It is not good to remove something you have got naturally. Some braces require removing 4 teeth.

@@17timesSmoother That is insanity. The term "had to" is often repeated by patients and then carried forward as a family tradition.
It's another topic entirely but, the "had to" part fits. I had a friend who when we were in the 8th grade (about 14 years old) "had to" have a circumcision and was going to have it done over the summer. Since I was circumcised right after birth, I had no experience with elective male-adult circumcision. So, I asked him, "why do you 'have to' have it done, what exactly is wrong?" He wasn't sure why he "had to" have it done.
A few days later, he told me that both his uncle (on his mother's side) and his cousin (on his father's side) "had to" have it done when they were in their mid-20s and that his parents were concerned that he too might end up needing a circumcision at an even older age. The doctor told the parents that it was much easier and would heal faster if done at age 14 rather than at age 25 or so (given the family history of "having to" have it done). My friend seemed happy with the explanation. He wasn't happy about having 2/3rds of the skin on his penis amputated but, given the alternative of a more difficult procedure later in life, this seemed like the better option.
I asked him if he could find out why his uncle and cousin "had to" have the procedure done. I told him that it might be true that they decided on their own to have it done and there was no "had to" involved.
He called each of them to find out why they had "had to" have it done in their mid-20s.
His uncle told him that he'd grown up during the age (the 1950s) when just about every child "had to" have their tonsils removed. His uncle wasn't in his 20s. He was 13 years old and going in for a tonsillectomy. He spend the night before in the hospital. A good education had been given him about his tonsillectomy when he'd visited the doctor before surgery. He knew exactly what to expect. He got up at o'Dark Thirty and showered and put on a lovely hospital gown that didn't cover his butt. (my personal opinion is this is to keep most in bed). He returned to bed and waited. A nurse came in with an injection to "relax" him (read that as drug him so he won't cause any problems). The same nurse put a piece of masking tape on his gown above his heart that said, "circumcision." The uncle had no idea what that meant. So, he asked the nurse. Her answer was, "oh, that's just something to make you feel better." When the uncle woke from his surgery, his throat felt like someone had taken a blowtorch to it. But, his penis also felt funny (the nerve block hadn't worn off yet). He went into the bathroom and saw that they cut off his foreskin. The uncle said there wasn't anything wrong with his foreskin other than his mother wanted it gone. It was healthy and moved back and forth with no problem. My friend figured that was just the way it was in the 1950s and chalked his uncle's experience up as non-related to his own.
When he rang up his cousin the story he got was also not the "had to" story his parents had told him. His cousin had on his own chosen voluntary male medical circumcision (VMMC). He found a doctor and had it done because he wanted it done. There was no "had to" in the reason.
Oddly, it turns out the reason my friend's cousin had chosen VMMC was that he was getting married. His fiancée had told him she would not marry an uncircumcised man. So, he set up the appointment, had the amputation, and got ready for the wedding. Two years later he divorced his wife and has regretted his VMMC every day since.
My friend told his parents the reason behind the "had to" of both his uncle's and cousin's procedures. His parents said that wasn't their understanding and that they were still concerned that later in life he might "have to" have it done and that it would be better to just do it now.
My friend gave it some thought and went back to his parents and said he wanted to wait until he was 18 and could fully make the decision as an adult. His parents agreed. I still keep in touch with him and from time to time ask him about how that part of him is doing.
He's never had a problem. He has children and none of them are circumcised. He follows the basic rule of "only clean what you can see" when they are in diapers and as a couple of his kids have hit puberty, he has made sure everything is working as designed and that his boys know how to keep clean. (My friend puts it this way, 'I taught them to wipe their butts, this is 10-times easier than that.")
So, my question (after all of that) is why - exactly - was there a need to have "had to" have four teeth extracted? Could another dentist have accomplished the same thing with no extractions?

If you know for sure that teens are terrible at brushing from the start and that brushing is EXTRA IMPORTANT after braces, why do you put braces on teens? Patient blaming is one of the biggest problems in medicine. Patients don't set out to hurt themselves. The system installed by a doctor, a surgical procedure, or a method of delivering medication will have a giant flaw. Yes, doctors explain the flaw to the patient. Yet, this explanation is often delivered at a time when a patient is very sick, scared, or just pissed off that they have to have the treatment. When the system or procedure fails, it is not the patient's fault. It is the fault of the total system which includes the doctor that decided to do the treatment, the manufacturer of the product, the team of healthcare workers who educate the patient, and sometimes an industry that profits greatly from continuing to use a certain one time use device or perhaps just from the profit of doing the procedure at all.
The bottom line, stop blaming the patient. If braces almost never leave stains on adult teeth because they brush properly and frequently leave stains on teenager's teeth because they are poor brushers, aren't the stains the fault of the orthodontist who put the braces on? After all, the orthodontist knew that there was a very high likelihood that there would be stains unless they waited until the teenager was older.

      Hi Randall,
I am with you on this. I am an older adult and 15 days in with my metal braces. I am married so the appearance of them does not matter to me. I was also told by my orthodontist Invisalign would take longer to achieve the results I would want. Anyway, good luck with your treatment! I hope it all goes well for you.

      @@KyleFisher270 Hi Kyle,
Thanks for the reply. My research prior to consultation with orthodontist indicated that Invisalign was not real good at fixing overbite and closing a gap where I lost a molar many years ago. I had pretty much made my decision to go with metal braces prior to the consultation. The big issue for me was, could the rear molars be pulled forward to close the gap and not have the front teeth move. Also, I'm fixing an overbite that has developed over the past several decades and some minor re-alignment. Approaching 4 weeks and doing well. Hopefully the same for you.

@@sajalkim3160 I wish nothing but the best for your friend. I still say that extracting teeth on a routine basis is not required. It makes the process easier for the dentist. But, for the patient, it's painful and four teeth they might need later in life are gone. And 80pct of people stop wearing their retainer by the time they are 25 years old. Without the retainer, the giant gaps where those teeth used to be will return.
