This is so good. I was ecstatic when I found this. It’s strange to think I was 25 when this concert happened.Love this video so much. fascinating glimpse into behind the iron curtain. Now I’m 69 years old and it’s weird in a way to hear a song about being alone after 60. In terms of my having only one surviving family member and 3 or 4 close friends left (and church; the Morman Church) I can relate on that. All that being said, I’ve been an Elton John fan since 1972.

You possess amazing insight, and reads like poetry amidst the backdrop of This Magnificent performance. Thank you for sharing that all of us over 60 can definitely empathize with everything you spoke of. Elton himself surely feels a lot of this at this point in his life but he is blessed and probably surrounded by many adoring people unlike many of us who understand what it means to truly be alone in the world and only see their lives through a rear view mirror...

No one; no musician of today would be able to impress an audience with nothing more than virtuoso piano playing and a perfect voice.
In fact, there never has been and, too, will never be a musician who can play the piano better than he can.
No musician of today would be even able to perform a song reduced to the essentials. Because, what to do without autotune?

Not quite true. In recent years, I have seen great artists such as Natalie Merchant, Rhiannon Giddens and Heather Nova sing live with just acoustic instruments in small venues (no hiding place for the voice) and all sounded better live than on record.

I saw this documentary when it was first released ... unforgettable. As Elton performed this, and as I watched the accompanying footage, I wept at the terrible things we do to each other. I had the great privilege to see this performed again in Australia "up close" as he was accompanied by Melbourne Symphony Orchestra ... sublime.

Magic!!!! Absolute magic!!! How music breaks down the barriers and brings people together no matter where they're from, and all this political bullshit goes away that turns people against each other. The most incredible part is where Ray and Elton go onstage in a restaurant and kick ass. Elton's feel and skills are phenomenal, incredible pianist, performer, singer and talent. And much respect to him for going to Russia, when nobody dared!!!

there are many great artists out there I don't even want to name them but this guy Elton John is one of the most amazing artist because he can do with the band do it solo and create on the spot and do things that some artists have never done before it's so baffling , all the styles of music that he has played weather is classical whether it's a ballad whether it's a full-blown rock song he can do it all and there's not many that can do that for this long and stay relevant like Elton.

Actually, Elton and Boney M were the only western artists who played there
before the fall of the Curtain. However, both concerts were only performed in front of the small auditory of Soviet elite. For few more years, nothing else happened.
With Gorbi coming to power, they were followed by Space, Modern Talking,
Uriah Heep, Rainbow, Ingwi Malmsteen and finally Pink Floyd in 1989. And then touring in Russia stopped being exotic.

he was and is underrated in former ussr countries because he was only in russia and russia has never shown this concert on tv. They only informed people that there was a gay singer in England who was popular in his country for unknown reasons. I read that myself in the 90s. in the 80s we didn't even know who Elton John was. Our borders have been closed and only the KGB family members are allowed to leave. So one of them saw Elton abroad and invited through the government.
