My great grandfather was the orchestra conductor, Maestro José Sabré Marroquin.
Wow! Te contó algo sobre esa noche desde su experiencia?
WOW! Que padre
It was a.National competition and he was the popular favorite, he did not win BUT he became one of Mexicos most successful crooners. I saw him perform live here in Los Angeles a few time and it was worth every penny. To this day the name Jose Jose is equal to excellence and respect.
It was an International competition, not national. The impact of that interpretation was amazing, everyone wanted to buy the record, the next day, but it was”t exist. Jose José and the producers needed to work as quickly as possible, and the record was available few months later. Great song and great singer.
The people that were panned to in the audience were other professional singers… they were in awe of him
Many years later, José José expressed that the contest was about the best Latin song, regarding lyrics and composition. Unfortunately, the performance was not evaluated, which is why it came in third place. So it makes sense that he didn't win, although the lyrics of the song also deserved first place, both for lyrics and for Jose Jose's voice; The composer of the song was the great Roberto Cantoral who wrote it on a flight to his mother's funeral, which is why the lyrics are so sad, excuse the redundancy.
really? so , who win??
@@karonte16 I read that first place went to Claudia Oliveira from Brazil
In 1971 Frank Sinatra heard José José and invited him to record a duet album with him. Sadly José José couldn't as he had an exclusive contract with a different label. He is one of my favorite singers. Too bad you can't experience a live concert. He was from a musical family, his dad an operatic tenor, his mom a concert pianist.
In early 1970 he released the song "La nave del olvido" which became his first big hit in Mexico and Latin America, and recorded his second album: La Nave Del Olvido. José's big break came on March 15, 1970, when he represented Mexico in the international song festival the II Festival de la Canción Latina (Latin Song Festival II, predecessor of the OTI Festival) with a performance of the song "El Triste". He received standing ovations and cheers from Angélica María, Alberto Vázquez, Marco Antonio Muñiz, the judges and the audience in the Teatro Ferrocarrilero in Mexico City. José José finished in third place which shocked the audience. Thanks to "El Triste", his popular romantic ballad style mixed with a unique voice made him a major star in Mexico. His first international tour included Los Angeles, Miami, Puerto Rico, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Brazil and Argentina. He played leading roles in such minor films as Sueño de amor and La carrera del millón. José performed concerts at the Hollywood Palladium and the Hollywood Bowl.
In 1980 I saw him at the Shrine Auditorium...I took some pictures of him, and I still keep the ticket stub from that concert. It was great to see him! 💙
HOW DID HE END UP THIRD?
it does not make any sense.
who was above that performance?
At 5:00 and 5:10 that lady and the dude with the mouth open, were the most popular voices in Mexico back in those days, they were watching a legend being born, you just witnessed a piece of history of one of the best voices of Mexico.
What were their names? Nice fact😊
@@pixarfreak1993Their names are Angelica Maria and Marco Antonio Muniz!
No sabía eso, que cabron
@@tarobobaenjoyer And don't forget Alberto Vazquez a few seconds later clapping like crazy with his cigarrette in his mouth.
Of course he was royalty. He was our Prince of Song. ❤
*is* :D
El Príncipe de la canción! Yes he is!
He was only 22 years old when he entered this singing
Competition.👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I am sorry I could be wrong, but I think he was 17 years old.
Something you should know is that Juan Gabriel was his great friend, when José José (El príncipe de la canción )Juan Gabriel felt so much affection and admiration for him that he wrote more than 12 songs to produce his last album before losing his voice due to a serious lung disease caused by excess alcohol and drugs. A unique friendship between them !Gran príncipe de la canción siempre eterno al lado del inigualable Divo de Juárez
One of the leading lines is, "Today I want to savor my pain", and one of the most majestic voices in the world will make for one of the most recognized songs in history. He did not win this Latin American talent contest held in 1970, yet he killed it with this performance. Frank Sinatra himself described Jose Jose as the greatest singers he has ever heard. I am glad you're giving this as well as other talented folks in Mexico the exposure and admiration they deserve. Keep digging, there is so much gold for you to find in Mexican music.
