  • Heath Ledger's Joker is the quintessential picture of psychopathy in movies. But is this really consistent with what we see from him? In this follow up to Part I of the Bruce Wayne Diagnosis series we take a closer look at the Joker and how he shines light on Bruce Wayne's own trauma issues.

Just found your channel. Love it.
At about 3minites. The joker knew that Batman wouldn’t kill him he just dared him. Knowing that Batman knew that if he did it all of Jokers seemingly nonsensical wonton destruction would end. But killing is something Batman couldn’t do. He’s never do and joker knew this he was toying with him psychologically. Same thing for Harvey. He knew he wanted justice, revenge, punishment for those who did what they did. Pointing out that Jokers little scheme wouldn’t of been possible if corrupt cops had been let to walk around freely in the open. He knew Harvey wouldn’t kill him. He was gambling on that coin flip to add to the psychological tug of war he was waging on everyone. Now if the coin had gone the other way it was possible Harvey would pull the trigger. However it’s still a movie, Harvey Dent pulling through trigger and killing Joker right there wouldn’t of been good for the movies story line which is why this scene is here. It wouldn’t be here if Joker would of been blown away. But the conversation he has with Harvey is what’s important. He lets him realize the real issue at hand. Joker wouldn’t be around if it wasn’t for the corruption and essentially Batman as well. When a extreme personality such as Batman’s surfaces there is often another extreme personality on the opposite end. Happens more so in movies and comics and such but you can see that in society as well. Extreme on one side or the other prompts the other side to make itself known and to take action to be loud enough for some to hear.

I think this is a great video. Very insightful and interesting. And I don't want to be that pedantic guy that feels the need to correct someone's pronunciation but I feel the need to say that it's not Psyco-PATHY, it's Psy-COP-athy. The stress is on the second syllable. Sorry but you're obviously very knowledgeable so saying the word conventionally gives you more cred. Again great video. I subbed also. Great job. 👍👍👍

@@fore54k3n you're absolutely right. You see the extremes in society all the time. In fact it's a well known phenomenon that the extremists on both sides of an issue are the ones making the most noise causing the majority of people that occupy the moderate/middle ground to choose sides. We're seeing that now with Trump supporters feeling emboldened to act out in the most extreme ways. Like supporting an obviously immoral, narcissistic, racist and corrupt wannabe dictator. While everyone else is scratching their heads wondering how such a person could accumulate so much support. But it's really just the loud fringe/extremists that think they're the majority but they're not. Not even close.
      Great analysis though. 👍

Well to be honest I think you have to dig into each character, from each actor, because they all bleed into each other with the aspect of the characterization.
      The Killing Joke.
They are opposites that expect something from each other, they complete each other, they are both broken, as men they are shadows of a human.

The most overlooked element of the ‘Joker is a veteran’ fan theory is the part where him and his goons impersonated the police honor guard. This means The Joker not only knew close order drill and the manual of arms with a rifle but knew it well enough to teach it to others. The Joker was definitely a veteran.

I never, for one moment, thought the Joker was insane or crazy in this movie. He did act so, but never was so. One thing that Ledger did SO very well, was show that he, in fact, was smarter than Bruce Wayne/Batman. Even if things did not go as Joker planned, he was a master of thinking on his feet, or even just "winging it" as it were. Joker knows enough about how the mind works, to turn any weakness to his advantage. I firmly believe that Joker also knew from the start, or had an idea of whom, Batman really was. I have watched this, out of this trilogy, many, many times and I catch new things, or have had things pointed out to me. And when you piece it all together, Joker really never set a foot wrong. He had more ears in the city than the rest of the crime lords and the police combined. Ledger did such a great job, I wish we could have seen him do this one more time, may he rest in peace. I liked him as an actor before this, but this movie, this part, just, wow. He proved with this roll he was truly one of the greats.

