  • Today we're doing a psychological analysis of Fight Club. How does it match up with the facts of Dissociative Identity Disorder? What does it even mean for a personality to split? I answer these questions as well as show how Fight Club illustrates one of the most foundational principles in Carl Jung's psychoanalytic theory. #tylerdurden #mbti #characteranalysis

    I find his relationship with the girl extremely fascinating.
    From her perspective, she has an extremely bipolar boyfriend that acts like a total a-hole half the time, and an impulsive child the other half of the time.
    He spends all night boning her and then acts like he doesn't know her the next morning.
    I kind of wish they went deeper into that.

      @MrGunboat78 I should clarify though, this does not mean I don't like the movie, far from it. The movie just glosses over most of the message Tyler was trying to convey, plus the whole bit about Paraffin "Never, ever works for me."
      For me, the ending of the book changes everything about the story, I would have loved to see a Director's Cut version of the movie where they kept it true to the book. It's not as flashy as the movie, but it makes more sense.

    • @NothingButTheWin
      @NothingButTheWin 4 роки тому +34

      @@river7874 Hard, HARD disagree there. Fight Club is one of the rare instances in which the movie is actually better than the book. Not just in terms of enjoyableness but also sense. It makes more sense for the Narrator and Tyler to meet on a plane, rather than a nude beach, which seems almost random. And in terms of the ending, the movie provides an ending to the whole sequence of events. Tyler was created by his brain to save him, and he was saved, but as soon as he didn't need Tyler anymore, he kills him. By saying that Tyler is going to come back means that the events of the story are almost irrelevant, as Tyler has taken over the existence of the Narrator and it doesn't matter what he does anymore. Tyler is much better suited as a means of improving the life of the Narrator, rather than a rogue part of his mind just taking over, regardless of his well being.

    my aunt had dissociative identity disorder. i dont remember what was the trigger or what made here switch but her "other half' as what we grew to call it, was much more disorganized then her and loved music. i guess think of a punk rocker kid.
    by day a hard working person who may have had a bit above mild case of OCD. and some times buy night i guess a "wild child". her birth name was Barbra and here other name was Sam. i do know that they communicated via letters and notes and i do know that Barbra is not aware when Sam is out but Sam vaguely remembers things when barb is out.
    imma go ask my mom about her when she wakes up. its like 7am here.
    Edit: what my mom said:
    my mom said she first noticed Barbra's switch when there dad would abuse them. mom said she thought it was a super hero kind of thing. like a secret identity. i knew my biological grandfather was abusive but never to that degree. i knew he died from alcohol poisoning tho. this is just my assumption, i think sam would come out when barb would get overly stressed?
    i did not mention it before but my aunt Barbra killed herself. witch is strange because of my Theory of overly stressed trigger. my mom did not say how she died, and i did not want to push it.
    I doubt anyone will read this, but I thought you know it might be a bit interesting if anyone did.

      Interesting read, as I have dissociative identity disorder among many other things.
      I don't know what triggers your aunt had, but I do know mine and I used to come out when my alter was either in danger, too stressed or when he just wasn't able to do things that had to be done. During the turmoil of our life, I managed to get out a lot and basically start my own.
      He could never remember what happened, when I was out and I could experience everything when he was in control. I don't know how or exactly why, but when I get angry and the anger comes out it comes out combined with "super strength".
      Long story short, my alter had been living with depression for 24 years and about 6 years ago he decided to completely give up. As I wanted to keep on living, he gave me full control and we can still communicate with each other but I leave him be. (Different from talking to yourself, I can talk to myself like everyone does or my alter and so could he)
      Don't know what else to tell, but if you have questions don't hesitate to ask and I will try to answer them for you.

As a fan of the book and the film, it has long been my assessment that Tyler evolved as a result of sleep deprivation. ISFJs don't use NI they use SI ( detail orientated, repetition via habits, familiarity, relating to past experiences and ) While Tyler would be an NE user ( ideas, possibilities, bigger picture, seeing through people and information ) But that's only if they're opposites.

He isn't extremely disagreeable but he isn't anywhere near above average unless you're directly standing in the way of his goal. Look at the scene where lou beats him up, he could have reacted in a way more confrontational way but that isn't his style.

    As an introverted intuitive type who suffers from depression, I'm telling you that stimulation and regulation is *everything* . Having proper sleep, proper nutrition, spending time alone with yourself doing self care like bathing or exercising, and stemulating your extroverted functions by initiating external interaction has to be a part of your daily life. If you skimp on any of these it's a recipe for disaster. Its not an easy life because you have to be receptive to life while simultaneously and adequately giving yourself space and time to rest and recharge. Abuse of drugs or alcohol only makes these functions worse because they numb your extroverted feelings and intuition both so at the end of the day you can't think or feel anything. Good luck living a functional life once the numbness kicks in.

      I think what the narrator does is very effective. Basically accepting the fact that he is Tyler; accepting the fact that he is a contradiction. Once he realizes that Tyler's 'dangerous' thoughts feelings and attitudes are his own, he can be a more well rounded individual. His aggression can animate his morals and his morals can give appropriate boundaries to his aggression. Does that make sense?

