  • This was shown on PBS when I was a very little and contributed to my style of humor and gave me a lot of my material. I missed the first 15 minutes and edited out the telethon section in the middle.

I'm now seventy and remember as a child of seven laughing at the seagulls routines and other funny stuff he did and impersonating him. May God grant him peace. Truly great comedians are a rare breed.

I was working the front desk at the Holiday Inn in Carbondale, IL. I knew he was due to check in, but he sneaked up on me. I looked up and saw the biggest greenest cigar held in the huge smile of the man himself. When a celebrity checks in in person you always try to get it done asap. So I was fast. He stood at the desk for at least an hour giving me the gifts of his stories. I asked if this story was true, or a skit. He replied it was true. It's time for the next generation to meet the genius of Mr. Red Skelton.

I saw him in the 1990's in a two hour concert, one joke after another! No cue cards, no scripts, just all from his heart. An amazing performance for a man in his 80's. The two hours was simply, too short! God Bless you Red. RIP ✝🙏

I had the pure by chance opportunity to meet Red in a hotel lobby one Saturday afternoon in New York City in 1971. He was just as cordial and funny. We talked a good two or three minutes, he gave me his autograph, I couldn’t believe it. Growing up we watched him all the time. Needless to say , a super highlight of my short trip to New York. I will NEVER forget it. These videos are so awesome. RIP , RED

Johnny Carson interviewed Red back in the 80s and Red said he only slept about 3 hours a night. He spent his nights painting clowns on canvas. Some of them were displayed on the show. A multitalented genius with a beautiful, pure heart of gold, loved by the world. Never will there be another like him. Beautiful soul.

I remember watching "The Red Skelton Show" when I was younger, back in the late 1950's and early 1960's. He and Jack Benny were my favorites. I don't know if you are aware, but he wrote a letter to his wife every day. She collected them and put them into book form. In 1992, she had 1600 leather-bound volumes of his letters, from when he was courting her until that day. He also had to wear metal braces on his legs since the mid-1960's. That may have been his reason to drop weekly television programs from his schedule. He was a wonderful painter, mostly of landscapes and portraits of clowns. In a 1992 interview, he stated that he was still getting Christmas cards addressed to some of his characters, not him personally.

I am a retired circus performer and I have known, worked with and/or watched many great clowns. From the incomparable Pio Nock and self made millionaire Capulina to the nearly unknown Tin Tin Lopez and his rival Mario Preciado "Platanazo" each the owner of a small circus. From Henry Crowell who may have been the last vaudevillian to perform to a musical clown I don't know the name of who played somewhere between 20 and 30 different instruments in about 15 minutes. Red Skeleton was the BEST clown I have ever seen.

The thing I take away from all the laughter and the joy from Red's performances, is that his humor came out of a very tough Depression-era childhood; he lost a son to leukemia when he was only a small child; and he lost his wife, early, too I believe. He had his share of heart-ache: but he found the funny side of life and he made others laugh. Funny people are NOT people who don't have heart-aches in their life - sometimes they seem to have more. . .but they get their joy, their energy and their zest for life by making other people laugh. I have been going through some hard things in my life for some years (acrimonious divorce, loss of children due to "parental alienation", severe life-threatening illnesses, unemployment). But you know what? As I go through my day, I ask the grocery store cashier or stock person "wanna hear a joke?" or the coffee barista or the person waiting at the bus stop with me, "hey did you hear the one about. . ." or I am waiting in a long line at the store and a great way to pass the time is to tell someone standing near you a joke. . .you just wouldn't believe how happy people are to have someone make them laugh. One time I was at Costco and a man ahead of me was very upset because he didn't have his debit card with him and was struggling with how to pay his bill. I sidled over to him and said, "Looks like you're having a rough time here. . .would you like to hear a joke?". So I told him a joke or two, and he was SO grateful! So I think Red's best lesson for us is to carry on his legacy of trying to lighten other people's loads - THEIR LAUGHTER gives you joy in return -- you BOTH have more joy because you stepped out, wanting to lift them up. When I feel down and I tell a joke to someone and experience their laughter, you can't believe the difference it makes in me. Actually, it's kind of selfish of me, in a roundabout way, because I ALWAYS feel better making people laugh. . .God bless all of you who love Red, may laughter "bounce back" at you, too.

That's the best comedy I've heard in years. Brought back many fond memories. I laughed and I cried. These days there aren't such great comedians as there were back then, no need for sex jokes or inapropriete lenguage. It was great clean fun that the whole family could enjoy. I remember my dad and my siblings watching his show as well as Carol Burnett, Sid Ceasor and Hemigene Coca hour and others. They were very enjoyable and no double meaning or bad lenguage was were used. Wish we could get back to that kind of comedy again.

Mr. Skelton you are still the funniest man I have ever watched. He did a mime sketch of a couple, one half the male, the other half the female in evening dress. It was brilliant, and I never forgot it.

Holyshit look at the fabulous artistry in the fishermans sketch. Its very physical and the movements at the timing of the music is remarkable.
    Truely remarkable.

Like a lot on here, I also watched Red Skelton as a kid. My folks and us boys would laugh 'til we near cried. I can remember my folks commenting, way back then, how Red could make people laugh without being or saying anything dirty. It was one of the shows you really looked forward to each week. The world has changed a lot in the past 60 years but boy, could we ever use Red today!!

Red was the best out there when it took TRUE talent to perform on TV, not like today , there are no veritie shows like the ones we had growing up. LIKE the Red Skelton show or Carol Burnett, Ed Sullivan, Sonny and Cher , Donny and Marie. Now it's all dance contest , singing contests,. Nothing to make you laugh, like they SAY laughter is the best medicine, and Red was the best Doctor!!! THANK YOU RED!! GOD BLESS YOUR SOUL!!!!

@@billcook7504 I agree. There are no comedian, variety shows on tv like before. I watched them all. These talent shows are ridiculous. The talent some good some really bad. Every channel has a dance or singing talent show. One show that l am sick of is the Bachelor shows. They got to get rid of this show

up in the 60's. Never remember ever missing, "The Red Skelton

was my favorite movie of all time. I miss him.

His pantomime and skits are the best! I believe this was Robin Williams’ mentor.

Red Skelton's composition about "Birdie" is the finest masterpiece equal, or better than any other classic in history of music, such as; "Silent Night", "Somewhere over the rainbow", "Twinkle, Twinkle little star", "London bridge is falling down", etc. Congratulations Red; You are Genius and Gift to Humanity! Thank you for countless hours of "Laughter to Tears".
