    I think if modders can add their own POIs for the game to generate then this may truly be the best bethesda game yet for modders. being able to create hand crafted dungeons of your own and have them seamlessly injected into the base game sounds incredible. Imagine hopping onto the nexus, downloading a couple POI mod packs, hopping onto a random planet, maybe one you've been to countless times before and be met with hundreds of brand new never before seen locations as you explore. This could give the game longevity and replayability that not even Skyrim and Fallout 4 can match.

      They used tools to generate the landmass procedurally during development.
      EVERY game does this. No developer is placing every object manually, but uses things such as height maps or procedural brushes to place objects quickly.
      Oblivion was not "generating" anything.
      Procedural Generation is when the game is generating content during runtime. Minecraft is generating chucks of land WHILE you are playing.
      Oblivion does not. The world was pre-built and doesn't generate a single aspect of the world, it was all predetermined.

    NMS uses a coordinate system that saves key locations like resource nodes and buildings that it seeds the planet with. The locations of those are the same. However, the planet procedurally generates from where you land. Technically you could circumnavigate the planet but it would take forever like days on foot if not weeks real time. What is nice about this system is if you find a good resource or cool building you can always go back to those coordinates. Just don't always expect the terrain to be the same. When you put down a base it kinda hard locks the area around it so it is mostly the same when you return although NMS still has some small glitches with this and the procedural terrain. I've had trees grow out of my base buildings and stuff but for the most part that doesn't happen.

  • @danjal87nl
    @danjal87nl Рік тому +6

    My experience with NMS is that for a big part you are looking for planets that fill a need (be that core gameplay or current meta) and do so without too many negatives. it's the same system from fallout 1 and 2, where you open the world map and click on point for the character to travel to, and if they stop at a non point of interest point on the map then the game will generate / choose from premade map / tileset, sometimes with random encounter / landmark. it works really well in creating an illusion of a very large world back then considering the processing limitation.

    Nowhere in the direct or interviews have I seen that statement about these locked 1km areas around the landing point. Todd did talk about about how planets are stitched together from blocks of procedurally generated terrain, and that points of interest are generated when you first load a planet.
    Which sounds like static seamless planets made with a mixture of procedural tools and handcrafting, not ingame procedural generation. And then handcrafted POI that drop into the terrain interchangeably.
    Also worth noting that there are ingame markers shown well over 1km away, and that Todd talks about fast traveling back to your ship because you can explore very far with a jetpack. At jetpack speeds shown in the gameplay you'd hit a 1km limit in probably 60 seconds which would make fast travel a bit pointless.

    @AlexConnor_ Рік тому +5

    From my understanding Bethesda has used procedural tools to create 1km2 cells of terrain that can be tiled across an entire planet. The same tools would also allow cells to spawn different ground textures, vegetation, rock formations, crystals etc depending on the overpainted biome map.
    Once a planet has been made with tiles and painted with the biome map the terrain is then static, allowing Bethesda to go in and place larger terrain features by hand. Mountain ranges, cities etc. Or smaller fixed items like a Mars rover.
    And each cell/tile has a number of markers for POI, which are handcrafted locations that drop into the landscape interchangeably. Depending on settings for each planet more or less POI will spawn.

    I believe that the way you are interpreting the "endless" planets is correct, as pointed out by other's Starfield may not have the typical black screen that Bethesda is known for, but they do still have loading points. All of the cinematic shots we have seen, such as entering our ship, standing and sitting in the pilots seat of our ship, etc, they are all creative ways of loading things without taking us out of the game itself. So even though people were upset that planet to space would not be seamless, I believe it may still be "seamless" by being a cinematic, which is something I don't actually mind compared to it being a fade to black.

    Edit:
    I know a lot of people are complaining about empty planets. But to be honest, I’m hoping for empty planets. I want them to replicate the feeling of being completely alone on an unknown planet.
    And since I’ll be playing on my series X, I’ll be locked at 30fps. And I truly couldn’t care less. I only really want high frame rate when playing FPS or other competitive games. When it comes to single player games, I just want a smooth and stable experience.