      You're going to half to be more specific. My personal experience was needing one public/ social personality in order to function in day to day life (the "Tyler", if you will) meanwhile, my other personality was only allowed "out" when I was alone, or with one or two close personal friends. This balanced well enough for a long time, but got to the point where my "narrator" personality was completely repressed. This eventually exploded and I had a complete mental meltdown that lasted for years... I'm still recovering 8 years later. At present, I cannot give you an answer, but what I have been doing for some time now is getting approval from both of us before acting or talking, instead of giving full control to one or the other. This seems to be working pretty well for now, but time will tell.

Are you projecting yourself onto what you don’t like in others? There is your repressed shadow. Hypocrisy thy name is you. Now it’s easier to forgive others and see what you yourself need to work on instead of denying it. To be unconscious of it in yourself is to have little to no control over it.

  • @Psiberzerker
    @Psiberzerker 3 роки тому +1

    Tyler Durden is the Id. The narrator (Ed Norton's "Character") is the alter. He doesn't actually do anything, he watches Tyler do it. The other characters don't talk to him, they don't see him, because he's not there. Tyler is. When we see Ed Norton, they're seeing Brad Pitt. That's how he's able to pull off all that, because the only force that could stop Him is "Jacks' Spleen." That character doesn't even have a name. That's how insignificant he is. He's the audience, the 4th wall, which is why he basically only talks in Narration. He's Jack's Conscience, and he's ignored throughout. All those meetings he went to were Tyler Durden looking for emotionally broken people to recruit. Which is why the nameless narrator had no idea what he was doing there.

    • @Psiberzerker
      @Psiberzerker 3 роки тому +1

      All of this is interpretation. Nobody's theory is more or less valid, because it's written that way. The author intentionally gave us just enough information to interpret, without ever actually telling us everything. However, the narrator is an unreliable narrator. From the start, it's surreally told to get you in the mindset of a delusional, so we the readers can't tell reality from hallucination. So, chose your own reality, ultimately it's fiction to begin with.

    This is brilliant and hilarious--brillarious, if you will--but I'd really like to hear a bit more about how Durden's EXTREME self-destructiveness is presented as an entirely positive trait, culminating in his final act of self-actualization and -redemption by shooting himself in the face. In a certain light, it could be seen to mirror the ascetic practice of many monastic orders, both East and West, but on the other hand--God damn, dude. If you ever get a minute to comment further on this specific aspect of Durden/Narrator, I'd really love to hear it. Thanks, man!

    There's TOTALLY evidence of childhood trauma though. He discusses WITH Tyler his father's abandonment and how he believes he was impaired by being raised exclusively by a woman. This adds to the contrast between Tyler and Jack because he almost seems like someone who would have been raised exclusively by a man, which would definitely be something jack could dream up while dwelling on his own father's abandonment and what he could have been like.

    I just watched and rewatched this video. It's interesting and yet I feel like I still do not grasp the consequences of this concept in its entirety, but I am not willing to blame it on your explanation. When is something becoming such a _shadow_ and not just something that is simply out of character?
    When I take myself as an example regarding a trait many fail to understand, then it is my introversion. I feel very much like a caged tiger in society and I get really irritated by people getting too close to me, including noise, and even smell. I can survive for months without seeing another human, but I can get overly excited afterwards when I meet someone I like. The one thing many get wrong is that I need mental stimulation and thus like talking to others, but I hate small-talk and having to listen to trivial matters that do not affect me in the slightest.
    I can't really see myself having a repressed extroverted function as my shadow, even though I can get overly excited in some rare conditions (which aren't that rare at the moment thanks to lockdowns)...

There was a character, O'Detta, who was a very calm and kind person with a presitged place in society by day, but her other half would take over at random times, Detta, and was only comparable to a total maniac, who would steal thousands of dollars of jewelry in situations ridiculously dangerous and would try to even kill anybody that she was threatened in any way by. Also meets up with the childhood trauma causing the split in personality, because of an event in her past that I won't spoil, which was covered greatly in the book and showed the first moments that she had appeared.

Everyone thinks you're the leader. The cult house is in your name. You're going to pay for all of my consequences. Knowing what I know about DID, I thought it was a little strange how the director made it seem like Tyler was developed near the time when the protagonist first decided to 'hit bottom'. But then, there were no mentions of previous symptoms. Anyway, just started the video and excited to learn more.

In the movie Tyler and Marla are never together in the same room with the narrator. And they, so to speak, mind f*ck the narrator when they have sex. Also refer to the scene where Marla walks into traffic on her way to sell the clothes she stole at the laundromat. It would also explain why there is no complaint when she attends the testicular cancer group - she is not there! And in another group, the group leader comes up toe the narrator and talks to him while he is hugging Marla. On a second consideration, she comments on the fact that he is by himself.
    Could also be read as a take on the id, ego and superego. Fight Club is extremely complex.
