How Marines Test Hand-To-Hand Combat Skills At Boot Camp

- We got an inside look at how United States Marine Corps recruits are trained to fight each other in hand-to-hand combat basic training. Male and female recruits, separated by gender, face off in intense boxing matches supervised by their drill instructors. According to Capt. James Cimino, the training is intended to prepare Marines to defend themselves in combat when they no longer have the option of using one of their weapons. Senior video correspondent Graham Flanagan spent four days at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in Parris Island, SC, where he observed various stages of training.

🤣 can you even call that a rnc? Yeeezus what a freakshow!
It looked more like a poor attempt at a neck crank
That was more of a fulcrum crank.
Rnc doesn't have to be grabbing ur Bicep and cracking although that's the best way.
That looks like fulcrum choke not really an RNC though right?
That’s a fulcrum choke but idk if I could finish it in that position or naw
Lmao, if someone with 6 months of boxing training was tossed into there, they would literally dance on these boys.
yeah definitely as soon as these boys rank up after actual combat trainings tables will turn
Also if u are an army recruit it doesnt mean u couldn't train boxing before even trying to join army
My 15 year old son has been training with us since he was 7 and I'd bet my house he could spark any one of those boys. Their form is scary bad(Ps semi pro boxer means amateur and that means anyone pretty much), but then again you don't need good form if you just shoot them.

@@serialcarpens290 Do they only let you box or also let you throw elbows and knees like a kickboxing match? Or fists only?
Jesus is a marine?
To be effective in martial arts, you have to train and practice all. The. Time. You cannot learn shit in a “boot camp”.
Facts
I spent 8 months in Afghanistan and rolled many times with military personnel. Unless they trained BJJ elsewhere their skills were basic at best. Great folks and I loved teaching them how to be better.
BJJ won’t matter when you are fighting for your life on the battle field. My opponent will feel my dagger once I get close enough. He won’t have time to remember his BJJ when I puncture his vital organs
As a former fighter and a Marine myself, I can understand why people would think going just to the body is soft. But trust me, it isn’t. While head shots are def more realistic training wise, body shots test your will and your heart waaaay more than head shots. When you get domed in the head and it’s a good shot, you don’t even really know where you are. Get hit harder and it’s just like going to sleep. You get knocked out and that’s it. But you catch a hard a hard shot to the body? Not only are you still conscious, barely able to breath, with your legs feeling like they’re about to collapse beneath you and it takes every ounce of willpower not to go down, but your opponent now sees that you’re hurt, and it’s almost like he gets his second wind, because he sees you’re almost finished. Taking a good body shot to the liver or solar plexus and still pushing yourself to fight back is one of the hardest things mentally when it comes to fighting. Trust me.
Ngl at lot of these guys don’t look like they know how to fight
Tough internet guy
They don't. It's just a bunch of kids fresh out of high school.

@@hr4f774 well ya if you are a kickboxer Thats different but someone normal like me will get our ass kicked
In boot camp you will rarely be able to execute any of the moves you were taught in MCMAPS because there’s literally no time for you to use them unless your in a scripted body sparring match. In the military you’ll rarely use your hand to hand combat skills because hand to hand combat is extremely rare so you have to substitute it with training yourself 24/7 so it becomes muscle memorized
And you still end up shot rather than beaten.........
They should all learn basic boxing...
They should learn how to win.
Don't matter if it's with their human arms or with their firearms, winning is number one. Boxing doesn't matter if you're trying to win. Maybe a rudimentary knowledge of martial arts would help but not boxing alone.

It’s changed a lot since I went through Bootcamp at Paris island. I came in with my friend mike on the buddy program and we both had boxing experience. My friend mike actually was in the Golden gloves tournament In Phily. Most of the recruits had no experience and their was little time to work on Martial arts or Boxing in boot camp. So it is pretty dangerous to put a kid wit X- amount of years of training with one that had next to none. We actually were one of the last to hit to the head because we had a kid in our platoon that got messed up. We found out a year or so after we got out. He had some fluid on the Brain from getting hit. So I think what their doing is smart. If you can hit to the Body you can easily hit someone in the face