That was a scandal. His performance was so good that everybody loved him. And no one can believe he didn't get the first prize. That was the time when he became famous. He was almost unknown until that day. You can see in the public three of the best mexican singers: Angelica Maria, Marco Antonio Muñiz and Alberto Vásquez. And they were astonished and delighted by José José performance. Completely overwhelmed! I was, then, an eleven years old girl, but from that moment, he was my favorite singer. I remember that day so clearly!
El triste
How sad it was to say goodbye,
When we adored each other so much,
Even the swallow migrated
Foreshadowing the end.
How sad everything is without you,
The beach has no sea,
The colors turn gray,
Everything is loneliness now.
I don't know If I'll see you once again,
I don't know what will become of my life
without the light of your being,
that doesn't shed light on me anymore.
Today I want to savor my pain,
I don't ask for compassion nor pity
This love story was written
to be eternal
"What a sad one", everyone says of me,
That I'm always speaking of you
But they don't know that by thinking of your love, of your love,
I am able to help myself go on, to help myself live.
Today I want to savor my pain,
I don't ask for compassion nor pity
This love story was written
to be eternal
"What a sad one", everyone says of me,
That I'm always speaking of you
But they don't know that by thinking of your love, of your love,
I am able to help myself go on, to help myself live.
This was the first time the song was sang and although he already was somewhat popular, this song sent him to the stars.
He has been one of the musical symbols in mexican and latin american culture.
Sadly he passed away in 2019, but his legacy will remain forever.
It is a very sad song, and at his only 22 years old in this performance is really amazing to give all this emotions in his interpretation.
I grew up listenig to him and many others.
So cool you are open to appreciate another cultures. RESPECT! 😊
Can you believe it? That was a festival, a contest... and he won third prize!
Considered in Mexico and all of Latin America the best vocalist of all time, his unmatched voice a phenomenal voice, Mexico
José José was called "The prince". His father was an opera singer: a tenor. And his mother was a pianist. In this video he was just 22 years old. His voice was incredible, as good as his thecnic.
Amigo mío, con esta actuación de José José, Frank Sinatra quedó maravillado y pidió cantar con él, ya que nunca había visto cantar a alguien así, un saludo desde Mérida, México
Allot of the people in the audience are movie stars singers soap actors and the Man at the end who congratulated him with the red blazer is Andres Garcia Mexican Actor...
The poetry!!!!!!!! I that time Jose Jose was so young
This song doesn't only represents everyones heartbreaking story at one point of their life, it means the union of different generations, I remember once there was a family party with everyone separated by ages, the elderly with 60 years of age, the group of parents with 40 years of age, the young lads with 20's and they were all drinking and having their own separate conversations, but once this song.... this particular song started, all of the people, women, man, started singing this song with all their hearts and unified 4 generations in a single song... that's how important this song is.
I got the privilege of meeting him after this competition and he was the most humble man alive
Saludos de México. If you take into account also that he was only 22 years old then, that should make your jaw drop even more, right? I think I can speak for all Mexicans.... José José is one of the best singers our country has given us (no matter what genre of music you like). Arriba México! El Triste means: The sad one. I am pasting the lyrics both in Spanish and the maching translation for it (It might not sound as romantic in English, but you will get the idea): Qué triste fue decirnos adiós
Cuando nos adorábamos más
Hasta la golondrina emigró
Presagiando el final
Qué triste luce todo sin ti
Los mares de las playas se van
Se tiñen los colores de gris
Hoy todo es soledad
No sé si vuelva a verte después
He podido ayudarme a vivir
He podido ayudarme a vivir
Oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh
Hoy quiero saborear mi dolor
No pido compasión ni piedad
La historia de este amor se escribió
Para la eternidad
Qué triste todos dicen que soy
Que siempre estoy hablando de ti
No saben que pensando en tu amor, en tu amor

Hello from Mexico !! As-salamu alaykum !!
