It's not that Calli is actually "controversial" it's that social media and the people on the internet have become completely deranged. Calli is a hardworking woman that knew how to best use the rare opportunities that where presented to her. Lady Death has my approval and may she continue to prosper. And hopefully not die either from alcohol poisoning to a stroke due to copious caffeine consumption.

Unfortunately we live in a world where basically everything You say is easily torn apart by the mass of hosts of individuals that just DON'T know how to see what is ACTUALLY being said or felt or etc. I can look at most of what Calli is saying in here and know pretty quickly that what she's trying to say is very different from what people are claiming in those texts. I know that some of these people are just extremely overly dramatizing what's actually happening. Calli says one thing and I and most other people understand what she means. but then a handful of just vindictive, hateful, and spiteful individuals wanna see everything as something bad. Unfortunately we have to deal with a lot of these people that just don't THINK about what is being said or how it's intended. They just wanna quickly assume what they THINK is actually means and that's where the assumptions and conspiracy comes from. most of these controverses just seem like Misdirection. Like all Calli really did wrong at all is just react poorly and make little mistakes. as a result it was just received badly and then escalated much worse by people Blowing it out of proportion and creating their own Narratives. I've been doxed multiple times and experiences issues like this before so I understand very well what it's like to be misunderstood and how badly people can try to twist what You say. You make the tiniest mistake or the smallest slip up and a arsenal of perpetual pigeons are waiting to flock right ontop of your mistake and make it as worse as they possibly can just to ruin you for any reason they can. That's why You just gotta be stronger and smarter and learn how to deal with these things. people can't be controlled all You can do is control how you react and what You say and do and etc

I have so much sympathy for Cali wanting her friends from her underground days to be proud of her... There's an unfortunate threshold of success that, once you cross, a lot of people say you've sold out and are soulless now, that you've lost the point of the music. Particularly in more punk/counter culture scenes like she used to operate in. I hope those friends have listened to her music because whatever your opinion of it, you cannot deny that it is filled to bursting with soul and sincerity.

@@kclink1579 I think you can sell out and still be a hard worker. She has even admitted that the past her would probably shit on the current her for her choice to go corporate and some of the songs she now sings. Like do you think the edge lord underground rapper that she was when she moved to Japan would respect somebody who did a cover of "Sorry I'm so Cute". Or any of the other idol songs she's been part of?
She even admitted on Trash Taste that before she joined Hololive she thought the entire Idol culture and VTubers to be pretty cringe. So in how the term is used, she did sell out and now works for a corporation where they will tell her to work on songs that she's not a fan of or would never do on her own. Take a look at the first song Myth did together "Country Roads". Kiara has mentioned that she HATES that song with a passion but that management made the decision that was the song they were going to do so they did. I'm more Mori has been put in that same situation and she's hinted if not flat out stated that being part of a corporation has its disadvantages and that's one of them.
She is a professional and so will work in the confines of the Corporate structure which means from time to time singing songs she doesn't want to, and then promoting them. To me that would seem to be "selling out" or at least how some would define that term. She also has the chance to make music that she really wants to and have that listened to by a much wider audience. Which is the upside to "selling out".

@@ScoutOlson I'm pretty sure that on the scale of N word use, she's more on the "Rappin' For Jesus" end rather than the "Karen wants to say the N word, reeee". She doesn't come across as feeling entitled to say it and a lot of rappers have embraced her because of her flow style and rhyme scheme, which pays homage to some of the greats and does them justice. The woman's has earned her stripes and her freestyle's nasty in some of the best ways. I'm pretty sure that in the rap scene, she's earned the ability to say it, and even then, she doesn't say it often or directly to attack. It's about tone and how you come across. She tends to say it with due respect, for as I can recall. So I think that's why most people in the scene aren't bothered. G-Idle's Soyeon, for example, has been one of the few Korean rappers to say "Niga" and no one except chronic twitter users batted an eye, even before "niga" = you was wider known. Soyeon's earned her rep with her lyrics and flow. And again, was rather mindful even with the language difference.
Long winded way to say: it seems like the rap scene gave them both their N-word passes. And neither has abused it, from the last time I'd checked.