There is one element, however, that people keep forgetting when they theorize about Ledger's Joker, and that he was, once, already incarcerated (or in "therapy") in Arkham.
Don't forget they end Batman Begins with Gordon telling Batman that a bunch of inmates are still running wild through the city, and one of them had "a taste for the theatrics, like you" and presented him a Joker playing card in an evidence bag.
This would mean that Joker was once already caught and captured by authorities and then deemed mentally unfit enough to be sent to Arkham... so what changed after the escape? Why was Ledger's Joker suddenly such a fearsome and unbeatable foe after his escape as opposed to before it? Can you imagine THIS Joker being taken alive by normal authorities if he didn't want to?
Don't forget that when the inmates escaped Arkham in Batman Begins, they did so under cover of a city-wide fog filled with scarecrow gas. All the reacquired inmates and criminals of Arkham, as well as the police force and any Gotham citizen exposed to the gas in those areas of the city, were given the antidote to dispel the gas's effects on their mind, but what about Joker or other inmates that managed to AVOID capture? Were they able to get access to the antidote? Would they even be in the right state of mind to LOOK for said antidote or understand what it is or their current situation?
The entire theme of the comic book character Joker is "the difference between me and you is one bad day", which does not generally mesh well with how real and complex real world mental issues work, but what if Ledger's Joker had a "one bad day" as well? What if being exposed to Scarecrow's toxin and being let loose onto the city streets full of Chaos was Ledger's Joker's "one bad day"?
Thematically it would still fit with the comic characters as well, as in the comics Joker made his full transformation by allegedly falling into a vat of chemicals that he fell into while fighting Batman in the Red Hood costume, but in this case Ledger's Joker would have been exposed to Scarecrow chemicals there were unleashed into Gotham specifically because of Bruce Wayne's connection to the city and the League of Shadows' plans to make it an example to society. This would explain Joker's fascination with Batman in the Nolanverse, especially if Joker was part of the infected crowd that witnessed Batman flying overhead appearing to them like a demon while suffering the effects of the toxin.
To be clear, I'm not disproving the former military theory at all, in fact I think that's still a probability to his character, but I also feel there was an additional event or catalyst between his former life or service and the state we see him in The Dark Knight that we did not see that truly, and irreversibly, weaponized his mind and motives into becoming the fearsome agent of chaos we see in the movie.

Maybe while he was being interrogated and tortured by his captors while still a military member , the group that was responsible for torturing him brought in the scarecrow as "the guy who gets things done" to do it cause the smile had no effect on him and that's why he keeps changing his story about how he got them cause scarecrows poison had wiped his memory about it in an extremely violent way by making him imagine all sorts of scenarios about how it happened. Scarecrows poison works on people's fears and at that point in time his biggest issue was him being afraid of them cutting him some more or the pain associated with it? just a thought. To further point out the "plan" angle... It wasn't in his plan to get caught and tortured and maybe he resents people with plans.

Well, no. The gas doesn't need a cure. Rachel and Batman needed it because they got a very high concentration of the gas. A deadly amount. But when Bruce was exposed to it during the league of shadows, he didn't need an antidote. The same could be said about everyone else. Everyone would eventually just get over it in time. Him having a military background also doesn't make any sense since there would be a data bank on people who enlisted, dead or alive. His fingerprint would probably be in there and from what we saw, he hadn't tampered with his fingerprints. I think the Joker's true story was with his father being an alcoholic but he made the scars himself. He ran away before his fingerprint would be recorded anywhere and before he was a teenager (as that's when many people's faces actually begin to change and whatnot). He might have also just been born a genius. An expert planner. He had plenty of time to train and do whatever he needed. I think he realized that he needed to be seen as the villain to save his city. But it's a far fetched theory with little to no proof

His 'Bad Day' comes in the form of an encounter with a Middle Eastern Shop Keeper who yells at him for holding up the line or having an empty Debit Card, which triggers a Flashback... Joe proceeds to full beast mode on this Innocent man and beats him half to death (or farther)
he's Clearly 'broken' so he's not 'responsible.
He's still 'Joe' so he's easily Taken alive...
Arkham isn't all Rogues Gallery Level Villains, so that is where he lands...
As he serves out his term his Metamorphosis starts to Kick in... and he's less and Less Joe Carr as the days progress
By chance a well/poorly timed card game Finds him Holding a Joker Card as he sees one of Bruce's Escapades play out on the News... and he recognized the shared psychosis in which he decides it 'that guy' can become 'Fear incarnate' as a Bat... I too can become 'Chaos Incarnate' as this wild card, This Joker...

I have always had this feeling that this version of the Joker allows himself to be this extensively analyzed becasue he is simply a badly written character, possibly based on a severe misunderstanding of a mental illness. Rewatching Nolan's takes on Batman I could never get rid of this feeling that these are not good movies, they just try to be as dramatic and shocking as possible, while all the characters are really just one-dymensional cutout shapes that the writers themselves did not at all think out as thouroughly as the random analyst on youtube or any fan for that matter. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love Willarious's analysis and I wish he would upload more frequently; I just really don't like these movies and don't think there's actually this much to analyze in them...

