  • With a price tag of just over $100 million, the F-35B from Lockheed Martin is equipped with the most powerful engine of any jet in the world, as well as the most advanced sensor suite of any fighter jet in history. The Marine Corps Air Station in Beaufort, South Carolina, is the sole location for the training required to fly this unique plane. This training is focused on teaching pilots how to perform short-distance takeoffs and how to land the plane vertically like a helicopter. Pilots also learn to master technology and utilize gear unique to the jet. In March, Insider was granted exclusive access to the Air Station, where we observed these pilots in training.

you do realise how difficult the transformation process is? Having that manually done is asking for trouble, and just coz there are more complex tasks automated doesn’t reduce the quality of pilot, it’s there to make the job easier on them so that they can shift their focus onto other more important things, if anything this allows there to be more skilled pilots in the seat

We must ALWAYS give our Marines the best. My cousin, who severed in Vietnam, told me that his army unit made the decision that if they had to wait 5 min. for Air Force ground support or 20 for US Marine Corp ground support they would ALWAYS wait for Marine Corp ground support. He told me that the Air Force would fly over at the safest altitude and drop weapons in the area, they would never come low with guns. The Marine Corp however would come in at tree top and drop exactly where they were asked to and then they would loiter on station using guns until they were empty. The Marine Corp is who you want in a "Danger Close" situation.

This pilot may says he just pushes a button, but he not telling you about the 100 decisions a minute he needs to make on any sortie and in the battle field if any one of those decisions were wrong it could result in serious consequences including death. Fifth Gen fighters is about creating an integrated battle field, linking all the assets together. The more automated and easy they can make the aircraft, the more the pilot can focus on his job which is to destroy enemy assets. In flight school the easy part is learning to fly the plane, most people could do that, the hard part is using the plane as a weapon and that's why its so hard to make the cut as a fighter pilot and why they put so much pressure on during training, even cutting good pilots, that don-t respond to the pressure. They don't want pilots to fly the plane they want a person who can operate an airborne weapon system under extreme condition including risk of death, while remaining calm and cognitive. Also its good to see, some of the more risky parts of a STOL aircraft is now automated, the Harrier was notoriously difficult to fly, with not a great safety record although its proved its worth in the Falkland's war.

Yes, I know, I prefer also to use the autpilot to precisely follow the localiser and glideslope while concentrating on power and IAS during an ILS approach and waiting for visibility to appear before reaching the minimums.
But I digress, You are right, it is very difficult to even estimate vertical speed looking ouside and maintain accurate vertical position over a location without accurate cues.
No help from non existing ground effect, as present during landing a helicopter.
What I was thinking is a future adaptation to civil aviation, because there, the vast majority of accidents happen during the take off and landing phases. Automating separately a short take off, climb, and esprecially to introduce automated vertical landing is, the progress I am referring to.
Tried and proven with the F-35B, the key justification words.
That is a game changer : short runways, except for emergencies, locally better access possible, with electric, quiet vertical lift used.

All they really have to do is just push a button to get the engine to turn down and thrust to get the plane in the air. Compare that with the Harrier where you are constant using levers, and switches to get the plane vertical takeoff. The F-35B and it's electronics have made it so much easier for pilots.

I talked to 2 Harrier jet pilots at an air show, back in 1995. They were very smart, sharp, and highly educated. That hasn't changed much now. The planes are more expensive, though. The Marines don't trust a piece of machinery that costly to just any kid who wants to be a fighter pilot. I wanted to be one of those guys, when I was growing up. I realized that I wasn't made of "the right stuff" early on. You really do need to be good, or you could end up plowed deep somewhere, at 1200 mph.