@@Yunfarron78 i can’t speak for all of us, but i do know it’s general knowledge that someone who’s comfortable saying it has said it before in other contexts. that’s why people side eye someone who openly says it in this way, not because hearing a white mf say it in a song is offensive but because it suggests familiarity. we’ve lived our whole lives hearing it and being called it, it would be weird if we didn’t recognize specific connotations. i don’t think mori was going around throwing slurs, but for people who are confused as to why you’re seen as a weirdo for saying it in a song, that’s why. it’s not always the case, but it’s definitely common. there’s a lot of underlying context when it comes to racism that white people will never understand, they’re quick to decide and judge based on information that’s either missing or completely wrong.
i don’t care what anyone uses in rap, and i think a lot of people feel the same way, we usually just overreact as a joke cause it is a little funny when people panic over something like that. we don’t dislike that word for fun it’s because seeing someone you care about being subjected to it or being called it yourself is a distressing experience. especially for kids. i think most people who have a very intense opinion have it because of that, they were children when they first experienced that flavor of racism.
so don’t be trying to justify anything, people will think however they want to and if you truly believe what you’re saying you shouldn’t feel the need to defend it. she’s a grown adult i’m sure she was aware of the response she would inevitably get.

It's been a year... a whole year... and I still can't watch this part @7:42 without tearing up.
End of a life is really one of Calli's best songs. I feel so bad for Calli that she feels so lonely sometimes. Where the friend that she still holds dear, even after the friends wronged her, calling Calli a sell out because Calli moved on into another way in her career, after the world went through sh*t. Rather going for Calli's throat out of envy, instead of being proud of Calli for grabbing this opportunity.
I dislike that Calli would be blamed for Gura being at the party. Gura is a big girl guys, her model might not looks like it, but Gura is capable of making big girl decisions. As for Calli's work schedule it's rather insane, she really is putting everything in her music.
As for us Deadbeats that do love her, we know that Calli dislikes to show sadness on streams, she really really tried to debut as this very cool/stoic character. Yet sometimes she would simply break, specially when it hits very close. When Kiara had to leave Japan, Kiara was also sharing her side of the story. The part I loved and sticked with me from Kiara's side of her story is that Calli off-screen actually acts uncharacteristic, when it comes to something/someone very close to Calli's heart, someone like Kiara. Calli had such a hard time letting go of Kiara at the airport, clinging onto Kiara like glue all the way to the airplane gates.
Luckily over the years chipping away at Calli's view on herself, at least the way she though who she needed to be as a streamer/rapper, we're finally able to make Calli sure that it's ok to cry, that it's ok to be sad and that it's absolutely oke for Calli to take breaks if she is at her limits. I love Calli.
P.s.: Yes I know about Calli's alt account, looks and name. Yet I don't care, I just love her whacky, funny and caring personality the most

The comparison of Brad Taste and Knox Hill in their opinions and reviews of Calliope's music is truly a prime example of someone who's short sighted in their enjoyment of music and one who loves music as a whole.
When you can't look at a song that is put together in such a complex way and all you see is 'white girl rapping and trying to hard' it kind of shows the ignorance of the style of music being played. Its the same as when people hate rap and refuse to see the art of a lyricist's penmanship, or when someone listens to a ballad and not comprehend the emotions conveyed in the voice.
Every true musician knows these nuances and understand what is happening even if they don't like the song/genre/artist.

Well. Some of her stuff is good. Some is flat. Mostly she's a lyricist over a musician. That isn't bad. But instead of finding a good songwriter she goes the way of production tricks. Again. That isn't bad. Perfectly valid way to do things. Especially now days. But I'm never going to listen to a Mori song and think, "Huh, what time signature is that in? Oh. That's kinda interesting, she's shortening every 2 a 16th note to give it velocity and setup an unsettling feeling.", or "Oh, that was a nice scale change for the chorus.". It's, "I guess that was an interesting sound effect fill to hide there isn't a transition into the chorus.". It's perfectly serviceable and not a wrong way to do it. But I'm not going to really appreciate her for anything other than the lyrical acrobatics. I will give her her due one thing musically. She has written a melody for all her songs. There's stuff in Top 40 land which isn't even that, there's some talentless hackery getting by on paying for a place on a Spotify playlist in the Top 10.

