I used a jig saw with metal cutting blade... Screw holes to start and use a drill with wire wheel to clean up burrs. Painted with an all in one paint/primer. Use the heavy duty pipe clamp to attach exhaust to unit. Added a fuel filter and a muffler. Had to drill holes in top of my fuel pump and used plastic tank standpipe. It's a learning curve when you diy.. thanks for your video👍 I also used the Webasto plate for all heaters and the foam gasket they sell to go with it cause my Chevy van floor is very uneven.
@@AnkeneyVanBuilds Today I'm tackling the electrical. Then startup. Did you have to calibrate yours for fuel rate? My run is super short with little change in height from fuel source to unit.. I downloaded instructions... So I'll have to use the calculation table and probably just go step by step. It is definitely a process not to be rushed. ✌️
The likely reason you burned up your holesaw was your drill speed was too high. Cutting steel your saw blade speed should be about 80-100 surface feet per minute so with a 4" holesaw (4x3.14=12.56" per rotation) your drill rpm should be down around 75-90 rpm, you were probably pushing 500-1000 on a typical handheld drill so you smoked it. You could also use some annular cutter gel lube on it also.

Thanks for doing the video. After doing a 4” hole through the floor used a 2. 2/8 hole cutter to make two holes for the exhaust and intake and fuel hole. Didn’t have any problem with cuts.
Ah I see. Thanks for the input! That would probably work better. That 4” didn’t work at all. I’m thinking about for the next one I might drill 4 holes with a drill bit. Then connect the lines with a jig jaw. That should be a lot cleaner!
My heater has some bolts sticking out the bottom, so if I drill the 2 small holes and 4 separate ones for the bolts, I can securely attach it to the floor.

FYI for safety you should consider using a Webasto surface mounting kit. This is recommended when installing in a subfloor when gasses can permeate through the subfloor and into the van. If you're mounting directly to the chassis then you don't need it.
Damn man, I wish I had seen your video before installing mine (though I installed mine right before your video came out, haha)! I like your placement. I ended up struggling with placement with our bench seat and items under the van. In the end it works but takes up a lot more space we could utilize for storage than I would have liked. This was the first video of yours I watched but I'll definitely check out some more! Cheers!

When you cut through the wood did you remove the wood from the bit before you continued through the metal? The bit needs some vibration to cut efficiently and the speed is vital as was mentioned in a comment. Also with that big of a bit you need some lubricant as was also mentioned in a comment. But hey, lessons learned and you’re still relevant! Lovin’ your videos!
I really like your step/storage design and heater placement. I plan on duplicating it as I am also using a solar generator. I may go with 1/2" ply as the spans aren't to large. I'd love to get more details but I think I can wing it.

I was hoping to use a turret mount to install in the same location that you did but it is too wide... it would offer a lot more protection from heat and any exhaust link. So it looks like I am going to have to order the same mounting plate you used (mine did not come with one).
Now that you've had it installed for a bit, any issues underneath with exhaust hose getting too hot or making contact with air intake hose or the black hose on the van that connects to the white plastic thingy? Thanks!

Yes. That’s how they’re designed. I have a CO2 detector in the van as well as a fire extinguisher. But I don’t feel unsafe at all. It’s better than a Mr. Buddy or any propane heater in my opinion
I’m going to be building out a Promaster myself in the coming months. I saw another Webasto install, and when it was running it sounded rather loud in terms of trying to be stealth, trying to park on a city street and not have any sounds coming out of the van. This other install also had a little muffler on the end of their exhaust pipe, and it was still audible or so it seemed. When your heater is running can you hear it from the outside?
The heater is fairly audible, the fuel pump occasionally clicks and the exhaust is kind of noticeable outside if your close enough to the van. I believe all heater are like that tho. I wouldn’t let that discourage you from installing one tho!

But there’s another heater I need to check out, the brand is Propex. It looks very similar to the Webasto, can be mounted inside or outside the vehicle, and it has a thermostat, but it runs on propane. Hopefully it’s quiet.
Hi! So a few things actually. It doesn’t drain the battery too quickly. If you start at 100% you can run it for quite awhile. The issue I run into though, is once the battery is at 50% or less. It isn’t capable of out putting the required 12v and I get an error on the webasto saying basically not power to run it. So I’ve had a few nights where I went to bed and woke up cold because the heater wouldn’t run
@@AnkeneyVanBuilds I’ve had the apex for a year now, kinda regret it. Should have gone with goal zero. But the apex does work really well, for fridge, fan and lights. Since I invested that money in it, I’ll try and see if with extra battery if it will work. If not, I’ll buy goal zero
Yeah bud hole saw going way to fast . The bigger the hole saw the slower u should go for steel. I drill through with a 32mm hole saw on low speed, ie 1 on my drill and use crc or proper cutting lubricant and don't force it as hard as u can
You can do individual holes for both exhaust and intake. But you the put the tubes on after the fact and where I placed the heater. It would have been very crowded to try to get the hose clamps on it. I have a different method of cutting the hole in my “simplified webasto install video”
I think your hole cutter was for wood not metal......that will happen if using a wood drill for metal.....best buy the diamond cutter....even some of the metal cutters are cheap.
I thought the same thing but it was specifically for metal. I think I’ve come to the conclusion that I was trying to cut it too quick. I’ve cut various holes in the floor since with either smaller hole saws or just gig saws and they’ve worked just fine

It went through the flooring in like half a second, once it got to the metal is when it burnt out. Ive started using different strategies that have worked much better
That probably would have been easier to drill. But with how crowded all the pipes are and the hose clamps I thought it may have been more difficult to drop everything through. Maybe next time! Thanks

I haven't put one under there. I considered it but it is just such a busy area underneath the van there. I found the spot I chose to be much better

@@TWSUF-JI I mainly used pocket hole screws and also attached a 2x4 to the step so that it can support the weight of people walking on it!

Nice!! Good luck with it! The step was about 8-1/2” tall. And I believe 10” deep. But feel free to measure out what ever fits you the best!

I think that I would prefer using a fuse from my DC distribution box instead of having a fuse that might be hidden or forgotten. Any thoughts on that?

Energy apex is a solar generator. Similar to goal zero. The fuel tank is the vans fuel tank. So you fill it at a gas station