I have a training partner joining the marines soon and he is a absolute killer on the feet. We do Muay Thai and his technique is absolutely beautiful and scary at the same time. Don’t know much about his grappling but I know he’s a blue belt in Jui Jitsu.
I think he’ll fit right in
I remember my first elementary school fight this takes me back.
She should give herself more credit, it’s not an “unfair” advantage, its just an advantage, shes more prepared to face the enemy. In war the enemy might have the advantage , so it’s the marines duty to make odds favor themselves.
It seems like they’re doing this to build their confidence more than anything else.
Yep.. confidence is everything
Pretty much. They're also fatigued and just can't wait to graduate bootcamp and get the hell out of there but they also like to brag to civilians that they know a thing or two about fighting after bootcamp, even tho they're only tan belts (we have a belt system and black is highest you can go until you're a combat instructor and get red tabs). Truth be told, in my experience I didn't actually know how to throw kicks or be a proficient striker (since MCMAP when I was in the Marines was mostly ground and grappling) until 2 years later when I was deployed and watched UA-cam videos for Muay Thai and MMA, had to practice on an old punching bag everyday for 2 hrs for several months to get results (at least for me).
@@acanthafiore Ik it’s a façade. Most marines can’t fight lmfao
@@DrOrr unless they were MP Marines, then they probably get more training.
This is not a test of their skill, but of their will.
So is this more to build up the fighting spirit and morale, and just a quick crash course and concept of their martial arts training?
My old man was a British paratrooper and during his selection process they had a thing called milling. Very much like what you just saw except no body armour, no head gear and no defensive actions allowed. It was full on total attack. He said he was paired with another lad his height, but much younger, (He was 35). The other lad had youth and enthusiasm. Dad had age and treachery. They both knocked each other down twice and were the only pair to score maximum points.
I think this is more about building combativeness and comfort with impact than it is a template for actual h2h fighting. It probably also needs to allow for people with a wide range of backgrounds and abilities.

"Boxing is the sport of punching, MMA is the sport of fighting"

@@williamweisenburg5919 ehh, boxing is very important to MMA but there's more to it. Boxing is the art of positioning, as is wrestling, but in one you punch and in the other you control and manipulate a person's body. Both of these are vital skills to MMA. For any marines out there reading this, how was this portion of boot camp for you?
Mostly everyone is nervous. Not a fear of fighting, but rather a fear of pissing off your drill instructor.
Unlike pretty much everything else in boot camp, this is one time that all eyes are on you. Not only are your DIs glaring down at you, but so are DIs from other platoons (i. e. Your opponents instructors), as well as the MCMAP instructors. DIs hate getting shown up by other DIs, so if you lose, you will pay.
To DIs, a 'win' is all about which platoon causes the most harm. So many platoons DIs offer secret rewards to their recruits for violence. That would be fine, but most rewards involve using unauthorized moves against the head. The MCMAP instructors (who know nothing about these rewards) are in charge in these events and they give stern warnings about foul play. However, no recruit would go against their own drill instructors, plus it's a chance to prove yourself and your allegiance to your Senior DI (sounds weird saying that now, but boot camp is a strange time..) Anyways, as soon as you do something illegal, MCMAP instructors take your ass to the ground fast lol. Then they give you a watered down ass chewing while your DIs smirk.
My platoons rewards were 1. Extra chow 1 meal for knocking out a mouthpiece, 2. Cheeseburger from McDonald's for knocking off a helmet, 3. No duty for 5 days for drawing blood, and 4. A 5 minute supervised call home if you knocked someone out. I think a total of maybe 7 or 8 recruits in my platoon got something. On the other hand, several recruits started the fight by lunging for a 1 hit KO, only to get leveled themselves lol.
As a Boxer: cringe
The point of this is not to make Boxers out of them, the point is to (as the D.I. said) get them out of their comfort zone. Of course that they are not gonna be pro boxers after a few hours of training.. Better use your head next time.

This boot camp looks fun for me!!!
All the people docking on the fighting form of these recruits, it's designed to be the bare minimum, it's designed to instill the will and ability to fight in an 18 year old kid that may has never even thrown a punch. It's designed this way becuase the reality is our country has historically sent kids to combat right after boot camp. The Korean War is a prime example. Marines conducted boot camp on ships on the way to war in certain circumstances. Up to the point of these sparring matches these recruits are pushed to their limits far beforehand. Unless you've been there then you don't know. I have been there and even learned something new in this video. Upon my sparring match I was declared winner. I passed through the winners door and remember noticing recruits over in a sand pit getting smoked thinking to myself oh its a normal day I wonder what they did wrong. Your pushed to a point there where you barely understand what's going on. You only know you need to keep pushing, and recruit training is only the beginning.
I’m not a soldier but I can imagine, if you gotta use your hands or knife in a real war, your in a BAAD situation.
