    This battle had everything. Scouting horses that could lay down, and kick to the face. Winged Hussars. Mounted pistoliers followed by a charge. Pike and shot. Flanking maneuvers and tactical retreats. A parting shot at the pursuing enemy. This was awesome!
    I wish Game of Thrones had this level of research, but alas.

    So, to summarize,
    1) the heavy Polish cavalry could not cross the river due to threat of Swedish guns
    2) Polish Light cavalry (Tatars sent as a token of friendship by the Khan to the Polish King) could ride much faster, so they crossed the river and engaged the first wave of heavy Swedish Cavalry.
    3) the Swedes started shelling the river crossing to prevent Polish heavy cavalry from going over and helping the Tatars. Instead, Polish commander send a second group of Polish light cavalry to attack Swedish camp
    4) the second wave of the heavy Swedish cavalry started to advance on the Tatars, who retreat toward the river crossing .
    5) At the river, Tatars turned left and right, forcing the pursuing Swedes to enter the river (they were too heavy to turn as fast as the light Tatars).
    6) Seeing the Swedish riders inadvertently entering the river, Swedish commander halted the artillery's barrage.
    7) Seeing the opportunity, the Polish commander ordered the hussars to engage in frontal assault.
    8) Hussars charged and broke Swedish lines, pursued the survivors toward the camp, where they linked up with the light cavalry already attacking the camp.

    The only thing that kinda irritated me, were those overgrown wings on the Hussards backs. They were WERE big...but not SO big & tall - in fact shorter and bent. PS. Just a quote from the director (Jerzy Hoffman) as I remembered it: "Back then there was no such thing, as computerized special-effects and we learned something very quickly! When you mass so many horses in a restricted place, and start a charge, the earth starts TREMBLING - and that trembling and vibrating resonates so deeply and so hard, it was almost impossible to take a shot, without specially constructed stabilizers for the cameras, plus we could take one or two shots at most, because another thing we didn't know at the time, learning only as we proceeded, is that a cavalry charge turns the grass of the step into MUD - it literally turns the hard step, full of grass, into something urecognizable anymore. Because of it all we took the the decision to shoot all the charge in one sequence with multiple cameras and POV's and then somehow edit it, AND YET! - all this scene was possible only thanks to the skills of the extras on horses. If it wasn't for their ability to ride and - at time - even fake a fall, while being dragged by those horses, we could never make such a scene. We took way too much risks." Imagine doing a scene like that TODAY.

    • @smashtroid6440
      @smashtroid6440 6 років тому +18

      Yeah, because a Pike is good at a distance with many of those said pikes, but become near useless in close quarters. Horses are actually smart enough to figure out NOT to run into a dense formation of men with sharp pointy things, and thus rear up before getting hit, nullifying the cavalry's effectiveness.

    • @2serveand2protect
      @2serveand2protect 5 років тому +43

      No - it wouldn't. Check yourself out "The Battle Of Kircholm" - it's a classic example. You can bet on the fact they COULDN'T stand any attack - not if they haven't previously fortified their positions, the infantry of that time simply had no strenght to resist in an open - FLAT field to a charge against THAT TYPE of cavalry - trust me. Once the "Pancerni" (or "armoured") and the Hussards were on the other side of the river they were FUCKED. ...and - actually - those horses were specifically TRAINED TO SMASH INTO any "dense formation" - the more the better - eases their job. Ever held an infantry-pike in your hands? Tell me - how much can you hold it DOWN, until you loose control over it? Well - this cavalry was spefically designed for smashing STRAIGHT INTO pikemen's formations. Their "linijka" or...how to say say? ...let's go with "war-lance" was LONGER than the infantrymen's "pike" and - most of all - it was BALANCED to be held horizontally. So let's assume you dense the the pikemen formation, their lances would still go through you like a hot butter through knife - the rest of the job was done by the "koncerz", and the weight of the horse, and you be suffocating in mud, before even knowing what happened. The only true defense was to meet them from behind a mud or earth fortification - OR - you could chain your wagons together and held them at bay with your musketeers (if they were any truly good shot - "Cossack style"!...) ...like this?... as soon as you let them went over that river you were as good as dead... which was kinda the whole poiint of this movie, but I highly doubt it went all as simple as that.

    • @ukaszwesoowski6518
      @ukaszwesoowski6518 5 років тому +29

      After Battle of Kircholm the sweedish infantry realized that the pike of infantry were shorter than drzewka (more less the lances) od winged hussars. Its only a film and i understand that it would be very difficult to make it real in the film at the begining of '70... In real battlefield both of formations vere veru "tight". The winged hussars were attacking in spread formation (to avoid musket volley) just to be very tight moments before the clash. Check the history;)

    • @czaknorris7823
      @czaknorris7823 5 років тому +14

      Probably, but this scene had no CGI. You don't want to ACTUALLY trample your extras while filming a scene. And one of the thing about hussars' effectiveness was specific manufacturing of the lance, which would be very long without breaking or sagging towards the earth. One of the primary reasons they remained effective as shock cavalry in a time where shock cavalry's days of glory seemed to be largely fading.