Maybe this translation helps you to understand. This song was written on a plane shortly after the composer Roberto Cantoral knowing his mother's death.

Por fin, podemos escuchar y disfrutar del príncipe de la canción José José 🎉🎉
Pero otra vez el triste 1970
🙄 teniendo mas música
One of my favorite singers
He was know as the Prince of the song in Mexico and internationally as well.
Since time ago there was a "Festival Internacional de la Canción Latina OTI", different countries of hispanic lenguages were invited to appaer with one song, José José was the México' s representante of this year
Royalty indeed... He is known as the Prince of songs. Mexico has given birth to some of the greatest singers, and José José is second to none. Greetings and respect from Colombia!
It was a competition! And from the beginning he won the ppl right away, the judges gave him the third place but since then his career took off, he was a magnificent singer, my mum’s favorite so I grew up knowing all of his songs. My mum went to a few of his concerts
It's so interesting you immediately saw him as royalty since Jose Jose was known as El Principe de la Cancion (The Prince of Song).
Great reaction...!! Frank Sinatra known to José José...there is a history. I suggest you listen the songs that were hit like Amor Amor (live at Las Vegas), Tu primera vez, Mientras llueve, Déjame conocerte, Volcán apagado, Amar y querer, Vamos a darnos tiempo, La nave del olvido, Lo pasado pasado, Si me dejas ahora, Del altar a la tumba. Javier Solis was another singer who was very known and admired by Sinatra, I suggest you too listen the songs Sombras, Gracias, Regálame esta noche, Esclavo y amo, Luz de luna, Entrega total....he was amazing!! Zoé and their unploged...is unmissable!! Finally, Cristian Castro with the songs Lloran las rosas, Yo quería and Volver a amar live at Festival Viña del mar 2004. Greetings from Mx!!
The music still playing after he stops singing makes it look like the final scene of a movie. Like the main character
Composicion del maestro, roberto cantoral, interpretada por otro maestro del canto, como lo fue el gran principe de la cancion, don jose jose!! 🫶
José José, the Prince of Song, lost his voice at 60 years old. He had addiction problems, mostly with alcohol. However, he didn't lost his voice because of this. He had pneumonia when he was under 20. His lungs were damaged. Then, in 2007, he was diagnosed with Bell paralysis and in 2008 with Lyme disease. These illnesses damaged many of his organs, his throat/vocal chords among others. He passed away in 2019. Undoubtedly, one of the best mexican singers of all times.
José José " el.principe de la canción" un ícono de la música en México!
Great Jose Jose. The three people on Camara, who later give a huge him, they are Mexican singers too. The lady is Angelica Maria, Alberto Vasquez y Marco Antonio Muñiz.
José José another mexican legend!!!♥️🇲🇽 I absolutely love his songs and his voice is mesmerizing and unique.
You have to keep listening to El Principe de la canción please 🙏 😊
Siiiii Siiiii Si kkkkkkkk🤣🤩
This performance is indeed a piece of History. This is actually a competition where Jose Jose was the ultimate favorite of the audience and the whole country, and you can see ( and listen) why.
The song ( El triste, the sad guy) well, what can I say about the song. It is a classic now.
Such powerful lyrics.
“ only thinking of your love I could help myself to live…
I could help myself to live!”
That’s how the song ends.
Now, on a side note, since you mentioned he resembles royalty,
In Mexico we have this thing for giving great artists their own nicknames. For example,
JuanGabriel- “El divo de Juarez “
Raphael- “ El Ruiseñor de Linares”
José José …
“ El príncipe de la canción “ ( The Prince of the Song)
So, you nailed it!
Walaikom assalam Jose Jose is my favorite latin singer he was just fantastic singer, I am a latina muslim woman so spanish is my mother tongue this song is about a man who looses the love of his life the feelings in this interpretation is just beautiful I love every one of his songs.