I am sure that Drake, J.Cole, Scarface and Big L put out songs they didn't want to revisit too but they also recognized as rappers, this is a space where music is heavily scrutinized as its an extension of the individual. Rap is an ego driven, personality driven genre of music and kid gloves are rarely used. I find it so corny that any critical discussion of either of her eras cannot be treated as valid discussion of quality in rap because she is a popular VTuber. I've added to this comment in a weird, rambly order. I'm also drunk:
Thank you for your hardwork! Calli is and always has been one of my oshi's, in part because of her irreverence. I love it. There was a lot I learned in this video. Whilst a lot people are salty for various reasons, to various degrees, I just see a hololive Vtuber who has a relatable mood, particularly because she's a little older and jaded. I also love how she's, at least on some level, struggled to become an idol. The fact that the idol pretence was at odds with her, just made for great content. I actually think that's what makes a lot of hololive what it is. After all, it's the dichotomy between character and actor/actress that makes Vtubing so special to begin with. Everybody loves Sora, but if all idols were seiso, things would be less interesting.
I'm not into her music. Hell, I'm not really into hololive music for the most part (Towa's cover of ERROR, Suisei's Stellar Stellar and Risu's Alice&U being some exceptions). Anyhow, with Calli and the rest, I see it in a similar way to supporting your friends' band or something. You may not listen to it in your own time, but you're happy to support them, whilst they're doing their best, doing something they love. I dunno, I never got into the whole hating Justin Bieber or whatever flavour of the month. Constantly hearing the same chart music can be grating but, it's the game you got to hate, not the player.
Original comment: Man, I remember cringing at the Coco Meme Review with Calli. It was clearly not her kind of humour. I found 90% of the memes to be unfunny, but what made the show so great was the guest reactions. If they went along with the flow, then it was all good, great even. The fact that Calli didn't have it in her to humour the usual wide spread jokes-turned low effort visual memes was relatable, but damn it made for a difficult watch.

About the hate on her song and how people creates their own narrative to confirm it i have 2 examples:
1 - With her newest cover, Internet Yamero, the original creator of the song commented on the video saying how good the cover was and how it sounded like a official English ver. But you could see haters in the reply saying that "he was forced by contract" to leave that comment and that he didn't really mean it and thst the cover is "mediocre at best". It is really funny to see how much they create these lies and believe it themselves like it's 100% true.
2 - about the reacts with reviews about her song, another good example is a channel called "ROARTHERAPPER" that does deep analysys to her songs with videos that goes above 20 minutes of him talking line per line and shows how much knowledge and talent she have with rap. tbh the first point the cover really isn't that good compared to the original but it's better than any other indie tuber's cover just because the song is difficult to cover to begin with, let alone write translyrics for. i really don't think calli is that good at singing things outside her vocal range, or that the tracks she sings for do not suit her voice type.
red for example was really good because it was made with her voice in mind and had a melody line that fit the way she raps (in which she puts a lot of emphasis on her consonants as opposed to her vowels). i think she definitely needs to study other forms of rap closer, and take some time to improve her singing via lessons, etc., because she has the passion and energy but the actual execution is not that great.
not denying she doesn't already have a lot of knowledge, but i really do not enjoy her newer tracks and i do not think she picks songs that suit her voice. if other people can, more power to them, but i don't think people saying "this cover is not that great" is blind hating. making constant videos calling her stupid or saying "she said the n word 10 years ago!!" is blind hating though -- i agree with your second point.
you can only get so far with practice. i really think she should pursue vocal coaching and listen to things outside of what she likes to improve her voice quality and maybe get back to what red established for her. i still think her cover of envy baby is one of her best, and it really sucks she just seems to have strayed so far from that point.

