocks!
Did you do this alone? I may have asked too soon because the video only just started. 😁
Yes. I do a lot of hikes alone unless someone asks to go with me. I have no issues hiking alone and actually look forward to my time alone. I met some folks at the channels save walked back with them for the conversation.
Great for you!!! Are you planning on documenting your build. Is it a Nissan 2500 NV? Where are you placing your bed?
@@ATravelingAddictSolo Hey there!! I think this response was for someone else. I WISH I could build my own van camper!!! 😁😁
@@ATravelingAddictSolo I like to hike alone as well, but I don't typically hike at places where I might be chased by mountain lions! 😂
hey! Doing a give away if you are interested. check out the info on last video.
Just subbed your channel to support another women UA-camr and hiker out there. Thanks for taking us along. I plan to so this hike soon and your video was great showing what the trail & channels look like.
Thanks for watching and your kind words. I'll come visit you this evening and check out your adventures!
@@ATravelingAddictSolo oh cool, thanks a bunch!
My grandson says it's his favorite hike too. It is a really cool place and I'm headed back up there in a few weeks.
Yes! So far to date... still my favorite. Your grandson has great taste! LOL
Such a wonderful place! Thanks for sharing your journey!
Thanks for coming by and watching!
ps. .Thanks for the sub!
Stupid question... do they have handicap parking there?
It's just a pull in off the side of the road. Only a handful of parking spots and if they are full, you can't stop there. The answer... not officially (I don't remember seeing one), but it's all just dirt off the side of the road. type parking lot.
Really nice hike!! Beautiful video 👍shout out to fellow hikers that helped you❤️ Thanks 🙏 for sharing
I hike solo but it's fun to meet people on the trail!
This looks awesome! I live in the northern Shenandoah area and all the cool rock formations & stuff seem to always be considerably south ☹️
This was a favorite number 1 hike I've done so far!
Such millipedes house that I have not seen since Yosemite 1968 the year we moved there camping in a similar place to your channel woke up in the middle of the night found millipedes like the orange striped one had come to join us during the night we got out of there as far as I know they are harmless I did not want to share my sleeping bag with them UGGNice photography by the way congratulations
Awesome video, you are definitely getting better and better! Too bad you didn't have a recording of a bear or Mountain Lion to play while you were in the depths of the channels!! 😜😇😗
yea! could you imagine the panic.. because voices echo through there and you don't know where anyone really is. Or one at the top growling down looking at you! Thank you for the encouragement. I remembered the 4 second rule the best I could in the video!
Great content!
Thanks. It was a blast hiking there!
Congratulations on this hike. That was quite the adventure. Great job. Those slot canyon were really cool. Thanks for sharing. 👍😃
It was my favorite so far! Thanks for watching.
Wow, beautiful!
It was amazing!
Nice vlog. Thanks my new friend. Stay connected. Full support #150
Thank you 👍
Crystal, this was a beautiful, I was holding my breath at times. The rock formations are beautiful. Were you belly crawling to navigate some of the passages? “Magnificent” is the right description, thank you!!!
more like butt scooting! Holding my belly in to get between the crevices on some... the noise with me shuffling through the cracks was my backpack. I had taken it off and still, it was scratching the sides!
Thats a long ways from where I am, do you live up there or did you spend the night up there. I really would love to go there and on up to Spruce Knob in WV. Its thehighest point in WV. has a nice tower you can see from. Maybe in November but snow is very likely! Do you camp? We could do a collaboration?!
No.. I got up at 3am to get there before the crowd. It was 4 hours from me. I do tent camp right now. I am searching for my high top conversion van to make my home!
Wow..looks amazing😊
It really was!