Actually, Frank Sinatra wanted to record a duet with him! They met each other.
Oh. José José is the best! I love him! You will, too.
One of the best Mexican crooners.
react "Como quien pierde una estrella" by Alejandro Fernández
"Hoy quiero saborear mi dolor" = I want to savor my pain, my favorite lyric. He is coined "El Principe de la Cancion" the Prince of the Song, like you mentioned he looks like Royalty. He is the best Canta autor of our generation in Mexico. Check out "Gavilan o Paloma" and "Lo que no fue no sera"
I was waiting for this reaction!!!! Thanks dear arab man.
El trusts that is the sonG he sang at Mexico's national music festival called OTI if I remember correct he came second place that festival was done to promote new talent singers and writers.
It’s funny you said “he almost looks like a royal” because in Mexico he was known as “El Príncipe de la Canción” the Prince of Song 🎵 👑
he was nicknamed "The song Prince" he was a huge mexican star. he had a great voice and has many iconic songs. they put out an album of his most iconic songs played and recorded by pop, rock and Mexican folk aritsts who intepreted their songs in their own style, released in lates 90`s and it became a huge success. his songs trascend generations
He was just 17 years old when he sang el Triste.
El es Jose Jose el Principe de la canción
Tesoro Reliquia Mexicana!!
You're going to love 'Lo Dudo' by José José.
El Triste (The Sad One)
Written by Roberto Cantoral Garcia, song by José José (circa 1970)
Literal translation by Malcolm G. Boswell
How sad that we had to say goodbye
When we still adored each other so
Even the sparrow migrated
Predicting the end
How sad everything seems without you
Le oceans from the beaches are gone
All colors are now tinged in grey
Everything is solitude
I don’t know if I will see you again
I don’t know what my life will be
Without the blue brightness of your being
That no longer shines on me
Today I want to taste my pain
I don’t ask for compassion or pity
The story of this love was written
For all of eternity
How sad, everyone says that I am
That I’m always talking about you
They don’t know that talking about you
About you
I am able to help me survive
I am able to help me survive
Ah-ah, ah-ah
Ah-ah, ah-ah
Today I want to taste my pain
I don’t ask for compassion or pity
The story of this love was written
For all of eternity
How sad, everyone says that I am
That I’m always talking about you
They don’t know that talking about you
About you
I am able to help me survive
I am able to help me survive
I am able to help me survive
I am able to help me survive
The difference between a literal translation and an artistic translation is that the literal translation translates the words as written (with some cultural necessary adjustments) while an artistic translation focuses on the intent of the song, re-writing the imagery to fit the culture of the target language while creating the same emotional impact and sense of the original song.
Artistic translation of the first verse, if I were to try and capture the sentiment would be something like:
How sad that things ended this way
while love was still burning inside
A sparrow that has flown away
anticipating the upcoming night!
Enjoy, sorry I did not catch this when you first posted it!
I always enjoy how you add so much technical understanding to what you admire of each song.
The song was a debut in the contest, and he wond second or third place!! He was heavy favorite. The whole orchestra was not planned, it was a first of a kind. It was at his start of his career
Thats right! He was a Crooner, after this performance, years later, the very same Sinatra went to a local bar in TIJUANA,BC,México to hear singing Jose Jose, and he did, so he was surprised by the maner he do It!
My faborite Arab guy!☝️😁
Thanks brother, from México 🇲🇽!
Amazing voice! ♥♥♥♥♥
that was the song he won the singing contest with. However, as he aged, he lost his voice it was very bittersweet to hear him try to reach those notes
He didn’t win but he should’ve won. He was the best.
He had just 1 hit song by the time he went to that competition. He was not well known at the time. He didn't win the competition, but no one remembers the winner. To everyone he should have been the winner. He became a sensation overweight after that live performance. That video is a legend of the moment a star was born. Because of the clothing he was wearing that night, he is known as The Prince of Song. He resembles "The Little Prince" Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. You might have heard of that book.