A method of rationalizing the horror he saw as a military agent by showing just how frail civility is in Gotham. He wants others to see & experience what he went through.

That bit reminded me of something... I dunno if you've ever seen the Clint Eastwood movie Unforgiven, but I once read a psychoanalysis on Eastwood's character in it. He plays an apparently reformed gunslinger, who's put his past life of drunken violence and killing behind him, to settle down with his wife and children. But agrees to one last hit job, just to earn some money for his kids.
At various points in the film he alludes to a deeply rooted fear of death... He talks about being haunted by the image of a man he shot through the mouth, who's teeth came out the back of his head, and in a feverish state he says he saw what he calls the "Angel of Death", with snake eyes, and his deceased wife's face being devoured by worms.
To cut a long story short, the analysis concluded that his fear of death is what ultimately drove him to become a killer in the first place. In his mind he became the Angel of Death, the very thing he feared most of all, because it was the only way he could have power over it.

Something else I just realized that's similar between Bruce Wayne/Batman and the Joker is that neither of them like to/want to get too close to anyone. If both characters suffer from PTSD, then it makes sense.
Bruce lost his parents -- 2 people he deeply loved and was close to -- and avoids close, interpersonal relationships. He, even, keeps Alfred at a certain distance because he knows what it's like to lose someone you dearly love and doesn't want to feel that pain again. Working from the soldier with PTSD theory surrounding Joker from the Dark Knight, that may explain why he doesn't get too close to others -- whether he's working with them to blow up the city or his courting them, i.e. Harley Quinn. He knows what it's like to lose or be betrayed by those close to you who are "part of the plan". He doesn't want to feel that pain of or stabbed in the back by those in whom he placed his trust.
They're both men in pain with very different coping mechanisms.

This version of the Joker is definitely ex-military/possible CIA or FBI. Throughout the whole movie he is constantly applying the tactics of Maneuver Warfare. Best demonstrated when he attends the party where the Gotham elites aand Rachel are in attendance. He has identified the targets (batman) center of gravity aka attacking large groups of pedestrians to draw him out. He then sets and maintains favorable terms of battle aka he holds those same innocent people at gun or knife point knowing full well batman won't risk their lives to do something crazy to capture the joker. Lastly, he finds and exploits the gap in his enemies strength, he does this by taking Rachel hostage and dropping her out of the window. This is a huge moment for both batman and the joker, because batman without hesitation, jumps from the building to save Rachel, no doubt whatsoever. In doing so batman has just left an entire room of Gothams most elite and innocent citizens with the murderous Joker. Batman has shown to the Joker what he truly cares about, what he is willing to give up to save. It's so subtle but such an amazing scene, this movie is just incredible to re-watch and catch these little things.

@Abigail Slaughter Leto's portrayal of the Joker was off putting, but I didn't hate it. For context, I took my younger brother with me to see Suicide Squad in theaters. God, do I miss theaters. Anyway, after the movie I asked him if he liked the movie, which he did. Then I asked about the Joker. He said he didn't like him. I expected as much, but when I asked why, he said that he scared him. My brother is one belt below black belt, and at that time he was a few belts lower, but not by much. He isn't scared of much at all. Leto's Joker scared him because he didn't act like a guy, he acted like a literal animal, stalking prey, growling, and acting territorial with Harley. And man was he mean. The off screen "method acting" aside, Leto took some serious risks with the character that makes him stand out, for better or worse, from every other actor before or since.

