    Thank you thank you thank you. I have spent the entire day trying to start a pi shawl and could not get it. Your cast on and two needle method are the best. I think I can finally do this thanks to your instructions. Your turning the work and using cues like working position and resting position just make so much sense. You are a wonderful teacher.

      Hi @nancy Morgan, the starting a Musselburgh is what led me to this video. When you are using this to cast on the initial 8 stitches, are you pulling up 8 loops or doing the pull up a loop then do a yarn over as shown in the video? Thank you 😀

    This is wonderful and so easy to follow! Thank you so much for lending your expertise. I'm new to circular knitting and attempting my first pi shawl. At what point can I transition to a single circular needle? Is there a trick to doing so?

    • @SuzanneBryan
      @SuzanneBryan  4 роки тому

      I use double pointed needles or two circulars until I can comfortably fit the stitches one circular. You don't want to stretch the stitches to fit around the circular, they need to travel freely without stress.

    • @SuzanneBryan
      @SuzanneBryan  4 роки тому

      I don't, but you just double the stitches every time you double the rows. calculate the total number of stitches you have and then find a design that will fit. For example if you have 144 stitches, find a design that has a 10 or 20 stitch multiple and it will fit within 140 stitches. You will have to make your increase to 140 to make it work. In a PI shawl, those 4 stitches will not make a difference visually.

    Excellent tutorial, Suzanne. My mother has asked me to make her some round placemats, so I will be putting this to good use very soon unless I decide to use short rows instead. I've tried projects with a central CO before (usually just playing around with ideas in my head), but I didn't know about the double wrap so I'll definitely make use of that. When I've done flat circular projects before, I had problems getting a whole circle's worth of stitches onto my needle, but I didn't think to use 2 needles. That would have to work better. :) Can you also use dpns for this, or are circular needles strongly recommended?

    I have always wanted to do a PI shawl but was a bit intimidated just because of trying to start the center. Now I see how it could be done. Already know how to knit with two circulars as I am, at this moment, finishing two socks on two circulars so I understand what is happening. Thank You Ever So Much. I do have a suggestion. Could you interperet what is happening on this knitter's German channel? It is called Nadelspiel *Stricken&Hakeln mit eliZZZa. She knits some wonderful sock patterns but it is all in German. I watch and I watch but don't always quite catch what she is doing. Maybe you can see what is happening and give a write up of what she is doing. Just an idea. I have asked her if she could do some of her patterns in English. She did two or three almost 6 years ago.

    So the second cast on can be tightened again and again, but the first one doesn’t necessarily tighten up? I just started a top down hat with the first cast on and there is a definite round of elongated stitches which I couldn’t tighten (or maybe I waited too long?

    • @SuzanneBryan

      Hi Maureen, it depends on the stickiness on the yarn, the more the yarn catches on itself the harder it is to tighten. Smoother yarn needs less tightening. And of course, swatch to confirm. Good luck! 😊
