    I have a ton of dvd, a few BD, and recently got into 4k quickly buying around 50 4k movies. BD discs look great, but 4k discs look like I am seeing it as intended. Sometimes mix and match is the way to go. Save money on the ones you want but don't stare at, buy 4k for the ones you love and rewatch. 4k physical is to streaming what a ferrari is to a ford pinto. no comparison

    The Star Wars complete saga blu ray is the best picture I've ever seen. I only have a Full HD TV, so the contrast is also alot darker on my Dads Samsung Oled.

    I've recently upgraded to a 4k TV and player, both units are set up to play Dolby Vision and Atmos, which is a huge upgrade from standard DVD/BR content. So when looking at physical media, I'm looking for media that's compatible to my set up. I still buy BR's, but 4k UHD Dolby Vision/Atmos is a selling point for me to get that as close to the theater experience as possible, all I have to do is add popcorn.

    • @Talesfromtheshelf
      @Talesfromtheshelf  3 місяці тому +1

      This is a very important factor, I’m glad you brought this up. I feel like many people buy 4ks and aren’t using the proper set up to get the full potential out of their discs.

      @@Talesfromtheshelf Well it clearly say's on many of the 4k cases what equipment you need for the best experience, some don't. You have to zoom in and look for the DTS and Dolby branding. As long as your TV and player are rated for both HDR10, HDR10+, DTS Audio, Dolby Vision/Atmos, you can get an awesome experience from both BR/4k physical media. It depends, sometimes BR's are a great value if they offer Dolby Audio/Atmos, that's a great buy on a budget, if you can get a 4k with both Dolby Vision/Atmos, with the bonus Blue Ray disk, even better. You should do a video on how to read the back of the box and zoom in on what people should be looking for on their given set up. People who don't own 4k TV's or players but are planning on upgrading in the future, will find value in sticking with blue rays, but might want to consider buying both the BR/4k packages so they have the 4k disk on hand when they upgrade.
      Great channel, happy to sub! 😁👍💯

    Nothing worse than a recent acquisition on Blu, only for the 4K to get announced/released weeks after...
    Amen for editing your collection that speaks of who you are as opposed to buying everything on sight which becomes a strong case of diminishing returns and also you will suffer from huge buyers remorse.

    • @Talesfromtheshelf

    Haha, I had the exact thoughts on Crimson Peak....have the Blu-ray and yep, I'm good. And yes, when I buy a Blu-ray and 6 months later they release the 4K I NEVER upgrade...not playing that game. Most of my 4K's are of older movies shot on actual film stock that benefit the most from 4K.
    good topic!

    With everything costing so much more I changed my process on buying 4k movies. It needs to be a huge upgrade or a favorite for me to buy the 4k disc. Modern TVs and players upscale really good and Nit ratings on new TVs for SDR is great as well. Don't feel like I'll ever regret just having the Blu-ray.

      Honestly this is a good time to get into it. When I got in in 2018, 4k wasn’t really the norm yet. So I was exclusively getting blu rays. From then on it was constant 4k upgrades being announced lol

    We're similar collectors. Every release I buy is because I like the film and want it on my shelf. I don't have the money or space to fill my room with junk. Quality over quantity. I currently have about 60 4Ks, 200 Blu-ray's, and 100 DVDs that I didn’t want to get rid off. After Hours and The Warriors were must upgrades. I'm still gonna get Sleepy Hollow at some point, never owned a physical. Cool posters btw, Carnival of Souls and Night of the Living Dead, etc. I have those. Great films. I never make use of my posters, I must have tons lol.

      @@Talesfromtheshelf At this point, if you want to make 4K scan the original film again.
      Let's take LotR for example, the 4K isn't sourced from 4K transfers. The DNR is so absurd it removes details from the elements. And it still is not proper open matte.

    Good points. I like upgrading to 4k on most but certain films I’m good with the blu ray(such as Crimson Peak, I like the movie but not enough to upgrade).
    but I have to say, I have that Roadhouse shout blu ray, and it literally looked like a dvd compared to the Vinegar Syndrome 4k, I was blown away.
    but overall I view 4k upgrading as a luxury that I don’t need right away (most of the time), waiting for price drops is when I like to swoop in for some 4ks.

    • @Talesfromtheshelf
      @Talesfromtheshelf  3 місяці тому

      Exactly, 4ks are like a luxury, not a necessity. If I ever get the chance I may get the road house 4k, but it’s not a priority by any means. Thanks for watching !

    Various factors determine whether or not I intend to go for 4K, or stick with Blu Ray. One big factor for me is whether or not the Blu Ray actually looks good. A perfect example of this for me is Blade Runner, the original. It looks absolutely gorgeous and I don't really feel a desire to upgrade. It's also a factor with that film that it's not exactly one of my favorite movies. My mantra with whether or not to upgrade to 4K or not is pretty simple, if you want to, do it, if you don't feel the need, don't. Pretty simple and not really something that requires any sort of community debate. It's fun to talk about though. Great video.

    everyone has their own constraints around upgrades - $$, space, etc. I favor 4K when buying new, I do upgrade my "must watch collectionis", but the overriding factor for me is the audio format. Asmost often, the 4K will have the upgraded audio: Atmos, DTS:X. I will often buy the Bluray over the 4K for movies when the Bluray has the same audio track. My TV, BR player and Nvidia Shield all offer 4K upscaling. So as shelf space is now my limiting factor, I'm going to limit my upgrades (already done star wars, harry potter, Indy Jones, etc). Not sure if I've ever watch everything already in my collection (mortality clock is always ticking)!

    • @Talesfromtheshelf
