  • Like it or not, electricity as a motive force is here to stay and is only going to get better and more essential as the petrol engine is increasingly banned from cities. Having said that, it's not all doom and gloom as these two machines demonstrate.

I've got two electric pushbikes. It's quicker and easier to get on and go up the shop, throw your groceries in the basket or side saddles and shoot of home again than it is to get your keys get in the car, find a park etc. The future is coming.

I traded my Zero SR yesterday. I had it for three years and it was not reliable. After the latest trip to the service department which lasted 7 weeks, I was done. I’m on a Rebel 500 now. It’ll run forever.

I sure will miss the sound but I can’t deny that having an electric mx would be awesome. Stealth mode through the bush!

Bang on. The small urban machines like the first one will revolutionise city transport for people who aren't fit enough to cycle, or don't want to get hot and sweaty. Love it.

I love electric bikes (and of course ICE bikes) - they aren't noisy, they don't vibrate and rock 'n' roll so they aren't comparable to the machines we have known and loved - but the power delivery and smoooothness is something else....these things are just different, but not necessarily in a bad way.....great piece as ever chaps, lovin' your work - TMF

Nicely balanced presentation without the usual anti-electric diatribes. Certainly a place for e-bikes, we just need to see the prices come down out of the stratosphere to enable purchase by regular folks

Waiting patiently for Elon Musk to surprise launch a Tesla bike at one of his conferences... Their cars are extremely impressive so far as range, performance, and price for performance are concerned. The Tesla trucks are simply astounding - they can almost do Joburg to Cape Town with a 45 metric ton load on a single charge, and a full quick charge takes under an hour - so in the time it would take to unload in Africa... But as with everything electric for the moment, price and weight are a big problem. It's not as apparent with a car driving from point A to point B, but I'm not sure if electric is ready today to race against the best internal combustion engined cars or bikes yet. Give it 10 or 15 years tho... I remember 20 something years ago when I was still in high school electric RC buggies were powered by 7.2v nicad packs driving a "540" brush contact motor. Methanol and gas buggies were far superior in terms of weight and performance. Flash forward to today and almost everything is electric in the RC model aircraft and buggy industry. They're lighter, faster, and more powerful because more time is being dedicated to the development of electric propulsion than to methanol, gas and diesel. Personally I still like methanol and caster oil for model planes because that's what it was about for me, and I still love 2 stroke bikes but change is constant. So hurry up Elon, I'm not getting any younger and I need a Tesla sportsbike 😃👌🏼

How far will it go will always be the problem, till they figure out a way to make a battery last long enough to go far enough to take a long trip.
They all can get you around your town.
But most want to go far.
    I have 2 bicycles.
Can carry them into my house when i get home.
If your battery go's dead, time to push.
Would be cool if they came up with a small solar panel to charge your bike if your stuck out.

Also the trials bike is probably heavy as shit with those batteries. Also trials bikes need HOURS AND HOURS of practice. An hour and a half at a time is not enough to learn the subtleties. Gas tanks can be filled in seconds. Batteries can’t..
