Ares 1-X | KSP Cinematic

Ares 1-X was a prototype version of NASA's original Orion crew launch vehicle concept, involving a liquid-fueled upper stage on top of a Space Shuttle solid fuel booster. The 1-X was a proof of concept for the Ares-1 system using an inert dummy upper stage, however it was cancelled along with the rest of the Constellation program in 2010.

this thing looked super badass. I Honestly think they should have painted the Ares I second stage tank white so it looked like this. Man what we lost when we cancelled constellation

The main issue with ares in my opinion: if the launch escape system initiated anywhere from 30s-60s after launch, it would kill all crew members, due to it being engulfed by the srb flame
