In this video, I talk about the new 2020 13" MacBook Air with M1 Apple Silicon and test out 4K video editing in Final Cut Pro 1.15 . I also test out Geekbench 5 and Metal compute, video editing with Bruce X, 4K stabilization, h.264 and h.265 HEVC and how these will do editing Canon R5 10-Bit 4:2:2 422 C-Log footage that's also in the Canon R6 and C70, c300 mkii, and more cameras.
I will test ProRES and ProRes RAW, Blackmagic RAW and other raw such as Canon Cinema RAW Lite, Red .R3D and more with metal graphics decoding in my next video about the 2020 MacBook Pro with M1 Apple Silicon.

Oh come on Max, lets see the R5 8K RAW and HEVC tests already...If it runs it then the MBP is my next laptop as I have an R5. Then I’ll wait a few years for updated laptop designs and new chips and upgrade to a 16” with more ports and more RAM.

Yes, this all of a sudden makes the R5 a muuuch more viable solution for video. Didn't matter that the IQ was amazing as long as the work flow was seriously hampered by the codecs. Now this (apparently) is no longer an issue.

For real, what the heck. This is the lowest of the lowest of the M1 chips, only 8GB of RAM, it’s like the entry bread and cheese plate of a restaurant while waiting for the main course, but it somehow leaves you completely fulfilled and hooked on it... this entree is definitely plenty for me.

A lot of apple haters out there saying that this is not really that fast. They seem to forget that windows pc share the same problems that android phones. They need extremely fast cpus and gpus to compensate for poorly optimized software and fragmented OSs. It’s truly remarkable what apple has accomplished.
I also bought a MacBook Pro recently and yes it kinda sucks but it’s alright. My next MacBook will be even better.

This is very impressive and I'm really glad you showed some of the R5 footage in action. However, I use plug-ins like like mTitle for FCPX (I'm sure we all do), so I'm curious to know how that runs on this machine. Also, I heard it doesn't handle Chrome so well, so would be interested to see 4K video playback there as well.
Heard there's reviewers running chrome 4k video for 8 hours in the background. Anyway chrome has announced support for arm.

@@rainermenes5921 I jumped from Chrome to Safari about a month ago in anticipation. It was way faster on my intel Mac, it’s silly faster now. The better security features and Apple handoff are also great 👌
Im sold, for my current needs a macbook air can do it all. I was really afraid of how well the air would do w/o a fan, but these tests show that for non pro users its good as is. I dont video edit often, like say once a month or so, and they’re usually just casual videos in 1080, not 4k or more, so this will easily chomp through anything i can currently throw at it.
In the future i may upgrade to whatever the higher tier version of the 13inch pro releases for the extra ports and better cooling, but for now this seems like the best fit for me.
It’s like iPhone without fan, it’s warm when heavy task is running, it’s gonna be alright

Watching this on my new m1 air. The hype is real guys, this thing is wonderful. The new P3 screen is exactly like my pro except a wee bit dimmer. Battery life is amazing, heat issues are nonexistent for my usage. Plus you get that sweet wedge. If you're on the fence just grab one you won't regret it.

@Chrono I'm convinced it is brighter than the mid 2020 air I had for a bit boo. I returned my pro but if you take that on max brightness and drop it down 2 notches that's about where I'm at. Maybe 3. It's pretty aight.
How’s the throttling when doing long video editing and renders? I’m thinking if putting a cooling pad and fans pointed at the air will help with throttling.

Thanks for this, Max! I was going to hold off for the 16" M1 Macbook Pro, but now I'm wondering if I really need to. The M1 Air seems more than sufficient for Photoshop and Video. The results of this comparison are insane!
I’m coming from a 16” MBP and after today I just ordered the 13” MBP. I’m working with 5K RedCine footage. I think we should be good. I’m confident at this point. I also don’t need a large laptop screen as I mostly plug into an external monitor.
Buy Macbook Air and get some cool lenses for your camera. Way better deal than wasting money on Macbook Pro

@@stevemuzak8526 Air does throttle quite a lot, it is still insane even after throttling though. However, Pro goes on indefinitely without throttling under full load.
@@AaronFigFront I wonder if pointing external fans and having a cooling pad underneath the Air should help it stay more consistent and not throttle.

Apple's claims about it being better than 98 percent of pcs were vague af. But tbh they also compared their latest macbook airs to their predecessors claiming to have a far better performance..and that's when Linus should have stopped speaking

Max, thank you again for running these tests, much appreciated. I saw the other video had Lightroom classic tests (thank you), but the main thing that us Photograpers do when we first drop in 1000 images from a shoot, is thumb right or left to go through each image and rate them for post processing. My 16inch can even struggle sometimes when I am going at a fast pace. It would be great to see how the M1 handles this.

@Chrono This is not the 8 core GPU version, and it is the entry level compared to the other M1s
This is apples version of a fanless i5. Wait for big navi. That come out wrong, wait for m1x and apple dgpu. Probably won't match 6900x or 5950x, but let's see. M1X probably will do 10k in geekbench multicore, 3k less than 5950x, but if that's still a mobile chip then a true desktop M1Z might still be in the works.
@Chrono The MacBook Air is their entry level device. This is the first chop they’ve originally launched and it’s for their entry level devices - the MacBook Air, the lower-end MBP, and the Mac Mini. I stand by what I said. If the MacBook Air’s performance jumped from a dual-core i3 to the 7-core Silicon chip, I can’t imagine what the MBP 14, MBP 16, and iMacs will like.