Which is another reason people have to understand about her friendships with people like Connor. She was in JP isolated from many other wsternerns and that’s hella isolating. She undoubtedly loves her genmates, but there js something special about irl friends you can hang with and lean on. Hell, one of her best friends is MARRIED to one of the TT guys. The problem that I have with Brad isn't even that he doesn't bother looking into Calli's background and the culture surrounding her; it's that he has built a large portion of his OWN fanbase around how much he thinks she's a culture vulture when he has no skills of his own to back up any of his claims.
He has no professional experience creating music, much less attempting to understand the artist behind the songs he reviews, and he has the audacity to claim that anything he doesn't like is just cut and dried corpotrash.
If we put any of his arguments against Graham's Hierarchy of Disagreement, we see that they all fall under "name calling", "ad hominem (addressing characteristics of the opposition without addressing the argument itself)", "responding to tone", and "contradiction (providing arguments with little to no supporting evidence)".

    • @My2Cents.iF7934
      @My2Cents.iF7934 Рік тому +65

By "professional experience", let me give you a couple examples of people with such experience.
Knox Hill, for instance, is a very accomplished artist who understands how the composition of a song is an extremely complex task as well as how difficult it is to make bars flow together. And a lot of those lyrics are in a language he likely doesn't even speak!
Scru Face Jean (another person who has reviewed Calli's work) is also a fellow rapper who understands such intricacies, and he has had nothing but respect for Calli, both within her Reaper persona and without.
Brad has exactly none of these under his belt, and has spoken on neither the composition, nor the lyrics and their meanings. He has given zero thought to ANY of his reviews of Calli's work, and that is what disgusts me about him.

Speaking on the BradTaste situation, I've watched a lot of his videos before, but his ones on Mori and DDK in particular are what drove me away.
It was clear to me that he had little to no experience as a musician, so he was criticizing Mori and DDK solely off of his opinion. Now usually I'd be fine with this. I like hearing genuine criticism of things, even those I enjoy personally. However, Brad's opinions basically came down to him seemingly hating the anime community, J-Pop and other similar genres, and VTubers, simply because he doesn't understand them in the slightest. He gives off the vibes of "I don't understand it, therefore I don't like it," but while also not even attempting to try to understand it.
The clip in this video of him talking to his friend about the designs really nailed that home for me. The friend talking about how the VTuber models are designed by big names in the manga industry is a huge deal and a big achievement, and Brad kind of just looked at it like "ew, corporate." It's like he only has two criticisms, being that it's corporate and even remotely related to anime. It's fine to not like this stuff, but to completely disregard the achievements someone has made because of your complete lack of understanding, even after multiple streams and videos, even after having a fan try to explain it to you, it just shows that, at least on this topic, Brad is extremely close minded and not even willing to really have a genuine conversation about the topic and why people like it because "haha, Japanese anime corporate cringe White girl."
I also have to give Brad partial blame for the harassment Mori faced as part of the old lyrics of a song she denounced and deleted. Why is this? Well, Brad covered DDK's music on stream, and one of the lyrics has, from what I saw when I still watched him, became a huge meme on his channel, further propelling it into the public eye. Is he solely to blame, absolutely not, but he did play a big role in that side of the Anti hate.

I've been a fan of Calli since before she was in HoloLive. She is hands down the hardest working person I have ever seen or heard of. She is also a painfully honest person who tries to share everything with her fans, often unfiltered and raw. Way too many vtuber fans are way too sensitive and protective about the idea of being a idol. It's not unique to Japan either. If there's one thing fans on the internet hate is honesty, and Calli does not shy away from sharing intimate details of her life and how she feels about things. Having an opinion is just about the worst you can do these days.
Calli has also dealt with a lot of shit from former friends and especially members of the underground music scene who see her success as being a sell out or betrying them and the scene. Its all sourgrapes and bullshit but it adds to the choir of hate Calli has to put up with. But Calli has definitely helped the underground scene, promoting creators, arranging work and collabs for her griends, and she even used half the time of her 3D showcase to throw a going away concert for her friends who were retiring from the music scene. Thats not the actions of someone who's sold out or forgotten her roots.

