Just to point out a drumming note: The dude is playing straight semiquavers at this high tempo using double strokes on the feet which is very impressive, takes incredible technique & control. The whole band are fantastic musicians though.

As a drummer myself, the drummer's heel toe technique is definitely _"third eye purple."_ Absolutely incredible!

@@donkeyhodie8500 I know I am about a year out on comments but as I watch this video I notice the drummer does not do heal toe, at least with his left foot. He does a toe flutter (that is what I think of it as. I am not a musician) which looks so cool to me.
When I first heard this song I was amazed,the musicianship of each band member is right up there with the best. She is just a beast singer. Canada has entered another great band into music.

First time hearing of this band. They are killer!
Their last two albums Apex(2017) and Abyss(2020) are concept albums that tell a 20 chapter story, 10 per album. This song Awakening is chapter 1.
Just something to keep in mind if you're gonna check them out. It will help you understand the lyrics haha you don't have to listen to it in order as both albums are killer musically, but I highly suggest it if you interested in the story 🤘

The Abyss album is breathtaking. The song Abyss has a delicious amount of synth accenting. Two of the best songs on the album don't even have video's, Wind That Shapes the Land and Afterlife.

wonderful album. do yourself a favor, you dont have to react to it all, but keep your headphones on and hear out the whole album, it tells the story of the Immortal who exists in stasis between realms until he's called upon. one day he is woken up (the Awakening, what you heard) and is guided to the Matriarch who wants to claim immortality herself, but to do so she needs to sacrifice her own sons who have a portion of the life force needed to extend her life. the immortal returns the 1st son, a dirty politician, and the sacrifice takes place, but when engaging the next son he is confronted by a 10,000 man army sent to stop him. at first the immortal engages with the army, but realizes (or believes) that they are simply under the control of this 2ns son. He convinces some of the army to turn on their master, but when he confronts the son, he's shocked at the kindness and generosity of the son, who has a family. this army wasnt under a spell, the son had won them over with kindness. knowing that he (the immortal) cannot risk betraying the matriarch, he convinces the son to return for his execution, to which the son agrees, showing just how selfless he actually was. the immortal isnt supposed to judge or care, but he cant help but be moved by this gesture and starts to question why he is even going along with this plan, but is still concerned that the Matriarch will fulfill her threat of bounding him to her will forever instead of releasing him as promised, a fate worse than death. but, of course, the Matriarch betrays him anyway and binds him, and returns him to his cave to await her next command. in Apex (the last song) he returns to his dormant state, but......she never calls on him
their new album is a continuation, where the Immortal is released onto the world in the current era without a master for the 1st time in eons....

You know what a REAL musician is? Someone who is just touched in the heart, regardless of what "genre" it is. Seeing you react to the craftsmanship of the band is beautiful.
I don't know f-all about composing music, but i feel the music and the joy when i watch this...
I honestly feel this is easily one of the greatest power metal songs ever written and performed. It has everything and then some when it comes to vocals, lyrics, skills on every instrument being played.
The drummer must have leg muscles of pure titanium to keep that pace for the whole dang song!
I went to highschool with Andrew (the red head guitarist) the boys been a SHREDDER since the 10th fucking grade, his high school band Golgotha rocked every all ages venue in Courtenay
Every time I hear this song I come away thinking the drummer must be in awesome cardio shape.
I remember hearing this for the first time. thinking this had to be one of their big songs. no this is their opening song of the set when this was their newest album, this was their WARM UP.
I am surprised that these folks got their time machine from 1986 to work well enough to hang out in 2021. Glad they came by.

another singer everyone passes over that is a multi talented powerhouse - Anna Murphy of Cellar Darling....you've never heard a hurdy gurdy like the way she plays. "Hedonia" or "Dance" or anything actually. I've been a bass player for 30 years and Anna Murphy has just impressed the hell out of me.
You definitely need to do "Tonight We Ride," "Test Your Metal," "Soulbound," and "Faster Than Light.". UTA are amazing.
The drummer is an absolute beast.
That synth intro is what I call Impending Doom.

I've been listening to Unleash the Archers for a few years now, and I'll put it this way: Brittney Slayes, the singer, is so good as a vocalist that Arjen Lucassen, a prog-rock composer, used her on the latest Star-One album, in the track Fate of Man. Fate of Man not only is a song that is about the Terminator movie from 1984, but more importantly, is a song that Arjen wanted Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden to originally sing.
And speaking of Bruce Dickinson, if you haven't heard it yet, I highly recommend watching the live 1982 performance of Iron Maiden performing Hallowed Be Thy Name. It is one of the legendary performances of any band out there.
Metal has sort of become the new jazz in terms of the talent pool of young up-and-comers. It's been really cool to see the genre grow, over the years.

I wouldn't say that's a new thing. Look back at guys like Alex Skolnick (Testament, Trans-Siberian Orchestra), Gar Samuelsson (Megadeth), metal and jazz have crossover of amazing instrumentalists just trying to find new challenges
She said in an interview on YT that she is from the beginning really an Alto. She sang Alto in a very good choir for many years....
But I guess she got a really tonally height also ..... :)

The bassist is using a claw hammer banjo style!
Herman Li from Dragonforce (Through the Fire and the Flames) wrote the song for the band. The band put their own "spin" to what Herman wrote and this was the result.

