    Very helpful indeed. I've been struggling for ages with straight needles and can now make the circular sun I want.

    i always knew you could knit circles but it would be hard to do. I'm so glad I found your video. I was planning to crochet a circle instead but I didn't love crochet as much as i love knitting so i searched and found your video. Thankfully i already bought double pointed needles to practice making socks. Thank you so much for the video ^_^

    I also adore your calm soothing tone and the accent is so lovely Thank You.
    I wanted to make a beret and saw tutorials for them much too confusing. This simplicity really inspires me to begin the beret simply; yet very beautiful with its sectionals.
    Now in can transfer to the circular needles and zoom through it.
    I also love that you’ve graciously added instructions at the bottom of the screen. I did not see a pattern.
    Marvelous I Kindly thank you.

      It helps a lot. Very nicely done. I love the way you do the center.I've made a lot of hats with round tops. I would crochet a mandala and then knit around it. It was pretty but I didn't like the difference in texture.

    Thank you, Karen. I would also suggest that you add a short piece of yarn in a contrast colour at the beginning of the round. This helps keep track of where to change from increase to plain rounds, particularly useful if you later switch to circular needles. Just like you do in your beanie hat instructions, in fact!

    It takes a particular kind of personality to make a vid and fiddle with those sticks, particularly in the beginning rounds; bless you, twice!! You took me back to the first steps I took in learning to work on dpn/s; LOL!! OMG, it was just a mess......I think it took me four tries over four years to 'get it'! it would be nice if the audio was a bit louder and it was done at a slower speed, I know we can change the speed but for some who know how to knit on circular needles and straight needles but want to learn on DPNS it would be nice to be done at a slower speed, I get you're a pro but when you do a HOW TO video, it's meant for us to learn at a slower speed rather than expecting us to follow along and be able to do it at the same time as you. sure, we can pause and rewind but the idea behind a how to video is to teach us in a slow easy way. just a thought from a person whose learning DPNS as well. :)

  • @mirkrovi

    I'm trying to figure out if making this would be easier in knitting or crocheting. DPN's are a bit of a PITA in the beginning, and double crocheting looks great too but it's only slightly easier, but this looks really nice. I guess it depends on the look you're going for. Thanks for the tutorial.

    • @MsVegemitekid
      @MsVegemitekid  7 років тому

      Thank you Mirkrovi. I can only offer that I overcome any PITA possibilities by going at a slow pace with my projects :-D It slows my heartbeat and then I love the enjoyment of each stitch. Small projects like hats still knit up quickly. You'll soon get off the DPNs and onto circular needles if you decide to knit

Thanx so much your instruct is really expert. Can you suggest how to transfer to a circular needle, I need to make it about 12" around and I am so bad with markers, they always pop off. Do you think its intuitive or do you need markers do you think?

    This video was very helpful because I'm actually trying to make a baby security blanket that starts from the center with an elephant head. My instructions tell me to switch to circular needles when I've increased enough stitches on the blanket part but I have no idea how to do that. I'm a beginner and don't know how to interpret instructions unless they're all spelled out for me. I bought a book on knitting in the round so I've figured out that I can just knit onto my circular needles, but then do you knit back and forth or in the round? I've never knitted in the round on circular needles.

    • @MsVegemitekid
      @MsVegemitekid  8 років тому +1

      +Sheryl DeMott Hi, When you have all of your stitches on the straight needle get your circular needle and hold it in your right hand as if it is your other straight needle. Put an elastic band on the end of the circular needle so that the stitches won't come off the other end. Now, knit the stitches from the left hand needle on to the circular needle. When you have all of the stitches on the circular needle bring the both ends of circular needle together with the working yarn on right hand side. Put a round marker on the right hand needle (can be a small circle of different coloured wool so that it marks the beginning of the round). Now join the round by knitting the stitches from the left hand side on to the right hand side thus forming a circle. Keep knitting around, and when you get back to the round marker slip it over to the right hand needle, and continue knitting around (don't turn your work to purl back as you won't have a join in the circle of work). Keep knitting around in circles, and if you are doing stockinette you won't need to purl as you are always knitting on the right side of the work. So the work ends up spiralling around. I explain the circular knitting in the following video (Ignore that it's a hat)   ua-cam.com/video/VYp0U0HfUHk/v-deo.html     Good Luck! :-)

    Hi Karen - can this be done using only circular needles instead of the dpn? Those confuse the bejeezes out of me and I can't find a tutorial on making flat coasters knitting in the round on circular needles. Thanks and Happy New Year!

    • @MsVegemitekid
      @MsVegemitekid  7 років тому +1

      Hi workwithksmusselman, there is a method for doing small rounds called magic loop knitting. You use very long circular needles for that. I don't have a video up but there are many on UA-cam. Other ways you could put the elastic band at the beginning of the round with DPNs so that you know when you're back at the beginning of the round, and each time you switch needles just check that you're not twisting your work. Take it at a slow pace and when you go from one needle to the next check the tension for a nice join. You only need the DPNs for a while until the circle is big enough for circulars. Happy New Year to you too! :-)

    • @BeyondTshirts
      @BeyondTshirts 7 років тому

      Thanks Karen - I think I may have to stick with square coasters. ROFL I've watched the videos with the magic loop and OMG, I got just as dizzy watching those as with the DPNs! hahaha

      +soooooooooozy Hi there, I'm so glad you liked the video. You can make the flat round circle as small or big as you like for your project. If you want it to be bigger then you keep increasing in each alternate round by 9 stitches (1 stitch per section, and there are nine sections to this pattern). I showed the beret that I used the flat panel to make just as an example of what I use it for. I hope this has been helpful :-)

      Hello, If you mean how to close the hole in the middle? You sew that part. Or do you mean how to cast off or bind off?

    Hi there am a newbe to knitting. Just wondering what size of needle and yarn are you using? Could I use any size for these type of pattern?

      Hi SuperShanova, Yes use the recommended needle size that is on the label of your yarn. You can achieve circular results with any type of yarn using this technique 🙂

      +Jayme Engelhardt when you pearl back it is only whilst you are not knitting in the round. When you join the round there is no more pearl stitch because you are not going back and forth. The entire pattern is stockinette. If I've misunderstood what you mean let me know

      Hi Judy, this method keeps the circle flat. Some people just want flat circle for their own reasons, for example at the top of a beret or a table mat

  • @ericbendickson5725

    ONE Criticism. DO NOT KNIT THRU THE BACK LOOPS!!!Simply, instead, knit on LH Ndl before sliding off then knit to form 2. See The Complete Book of Knitting b. Barbara Abbey for reference. Yields NO Purls! (A Purl is created on the front when one knits tbl). You will not get her perfect flat circle. This video is shamefully misleading. All knits are shown clearly in her perfect little flat circle. Heed my advice novice knitters. Thanks for the video anyway, as now I know when to increase.

      It's not intended to be shamefully misleading. I've made some beautiful berets using this method. Thank you for your input regarding the book ; Hopefully it helps people who see your comment :)

      Hi Priti, You could use my video (. How to knit M1 in knitting | How to M1R and M1L | How to M1 increase a stitch in knitting ) and do the points of your star, and then join it to a circle centre....That way you could create some gorgeous stars with different coloured points etc

    • @MsVegemitekid
      @MsVegemitekid  7 років тому

      Also, if you prefer a different centre you can start to decrease each alternate row back to create diamond shapes and sew them together to form your centre