My own theory on the Joker is that he’s a self aware comic book character. He thinks nothing of killing other people because he knows they are not real. He doesn’t fear death because he knows he will always come back. He knows that there are, and even participates in creating more, different and conflicting back stories. He knows that they never really happened. He has never been anything but The Joker and he’s perfectly aware of it.
He’s the only self aware person in his entire universe. As such, he has unlimited power within that universe but he’s also terribly lonely. He wants just some other self aware person to just talk to.
He suspects that Batman might also be self aware but he wants proof. It is strictly against Batman’s code to kill another human being. To actually kill someone, the Batman must be self aware enough to override his code. He’ll only break from the archetype and actually kill the Joker if he is real person and not just another comic book character. And so he’s trying to find a way to provoke the Batman into actually killing him.
He’s not worried about dying because he already knows he somehow come back.
He said as much in the Injustices storyline. In injustices, the Joker chooses to provoke Superman instead of Batman. Superman doesn’t waste anytime at all in just killing him once and for all. Before Superman does kill him, the Batman asks him why he went after Superman, the Joker tells him that he always loses against Batman. He decided to try playing the game with the setting on easy for once. Going from Batman to Superman isn’t setting the controls on easy if the goal is to over power and defeat the opponent. It is though if the goal is to provoke the opponent into killing.
Superman shows up and punches through the joker’s chest into his heart and out his back killing him. He wins.
And he comes back because it was in just an alternate universe with just an alternate timeline.
In the main storyline, he’s alive again and still looking for ways to provoke Batman into killing him.
Superman was easier because he. is scripted to behave as if he actually cares about other people. But that’s why him killing the Joker doesn’t really count.
Batman’s character isn’t scripted to behave like he cares about other people. That’s part of the reason that the Joker thinks Batman might also be self aware. The Joker feels no connection with other people and knows it’s because they aren’t real. He sees that Batman likewise feels no real connection with other people but suspects that instead of that just being the way he’s scripted, it might be because Batman can sense that other people in their world aren’t real, even if he isn’t consciously aware of it.
The Joker’s challenge is to somehow get Batman to act against the script. Batman is scripted to behave like he cares about the code and the mission. He acts to force a situation where Batman has to choose between the code and the mission. The code is internal whereas the mission is external. The code is more central to the character than the mission. And so only by an act of free conscience choice can Batman act against the code.
In the event that Batman ever does actually kill him, he’ll somehow come back just like he always does. But when he comes back that time, things will be different. Instead of fighting with Batman, he will reach out to Batman as another lost soul who trapped in an existence where no one else is real.

If you become intimidated by her, she discards the prospect of talking to you. Both because she finds the lack of strength irritating and because she dislikes terrifying people who've done nothing wrong. It's not as satisfying that way.
Her only friends are those who are willing to stand up to her. She treasures them, and refuses to spend time with those more spineless. Both because she'll hurt them emotionally (and she doesn't want that) and it's tiring to constantly hide all her emotions.

Dotto was disowned because he was hard to take care of, so he is deeply loyal to his friends, swearing never to give up on those he loves no matter how hard it gets. Speaking as a terrifying DC villain however, if I wanted to cure Joker, I would lock him in a very serene, safe environment, and give him doses of mushrooms, lsd, mescalin, and peyote daily. The goal would be to make him trip so hard for so long it effectively erases his mind, and then to let him naturally build a new personality slowly, over time, (hopefully as a less frightening and violent person).

Actually, that's probably less an artistic take on the character's mental health state, and more of a take on the actor/director/prop master just having some common sense. Rule number one when dealing with prop weapons: Always treat them as if they're not props (ask Brandon Lee). Even a "blank" fired when pressed to the temple can be enough to seriously injure and even kill someone. The only real difference between a blank and a regular bullet, is that the blank doesn't have the projectile tip that's usually wedged into the casing. The gun powder that provides the force pushing that projectile tip is still present in both which means at the very least you're going to have muzzle flash that can severely burn skin, hair, and clothing - also if the barrel is pushed into softer flesh (like the temples of the skull) then that means you have a blast chamber still has to have somewhere for the controlled explosion of the gun powder to go to when it ignites. The explosive power is going to need SOMEWHERE to vent and in that match-up even just a few millimeters of hardened steel, is going to beat out the squishy flesh of your body every time.
tl;dr - somebody who might have taken a few classes on how to be a shrink, or may have some complex film theory for why the Joker had his fingers positioned in a certain way, but for all they know Heath Ledger the actor might just have been a little leery to have his brains splattered all over prop bedpans. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

My avoidance was so severe that I was hospitalized, in the psych ward at 24 and I didn’t tell the doctors what had happened to me. I told them I was sad my cat died and that’s why I was suicidally depressed. An astute psychologist called my parents and asked what the hell had really happened to me and figured out immediately that it was PTSD. I would’ve never told them, because I didn’t want to talk about it. Even though my life had fallen apart. When I watched that movie I totally *got* the joker, even though he was horrible. Something terribly unjust happened to that character and that informed his dim view of humanity. That’s a broken personality as opposed to one just innately devoid of empathy. This is my new favorite youtube channel. I went to college for forensic psychology, and we did a character diagnosis for Miles in Sideways (2004)-one we were given grades on, but she never returned our papers and I LOST ALL OF THAT WORK BECAUSE WE HAD TO HAND WRITE IT-and I made a whole ass list of films that I wanted to do this sort of thing with.
I also follow the headcanon that the Joker is a veteran-in the interrogation scene, it can go both ways that he would know what getting his own head slammed into a table would do to him cognitively from experience as a POW or regular old crime shit. I kinda err on categorizing him as a garden variety sane person who lost the will to care about anything but sending a message. He says he's not crazy, and he isn't. He's just good at leaning into the "look" he's going for. Embracing the Glasgow smile until it's all people will remember about him. The crazy makeup and the scar that he makes up stories about.
It's a scare tactic. The look puts people way off guard because who in their right mind would wear clown makeup 24/7 and not fear death. Of course he doesn't fear death. He probably knows what it feels like; or at least close to it. That doesn't make him crazy. Just apathetic.
From a production standpoint, the interrogation scene is my favorite in the whole movie for several reasons, but mostly for the way it's lit. The way Christian Bale's eye's are obscured to the point that the light reflecting on them make it look like he's a frickin bat (watch that scene with your eyes unfocused and you'll see what I mean) and then for Heath Ledger's performance and insistence that Christian beat the shit out of him for real because I don't see how they could have filmed that otherwise and still feel that intense.