    • @MrYogosssss
      @MrYogosssss 5 років тому +22

      Normal cavalry it would work, but not with hussaria charging. Inf pike at a time was 3-4 meters long, hussar lance was 5-6 m. Longest original saved is 6.20m. Also this film really tried to be historical accurate but when comes to hussars they fail. I don't blame them. To use 3m spear from horse you need day or two. To use 5 meter lance you need significant training. There is no more hussars :( They couldn't find enough of riders to make this scene like it should be. You can tell by on simple detail - hussars bottom of lance put into small basket which was by letter rope attached to saddle. When hussar charged momentum was not from rider but from horse. In historic chronicles there is plenty of mentions that they stuffed 3 soldiers on lance, most recorded one was 6 people in one charge. Strength of lance with stiff attached to a horse is terrifying one. People underestimate this simple weapon. Thing is you need extensive training to be able to do that.

    Wasn't the battle won by the Swedish and Prussian troops?
    Total 80,000 Polish troops including 20,000 Krim Tartar, 1,200 Husars (the famous winged ones) and 13,000 noble ones - casualties about 3,000 troops and 39 cannons. They fought against 18,000 Swedish and Prussian troops (9,500 Swedish and 8,500 Prussian) who had a total of 700 casualties.
    After the battle, that lasted for 3 days, the city of Warsaw was ransacked by the Swedish-Prussian Alliance.
    It was actually the audacity of Karl Gustav of Sweden and the alertness to detail on the battle field and standing power of Friedrich Willhelm of Prussia that won the Battle on the 3rd day.
    Though when you see this movie segment it gives you the impression that the Swedish were killed like flies and troops fled in disarray and in panic, while actually the opposite took place.
    Nevertheless the movie has some great fighting scenes and a rich portrait of the different troops and their fighting cultures on both sides, nice to watch as such.

      to answer your question, no it wasn't won by swedish, prussian, traitor radziwil. hahahaha! How did you come up with all this nonsense???!!! are we talking about the same battle? this is not a cheap propaganda movie, it is a great movie based on great trilogy books based on historical events in 17th. century Polish-Commonwealth.
      If you get a chance, watch the movie potop/the deluge or at least 10 min. prior to the battle where swedish army is already marching and marching confused and demoralized hoping that cannons and radziwil will be the difference maker.

      I think you have a mistake here, this happened in porotski when the Polish-tatar troops defeated the Swedish-prussian troops and what came after that was the looting of Prussia which was nominaly a vassal of Poland but make guaranteed by Sweden.

    *Fun fact:* Hussar cavalry won all those battles just for modern Polish to destroy what those soldiers were fighting for, because of an absurd ideology of two men. A priest and a politic.

      Why watch then? But then, history might not be your strong point. You haven't heard, I suppose, that during this campaign, as an ally to Denmark-Norway, Stefan Czarnecki (Polish general), with his troops, went on to capture the Kolding castle (Denmark) on December 25th, 1658, when the Swedish forces were occupying it. Also, not to mention the battle of Nyborg on the Danish Island of Funen and the charge of Polish Hussaria, on November 14, 1659. Some interesting stuff, bro, worth checking out, for history lovers only.

      @@nobodycares9494 And then 60% of Polands population was killed, all of Polands treasure was carried off to Swedish museums and the Polish-Lithuanian commonwealth declined and ultimately was partitioned up and erased off the map. But you won some battles, wow.

      @@billywiththebulgingbaloonb5105 Correct, but you live in a moment, and you don't know what the future brings. Empires and kingdoms rise and fall. None of the ancient kingdoms is in existence today. Poland had internal problems, and its expiration was on the horizon. Mind you, the partitions were the result of a bunch of nobles (like today's elites) who sold Poland for profit, and yes, the wars Poland was involved in (not only with the Swedes but primarily with Ottomans, over one million of the native population was lost to Ottomans, so I don't know about 60% loss in population to Swedes, the number was also very big, too much ) were a huge blow. Today's elites do just the same in each country of the globe as we speak; they currently sell nations and for very little. With the Polish treasure stored safely in Sweden, from today's perspective, it can be called a bitter-sweet benefit because these would be lost during partitions and, if not, during WWII for sure. At least we can have access to Polish medieval literature in the Swedish museums. And yet, again, we don't know what the future will bring. The tables might need to be reversed, and perhaps Poland will need to keep other's treasures for safekeeping. Personally, I wouldn't want that to happen, but I am not very optimistic about what I see in the neighboring countries, to the North, West, East, and South. Regards!

      @@billywiththebulgingbaloonb5105That's not propaganda, the battle of Prostki was won by the Polish side. Sure, the Deluge was devastating, but actually, less than 60% of the population was killed, and certainly not all Polish treasures were carried off to Sweden, cause Muscovy was at war with the Commonwealth at that time too. Next, the decline of the Commonwealth did not happen that quickly cause not long after that devastating war, Poland achieved huge victories in wars with the Ottomans.