Thanks a lot for this very deep dive into Calli and the many facets of her hatedom. I think that, while there might be a grain of truth to some of the complaints about her (like oversleeping streams or not being very active during collabs), most of it can be chalked up to her unhealthy workaholic lifestyle attempting to juggle streaming, two separate music careers, keeping up with what her coworkers are doing, and all the administrative stuff that comes with being part of hololive (and early on, which is when most of these poor first impressions of her firmly established themselves, she *also* was holding a full-time job on top of all that!) Claims that she is lazy or that she doesn't care about her coworkers in hololive are clearly very far removed from the truth, but sadly people tend to ignore the good while overemphasizing the bad and spinning their own narrative instead of looking at the bigger picture.
I really hope Calli can keep on keeping on despite all this. From the content of many of her songs, it is clear that she struggles with mental health issues, including depression. She tries to spin an image of herself as a badass who laughs at her haters, but she's clearly more affected by the negative comments than she claims to be, because if she *really* didn't care, she just wouldn't respond to them. In a cruel twist of irony, the track that umru (the guy who ended up disowning his work with her and blocking her) produced was specifically one where she revealed her vulnerable side, her struggles with impostor syndrome, and the pain she goes through.
She's the only content creator I can think of who has at least three separate hatedoms that all blast her for different reasons - the normie crowd (like Brad) who just don't like her music and think dunking on her is the new cool thing to do, the vtweeter crowd that got salty after she told them to "start creating, stop tweeting" and now sees her as a fascist, racist, and every other _ist under the sun, *and* the 4chan unicorn crowd who hate her for not being "idol-ish" enough + the Connor thing. Ah. I see Calli as an "interesting case" in a bit different aspect, in that from that point on, the "Western fans" -- who had a bit of a good reputation as being "not as parasocial or toxic as Japanese idol otaku fans" ... showed the "true face," so to speak.
While the indie scene was continuously growing ever since Kizuna Ai, still, up to that point the "Vtubers of the West" weren't in such a red-ocean situation as it is nowadays, and the general level of interest and reach of its popularity was still quite limited. In other words, most people didn't really understand what "Vtubers" were in the first place, had no knowledge about them, and those who did know about them and became fans had still a superficial understanding of what it requires to be one.
Particularly cringey, were the assumptions that because Holo girls were "corporate" that they got like unlimited financial backing from the company, and the money power of Hololive would just automatically ensure success. These notions were thrown around from a lot of indie Vtubers back than -- to the ire of a lot of the fans who understood that being a Hololive talent was an insanely labor-intense job which required a very strict level of self control, discipline and professionalism. But despite the backlash, some sections of the fans, and some of the indies, continuously tried to push the "corporate vs indie" narrative and tried to slander hololive every chance they got.
Of course, these days a lot of such sentiment has died down, but back then, due to the fact that the MYTH girls were the ones who really blew the doors wide open, it was only natural much of the attention -- as well as misguided toxic hate -- was focused around them.
Anyone still would like to dis her for "having it easy" I welcome them to prove their point. Calli, moved to a different country, acquired a work visa and worked as part-time English teacher, made her own living in an unfamiliar land, learned the language, before she was picked up in hololive so I'd expect at the least that amount of effort from. As someone who has started to join the Vtuber community and will eventually stream using a Vtuber model, I see myself in Calli. We are both rebellious and are not afraid to speak our minds. It saddens me that people constantly harass her because she genuinely seems nice and doesn't fit the "norm." It reminded me of myself in middle school being an alternative back in 2017-2019 (which I still am); people constantly bullying me while dealing with my mental health struggles only reminded me even more of her. Honestly, she inspires me to say fuck it and start streaming and being another tuber to break the "norm."