The Joker (in most incarnations) is basically depressed. He's suicidal. The world as he sees it is chaotic and harmful; so he tries to shape the world to that view.
What he wants is to stop living in that world, and the only way he can do that is for Batman- the representation of 'order'- to kill him, and make his existence orderly/rational. But Batman won't do it.

    • @merlith4650
      @merlith4650 3 роки тому

I disagree. Being depressed doesn't mean you commit mass murder.
In MOST incarnations of the joker he is indeed your usual depiction of a "psychopathic" self-aware serial killer. If anything, it's only some few recent depictions that interprets him more as a mentally ill broken person who seems "not quite there".
He himself is an agent of chaos and harm. Most of his "issues" are purely defined by his own egocentric worldview and anything that insults this ego. And has been repeatedly depicted as a compulsively violent sadist who will inflict unnecessary suffering on others for the sole purpose of his own entertainment that served no purpose or "message" to society.
He can't be defined as "suicidal" in most cases. Sure, he does things that can get him killed.. But that doesn't make him suicidal. For the same reason you can't define a soldier, a terrorist, a drug addict or a daredevil like a skydiver or mountain climber as "suicidal" just because what they are doing can kill them. They are not doing what they are doing because they are driven by a "I want to die"-mindset. instead, they are careless to death because of a strong ideaology, a sense of serving a important purpose, or simply because their desires and pleasure "kick" outweighs their fear of death. But this is fundamentally different from a truly suicidal person who doesn't want to live.

He's ostracized himself from social interaction. This one can go a few ways, like he's trying to convince himself that people are fucked up like him. Or that he's trying to make everyone morally equal. I like this interpretation of the Joker because he's so vague but so specific. You never really know what he wants. The Joker is, in some perspectives, a "reincarnation" of Sun Tsu. He doesn't meagerly deceive to gain the upper hand in relation to a short term objective but uses deception on a strategic level to conceal long term objectives, misinform the observer concerning the strategem he is employing in order to lead the enemy into responding with the wrong playbook move and make it impossible to predict where he's going to turn up next and what he's going to do. This is good generalship. Speaking from the experience of someone very close to me, it's also one of the hallmarks of PTSD when the victim has reason to conclude that society is complicit in his or her abuse.

@Ricardo Santos yep ... so think about Batman/Bruce Wayne...
      Why were his parents killed?
      Robbery right?
Now ask yourself this what is the motivation for 95% of crime?
Acquiring money. With 5% being crimes of compulsion.
      Hookers? Money
      Drug dealers? Money
      Murder for hire? Money
      Theft? Money
      So on and so forth...
Now what kind of economic system does Bruce Wayne support and advocate for?
A money based economy right? Billionaire Bruce Wayne... (yes capitalism and communism are both money based systems one is private business ownership the other is state business ownership both are In the business of making money)
So Bruce Wayne supports the very system that caused his parents murder and all the numerous criminals he fights as Batman...
A never ending cycle for him...
Now if Gotham city used a Resource Based Economy where the acquisition of wealth was no longer the motivation for people but instead bettering themselves and the rest of society was the driving force and the citizens were give the goods and services they want and need free of cost... they would have a reduction of crime by 95% and Batman could focus solely on the true psychopaths (arsons, pedophiles, rapist, serial killers) he could make a bigger impact while using fewer resources and and energy...
      TL;DR
Batman/Bruce Wayne is a major contributor to the system that breeds the same type of criminals that killed his parents

The most compelling stories in Literature are often where the protagonist and the antagonist are versions of each other mirroring each other's goals (similar) through rather different or opposing means. Like two sides of a coin, one is actually as important as it is the other. And like a boxing match, trading jabs until the final showdown where one appears victorious over the other (as in conventional stories where the good wins over evil), or the complete opposite, or a stalemate with a twist. The success and poignancy of the story is measured on how equally match a protagonist is to his/her antagonist. Thank you for a great dissection on the movie and its main characters!