What do you need to be explained if you yourself explained the quality of singer that this man is?!!
That is what the crowd is recognizing him with all due merit.
He was one of the best Mexican and Latin American singers in musical history.
Thanks and greetings from México!! 🇲🇽

1:50 You got it, man! He's known in Latin America as "El Príncipe de la Canción" (The Prince of Song)
Mexico has produce incredible singer, producer and cinematographer . It has represented Latin America world wide. As well as famous singers and actors from other Latin America's countries and Spain. Our Language has many words that have Arab roots. Thank you for sharing. Love to see some Arabs singer in your UA-cam channel.🎉🎉🎉
You should react to Raphael, such a beatiful, strong and stunning voice (and he is still alive :D ) a pride for Spain indeed :) love ur reactions! keep going!!!
Es la primera vez que te veo y como todo mexicano me da orgullo que un extranjero reaccione a nuestra music
I grew up listening to Jose Jose. Amazing artist. Unfortunately his kids are still fighting the inheritance.
Thank you for Showing This Brother 🇲🇽💪🏽
You are in the presence of the birth of Mexican music icon. He made so many other hits for dacades until he lost his precious voice because of alcohol and drug abuse.
OMG , you reacted to this? Its gonna be a wild ride!
It must have felt like magic in that moment.
You can feel it through the screen.
The only other crowd reaction that gave me similar feelings was the fight for Ward vs Gatti 1
There was no loser that night.
There is no antidepressant powerful enough, no therapy treatment, that can heal the broken soul of growing up listening to this.
Dude, I can tell you actually understand their technic and how good they are. Do me a favor and do us all a favor. Change the lyrics to English so you get a better idea of what you're actually reacting to. UA-cam gives you that option in most cases. Your reactions seem some how incomplete because you do NOT know what they are singing about. It makes no sense. I have seen other reactions from Germany or France, and they all have the lyrics in English so they can understad them. Please, do the same thing. It will help you make a more through review an it will be all worth it. Take advantage of technology. Cheers.
¡Gracias!
Thank youuuuu!
The author of this song wrote it after his mother passed away. The lyrics are a painful reminder and adoration of the author's mother. El Triste means "the sad one."

I met him in a hotel lobby when I was a little girl. My sister loved him but was too shy to approach him. I was maybe like 6 years old so I had absolutely no problem just running up to him interrupting, LOL... And saying hello
Very good reaction to the king Jose Jose, fantastic singer

he's Nick name was el principe de la cancion.(the prince of the song) he's voice was very particular, and powerfull. one of my favorites singer's. and he sing New york song hispanish version, and a frank sinatra like it a lot. cristian castro, another great singer say, mr. jose jose has 4 lung's, because is not easy sing he's song's on he's style. whit those really long notes. saludos amigo!!
He was 21-22 years old on that competition. The song is called “The sad one” It was so sad saying goodbye, when we adore each other so much, even the swallow emigrated, foreshadowing the end…
Everything turns grey etc etc Everybody says that i am the sad one , that i am always talking about you, they don’t know that thinking about you helps me to keep me alive…
There are no words in front of great talents.. The prince of the song was unique in his way of singing, Frank Sinatra was amazed with him since both had the same style in the phrases, neither of them had a separation in their verses, they united the words without pausing, admirable. But El Divo de Juarez will always be eternal, there is no reaction that you see where they affirm the same thing, the way in which they absorb you in their songs and their presentations, takes you to the stage together with him, it is difficult to explain with words, it reaches the depths of your being and you feel each letter, each stanza and you just want to keep listening to it over and over again, I can describe it as a trip to the clouds, its joy, its charisma to catch you in that moment of its interpretation. For those who don't know much of his songs and for you, Beautiful Beautiful Arab Man, you should look for a presentation at the theater of fine arts, I MUST DO IT ALL FOR LOVE, The Theater went crazy with that closing song of his concert, beautiful beautiful Divo de Juarez Eternal Always human👏
