Sweet looking set-up. 👍
Great van tour!!!
Thanks my man CRANK!
Hey thanks for the tour! This was super motivating and exactly what I wanted to see. I've slowly started sharpening as a side business, working out of the bed of my truck, but aspire to move into a van one day. If you don't mind sharing, I would love to hear how you got into sharpening and how you initially found customers / grew your business in the beginning. Cheers, Jordan.
Thanks for the kind words! I'm so glad the video is helpful. I only set up the van last year, and I'm still figuring it out as I go. The majority of business has come from word of mouth / knowing local chefs, placing ads on instagram, and a good presence on google.
Thanks for the cool video man! Very helpful !
Very clean setup. Before doing the 12V battery setup, did you consider using any of the solar generator type batteries from Bluetti or Jackery?
@@bwillan Thanks! I did not consider those when I set it up, but I have definitely been interested in solar for the van. It’s not a high priority yet as thankfully the current setup has been providing enough power so far.
Hey, really like you’re power setup. I am looking at getting mobile in Europe. Can you please again write here what kind off accu and inverter it is and can I ask you the budget you had for the power installation? I enjoyed watching your video. Thank you
Thanks!
Inverter: a.co/d/0jjNzdTa
Battery: a.co/d/0aOB4NqM
Battery Isolator: a.co/d/0eDSn7gE
These are the exact parts I'm using. I think you can get a lower watt inverter without any trouble. I also watched tutorials on youtube for the isolator installation. Hope this helps!
If I wanted to do a minimalist mobile sharpening service for kitchen knives... Do you think I could use a tormeck t2 alongside another machine?
I think it could work fine if you are dealing with household clients and maybe some laid-back restaurants. I will say that when I first started operating the van, I was using a tormek-style machine (the WEN version) for some knives. I didn't keep it in the van long due to the extra time it takes for each knife. I found that when it gets busy or taking on big orders, every second counts and you could easily be stuck there all day if you're not prioritizing efficiency.
What brand inverter do you use, Im setting up something similar. Thanks.
Hi, it's this one: a.co/d/3es2HCg works great, possibly overkill at 4000W but I was concerned about the startup peak on some of my machines. This thing handles everything without issue.
Great video keep em coming. Do you like sewing machine motor and what model and number please
Thanks! The motor is ideal for sharpening applications due to the variable speed and direction. It's also very ideal for a battery-powered setup like mine because it's a DC motor so it draws very little power. Here's the exact motor: a.co/d/5xVL2MK
Thank you , I will keep watching
When do you use the leather wheel compared to the leather 1x30 belt?
I use the wheels for deburring large blades like machetes, axes, lawn mower blades etc. Also nice to use the corner of the leather wheel for serrated knives. It's just a bit more aggressive. The belt is more gentle especially if you can run it slow, it's closer to hand stropping. Great for getting nice kitchen and EDC knives done quick.
@@alsmobilesharpening is there to email you to chat about more sharpening?
@@vinnym5095 absolutely, shoot me an email any time, always happy to discuss this stuff. alsmobilesharpening@gmail.com
how do you keep machines in place if you had to make a short stop or quick turn?
I use some rubber bungee cords to secure everything to the bench / side of the van.
@@alsmobilesharpening thanks - do you think a 5x8 cargo trailer would be a good option just for mobile sharpening service? If not, why?
@@suorento7k I'm sure it can work. The only negative I can think of is it would be less convenient to park. I find myself in some pretty tight parking situations with the van particularly in busy downtown areas. It depends on the types of stops you plan on doing.