I'd highly recommend Tonight We Ride, Legacy, General of the Dark Army, Abyss, and Cleanse the Bloodlines by the same band. They're so talented at using the entire range of their abilities in basically every song.

Geebz, cuz you try not to watch the video, I'm not sure if you noticed or not, but there's TWO dudes playing lead guitar during that long instrumental section and that 20 second section right before that cool ass bass fill, both of them are playing together. I also believe during the verses and chorus they are synchronzied as well. I've seen this video at least 100 times and it always amazes me the amount of practice and amazing timing it would take to do that.
Almost like Iron Maiden and Journey had a futuristic metal prodigy offspring. Equal part headband and sing a long. Fantastic

I think you were right in the ballpark when you mentioned that they have elements of older metal. Brittney has stated that Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden is one of her biggest influences. Lyrically, she was a History major and is obsessed with dark fantasy literature so that greatly influences her musical storytelling.
If you ever wanted to interview her, she seems to respond to most requests because she's a giant music nerd and loves to talk about it.
This song brings me to tears every time I hear it. I'm so glad you decided to check them out! They're from my city and they're all really rad people, not to mention utterly insane. Then they play live they usually close out with their song "Tonight We Ride" which is insanely hard on vocals and she absolutely SLAYS it. I swear she has perfect pitch. One of their guitar players works as a cook at an amazing restaurant.
Technical abilities by everyone in this band is killer.
I've read that Brittney does her own harmonies with her magical "Box of Brittneys".... o.O

I very much like "City of Iron" by Unleash the Archers. In the chorus - "In the rays of the starlight, I will rise", there's this lovely inverted chord, the vocals are double tracked and there's this interval going on. I'd like for someone to explain what it's doing.
Watching you talk about these bands and summarize some of the sounds really makes me appreciate these bands more 🙏
Been listening to this for a couple years now, still get goosebumps every time! As another has said, I don't believe the guitars are layered, but Brittney certainly lays down some harmonies to her own voice! Great breakdown, thanks!

Their discography is amazing - it's hard to highlight only a few songs, but the "typical" ones people react to other than this one (from their previous album, "Apex"), are (and this is by no means a comprehensive list) "Tonight we Ride" and "Test Your Metal" from 2 albums ago ("Time Stands Still"), and then off of their most recent album ("Abyss"), the common ones are those with actual videos, like the title track, "Abyss", "Soulbound", and "Faster Than Light".
However, I personally think "The Wind that Shapes the Land" is perhaps one of their best tracks - just doesn't have a "fancy video" ;) I don't think I've even seen anyone react to the song, and I'd love to see some reactions! (I also really enjoy "Carry the Flame")
I mean... great band, overall. I can (and often do) just listen to them all day long.
I'm pretty sure that Brittney layers her vocals, herself, for the mastered tracks... some more clearly have one of the guitarists doing backing vocals and/or growls.
Anyway - after doing some reactions, I HIGHLY recommend doing a full playthrough-listen to both "Apex" and then "Abyss"... they are both concept albums that tell a story.... you can find a few videos from Brittney explaining the story, btw :)

I'm still depressed that I had tickets to see UTA and Dragonforce in Brooklyn when Covid hit. This band and Avatar are the 2 bands on my bucket list to see live.
I actually discovered Avatar when I went to see Babymetal in 2019 in NYC. Avatar was the opening band. I had never heard of that band before then.
I just found "Cannons" Fire For You. I like a half dozen of their songs. Purple Sun, Hurricane are a few others off the top of my head. Unleash the Archers totally hooked me the first half of the song.
This band is so great (and so fun)! “Tonight We Ride” really shows off Brittney’s vocals. Also, still really hoping for a Leprous reaction. 😊

May I suggest for your next Unleash The Archers reaction to do "The Wind That Shapes the Land" from their latest album Abyss. It is an amazing, epic, and complex song that no one else has really reacted to yet. No music video for it but you focus on the music anyways.

Hey Geebz! I'm totally on the UTA train with you. I stumbled across them a few weeks ago when I found them covering an acapella folk song by Stan Rodgers called "North West Passage" and was blown away by their version. I binged a bunch more of their stuff right away, then went home and played it all again for my daughter. Love to see you having the same reaction to their music that I did just such a short time ago.

Saw these guys play in a tiny club in Manchester a few years ago, bass player seems to play with a banjo type technique using his thumb and first 3 fingers to keep up the semiquavers.
You mentioned the engineering, you may like to know that all the mixing and mastering was done by Jacob Hansen of Hansen Studios in the Netherlands. (He has quite an impressive portfolio of metal artists he's worked with BTW). This was their first album working with him and the sound quality of the final mix is stellar. The whole album is sonically captivating.

Goosebumps seems to me to be the more common idiom in the US, but still evocative of the same phenomenon.

This song is on the Album Apex. It is a masterpiece of an album! Apex would be another great song to analyze.
