Things I learned today: 1) All the documentaries I watch still leave gaps in my football history knowledge because I didn't grow up around it 2) Paul Gascoigne has more simps than I do
Sir Alex Ferguson recently said Gazza was the one player he would have loved to manage across his entire career, so that's a decent measure of how great he could have been
Poor guy probably had severe PTSD aswell as other major mental health issues from his childhood that never went untreated also which would've effected his decisions regarding his career/life
I don't think going to rangers were a poor career choice. At that point rangers were competing and beating some of the best teams in Europe - 2 years earlier only missing out on champions League final on goal difference. His advisors also told him being in Scotland would assist keeping him away from English media which hoped would be better for his mental health
I'm pretty sure the "Wonderkid" media description is based on the player's current ability at a young age. A bunch of us a few years ago in the Football Manager Slack channel sat down and sorta figured that out. Also, Gazza was a monster.
That Gascoigne conversation! Sir Alex Ferguson was recently asked to name one player he wished he had got to manage and Gascoigne was his answer. Think of all the other players he could have named, and he named Gascoigne.
If Gascoigne was playing now, he would be a top 10 player of the world at least. That should show he was far better than the Scotsman thinks. Also I am not English, not biased opinion. But he probably was more infamous in the media as a cult guy who struggled a lot with addictions.
I assume that after this a certain somebody is just going to be sent the clip of Gazza scoring against Scotland at Euro '96 on social media for the next week or so.
As someone who's currently doing a save with the editor enabled to test how to do this, you should not have ignored the estimated transfer cost. It's the most helpful thing for guessing potential. The AI coaches know what they have, and if he's good, they won't want to sell (or will demand far more).
Just FYI I got a 196 potential newgen from Atlético de Madrid. Although his potential was high, Atleti allowed him to go on trial with me which he accepted too. The minute he arrived his estimated transfer cost was 58 million euros. I approached him to sign right away. However, after signing his cost when down to 5 million euros. So yes, transfer cost is a good indicator but only when you first get them on trial. After they are under contract it's not that relevant anymore.
paul gascoigne is an england legend. whos loved by most of us fans. think of him as the black sheep. no one wanted him his first tourny. untill he showd up and ripped the tournament to peices. he also scored one of the best enland goals ever to be scored on a live stage. against scotland aswell. hense the legend is born. love your content man. stay safe 😷😷
The vitriol about the Gazza comment tells more about English football history than Zealand’s personal knowledge. It was like living through the overhyped Beckham years. More telling of the Gazza years were the legends that were on other nations teams at the time, and England had Gazza (or Pazza as Italians called him) to force a narrative on. He was very good when on, but he was erratic to the extreme. Couldn’t rely on hi and tactically he was a mess. If you could live with a player who was undisciplined and untrustworthy for moments of magic, great! A more modern version of Gazza is Antonio Cassano. Brilliant, completely crazy and completely unreliable tactically or otherwise. Every coach has dreamed of “fixing” the broken brain to get a great player but then inevitably realize that the brain is more important than the feet, and give up. Kind of sad, but it’s the lhouse” the player builds to live in.
I'm fairly certain that the "Wonderkid" description can only be given at a certain age. I've never seen a wonderkid that was below 17 years old. Prior to that I always see some other description.
