This video shows a teardown of a cheap smartphone camera. This camera is so called focus-free camera, it has no moving parts and it is permanently focused into distance (infinity). The camera has an infrared filter in between on lens and CMOS chip. There's a possibility to remove the filter and make the camera sensitive to infrared light. With an infrared LED illumination you could have a homemade night vision.

Just tore down a S8 Samsung. WOW! Eye reader, fingerprint reader. (I think) Anyway, the most interesting was the optical image stabilizer on the 12 mp camera, 650,000 pixels on each 1/16" square, each one with it's own lens, red, blue, and green filter, and circutry. Wow. Anyway the lens floats in a spring loaded housing with a simple coil of wire on the x and y axis to keep it pointed straight ahead. When the camera jiggles, the coils sense the movement and apply a opposite force from the electromagnets. The same coils (2) do the sensing and apply counter movements it appears. Anybody that thinks $800 is all profit should check out the pile of mechanical pieces on my table. I didn't have enough interest to verify everything here so sorry if there is a mistake.

Interesting teardown. It's amazing how we are able to reduce such a complex device into something that is so tiny, yet inexpensive and easy to mass manufacture. Audio is a little bit distorted.

There's just one problem - that camera isn't working after such teardown anymore. Would be cool to be able to tear it down, remove IR filter and then assemble it back together. Alas

Hello I need some help: I would remove camera from smartphone and extend the connection cable to keep it connected as it woud be into the phone but using it 1m away from the phone. Anyone knows how to do it?
Yes but actually no, you can not extend the camera cable, cz it too small to connect. I prefer wifi/external camera or if you have two phones, you can use them connected via bluetooth aplication.

Kinda, this is near infrared, like the remote controls of TVs. Thermal cameras are far infrared and they have different sensors and lenses.

You probably can do it if it is the same type of phone or very simmilar. Otherwise you probably can't because the connector may be different, the pinout may be different or the software may not work with other camera.
No, don't even try it even if it's the same connector, the pinout of the chip might be different and can shorting something and damage the board

It strikes me that it should be possible to interface a tiny video camera with the optic nerve.
They was a test with a human about 4 years back. The ccd implanted was low res, around 18 by 18 pixels. It worked, but was removed soon after. The person could only see basic shapes like large lit letters in a dark room. To this date I'm not heard of newer tests. But yes, it can be done, the problem is the transfer amd rate of data between a ccd or cmos device and the organic optic nerve. There is hope.