They don't have to start liking her music because it is already a subjective topic, and everyone's taste is different. Still, she's only just a person who struggles to find her happiness and be successful in what she likes to do. Is that ever a crime, a sin, or a wrong thing to do? Of course, haters gonna hate, but we can all change for the better, at least that's what I hope for.

If there's one thing I love about Mori is the amount of BS she's not willing to take and I respect that. The idol industry can be a cruel mistress and idol stans can be next level psychotic. I think standing your ground against that type toxicity, whether it come from your fans or antis, and still coming out on top is definitely something I respect. Thank you Rima for this video. It has earned you a sub.
One of the first aspects of Mori I noticed was her openness regarding her flaws. Traditionally, an idol is supposed to uphold the veneer of perfection, but Calli simply did not do this. Her willingness to embrace her foibles and allow them to become as much a part of the Mori Calliope persona as herself, it was certainly going against the grain, violating a strict taboo in the idol community. Funnily enough, another one of Connor's controversial comments regarding the vtuber community (how they can be utterly psychotic at times in how they handle things) turned out to be prophetic regarding Mori's detractors. Although at the time I'm pretty sure he was saying that the community's clingy obsessiveness was what made them crazy, it is a scientific fact that the love of a vtuber community can be just as caustic and poisonous as their hate.
This may not be the place to say this, but my blood's up a little after watching the vid, so I'm gonna lay my feelings bare. The whole "racist accusation" thing is the stupidest nonsense ever. I mean...who hasn't been accused of doin' a racism on the Xitters at some point? It has become a cultural rite of passage at this point.
At the end of it all though, while Calli's controversies and missteps cannot be erased, it makes her one of the most real, one of the most genuine vtubers I follow, because it reminds me that behind the screen and the model, there's a real person there, a living, breathing soul with hopes, loves, dreams, doubts, smiles, and tears. She's real just like us, and her successes and failures are there for us to see. It's why I respect her. It's why I love her. Because she shows us that there's really someone there.
To top it off, Mori gave us Mythbreakers, and I will never allow such a creation to be forgotten. Like her, it wasn't a squeaky clean project, but it came from a place of genuine passion, and I heard that in her voice every time she DM'd for the group.
Sorry if this came off sappy or simpy, Rima. Your vid did what few others can do: it stirred some emotions in this old, bitter husk of a mortal shell.

Gura is an adult, who doesn't need protection. If Gura considers it safe enough, then anything that happens later is on Gura herself.
Did Calli make a mistake? Yes, but was it critical? No.
Her rapping should be a matter of taste. I like it, but you don't have to. If she was appropriating Japanese culture, Hololive wouldn't have accepted her. As for "Black" music, there are several examples of accepted white rappers, and I don't see why she is different.

I see so much of the "drama" and controversies that arise, not just around Calli, but in all of VTubing because its just a bunch of immature children not having the life experience to deal with situations appropriately. I'm 35 years old, I have a full-time job and bills to pay. I don't have the time or patience to go on Twitter or Reddit and complain about some perceived slight made by an online personality.
The vast majority of Calli's "controversies" were made FOR her, not because of her. They were turned into problems because VTuber fans are typically young, have social anxiety/anti-social issues, don't interact with people on a usual day-to-day basis and rarely detach from the Internet, thus they don't have the skills or reasoning to diffuse situations most adults have learned to do. Because let's face it, these "controversies" are incredibly childish nonsense that would have never happened if these people logged off and touched grass some more. And as mean as that may sound, the truth hurts sometimes and its part of growing up. And more VTuber fans need to learn that lesson and stop harassing others.

-Claiming Calli, who is often barely comfortable with sexual humor, is going to corrupt of all people IRyS, who is constantly making sexual humor, is absurd.
-Saying she doesn't care for her fellow vtubers is downright false. Out of everyone, she's the one I most often see praising or promoting the others. Often absolutely out of nowhere too. And like you pointed out, she will publicly stick up for the others whenever anyone comes after them, even in cases where it's clear if she does so it'll come at some kind of cost for her.
