Something's Happening Here EXPO 86 Theme Song

- In 1986 Vancouver welcomed the world to Expo 86 for our World Fair. To go with a world class event like Expo 86 we needed an incredible theme song that would be played every night for our spectacular fireworks display and as Expo 86's anthem.
Michael Koren of Koko Productions provided an amazing theme song for Expo 86... Sung by Lisa Dal Bello , "Something's Happening Here" is STILL timeless and brings back so many incredible memories of 1986...
Sadly the fireworks that appear in this video are not those that actually went with the song at the fair... (why I didn't record the show at the time I'll never know) but thanks to the nice folks at footagefirm.com who supplied the fireworks for the video you still have something to look at while you enjoy this great song!

Hearing this song after all these years brings back a lot of memories. I was 19 during EXPO 86 and worked at the Iron Horse Grill restaurant (next to the Roundhouse). What a blast it was to be young then. After work we used to go out drinking and dancing at a club called Systems (bottom of Richards St). Then, we'd head out to Jericho Beach or English Bay and watch the sunrise. No Internet, no cellphones, and we enjoyed ourselves just fine without what young people today can't do without.
I worked at Expo too. That was one of the greatest experiences for me. Every morning this would play just before they let the people in. Thanks for posting!!!!
Here we are, May 2nd, 2016... exactly 30 years after this song was first played at the fireworks and at exactly the same time it was played the first time... where did the time go? It still seems like yesterday!
Thanks to all of you who have taken the time to share your Expo 86 memories with us and of course to Michael Koren for creating this great song and for allowing me to share it with you in my video... in honor of the 30 year anniversary I am cranking this up loud and remembering that first amazing night! :)

The song had the same effect on me which is why I had to try to re-create the fireworks show that went with it... funny almost 1/4 century later the song still gives me chills just like the first time I heard it! Glad you enjoyed it as much as I did... thanks for the comment! :)
I was conceived at and collect souvenirs from Expo 86, thanks for posting this artifact from one of the world's favourite Expos... Great piece of 80's history, just like me !
You're not alone todandy... I didn't even work there, was 26 at the time and I *still* get goosebumps when I hear the song... even more with the fireworks I added to it... it is truly one of those timeless songs that take you back in time to when and where you heard it every time it is played... Glad you liked it as much as I do!

This is great. I run one of the Expo 86 websites and one of the most popular questions is "Do you know where I can hear the theme song?" It was popular then and it is still popular today. Thanks for allowing Expo enthusiasts to relive the memories.

My parents always talk about 86. Must have been fun if you were young. Kind of like the same experience I had at the Olympics I guess. :)

Awesome. This sure brings it back. I was 12 back during Expo. Went with my parents as much as we could. I still have my season's pass, and my expo "passport". Great to hear this after so long.
thanks so much for posting this ... Expo 86 was an amazing time for me ... I was 17 years old at the time and I had the best summer hanging out there!! That theme song still gives me goosebumps!!! Can't believe its been 23 years!!!!
I have to say, I am happy that I was old enough to remember Expo 86. 12, but I remember it all. I loved the ontario pavillion, the light snows and fireworks, the Spirit Lodge I believe it was called, the restaurant with the fish under the floor. etc.
Hi everyone... YES I sang this song many times at the EXPO fair in 1986 and other years including the OPENING and CLOSING ceremonies which you can see on UTUBE. I asked Michael and Wayne Kozak who wrote the song to to sell copies to the public but they refused.

I purchased a 1981 Trans Am Convertible (still have the car) and was entered into a raffle for a months pass to Expo. I only went once and near the end. I wish I had gone more that just one time. It was really interesting - no it was amazing!!.. :) The line up for the ladies washroom were incredible to see.. lol. There was also an Intranet setup and computers setup on the network. Highway 86 and all the vehicles covered in a cement like covering made for an interesting perspective.. all of it art.. I liked it

True enough... the song IS a rarity & in my opinion one of the best ever sung by Dal Bello OR written by Michael Koren...
It is an amazing piece of music and performance that still captivates me 23 years after the first time I heard it... Many thanks to Michael for sharing this song with me so I could in turn share it with all of you... Nice to know there are others like me who will never forget this song or the magic it lent to Expo 86! :)

@ShawnDoeX I got such a clear rendition from Michael Koren who wrote and produced the song for Expo 86... in other words it is the best version of the song available today!

@titily Actually NO... Keep in mind that this information is directly from Michael Koren himself who wrote and produced the song for Expo 86... Dal Bello was the original version you hear here that was played every night at Expo... yes, Nancy (who I worked with around that time) DID do a version but it was after Dal Bello's and was never used at the Expo fireworks or other events... regardless, glad you enjoyed the song! :)
Expo 86 - what a party, what a celebration of life! I was a kid at the time and learned so much about the world because of it. It seemed like there was really something for everyone - pavillions, theme days, concerts, art installations, rides and more. Oh - and really uncomfortable benches - lol!
@Pika817 You'd have to contact Michael Koren at Koko Productions in Vancouver and ask... as for putting it on iTunes, I think it's a super idea... it's a great song and deserves to be available for everyone to enjoy, especially since it's 25 years old next year! :)

One thing however... please correct the writer's credit on your webpage to read "Michael Koren"... the first name you have written there is incorrect and while Michael deserves full 'marks' for this great song his name should be right... wouldn't you agree? ;)

I thought Nancy Nash sung the theme song on the version we usually heard at Expo, but it says Lisa Dal Bello here?
+alan m Both singers did do the song but the version here was sung by Lisa. I am 100% certain of this as the information came from Michael Koren (who wrote and produced both versions of the song) himself...
You can contact Michael through Koko productions, his production house in Vancouver... I hope that helps!

I was wondering if there's anyway that I could buy a copy of this song from Michael? My cousin and I have been looking everywhere for this since ten years ago. Or maybe he should publish this on iTunes!
It was an awesome experience. I was sad when it all ended. I thought they could keep it as a permanent showpiece for Vancouver and turn it into a theme park with updated content. Perhaps it's time for something like that now. Does anyone remember the final firework for the July 1 fireworks? It was the largest and loudest I have ever experienced, even to this day. Thanks for posting the song and fireworks Trevor.
