Kalamazoo should put you on their payroll!! 😁I am a sharpener, and I really enjoyed your video. Actually, made me think I might need to get a Kalamazoo. I also like that you gave credit to those you have learned from.
You popped up on my feed. Nice review. Retired guy and been watching Cliff Curry. I as many others who wanted to get into sharpening to sharpen tools, kitchen knives or just general sharpening have purchased the Rikon 50-161VS. After seeing this video I have to say all your points are spot on. Thank You for an excellent post. Good luck and prosper with your new found business.. This machine is a cool piece of equipment for any small shop. Thank You
Hi Warren. I enjoy your enthusiasm for your new line of work. Your video shows you enjoy what you do now as well as using your past experience in massage to help you now. You've chosen some good sources for information. I look forward to seeing how you progress in your new business
Hey Warren, thanks for the info. I'm looking into starting a sharpening business and was wondering if you would recommend this Kalamazoo 1x42 over a Tomak knock off such as the Wen or Bucktool and why? I'm looking to get into the business as cheap as possible while avoiding the need to upgrade my setup several times. I know in a previous video you also mentioned that you would just recommend the Bucktool 1x30 and a leather wheel for a starter, is that still the case or has your opinion changed? Thanks.
I still recommend the Bucktool as a really good starting point. Check out a channel called Al’s Mobile Sharpening on UA-cam. He mainly uses the Bucktools. I love the Kalamazoos.
I’ll try to make a video showing what I did. In simplistic terms the platen was too wide so I used an angle grinder to narrow it enough so the angle guide could slide on.
What’s the income like? I’ve loved sharpening and the feeling of using a sharp knife since I was a child. I have a great career but am considering sharpening as a side hustle
Hard question to answer. Some people are sharpening 5 hours a week and some people are sharpening 40 hours a week so I’m not sure what the average would be.
Did you have to customize your angle guide for your Kalamazoo? If so can you do a video on how! I just purchased one, and I have a curry angle guide but it will not fit. I asked that question before you got the part of customizing the platen. Can you do a video on that? Or is there one out there one out there?
I had to customize the platen. I unfortunately didn’t make a video. 1. Measured the width I needed the platen to be to fit the angle guide. 2. Used a marker and a ruler to draw out how I needed the platen to be modified. 3. Pulled out my angle grinder with a cutoff wheel on it and cut the platen down to size. 4. Slid angle guide onto the newly modified platen.
For the volume of items you plan to sharpen with your belt grinder, what do you expect your cost of belts to amount? For your Tormek, are you using the original aluminum oxide stone?
I’m actually selling the Tormek and the 2 CBN stones. I find that the Edge Pro BevelTech and Apex do most of the same stuff that the Tormek does and I like using them more.
Thanks for all your information. I'm in the starting phase and I have a 1x30 and a ken onion. I have gotten somethings from Curry Custom I'd like to chat with you. I'll message you. Good luck
I have owned one of these for a decade. It is a superb machine, completely trouble free despite heavy use and made in the US.
Great to hear. Glad it’s worked well for you.

Just trying to give back to help those who helped me out.
Thanks for the video, I think it's great that the community helps each other out.
Wow! Never thought that angle guide would fit in there! Nice!
Me neither

Thanks!
Great review, and nice sharpening setup. Looking forward to that longevity review!
Me too!
Thank you for so much info. Trying to learn this.
Thanks for the video. Thumbs up!👍

What exactly did you have to do to mount the angle guide on the knife makers platen? Thanks.

@HonedByJones Thanks Warren, you're awesome.
I wonder if you could put a 2 in drive wheel on it to run 2 by 42 belts?
Don’t know. I’d probably just get a 2x42.

So could you sharpen edge trailing with this machine?
Steven sharpens said in his video that he ordered the machine edge trailing straight from the company.
Thanks for this. What's your preferred source for good quality belts? Looks like the 1x42 is out of stock at Kalamazoo sadly
Curry custom cutlery or red label abrasives have been working well for me

I’ve been using ceramic belts and trizac belts and they both last a long time and the cost is pretty low.
Would 2x42 be a better choice?
I’ve never used a 2x42 so I can’t compare.
Nice