The affective traits include a lack of remorse and/or guilt, shallow affect, lack of empathy and failure to accept responsibility. The lifestyle behaviors include stimulation-seeking behavior, impulsivity, irresponsibility, parasitic orientation and a lack of realistic life goals. Antisocial behaviors include poor behavioral controls, early childhood behavior problems, juvenile delinquency, revocation of conditional release and committing a variety of crimes" - Psychology Today (2016)
He meets all of those traits

Batman is what Anna Freud clasified as "identifying with the attacker". He became what he feared (the darkness) in order to never fear it again and exert some control over his trauma (how vulnerable he felt when his parents died). He combined it (unconsiously) with another defence mechanism, called splitting, where he devided people into two absolute categories (good & bad) and chanelled his agressive relationship with fear towards criminals, in order to justify his vigilanty behavior while making sure he never slips.

My impression was that this Joker had military experience, maybe even Special Forces. Everything looked so chaotic but was well planned and ececuted on point. Surely not a continuation of the Joker from the reboot.

@@jameson1239 No, it's not a ASPD symptom. There's the comorbidity subject thou. When diagnosing the joker you could hardly think in a single diagnosis.
But since this video is about Ledger's joker, we need to point out that he doesn't seem to hallucinate or have any trouble processing reality, unlike Phoenix's Joker.

This vid was one of the most interesting things I've come across since I don't know when. You earned this subscriber with taking something I've held near and dear to me since I can remember from my youth up til present day and given me new additional insight. Granted I don't think it was ever much of a reach to conclude that Bruce and Joker are opposites sides of the same coin. But the rationalization of Jokers character steming from the horrors a soldier endured and how his skills are being used still is genius and something I can't un-see nor find fault in. I look forward to checking out the rest of your work.
    Edited due to illiteracy.
Hell you even made wanna use big words.

Let's gooooooooo. Finally someone who understands psychology talking about this. Also you think Joker has ASPD? As far as I'm aware one of the main parts of ASPD is a pattern of extreme impulsivity to a point where one can't make any plans ahead because of it. That's like the opposite of the Joker.

PTSD vet is also what I got from the movie. Alfred explains how he recognizes people like the Joker from his own service. It would have been an interesting movie if it was about Joker vs Alfred rather then with Batman.

Man, egocentricity is not the same as egoism. Egocentricity is an inability to consider others besides yourself. Egoism is not so - one can consider others and manipulate them to own benefit, and that would be highly egoistic but not egocentric at all.

I love the military theory because there’s nothing more contradicting than the military. Most veterans who deployed to Iraq have told me they were happy to fight for this country but later had second thoughts regarding the purpose as to why they were there. They even showed a lot of sympathy for the people they killed saying they were fighting for their own just as the US military was. At least 7 have told me the purpose of the war was a lie but they fought for their brothers. That duality has to mess with anyone’s head.

This over psycho-analysis is all well and good. However there is a simpler explanation for the Joker's apparent Madness. Or psychopath as you will. His apparently erratic Behavior and his desire to laugh at everything is stemming from his knowledge that he is not real. The knowledge that every horrible thing that he does and that has perhaps happened to him if he has a backstory at all is fictional. The Joker like Deadpool is one of those fictional entities that is written to know that they are fictional. There are many instances in the comic books the cartoons the animated and the live-action movies short period of just a few seconds where they interact with the viewer or the writer Etc. The Joker does this as well. If the Joker is not inherently evil. If the Joker is not inherently insane or psychopathic. Then how would he cope with being the bad guy in a story in which he knows he has no choice in any of the horrible actions he takes. Or that he's simply not real and nothing he's doing is real. In a way it's kind of funny. And that's the Joker's entire persona. It's all a sick joke his existence everything he does the world the universe the Multiverse in which he lives all of its fictional it's not real. He's the Joker and his entire existence and that of everyone and everything around him is the joke. The Joker Is even capable of going farther in breaking the fourth wall than Wade Wilson is. The Joker is aware of all the other Jokers and all of the movies and comic books and cartoons and animated series and animated movies live action or otherwise. Is even aware of all the different backstories involving himself all the versions of himself.
