Where the Action Is 1965 - Love Is Strange, The Everly Brothers

  • Airdate: October 12, 1965, Tuesday.
    Season 2, Episode 22 - ABC
    The Everly's cover of "Love is Strange" (one of my favorite Everly Brothers songs) only made it to 128 on Billboard, but it did get to #11 in the U.K. Last month, Sept. '65, they performed a live version on "Shindig!"
    The Action Kids: Steve Ciro, Jerilyn Stapleton, Roger Minami, Lesley Evans, Mike Williams, Roberta Tennes, Pete Menafee, Jill Gordon, and Joy Ciro.
    Location: Port of Los Angeles, CA near the Wilmington oil fields. The ship is the U.S.S. Kitty Hawk (CVA-63, later CV-63) as identified by @SSN515. In 7 days from this episode’s airing, she will ship out to Vietnam.
    Thank you to @jthyme7940, Gary, the Don to my Phil, (lol) for helping me get this clip posted.
    I love sharing these classic clips and hearing from the ol' gang. Posting is still a blast! I hope to have more clips to share soon.
    Thank you for watching!

    Thie Everly Brothers version of Love is Strange is by far my favorite. Love this video. Wish I could have been one of the dancers. Wonder where in L.A. it was filmed. Unusual location with all of the oil rigs and a big military ship. I'm a Northern California person, so not as familiar with L A. except for Disneyland.
    I'm guessing maybe Long Beach.

      I'm pretty sure it's Long Beach but confused by the aircraft carrier behind them. IIRC Long Beach was never a carrier port.

    Thank you for featuring this Everly Brothers classic. Don and Phil first performed as young boys with their parents Ike and Margaret Everly on KMA in Shenandoah, Iowa in the 1940's and 50's before moving to Nashville--and eventually superstardom. The Everly Brothers Childhood Home was moved and remodeled, and is located next to the Greater Shenandoah Historical Museum!!

      The Everlys really took a hit when the British Invasion happened. It wasn’t that the music they were putting out was bad, they were unfortunately thought of as a 50s act even though they had moved on from that genre. They also didn’t have anyone (i.e., a strong manager) who was out there pushing their songs for them. They were relegated to playing some really second rate venues and the state fair circuit. It’s rather a testament to their tenacity and work ethic that they didn’t throw in the towel completely but they had bills to pay like the rest of us.

      @OversizedBurrito Рік тому +2

      In America, yes. I believe "The Price of Love" was number 1 in Britain though. And it seems you are a fan so no need to tell you that the Everlys made a ton of great stuff between late '64 and '66 (and more beyond but I personally love their '65 sound).

    What a great cover! Thanks for posting!
    The brothers were even more popular overseas, particularly in the UK and South Africa. They had several hits there that didn't make it over here, including 1963's excellent "The Girl Sang The Blues". As I travelled, I became intrigued by how some American acts were much bigger elsewhere on Earth. For example, Percy Sledge is an absolute legend in Southern Africa, ranked with Elvis, Cliff Richard and Elton John. And funny how so many songs by American artists flopped here, but topped charts elsewhere. Some examples include Nancy Sinatra & Lee Hazlewood's "Sand", Dobie Gray's stunning cover of Elvis' "Loving Arms", Dolly Parton's "You Are", and Diana Ross' "Surrender".

      I love it too Gary. Can’t go wrong with the Everly’s. And Roberta certainly didn’t hurt the show’s rating, lol.
      Is it just imagination or do these pre-Dick Clark intro clips have particularly good recordings of the songs. To my ear, this song, the Herby Alpert songs, Keep On Dancing, Liar, Liar etc… all sound particularly crisp and clear and better than the mono 45’s of the day. Maybe Dick had some sound guys temporarily tweak the recordings or something…or maybe my imagination is running away with me. 🤔

      @jthyme7940 Рік тому

      @@YCDTI Well, let's try this again. Hopefully this post will show up! ha ha......Anyway, as for the recordings.....I'm not sure if they used tape or actual records but my guess the reason the audio is so good is that the audio went right to the soundboards to synch up with the video cameras and they likely had some hidden speakers near the performers for them to lip-synch to. Maybe in this clip the speakers were behind the spool that Roberta was on. Next time we meet up with Fang, we should ask him about this.

    There's so much History in this song. It was originally done by Mickey & Sylvia and Sylvia would later co create Sugarhill Records that featured the very first rap song Rapper's Delight by The Sugarhill Gang. When the matadores were rejected to be the opening act for jackie wilson they were told to do a mickey & sylvia type of act. The matadors later became the miracles, and smokey robinson & ronnie white who co wrote "my girl" for the temptations and helped stevie wonder get into motown. in his book from 1987 smokey and ronnie white were pictured where they briefly recorded as Ron & Bill and the caption said "not the everly brothers".
