Great vid. It's so helpful watching you go through the process of diagnosing and fixing problems. I am currently getting to the end of restoring my 1990 extended cab 4x4 3VZE which I bought new 30 years ago. Once I got all her bodywork finished into black epoxy primer I liked the color so much I just clear coated right over it. Looks great. I look forward to following this build. cheers
The ultimate hunting truck... trick, suspension, Raptor paint [two tone old school], bed that will haul an ATV and your game... just be creative.. different... the ultimate hunting truck... snow, mud, ... able to tow a small trailer... jon boat on top... auxiliary lights... totally different than anything that is on the road...
I am doing a 93 , standard cab 4x4....I plan to use csrc paints for a desert cammo look myself...22re with lce stroker crank. 35# flywheel and stage 3 clutch. Fullnlce longtube header exhaust....can't wait to run and drive this thing! a lot of interior upgrades from junkyard trips, including bucket seats and a new instrument panel from 4Runners....
LOL yer right the way you work this thing will be ready for a car show when done! I don’t know if you like 4x4in but a nice trail set up would be cool! Leave the tub but shorten it by 12”or so, then fab some cool pipe work like a crawler but more road oriented. Paint could be a tribute to your other ute, tinted red raptor liner, I don’t know if that’s recommended but mmmeeerr Anyway if you stick with Toyotas and Hilux’s everything will be ok!!
This truck is the epitome of buying another man's problems, but you jumped right in and got it pretty much right in short order. Looking forward to this one. I'm looking for a used Tacoma 4x4, but I might have had to pass that one by. That's a bit more than I would want to bite off, but your skill set is much further along than mine, so I'm looking forward to learning a lot on this build.
3.4 engine probally the best one they made. I had 95 t100 with it and now i have a 01 tundra 5 speed with that engine. 315,000 miles , not one problem with the engine. i did replace plugs 2 times and all 3 coils and wires. and an alternator ( at 300,000) ,original clutch. it should be sick in that smaller pickup. looking forward to your build !
Had the same issue with fuel on my 98 xj when I bought it. My dad ended up jumping a wire from the ECM to the injector that was stuck open and boom problem solved. interested to watch this
I'll be the odd man out and say you should engine swap the engine swapped truck. My vote would be for a common junkyard LS based engine. A home brewed SAS would be cool as well.
I like the new project! I had to cut and bend that same throttle cable holder on my 3.4 swap, I'm also running mine with the evap Box and the rear O2 sensor, I think it needs it! I also designed and built a prototype Eaton M90 supercharger from a grand prix gtp to adapt to that engine, that could be a good cheap upgrade! let me know!
Don’t do carpet and leave the bed on it. You could always do a flat style paint on it. Build it like a hunting/daily work rig. Way cool rig. Had no idea 3.4 swap had to have a body lift which in not a fan of at all. Hopefully you leave it the 3.4 and if it had the crossover exhaust behind the engine do a crossover delete.
Never messed with the 5vz but maybe a maf is bad? also to me the fan clutch seems locked, sounds like how Id think it would be if the truck is up to temperature. Looking forward to this project!
Diesel!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It makes a Taco unique and not cookie cutter like the rest. Ya, with your talent, this taco will be a show winner when finished but, it will be a V6 taco............., where as a factory looking diesel makes it so unique that only a handful of people have but every Taco fan wants to have. Cool video and project looking forward to see your madness on this 1.
Just subscribed. Maybe check the 'new' injectors that were put in? Could be over fueling or a stuck open injector. I think keep the 3.4, SAS it, lockers, decent lift, keep the bed (maybe bob it later), black wheels, desert tan bedliner? and have a great trail rig that you can get dirty often and put to work. Your red truck is just so damn nice!
Austin, Toyota cement grey is popular in TX. Also, center console from similar year Runner w/out rear AC, bolts right into floor. I’m running the bucket seats, console, power windows and armrests out of a Runner as an upgrade for my ‘94 PU. It’s almost an SR5. Lol.
I’m 16 and just baught a 91 hilux (Australian pickup) and I’m rebuilding the engine (3L diesel) with a turbo kit and I’m also re spraying it as there isn’t a straight panel on it good way to learn
Dont need the purg valve stuff. Get rear 02 sensor working forsure and check maf make sure it working. Also I bet plugs are fouled due to over fueling I bet plugs fix it up near 100%
will you be trying the doomsday diesel adapter plate this time for a diesel? A trick i have used for years on white paint is Bleachwhite whitewall tire cleaner. rinse it spray a bit then scrub as usual, this method pulls alot of the dead pigment out and the stains from the paint as well. awesome cleaner from the dollar store does well under the hood as well... did he swap the ecm ssems like he shorted it or did a voltage spike????? oh that will polish the rings being that rich. but 180 is nice and even./ nope run it till it defouls the plugs or at least clean em ... the cat will be gacked out as well from all the fuel in it... . on the idle my 3.0 has a issue with the IIC holding it a bit, to test tap the throttle body with something to see if the idle changes.. I think i need to wait on my comments till the end as well your on top of it all. no paint just raptor the body but 2 gal at least an 3 to be safe an the extra will be for the next project. an i think you can use the tint able raptor an add 80ml of paint and color it any color you want.
bro keep the truck as is. the 3.4L motor is actually very nice. good bush beater. you put so much into the tdi truck it would be nice to have a beater truck.
@@austinniemela yeah just beat on this truck and enjoy it. A tdi swap seems like too much of an headache after looking at your build. I'm sure after you put all that effort into that truck you don't want to beat on it.
Ummm, I think it would still be cool to do the diesel swap... but if not yank that motor and rebuild.... or try stuffing the 4. 7 V8 ... that would be cool... if you keep the bed think trail buggy... otherwise build another just change it up some.... your truck..your budget... go for it... if the cab is tweaked... maybe a scrap yard find of a newer model.... Raptor liner I think has a version the actually looks smooth... but either way it's a great choice... any color that is different from everyone else... play with the idea of a two tone...
hmm my 3.4 swap isnt body lifted or have a hood scoop. but this build is sick! you saved it :D Its gonna need the tacoma evap box, i love the 3.4 if you are going to offroad it i would get a factory airbox aswelll i lost a 3.4 due to a open air filter :(
DO A LONG TRAVEL BUILD!!!! A budget kit could be the blazeland kit. Or DIY the long travel A arms! I think if you stuck with torsion bars you could build the whole truck for like 5k. That's including Tires and home built bumpers!
Need to use a code reader that displays live data. Sometimes the computer won’t throw a code but a sensor is clearly displaying false data. My old 98 3.4 would idle high randomly and never threw a code. But when I hooked up to it with live data. You could watch them coolant temp go from 180 to 0 and it would instantly run crappy.
Last time I had a random misfire code, it was the fuel pressure regulator valve. Pulled the vacuum hose off of the valve and fuel dropped out. Swapped it and was good to go. Took me forever to figure it out.
i think you should paint it not raptor liner cause it will look way better and for color i think you should keep it white or paint it a nice lightish grey
canuckguy worried well where should I start ? O I has the body lift already!!! Cheap good power and it’s a V8 !!! Cam it valve springs and send it boost it if he wants to make good power for a reasonable price !!