    They figure out the biome and elements based on distance from the sun and the size of the planet, then use pre-generated 1km terrain squares with point-of-interest spots set up on them corresponding with interesting or suitable land shapes... then they add appropriate flora and fauna, and last, as you move within the worldspace, they add their hand-crafted points of interest at the nearest POI spot on the current land piece, and that is saved to your savegame file when you save, so the things discovered thus far are permanent after you save.

    I think the biggest thing to note is that No Man's Sky has 18 quintillion planets, and is made by a pretty small dev team. Starfield has a VASTLY smaller 1000 planets, made by a huge budget developer with hundreds of people working on it, including artists. It honestly makes a lot of sense why they're limiting the planets to an exact number, because it ensures a certain level of uniqueness. Yes I'm sure there will be some repetition, but as a longtime No Man's Sky player (since day 1) this just won't be comparable. We're talking about 18 quintillion vs 1000. The more designers you have working on your game, the more potential there is for variety on this scale. And I will say, having landed on a ridiculous amount of planets over the years in NMS (I am one of those people that loves just landing and exploring as many as I can, I wouldn't be shocked if I have visited at the very least 500 if not many more) I have still found some new assets or at least new variations. And that's with a very small dev team
    The difference between 18 quintillion and 1000, especially in terms of managing procedural content, is insane. It's a nearly unfathomable number. I have very little doubts that Bethesda can pull this off. 1000 planets is quite literally a walk in the park compared to tha
    The thing that keeps most people playing NMS is not that every planet is different, it's actually the gameplay systems. I think Starfield has a very real opportunity to do the former, with every planet being noticeably different as well as including their gameplay systems. And this is becuase they've locked it down to a smaller, exact number. It won't be perfect, but I think the gaps will be much less noticeable

If you enjoy the game, you don't bother refunding if you think its worth the money or you refund it if it bores you shittless after a few hours, its a win win, waiting for a complete stranger's review of the game will not give you the exact information you need to know how a game feels to play, and that does tend to influance if that person likes or hates the game, so just test it yourself and refund it before it releases if its boring as shit.

On top of that, you'll want to explore several more planets which you may find aesthetically unappealing, but you'll need them for resources and base-building purposes. Plus, you'll be forced to visit many more planets for questing purposes. Any more than that would be to find hidden items and locations, but most people will burn out long before that. Because I believe that points of interest can range in size and complexity like some could be entire abandoned ( or even populated ) bases while others could be some old sculpture that we can interact with for some lore. So it would make sense that if there are 1000 POIs then 900 of those are just super simple. And I think a planet will definitely have several, just so that other planets can have less or even none. I would like to mention something about procedural generation when it’s done right.
    Some description of how there are “POI’s.”
    You might’ve heard of 7 days to die. Back then it looked like minecraft, but with zombies.
    But recently, it’s much more than that and actually has a wide arrangement of POI’s they have released for the game, and even big city poi. Which you can even set the percentage of the biomes, poi’s, if you choose to generate the map.
    Speaking of, if you chose to generate a custom map, unlike minecraft being instant, this would take about 10 minutes or so. And then you would be shown the overhead of the map, and you could choose if you want to play on it, or try another generation.
    Not saying anyone needs to play the game now but I would like you all to see how far procedural generation has gone, since I think procedural has come a long way. So even worst case scenario, maybe Bethesda could be adding POI’ spawns overtime just like that game. Or it’ll be predetermined, it’s hard to say.

    In other words we have no clue if it's good or not. And most likely won't be

    The diagonal across a 1x1 square is about 1.4km. So theoretically the player could still be bound to the 1km square that was mentioned previously, right?

    So it’s similar to remnants NG+ in a way.
    Each play through will spawn different vendors/POI i’m assuming.
