  • Targeting California Halibut from a kayak in the Fall can have its own special set of challenges, but remains highly rewarding.

    Nice catch and cool video.
IDK how people think pulling a hook from a shark's mouth is so easy; and on a kayak. Should be fine right? What's the worst than can happen? -_-
    You did great man

I think it would be a good idea to invest in some needle nose pliers to at least try and get the hook out of the fishes throat Before just cutting the line on every fish sometimes, it comes out pretty easy. Like the content, keep up the great work👍

Ripping single hooks out of shark's and fish's mouths and throats does far more harm than leaving them in place where they rust out in three days...and I never use treble hooks or non-ferrus hooks...

@@fishingexpectations how sure they will rust in two days not talking smack at all lets share knowledge i but different types of hooks in a cup of ocean water on my boat left for 3 months barley any rust rust maybe but defebtly not breakable I also have hooks in my tackle box that i have used over and over dont rinse they even get the extra oxygen for russting but still wont break so I dont see why people say it will rust out of the fish's mouth

@@rafwhy9888Definately depends on the hooks for sure...all hooks are not the same...also there are studies that have indicated that fish mortality is reduced when deep hooks are not removed (Mason and Hunt, 1967, Warner, 1979) or that there is no difference in survival between fish released with or without hooks in place (e.g., Wilde and Sawynok, 2009). Other studies have shown that some fish are capable of expelling hooks that are left in (Schill, 1996, Diggles and Ernst, 1997, Aalbers et al., 2004, Tsuboi et al., 2006, Dubois and Pleski, 2007) although the time between deep hooking and evaluation of retention varies widely among studies. Collectively, the evidence from these disparate studies suggests that injuries resulting from hook removal may be a greater threat to survival than the consequences of line-cutting and hook retention.

I use #3/0 bait hooks that disintegrate in a few days. I experimented with the hooks and a cup of saltwater...I read you often do much more harm wrestling the fish up to the Yak and ripping the hooks out of them...

@@fishingexpectations I dont believe you bro the experiment I mean even is you saw the hook were rusty what does that mean its not going not going to break and fall out its mouth in fact hook manufactures have been making them stronger and stronger lol no metal will rust and break in to pieces salt water or not IDK

@@rafwhy9888 Hooks don't generally break but the barb disintegrates pretty quick and the hook slips out easily. More modern hooks have even smaller barbs than the standard mustad throwaways we used to use so it's pretty simple now... and the hole a 3/0 leaves is large enough even for it to fall out with the barb still intact.

Do you just stuff your freezer full lol? With the videos I’ve seen you probably have over 50 pounds of halibut in the freezer ?

Yeah, yeah, saw you guys out there! It's slowing down a tad as we work our way into the Fall, but then again, you never know...