When you went into the field I could feel that cushy Toyota ride !
This is going to be a great build!!
Minimum 10 minutes for the ECU to display codes. You are 100% correct on how important the coolant temp sensor is to how the engine runs.
The 5vz-fe is a good motor (well at least here in Australia), they go hard.
Dude build what you want. Don't listen to the "build something budget" people. It is your channel.
Good diagnostic work. Fun project. You'll end up rebuilding the truck.
Had the 5vz-fe in my 98 4runner in Canada, the thing started first turn in -30C every time haha. Loved it
Speaking from aus would love to see a low budget pre runner nothing wild just something fun.

Glad to see the new truck build. Curious about Rhino lining the outside. If it works out we may do that on the wife’s ‘95 Wrangler.

You dont need the body lift. Will clear the 3.4 easy with hood bracing trim, or 1.5 body ljft. 3" is massive 😅
Dirt Garage I may drop it down a bit
I have a 92 Toyota 3.4 swap with 3 inch body

Excited for the build!! U should do a mild build..3" lift on 33s...paint it white again..!!👍👍✌

You only have to do a 1in Body lift to get it under there or clearance the hood an inch... The 3in body lift is too much.
Subscribed. Last project turned out badass! Excited to see how this rig turns out🤙🏼
Digging the 650sx sitting next to the tractor! You should do a jet ski build sometime!
Thanks!
Cummins 4bt , U-pol raptor liner ,

hey so make sure all the vac lines are routed correctly, on mine one of them were wrong and it was sucking oil and gas into the intake manifold