Holly S**T dude, I tried Big Sur on my Macbook Air 11' 2014 model. Rendering 8Mins Full HD was 14 Minutes on Catalina, and it only takes 2 minutes on Big Sur. I believe that it's not only the M1 chip that makes it faster, the new OS did it also.

BigSur has some kind of optimization for sure. I also noticed. Then, that's the whole point - design your own hardware and write software to make best use of it. The power of integration. :)

OMG seeing this, I don't know what to expect from the A14X IPad Pro
iPad will probably use this too. The A12x&z are basically the same config, 4 high power 4 low power. Why split when this chip is proven insane. But maybe iPad will cap at 8GB ram as the only config.
@@PTYC933 there is serious changes coming to the A14X, 5G first and many more. The ram you are probably right, and also the new ipad is going to come with an oled type screen without burn in possibilities.
Ok, the M1 is just an A14x and a14z, fully unlocked. It is going to be the same one as in the MBA but performs slightly less.
@@thetechnerd1617 if it were fully unlocked, you could overclock it, which you can’t. The A14X is based on a completely different design with integrated 5G. The IPad Pro is also meant to have a much more powerful GPU.
@@thorium9190 I would like to say that yeah iPad should be getting 5G, but what is stopping the next step for macbook from getting 5G in their M1x or z? Likely in a 12inch macbook or 16inch pro. And micro LED as well.

@@ilipan2668 the 16 inch is still more powerful gpu wise, especially the 5600m. There was other benchmark tests and the dgpu outperforms still with more filters. I would be more worried about app support. Last time this happened , developers dropped powerpc completely even universal binary in 2 years

Sara Dietschy did and encountered no issues with video editing and playback.
as of now it's the only device that can decode 4:2:2 HEVC except the ipad pro
No other hardware supports it because the standards are either 4:2:0 (which is visually identical even after heavy corrections) or 4:4:4
If you have the A7SIII you're lucky because that camera follows the standards and you have the HEVC 4:2:0 options.

A few side notes for video editors, Other vendors need to update their codecs to work natively with M1. Red, Canon, Sony all of them, most probably they won't work well right now and that is not M1 or FCP's fault.

This is false. H.264/HEVC is accelerated wether its Sony, RED, Canon. It has already been confirmed the M1 can handle 5K 8:1 REDCODE RAW. BRAW support coming in resolve soon.

H.264 is not a proprietary codec, is it? But REDCODE is, BRAW is.
If the footage was shot using Prores or H.264 or... of course it will work but if the codec is a proprietary, camera specific codec, then it won't run as smoothly unless it has been recoded for M1.

16 is definitely the way to go. 8 is low today and is not upgradable so go high.
go for 16. I saw ram usage he showed on the previous video and it had 4.6gb of swap used with about 6.75gb out 8gb of ram use for a video he was editing i think. 16gb of ram wouldn't need that swap, and it will be less usage on the ssd too.
What we feel about the M1 performance now is probably how big Tech UA-camrs felt for their spec'd out Macs / iMac Pro's when they came out 🤣 Only this time, we can afford it.
I've been using an early 2015 Macbook Air and was considering upgrading to a custom MBP or a 4K iMac this year. There were so many tempting releases but I'm so glad I waited. For my needs, I finally don't feel like upgrading to something far more expensive than an Air would be necessary. True, I'm really looking forward to that comparison. However, although there is a bright future for the new Ryzen mobile chips, I don't think they can get to efficiency levels of the Apple Silicon chips because of the differences in architectures. Ryzen mobile will be going to 5nm just like Apple Silicon really soon, however the x86 architecture is inherently much less efficient. The hardware of the Apple Silicon chips is nothing new or something that AMD can't create, but the ARM architecture, Metal API, and general Mac OS optimizations behind them make them so high performing. Trust me, I really hope that Windows laptops or desktop APUs will be as powerful and efficient as this, since it is my primary OS for professional work, but I have to admit that Apple Silicon has an inherent, architectural advantage that I don't think Ryzen or any other x86 based chip can reach. Just my thoughts. We got to give Apple credit where credits due though.

If anyone can answer and yes I’m an ignorant slut for video editing. Would Macbook air base model is enough for 4K video editing? I’m trying to get into video editing and it seems like Air best for buck. Only concerned is not having a fan but if my editing is short then it shouldn’t be a problem? For the last should I get 8GPU Air rather than the base Air? If anyone please help I’m so new to this!
When I said short film i meant 10mint min 15mint max and people say MacBook Air get slower and degrade faster whereas MacBook pro will hold up its performance longer than Air, is it true? I know there are too many questions but I can’t find answers to these! HELP

Hi Max, thank you so much for this, as someone who has been wanting to transition to Mac/FCP for a while for low end video making, I've really appreciated all the work you've put in. I've decided to go for the Air because we work in a dusty environment on the farm and need to look at drone footage ( even though I know we'll sacrifice a 100 nits ) and use the savings for 16GB and a 2TB hard drive so we are not dragging dongle drives around, thanks again for your great reviews, regards Chris
